Modem AEBS Laptop. Which of those should have DNS server details set?

Hi,
I have a modem which is connected to an AEBS. And the AEBS connects via air to my laptop. Which of these three things should have the DNS server IP addresses, supplied by my ISP, set in them, and which shouldn't?
The modem has a web page based set up, which has a DNS set up available. It seems to have a mind of its own and ignore my settings -- resets to what it was before (which isn't the case of other settings for the modem)
The base station in its set up has DNS server IP address fields, which was already filled in (automatically possibly -- I can't remember) with my ISP's DNS addresses.
And there's the places for DNS addresses in the Network in System Preferences. This was empty but I've now put in my ISPs settings there. Either way, with or without, doesn't seem to make any difference.
Can anyone tell me where there is info online about where to put DNS info correctly for a modem > AEBS > computer set up please? Or maybe someone knows?
TIA,
John.

I never set the DNS servers on any client computer, Mac or Windoze. Note that in the DNS Servers: section of the Network Preferences it says (Optional). I suggest you leave that space blank.
Similarly, if you are using your AEBS as your gateway router and your Internet connection to your is configured Using DHCP there is no need (and no benefit) to predefining the DNS servers.
If you have a situation where you must pre-set the DNS servers IP addresses, then I would do it only in the AEBS.
BTW, I assume this is in conjunction with your other thread about the AEBS crapping out every few hours while downloading files. Remember that DNS is used only to resolve names to IP addresses as in each time you call up a different URL. DNS doesn't enter the picture in the middle of any other kind of transaction. I suspect that DNS is not your problem in this case.

  • Which power adapter should have come with my 15" Macbook?

I got a 15" Macbook Pro at Christmas this year and I just looked at my power adapter and saw that it's a 60W, although I thought it should have been an 85W one. My computer does charge when I'm using (and rather quickly too, I might add), but I was just kind of wanting some clarification on this. I'm looking to buy a second power adapter to have one at my house and one at my boyfriend's house. He currently is using a 13" black Macbook (circa 2006, I believe), but is looking to get a 15" Macbook Pro in the future.
Anyway, I'm just wondering what power adapter I need to purchase, and check that I was indeed given the correct charger to begin with. I don't know how to find my model number, but it was the cheapest of the 15" models at the time. Thanks for your help!

Eh, not quite: You can use any Intel MB with any Magsafe adapter, but the use of it will vary.
I use my 17" mid-2010 i7 MBP with a 60W adapter from time to time if it's the one in a convenient place, I've even used it with the 45W only Airline adapter. Note the MacBook's power system is quite smart. If the system is on and active and it needs to restrict the power drawn, charging the battery will be the first to go, and then external power will be supplemented by battery power. So with a 15" or 17" MBP: on an 85W adapter you can play a 3D game and charge at the same time. Whee! Charge time is lessened if you draw less power and minimized if you power off the system and only use the available power to recharge. On a 60W it's possible to draw enough power using the system that charging will take an impractical amount of time. Power the system off and it'll recharge almost as fast as the 85W. With a 45W or airline adapter it won't recharge at all, and if the system is pretty busy, power will be draining from the battery too, albeit at a slower rate than if you were on battery only.
Think of the MacBook's power system as a water tank with an inlet hose and a drain hose. Inlet hoses come in three sizes, if your inlet is larger than your outlet you can fill the tank (recharge) at different rates depending on the drain (Air, 13", 15", 17" and how busy). The only exception where the analogy breaks down is if your drain is not the smallest (Air) and you use the smallest inlet (45W adapter), you can't fill the tank even if the drain is closed (MB is off).
If you want the other gory technical detail, only the 85W Apple adapter can switch up the 16v to 18v to allow for a faster recharge on the 15" and 17" MBP.
Probably more than you wanted to know...
Bottom Line: If you want to be able to charge any MagSafe MacBook, get an 85W adapter, Apple charges the same for the 60W as the 85W, and the 85W is only a little larger these days. (3rd party Magsafe adapters, not so much, the 60W's are usually a few bucks less.) 85W is what you'll find at the training tables in an Apple store BTW.
Don't bother with the $50 airline adapter if you don't own an Air. There are several 3rd party Auto/Air MagSafe adapters that will charge a 13" -17" MBP in the air or on the road.

  • Should have the server "on" all the time?

    Hi,
I would like to know if I have to leave my computer on all the time if I put the serveur solution on my computer? Or do we have a kind of cloud solution with it?
    Many thanks for your help.
    Manu

    Manu
If you are changing a workstation to a server and plan to use it both ways, the day to day user of that workstation will see slowdowns to some extent because of the server activity.
If you plan to have the computer turned off then you may want to look at file sharing hosts on the web if that type of service exists.
Otherwise this can be done relatively easily.
Set up the file sharing on the server.  Leave it on.  That way if you do what follows, anyone with proper access can get to the files at any time they might need it.
Put the items to be shared in a "shared" folder in the server and set up the permissions for that folder to only allow access to the people you want.
Set up VPN access for people off of the network to securely get into the network and server.  This step may be handled by a router or a router may need to be set up to port forward VPN connections to your server.
This way a secure VPN is set up, the user outside of the network can connect to the server, and get the files needed at any time.

  • Should my DNS server be talking to the internet?

I have the DNS service running on my OSX server in order to use Open Directory and server-based home folders. To use these server-based home folders I have to put the IP address of the server in the "DNS Server" entry on all the machines in Network Preferences.
Because the workstations here would seem to be going to the file server for DNS, do I need to open ports on my router or something so that the server can provide this info? I'm having some weird email issues with emails not arriving in a timely manner (inter-office via the internet, some arrive days late) and slow response times in Safari (page takes a while to start loading, and then loads very quickly once server found) so I'm wondering if this is what's causing it.
    Any hints appreciated. Thanks!

If you only use your own DNS on both server and LAN clients (you should with your setup of using the same domainname internally - a bit "ugly" but it works) you need to also setup any external services IP numbers such as any mail and web servers (and others).
It wasn't me who set it up like this, but I'm stuck with it! What do you mean when you say to "setup any external services IP numbers"? DO you mean I need to tell the server where to find the mail server so that it finds it more easily? Where do I put them? And would it just be the mail server address, i.e. I assume I don't need to put in every website we want to access? No, that would be silly... but then... who knows.
I would add forwarders (your ISP DNSes) to /etc/named.conf and turn off IPv6.
In theory I know about these unix style text files, but do I need to be logged in as root to see them? I can't see the /etc directory and searching for named.conf brings up nothing. Also, I turned off IPv6 on the server and shortly after someone with a server based home folder got a message sayiing that they'd lost connection to all the mounted volumes on that server with "disconnect all". Turning IPv6 back on made that message go away so I don't want to play with that again for the time being!
Is there a way to set these things up without resorting to editing text files? I'm an old-skool mac user and so it's a bit scary. I should have made that clear from the beginning. Thanks!

  • I'm having a hard time understanding the best way I should have my color settings, set. Can I get someone's help with this?

I am scanning old photographs with an Epson V750 Pro and have a question on how my Photoshop should be set, or how the scanner should be set.
I have Photoshop 7.0 and it works fine, but I have started scanning some old photographs with my new Epson V750 Pro scanner and every time I go to open a scanned photograph, I receive a message reading:
My Photoshop's color setting are "custom" set: I never changed anything, but this is how I've always ued it and have never had any problem before. Is there a better way it should be set?
Right now these are the Color Settings:
Should any of these settings be different? If something in Photoshop should be changed, what should I do? I don't want to be asked this every time I open a scanned image.
Or, should any of the settings in the Epson Scanner when scanning?
    Right now:
The other color settings available are 48-bit Color and Color Smoothing, but sometimes when I use the 48-bit Color, Photoshop will give me an error when I go to save the edited scan, telling me there isn't enough space to save it. I have no idea why this happens because there is plenty of space, but I end up having to change the scan to 300dpi to save it.
Well, I don't know if any of this makes since, but I would love to receive any help. I would like to understand why I am having this problem and how the color settings should be, so I don't have this trouble anymore.
    Thanks,
    Sean

In Epson Scan, click Configuation at the bottom of the main window, and try these settings.
If it doesn't work, I think it'll  be ok converting to sRGB in Photoshop,
Edit: You can set PS to convert to sRGB automatically under Color Settings > Color Management  Policies > RGB.
But if you can control it from Epson Scan, that's probably preferrable.

  • When you publish a webpart what should the debugging server be set to?

    Hi,
I am trying to deploy a webpart in Visual Studio.
First of all, it says which local site do you want to use for debugging? Should this be a SharePoint server on your local machine that you are using VS on which will be different from the remote server you deploy to? On my local pc there are 3 web sites
    - SharePoint - 80, SharePoint Central Administration v4 and SharePoint Web Services. Which one should it be?
And if this is what you need to do then, when it comes to deploying the webpart, how does VS know where to deploy it to? Because the server will be elsewhere. Also should it be deployed to the app or web server?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
It is required to do the web part development in the machine with SharePoint Server installed cause we will need to use the SharePoint Object Model in our development,
so please choose a site(you can use the “SharePoint - 80”) in the local server for “What local site do you want to use for debugging” option and the web part solution can be deployed to this site during our development.
    Here is a link about
Create Visual Web Parts in SharePoint 2010:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff597539(v=office.14).aspx
If you want to publish it to other servers, there will be a solution package(.wsp) generated after we publish our solution, we can upload install this solution package
to a specific server as you want.

  • De-activating CS6 from a new laptop which is NOT in my possession

I recently bought a new Toshiba laptop and de-activated Photoshop CS6 from my old laptop and re-activated it on the new laptop.  The new laptop is faulty - at the moment it is with a Toshiba Agent, who can't repair it.  Toshiba is refunding the cost of this faulty laptop.  They are wiping the drive clean next week.
My problem is;  how do I de-activate CS6 from the new faulty laptop, which I no longer have?  Also, I don't know whether to re-activate it on the old laptop, or wait until I can purchase a new laptop again.  Is there a limit to how many times CS6 can be de-activated and re-activated?  This software is already on my desktop, so the enquiry is about the software being on 2 machines.
    Regards
    Pam J

For problems like that you need to deal with Adobe Customer Support.  This ias a user forum site not Adobe support.  Adobe support is not all that it should be however they are set up to handle problems like yours.   Disk crashes are common and I have had to deal with Adobe support for a couple of Head crashes over the years.  Each of my activation problems were handled with one phone call  to Adobe customer support.  The hardest part these days is to find the Phone number.  Adobe.come does its best to make it hard to find.  Google knows the number start there.
Install CS6 call Adobe during the activation process they can help you activate the install.

  • Should OS X server act as a single router/server instance?

Services like mail, iChat AV and web are meant to be visible to both internal and external users, whereas file, print and others probably are not. Given that I run a typical 5-desktops small company with one server and a DSL internet connection, how should OS X server be set up?
Having a dedicated modem/router gives me better security, but requires me to port-forward all kinds of data towards the server. While some protocols like http work pretty well using the setup, others like IPsec and iChat are more error-prone or usually do not work over NAT.
Using the optional USB ethernet adapter, I could use the server as a single hub between internet and intranet, dual-homed between DSL and internal network. Would that expose services and data in a insecure way, if I had the firewall turned on?
Mac mini server is great, but how is it supposed to work in a scenario like this? What's your opinion? Regards,
    Christian

    Use a firewall-gateway.  It's easier.
If you acquire a gateway with a VPN server embedded, then you can avoid the worst of dealing with NAT.
If you search the forums, you'll find me recommending a firewall-gateway pretty regularly, and in the threads where folks have encountered configuration and IP routing issues when trying to use their Mac as an expensive and comparatively awkward IP router.
If you do choose to use your Mac as a gateway-firewall, Server Admin can open ports on all controllers, meaning you can expose protocols to the Internet, and where you might not want to.  And there are cases were a reconfiguration or an "innocent" software installation or reconfiguration can open up an exposure; having humans operating as a matter of course directly on a box providing gateway-firewall services is not without its risks.
Here is why I recommend an external gateway-firewall box.

My i phone 4 got locked by my small sister plus my laptop was formatted i dont have itunes back up to unlock thei phone what should i do i am puzzeled?? i tried passcode it says i phone is disabled .. some one help please

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414  ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/20025416 - "A restore erases the iPod. If you restore from backup the iPod will be like it was IF the iTunes library includeds [sic] all the synced media like apps and music since those are not included in the backup.")
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)
If none of the above work, try:

itunes is copying/converting 500gb of music from .wma to .m4a files that are on an external drive onto my laptop which doesnt have enough room. how do i reroute these newly converted files somewhere with enough space for them?
new to itunes, used windows media player before that and always ripped music directly to an external hardrive and accessed it through the player. now that i downloaded itunes it is taking from the external hardrive and copying a second file for each song onto my lap top hard drive which does not have the capacity for all my music. as itunes converts music files i want them saved back onto my external drive or another location i have space for rather than the lap top. how do i change the setting to move the itunes media folder to another location. assuming that hitting copy and past and dropping it in a random location will cause a few errors.

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

  • I just bought a new macair laptop and it doens't have idvd and I want to make a DVD slideshow with music.  I have an external CD drive. Is there an applicaation that apple has to do this?  IF I buy a used mac, which ones have idvd?

I have a new macair laptop and it does not have idvd. It has a flashdirve instead, so no internal CD drive though I bought an external one. I'm wanted to make a DVD slide show with music and I was told I can't do that in order to play it on a dvd player. Does Mac have an appication to buy that can do the same thing? I thought I saw one for $39.95 but not sure if it will do this. The apple store did not know for sure. Also, if I bought a used mac laptop, which ones will have the idvd installed on it?
    Thanks,
    Phyllis

It is now apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
Other users have complained to Apple via Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html and/or http://www.apple.com/contact/ and have received a boxed copy of iLIfe 11.  Give it a try. In the meantime the following maybe of interest:
iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
Apple has announced that iLife is now an unsupported product and those iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the boxed iLife 11 at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought. Personally, if I already didn't have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.
