Modem and Cascading Routers: IP distribution?

Hello!
I've been searching for my case here but couldn't find anything similar. I would really appreciate your help!
I have a Sagemcom F@st 2764 ADSL modem and two WRT160N routers.
I want to create a network where the IP numbers are distributed by the ADSL Modem (it is now with DHCP on). To be more specific, the Modem has the IP 192.168.25.1 by default, and I want the computers connected to the Linksys routers to have 192.168.25.xxx IP ranges.
SAGEMCOM: 192.168.25.1
WRT160N 1: 192.168.25.2
WRT160N2: 192.168.25.3
Computers: 192.168.25.xxx

Your 'modem' is a modem/router combo unit or Gateway.   You need to have that unit put in Bridge mode and then connect your routers.  You do not want to use the router portion of that Gateway.

    I have a 2-Wire modem (1000SW) from the phone co. for DSL.  I tried to hook up wireless using a WRT54G Linksys router and this modem.  Can't get a connection or get into the access point setup page.  Does anyone know of issues between these 2?

    first off , disconnect the modem from the router and connect the computer to the LAN port 1 of the router..reset the router for 30 seconds and do a power cycle
    access the router using http://192.168.1.1 . the default login password is "admin"..
    once on the web ui ,change the local ip add to 192.168.2.1 .save the settings and do a power cycle
    connect the modem to the internet port of the router ... check whether the internet works ..

    hello best buy community. currently my home is running through an old modem and router and i would like to upgrade them n class to get faster download and upload rates. currently i am under 1 mb/s on download and .33 mb/s on the upload. i would like these numbers to be changed to the highest possible within a reasonable budget of about 150-200 dollars. the router will split the signal between 4 laptops 1 desktop and 1 tv/ bluray. thank you for your suggestions 

    If you've plugged your computer directly into your router, and the speeds are still the same, then this discussion is irrelevant. Contact your ISP and have your lines checked. It's on the ISP's end. 7mbps is never a guarentee, of course, but I wouldn't settle for anything less then at least 6. If you can't get six, then downgrade your plan to as close as they are actually able to provide.
    Your router would have nothing at all to do with it. Not even slightly. Not a tiny bit. Not unless it's on fire, and even then, it would just stop working.

  • Opening ports on cascading routers

    hello everyone this is my first time here so hopefully I'll post up all the info you need the first time. I have 2 wrt54g routers cascading off of each other. The first wrt54g(#1) is connected directly to my cable modem the wrt54g(#2) is connected to wrt54g(#1) by a cable running from the Lan port on wrt54g(#1) to the WAN port on wrt54g(#2). All devices connected to both routers work fine except my Xbox360 that's connected to my wrt54g(#2). I can get onto xbox live but my Nat setttings are set to moderate keeping me from finding alot of games online. What I need to do is get ports 3074 & 88 open but I can't figure out how to do this with the cascading routers. How would I go about opening those ports? Do I need to give you more information?

    As you have 2 Wireless Router and they are setup in a 2 Different Networks, If you open the ports on your 2nd router, your 1st Router will Block the Ports for XBOX. So i think in this case you need to Open the Ports on your Both the Routers.
    First you need to login to your 2nd Router setup page, click Here and this will guide you how to enable port forwarding on your router for XBOX. 
    Once you do the settings on your 2nd router, now you need to login to the 1st router setup page and again you need to do the Port tirgerring and click on save settings. Now check if you are able to play and join the games on your XBOX. I might think this should solve the problem. 

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme with cable modem and router?

    I'm having a house built and all of the wiring for TV, phone, and internet will be centralized in a closet. The cable modem can be placed there as well. In one room in the basement I want to use my Airport Extreme for my iMac and USB external hard drives. In another location of the basement, I'd like to set up a Time Capsule for another desktop and USB printer. If the cat5e comes out of the wall at each location, I "think" I need a router at the closet location. I also thought I might need an Airport Express upstairs on first or second floor to boost signal for my laptop. The house isn't that big so maybe that's overkill. So beyond the router question, do I want to set up a roaming network and have the Airport Express connected via ethernet or just wireless if the thought is that I need this? Finally, if I should connect cable modem to router to Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, etc., in what order and ports does the equipment get connected? Many thanks!!

    Welcome to the discussions, Forum Girl!
    It would be best to position the cable modem and main router in the central location like the closet if possible. The other devices would connect via ethernet to the wall jacks in each room.
    If you could setup a "roaming" wireless network as you mention, this will give you better wireless performance and coverage. This is the way commercial establishments like airports, businesses, etc. are configured for wireless.
    The order of connection would go something like this: ethernet connection > cable modem >main router>devices. Devices could be computers, routers, a backup device, etc. Since the Extreme has only 3 LAN ports for ethernet connections, you will also need to plan to install an "ethernet switch" near the location of the main router to provide enough ethernet jacks. If you are planning to use DirectTV, etc or your audio/video devices require ethernet connections (most new products do for updates and extra features), be sure to plan for that as well.
    Make sure that CAT5e or CAT6 wiring is run so you will be able to take advantage of faster gigabit speeds.
    Finally, it would be a good idea to work with an IT specialist to go over your plans to make sure all the bases are covered. This would be money well spent.

  • New to FiOS, can I use my own modem and router

    I saw several questions similar to mine, but none that I saw answered my question for my scenario. I am sorry if this is a duplicate. I am new to FiOS. I have no other services from Verizon and do not plan to get any. No phone, no television, nothing. Just Internet. God willing, the installation will take place in two days. My house already has coaxial cabling. I have my own cable modem, a SURFboard SB6121, which goes to my router, a TP Link TL-WR941ND. None of my equipment advertises that it is FiOS compatible. I've seen other people asking about using their own modem and router, but in those cases the scenario involved other bundled services, and I understand a FiOS router is necessary to forward ports to television, phone, and computers. However, in my very simple scenario, can the Verizon optical network terminal simply feed its output to my coax, from there to my modem, then router, then comptuers? Is there any reason that wouldn't work? Verizon technical support just gave me a machine that wanted to help me troubleshoot my Internet connection, and I couldn't get from there to a human. Thanks in advance for the help!

    Banish the word and the device called "modem" from your home when using FiOS.  FiOS does not use modems.  Your cable modem is useless with FiOS.  Do not plug it in. FiOS uses routers.  The router connects to the ONT's WAN port using MoCA (coax) or Ethernet.  The installer will enable one of the ONT's WAN ports.  If you order 150Mbps or higher speeds, they will have to use Ethernet.  For slower speeds, coax is the default.  Many installers will use Ethernet if you ask nicely, but usually only if it isn't too much work.  Make sure it's easy to connect a router to the ONT using Ethernet, and you should be okay.  If Ethernet needs to be run through the walls, your best choice is get it done ahead of time.  You can always call later and get the ONT's WAN port switched. The only routers available with a MoCA WAN port are the Verizon models.  The Verizon routers are good devices for most users.  People who like to tweak their networking gear don't like them as many advanced features are limited or locked down.  You can't run any other router firmware on them.  WiFi range is decent, but not great.  I'm quite happy with my Quantum router.  YMMV. If you get Ethernet WAN enabled, you can use any router you want.  However, know that Verizon provides zero support for any other router.  They won't even mention it as an option.  That doesn't mean you can't use one, simply that you must do so without Verizon's help. There are reports that they won't even complete an install without one of their routers to verify service.  If you don't use one of their routers, consider renting one for a month to complete the install or even buying a used one.  If you own a Verizon router, you can install it if you ever suspect Verizon networking issues.  This will allow you to call their support. This FAQ is very helpful:http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077 Good Luck.

  • Alternative to HH4 Separate Modem and Router

    I'm on a ADSL 8mb G.DMT line and find my HH4 severely lacking in features. Most importantly i need QoS to manage the available bandwidth between users and prevent one device hogging the connection. So clearly i needed a better router.
    I already had a spare netgear wnr2200 running dd-wrt custom firmware so it was suggested that i purchase a Huwaei HG612 to go with this. I took this advice, unlocked it so that i could use it with ADSL but found it dropped connection every 1 minute when connected to a router over PPPoE. Theres not many routers that support connecting to a modem over PPPoA so i purchased a Draytek Vigor 120 that was capable of doing a PPPoA to PPPoE bridge. This didnt drop but had packet loss when behind a router.
    I havent looked into the causes of these failed attempts but presume its something to do with how BT handles ADSL lines. I did have a vigor 120 working as above on a ADSL line some years ago on the same equipment so this would suggest BT have changed something.
    So 2 failed attempts i'm now asking what would be a good separate modem and router to go with my bt adsl connection? What are other people using on BT these days?

    There are many good links in the forum with detail. I have a linksys but not that model. So you trying to get 200MOdem >>> Linksys >>>> G5.
    If the G5 works directly to Modem then is should be small issue to insert linksys. I had to go to 192.168.1.1 and "config" the Linksys to act as router/wireless ap.
    You'll need some datapoints from your ISP and then you can select the wireless settings. Typically DHCP and a security setting, like WPA Personal password. Also change your networks name from Linksys to something else.
    It sounds as if your ethernet connection config on the G5 might contain the ISP specific information that now needs to go into the router. Such as connection type...i.e. ppoe and user id password if requireed etc. You would then configure Airport connectivity, primarily just DHCP. (just turn on linksys and then turn on G5 and Airport, you should see your network in the drop down.

  • Airport Express icw wireless modem and B&O sound system

    Hi all,
    I am considering buying the Airport Extreme. Main reasons are:
    1) playing iTunes via the sound system and
    2) wireless connection possibility to external hard disc.
    I will use it in combination with my current wireless modem and B&O sound system.
    From where my internet enters the house it is quite a distance to the sound system location that I can not easily (esthetically acceptable) connect to the sound system.
    My main questions are:
    1) Is Airport Extreme the right system to buy?
    2) Can the Airport Extreme audio output signals be combined through 1 cable for both iTunes and cable radio?
    3) Can I use the Airport Extreme device for playing movies on my television as well?
    I am quite an amature if it comes down to setting up networks and systems, so all (low key) tips are more than welcome. Many thanks in advance!

    Ummm.....
    The express will not extend your modem, since Apple hasn't shipped its own brand modem for years. You can't extend third party routers.  You can try a few tricks if you have ethernet cables though...

    You need to give us a lot more info.
    I presume the MBA and the TC are the combo that doesn't work, although you don't clearly state that.
    If the ipad and TC work.. are you sure the ipad is connected via the TC and not 3G network?
    If it is then the TC itself is fine and the issue might be setup on the MBA.. although if the MBA works with other routers.. that rather confuses the matter.
    You need to actually tell us how the TC is setup in the network. What kind of broadband modem you have and what kind of vpn you are using.

  • Comcast modem and apple tv

    Has this happened to anyone? Purchased our 3rd apple tv recently after first generation one no longer worked. It is located next to Comcast cable modem and the our airport router and older DVI in large TV /so have to use HDMI switch box. When i turn it on, it grabs the comcast IP to my airport and won't let me change it manually. My entire network goes offline and of course, no access to the internet. The appleTV moved to another room, TV works fine. Tried setting IP address manually there and switch back it's location. Nope, took network IP again. Connecting by ethernet cable didn't take IP but would't connect to network- couldn't input password??
    thoughts?? [besides super long hdmi cable to end of room…..]

    I have had problems with missing AirPlay icon on both iPad and iPhone. I have had loooong conversations with the People at Apple - Nice people but no solution. If you have upgraded to newest software on iPad, Apple tv and iPhone, and have connected to the same router, and still have problems, the problem is 100 % the router. I have tried with 3 different routers. All working perfectly except AirPlay. It was a Zyxel, d-link and Sagem router. The Zyxel router I could'nt get to work. Both d-link and Sagem worked without any problems. Today I use the Sagem. So if your AirPlay icon is instable or do not appear, and all is upgraded to latest level, then try with another router.

  • Can I switch back and forth between DSL ethernet modem and AirPort ?

    I use Earthlink DSL connected direct to my iMac by ethernet cable from my modem and the service is very good . . . ever since I installed Leopard I noticed up in the top menu bar that AirPort is ON and usually shows 4 or 5 names listed and only 2 or 3 have the Lock icon . . . I have to assume AirPort is detecting signals from the apartments above and next to me . . . I do not need a wireless connection but I am curious to see if my iMac will actually join one of those networks so how do I temporarily try that and then go back to my regular wired DSL service ? . . . also, I may start renting out a room in my place and the girl will undoubtedly have either a Windows or hopefully a Mac laptop and will need wireless so I would appreciate advice on the best equipment to buy that both Windows and Mac laptops can connect to wirelessly . . . thanks in advance for any advice

    Yes you can. Just unplug your DSL modem and then go to your airport menu and try to connect to one of the networks taht's available there. To switch back, reconnect your DSL modem and connect as you usually do.
    Any wireless "802.11x" router (where x is "b","g", or "n") will work for both Macs and PCs. Practically all routers these days are compatible with every platform out there.

  • One cable modem tow wireless routers in my house --- is this possible?

    I'd like to use two wireless routers to fully cover my house with wireless access. I have a WRT5462 v1 wireless router that I connected directly to the cable modem, and then  connected a second wireless router to one of the CAT 5 ports in the first, with the CAT 5 going into the "Internet" port in the second, which is a WRT610N v1. The first router works fine, but the second does not provide internet connectivity to the devices that connect to it.
    I suspect I need to make modifications to the Internet Connection Type in the Basic Wireless Configuration - I changed from DHCP to a Static IP of 192.168.1.2, but this didn't work.  Any help and direction greatly appreciated

    Thank you very much for you response. Done the set-up as you described, with 1 exception: The WRT54G2 v1 doesn't allow me to reserve an IP address in the DHCP Server settings section. Therefore, I set up its Network as 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.49
    That said, the 2nd router is set up with that IP address, and I can connect to it both vie Ethernet and wireless, and it is supplying IP addresses via its DHCP server address accordingly. However, no access to the Internet (via the first router).
    Now, when I set up router 2 as a static IP, I'm asked to enter an "Internet IP Address", which I've specified as the 192.168.1.2 as you indicated. I'm then required to enter a subnet mask and default gateway, and then DNS 1, DNS2 (Optional), DNS3 (Optional)
    Not knowing what I should enter here, I entered 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask, and 192.168.1.1 (address of the first router) as default gateway.
    Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

    I want to change Router2's Operating Mode from "Gateway" to "Router" because I
    want to turn off NAT on Router2 so that I can access all computers attached to
    Router2 by their individual IP instead of using port forwarding at Router2.
    The problem is after the mode change from "Gateway" to "Router", and regardless
    whether I disable RIP or enable RIP, and on what interfaces it is enabled, computer
    192.168.2.160 does not have internet connection. 
    Observations:
    [0] INTRAnet works as I can reach computer 192.168.2.160 from computer behind Router1
    192.168.1.x and vice versa.
    [1] ping and traceroute *work* on Router2 itself using the built-in dianostic tool.
    [2] nslookup on computer 192.168.2.160 always works on new lookup. It uses
    192.168.2.1 as the resolver.

    This is not expected because NAT to internet should still be done by Router1, no? Computer
    behind Router1 with IP 192.168.1.x has internet connection.
    [5] It looks like I cannot change the Routing Table Entry on Router2. I do not think I need to change anything,
    just an observation.
    [6] If I use LAN to LAN connection, then both intranet and internet works. [The internet IP of Router2 can be
    anything not in the same subnet of the Router1, and DHCP on the local side should be disabled to avoid conflict
    with the the DHCP on Router1].

    I have a question. Unfortunately in order to ask my question, I have to have a lengthy description of my setup. Basically, I have a second Linksys router in "router" operating mode with NAT disabled connected to the Verizon router, and I have a computer which is in a different subnet (192.168.2.x) behind the Linksys router. This computer can communicate with computers behind Verizon router in subnet (192.168.1.x), but cannot reach internet. This is a simplified version of my question, full details are in the original post.
    If I setup the Linksys router in "gateway" operating mode, which means with NAT enabled, then both intranet and internet works, but there is no easy way to setup port forwarding for 10 compueters in 192.168.2.x network to communicate with 10 computers in 192.168.1.x network.
    If I setup the Linksys router in a LAN to LAN configuration with Verizon routers, but this way all computers are in the same subnet, I want them to be in different subnet for access control and things like that.

    Hi All
    New here and already have a question...I'm looking to buy the Draytek 2750 which has the VDSL modem and router built in to the same box, my question is - do I have to configure the modem portion or will it just detect and sync with the line? does anyone have the config if needed?
    I've searched but can't find a definative answer.

    Hi dazzpowder and welcome to the forum. Not sure about the 2750 or whether any other vdsl modem will work with Infinity although I don't see why not but don't quote me. I use the WAN 2 ethernet port on a Draytek 2820n but as it does not have a built in vdsl modem I still have to use the BT supplied modem. The 2820 does a sterling job (as do most Draytek equipments - just a pity that their customer support is less than ideal).  If ou are willing to stay with the BT modem then there are a number of other routers with an ethernet WAN port that will work OK.
    I have 'complained' before about the lack of configurability or even being able to see the line stats with the BT modem but I don't see a solution any time soon.
