"Modem Connected" but Mail and Safari are dead....

Hello Apple People, a newbie here. Hope this is a reasonable question.
I have successfully connected my SonyEricsson via Bluetooth to my MacMini, and via USB to my G3 iBook, with reported connection speeds of 2400bps on each machine (although I have read separately that this might be an unreliable figure). I am only looking to get a slow internet connection, but both the email and the browsing are timing out with no content to display. It's taken me about six hours to get the thing connected (what joy when it finally did!) but now it's behaving as though it is not connected at all. Any idea what might be stopping things getting through?
Any hints most welcome, and thanks for your time.

Forgot to mention the model (K800i) earlier, but having now been on the 'phone for the third time to Vodafone support, it seems that the problem lies not with my hardware or software but with the account settings on my mobile phone. The guy at tech support said to let this forum know that the key was to have the APN IAS (Internet Access Sock) added to my account. This they have now done on my account, although they said it would take up to 24 hours to activate.
I'll feedback if I get through.

  • Upgraded to 4.2 and now Mail and Safari are VERY SLOW...

For some reason since I upgraded to 4.2, both my email and safari are MUCH slower than they were before. Web pages take longer to load and when the Mail program checks for mail it takes forever. I checked out our internet connection (cable modem and Airport Extreme) and the connection is still very fast using our computers. This slowness issue is ONLY with the iPad. Has anyone else noticed internet speed issues with 4.2? ; Is there any solution? I have tried switching on and off the wifi option on the iPad and even restarting the unit but nothing seems to help.
    Thanks!
    Steven

    Hi Steven,
Tap Settings / General / Reset / Reset Network Settings.
Restart your iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Sometimes resetting to default factory settings can help a connection issue.

  • Mail and Safari are so slow

Ever since I updated to Mavericks everything is so slow especially launching application, the new Mail application and Safari.
In addition when I click off of the inbox and on to junk and then back to my inbox it takes over a minute to show anything at times.
Safari is so un-responsive. I cant type in a URL without it refreshing to my homepage first and after that it responds so slow. My internet is over 70mb/s I know its not my computer as I have experienced the same problem on my Macbook pro. Even after I refresh the browser and clear it all out. The issue mainly occurs after the application is launched. It seems to take about 5 minutes to warm up?

I justed started my own thread with this:
Installed Mac Updates yesterday 2/27/14. Safari inoperable eating up CPUs
    Feb 28, 2014 8:43 AM
I installed the updates to my computer yesterday.Suddenly my ram was getting eaten up and I recently upgraded to 8 gigs. I figured the problem was either Firefox or Chrome. I keep 3 browsers open for work and the add'l ram helped. Usually the offenders are the other 2 browsers. Once I shut Safari I immediately had a huge amt of green/free space. [Excuse my inability to use proper tech terms.] I always keep activity monitor on dock and go by amt of green space open. This was with both Chrome and Firefox open. I reopened Safari and the green space disappeared. I then checked CPUs and found a major amt eaten up by Safari "website content."
Safari was inoperable--completely nonresponsive and as I said it happened after updates last night. Any suggestions from the community?
In researching forums for this issue one user suggested downloading EtreCheck and posting report. Side Note: I reopened Safari so it'd be included in report and it is now working properly. I am still posting report and hopefully someone will interpret it for me in "dummy" language. Thanks!

Post subject: NSURLErrorDomain error -1100 in OS X 10.8
If you check for software updates using the App Store in OS X 10.8 and get "NSURLErrorDomain error -1100" the problem may be with your Software Update preferences. This is particularly likely if you were using a custom Apple Software Update server. To solve the problem, quit the App Store, move the following two files (if present) to the trash, restart, and only then rerun App Store updates:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.lockfile

  • Internet-based apps won't refresh, but mail aand safari are fine

Okay, so here's the situation. Internet-based apps, such as Facebook give me error messages saying that items like walls and info don't load, and then the apps crash, or only display older content. My mail works fine. Safari is always slow, and I have done everything from resetting the phone to putting it into DFU mode then hitting restore, and it doesn't solve the problems. Get this, I'm currently on my IPod Touch 64 gb 4th generation which works excellent. I'm on the web using my IPhone 4's Personal Hot Spot connection, and yet the IPod Touch browser is faster.

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

  • Mail and Safari are opening multiple times

Help! I am getting two open icons, two instantiations, and actually two open sets of windows in different safari at the same time. When you command tab you see two of each icon for them. What causes this, and how do I stop it from happening? It just started a few days ago. (on macmini 10.6.6)
    Thanks!

Looks like it is fixed. My version of iKey had imported the same set of macros, so every time mail was launched, it launched twice. Oy vey!

  • Mail and Safari windows close abruptly

Recommended updates to Itunes, Quicktime player and Security patches were applied. After that, Mail and Safari are going crazy.
Any attempt to navigate using keyboard (eg. Tab) in form fill, or clicking on certain legitimate links is causing Safari to close down with no message whatsoever.
Simiar attempts to use keyboard to move up/down or attempt to reply or forward a mail from the mail main window is causing Mail to shut down with no message.
    Can anyone help me?

Further diagonisis on this problem: It doesn't have to be keyboard operation. Even when I am using mouse to navigate, it is crashing (window closing down with no message whatsoever).
Very Very Very Very Very frustrating. Some immediate help needed please.

  • Apps like Mail and Safari Freeze initially

So I have Mac Os X Lion. I love it all around. There is just one annoying problem. When I turn my computer on, and Mail starts up, I cannot "click" on anything. The cursor moves, I can move to and click on things in other applications, but Mail and Safari often will not allow me to click. Let me be clearer. Mail is open, new messages download, the App seems to be running fine. But if I want to open a new message, no amount of clicking will open the message. Similarly, when I go to Safari, a page may load but then I cannot click on any links on the page. If I just press Command Q and reopen the program, everything is fine. But it is slightly annoying to have to do this. Any suggestions?

    Hi David
I have exactly the same issue with Mail but not Safari on my MacBook Air with Lion.  I can't even use Command Q, I have to Force Quit to get Mail responding again.
I have a support call booked for Thursday night so I'll hit you up again with what they tell me.

  • Mail and Safari no longer connect to the Internet, but connection is live?

I have a Quicksilver G4 running OSX 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4 and Mail 2.1.3, connected to the Internet via Ethernet and a BT home Hub setup. Recently the Mac refused to connect to the Internet although a PC connected to the same hub did. I tested the connection with a laptop and found the cable to be fine and a good connection. I ran system diagnostics which tells me the Mac is connected to the Internet and the connection is fine - except that Mail no longer sends or receives mail, and Safari tells me I am not connected to the Internet.
I've tried every test I can think of - the connection appears fine as far as the ethernet cable, Network Diagnostics state that I have a good connection, yet neither application will connect to the server. I have changed no software in years other than Apple updates, and this is the first problem in many months of trouble-free usage.
The BT Home Hub is showing as an active location in system profiler, all else that should be, appears enabled. Can anyone help?
What more can I do to get my Mac back on-line?

    Hi Heather,
In System Preferences>Network>Proxies Tab, make sure none are checked ON.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Airport Interface...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
So if you put 17.149.160.49 in Safari's URL bar & it connects to Apple, then these DNS numbers should cure it.

  • App Store is not opening. Email and Safari are opening but App Store does not saying cannot connect, App Store is not opening. Email and Safari are opening but App Store does not saying cannot connect

even with my phone connected on wifi App Store gives a message "cannot connect to App Store". This when email and Safari are working normally.

Mr Brett, thanks for the reply but my situation remains unchanged. Let me amplify my problem.
My Mac Book, iPad and iPhone are using the same WiFi connection. Every device is able to connect to the internet, email connectivity is good, safari is working perfectly, Apple Store is fully accessible (except on the iPhone) and updates have been received for IOS as well as the various apps.
It is only on the iPhone 6 that message"cannot connect to appstore...." is being displayed whenever App Store is invoked. Surprisingly if i keep pressing the "update" button the page indeed opens but only for a second and I have been able to press update buttons for apps in that second. The app is even getting updated even as the message "Cannt..." continues to be displayed. However, the other buttons like "Featured" "Top Charts" "Explore" and "Search" are not opening for at all. Only the message "Cannot connect to App Store" is displayed.

  • 10.5.3 - Mail and Safari dead

After installing 10.5.3 today I can't run Mail and Safari.
Mail icon in Dock jump once and that's all, Safari shows a message:
"Safari cannot open a browser window and may be missing important recources. Try installing Safari again." And now the horror just begins...
I tried to repaire permissions - didn't help
I tried to create another user account - nothing
I installed COMBO update - nothing
I tried to install Safari again - this one is the best: "You cannot install Safari on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer." !!!!!!!
Give me my e-mails back!!! HELP.

If you tried all this an nothing worked i would back up my stuff quik as "¤#% and erase and instal.
    Regarding your emails:
If you have IMAP you will still be able to acsess them by your webmail
" E-mail clients using IMAP generally leave messages on the server until the user explicitly deletes them"
    If you have POP3
"Although most clients have an option to leave mail on server, e-mail clients using POP3 generally connect, retrieve all messages, store them on the user's PC as new messages, delete them from the server, and then disconnect."
This is just an idea, and it migth not work, but you should give it a try:
Try safe-boot and see if its the same problem opening mail, if you manage to open it in safe boot you should be able to back up you emails from there.
    Safe-boot:
Hold down the <Shift> during startup until you see the login window with red text saying "Safe boot"
I migth be wrong, but i think there is another way to back up your mails from some system folder-not sure what one tho, someone else here or apple support can prbly awnser that
    Good luck

    Dear Al
    Thanks for your reply.
I have just found out what's wrong. I went to the 'more info' section of my Chitchat application and it took me to a link where it explained that Yahoo Chat has ditched chatting with the Java protocol and chatters can now only chat via the Yahoo Messenger protocol, which is Yahoo Instant Messenger with Voice. Unfortunately Yahoo doesn't provide a platform for Yahoo Voice for Macintosh computers. Though the original link I went to provides another link to a thing called 'Adium' from which a Mac can access Yahoo Chat's new protocol, although it's not fully developed yet.
Oh...and thanks so much for letting me know about the Java update release. I did not know that I have to upgrade my system first to recieve the latest update information.
    Regards
    Tina

My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to WIFI, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?  Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone.  I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address.  I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.
