Modem failure to disconnect

I am operating in a dial up mode and connecting to AOL.
About every 6th time I sign off, the iMac modem will not disconnect. Clicking on the Disconnect legend does nothing.
Disconnecting the phone line does nothing.
The "disconnecting" scroll across the top right of the screen continues and will not allow me to sign on again.
The only solution I have found is to restart the computer, When I do that, every thing is back to normal.
The problem, when it occurs, will last for hours if I miss the problem and leave the computer on.

In System Preferences-Network, I have checked the boxes, "Notify me of incoming calls when connected to the internet ," Play alert sound when receiving a call," and "Remind me 1 second before disconnecting me."

Jeffrey, Welcome to the discussion area!
I believe that there are 2 issues here. One is how the iMac handles incoming calls. The other is that your telephone service has to send a signal when there is an incoming call.
In traditional phone service, if you are using the phone and someone tries to call you, their call is blocked at the switch (at the telephone company) and they hear a busy signal.
To do what you want, you must ensure that your phone company has the proper configuration to send your iMac the signal that there is another phone call.

  • Fax modem won't disconnect

After sending faxes, the modem occassionally won't disconnect the phone line, keeping the line engaged until the computer is restarted. Even the "reset printing system" function doesn't correct this problem.
Has anyone else had this happen with the Mac mini and Panther, and how did you resolve it?
    Thank you!

This is happening on my G4 Powerbook Aluminium) with Tiger. Extremely disappointing, seeing as the last time Apple had any decent faxing software was with ExpressFax that came with the PowerBook Duo Express Modem (circa 1994!!).
It would seem that whenever a fax is sent and the recipient doesn't answer, the modem doesn't hang up. When the modem is forced to hang up (ie by deleting the fax job or resetting the fax queue), it will not allow connections from either the fax queue or internet connect.
The only way I've been able to solve it is with a full, cold restart. Surely this is a bug - and surely it's high time Apple solved the whole faxing mess (cronically bad execution, bad ergonomics and low reliability) for good!

  • Modem hangs on disconnect

I don't know if this is a modem problem. Sometimes when I try to conect (dial-up) the dialing sequence will after a bit go to "disconnecting" and then will continue disconnecting until I restart the computer. I'm not sure where to look for a solution. Anyone have a suggestion, please.
    Ann

Try using this software when the computer hangs up.

  • USB Modem 21M-02 disconnects after 20 sec

    Hi,
I have the problem with my newly bought Nokia USB Modem 21M-02. When I try to use it with Play operator (260-06) in Poland (I try 3 different SIM cards) modem disconnects after about 20 second after plugging it into USB. During this short period I can connect with it to Internet, send/receive SMS, browse phone book. Then after about 20 seconds it disconnects, the  signaling diode becomes red fast flashing, communication with modem is not possible. I checked this modem with different computers with Windows XP, Windows Vista and MacOS and problem doesn't disappear. What is interesting the problem disappear if I change SIM card to any provided by other operator. So there is no problem with Aero2, Plus, T-mobile.
    Any advice? Please help.
Is there any possibility to update firmware? Currently there is M1.7.0.

I have the same problem, but I'm using Cisco UCME 9.1
Jabber for iPhone version is 9.1.2.21344
    Disconnects exactly after 8 seconds.
    Please help somebody!

  • Why does modem stall in disconnect mode?

I am having trouble with my modem not disconnecting either when I quit a session or when I get involuntarily terminated by my ISP (CenturyTel or AOL). It seems to happen regardless of my browser application, Explorer, Safari or AOL
Problem sounds similar to the one posted by jon 95 on 4/9/06, who is also running OS 10.3.9; his question remains unanswered too
When I try and trouble shoot modem problems with Apple's on-line FAQ's and Apple support topics I read that all Apple modems run V.92 protocol but my system profiler tells me my modem is a V.90 modulation model. I do have a V.92 modem script shown in my modem settings list so it appears to be on-board.
Question: is this software or hardware problem??
Q: is V.90 versus V.92 modulation a software property or a hardware attribute? If software, can I install / select the V.92 script?
Q: can I install a V.92 modem upgrade and expect more stability and speed in net applications?? My ISP, only available as a dial-up connection in my rural area, typically runs at a speed of 2-4 kbs download speed even when it connects at say 33 kbs

  • Data Guard Failover after primary site network failure or disconnect.

    Hello Experts:
I'll try to be clear and specific with my issue:
    Environment:
Two nodes with NO shared storage (I don't have an Observer running).
Veritas Cluser Server (VCS) with Data Guar Agent. (I don't use the Broker. Data Guard agent "takes care" of the switchover and failover).
Two single instance databases, one per node. NO RAC.
What I'm being able to perform with no issues:
Manual switch(over) of the primary database by running VCS command "hagrp -switch oraDG_group -to standby_node"
Automatic fail(over) when primary node is rebooted with "reboot" or "init"
Automatic fail(over) when primary node is shut down with "shutdown".
What I'm NOT being able to perform:
If I manually unplug the network cables from the primary site (all the network, not only the link between primary and standby node so, it's like a server unplug from the energy source).
Same situation happens if I manually disconnect the server from the power.
This is the alert logs I have:

    Do you have any advice?
    Thanks!

    Hello;
What's not clear to me in your question at this point:
What I'm NOT being able to perform:
If I manually unplug the network cables from the primary site (all the network, not only the link between primary and standby node so, it's like a server unplug from the energy source).
Same situation happens if I manually disconnect the server from the power.
This is the alert logs I have:"
Are you trying a failover to the Standby?
    Please advise.
Is it possible your "valid_for clause" is set incorrectly?
    Would also review this:

  • Modem failure during thunderstorm

My 10.4 iMac G3 Graphite'a dial up internal modem quit working during a thunderstorm - perhaps fried by a power surge? Anyway, when I click on Network the Modem button is now greyed out so I cant select it anymore. Would it be possible for me to easily buy and install a new internal modem? Or could I buy and use one of the small Apple external USB modems that the new G5 iMacs can use?

It does sound like it's cooked. Either option you choose will work.

  • Apple USB Fax-modem failure

I have an Apple USB fax-modem to be used only to send and recieve faxes. The modem had worked proberly since installation several months ago.
Suddenly it returns the message "waiting for the modem to be avaible" (translated from danish) in the "External modem" print queue window. Or sometimes another message something like "preparing the message for sending...". In the Print & Fax list the modem is registered as "ready".
The modem works proberly on another computer. The computer has had a P- and NV-Ram reset and the cache files has been removed using Onyx. And the modem has been removed on the network list just to make sure, that it can't be used by another part of the system.

This solution is a "workaround" and will not affect in any problems, like I saw that they will happen after:
1.) Removing and changing "IOSerialFamily.kext" : ("The system extension '/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext' was installed improperly and cannot be used....")
2.) or go back to OS 10.5.5... (latest security-updates not included)
Go to your System-Prefs -> Printing and Faxing
    chose the Fax-Modem -> Options
1.) to receive faxes: choose "receive faxes on this computer"
2.) to send faxes: choose not to "receive faxes on this computer",
plug your modem out, wait 5 seconds and plug it in.
Now you can send faxes, but not receive,
before you choose "receive faxes on this computer" again.
To send, you have to start with 2.) again...
It's strange for a mac, but better than 10.5.5 or a corrupted system...
APPLE-STUFF: HERE AGAIN: FIX THAT FAX-PROBLEM FOR 10.5.8 QUICK PLEASE - IT'S IMPORTANT!!!

  • Multiple Problems Throughout Contract - Failure to Disconnect when Request and Then Charged.

So lets start with March 2012. I had to move to another house and I brought my FiOS with me. This is where the problems begin.
During transfer it took over a week to get my old price grandfathered over which shouldn't have been such a big deal I've been a paying customer for almost a year now.  Note price should have been 79.99.
They created a new account without telling me any of the information about it, putting in a phone number, giving me an email address or anything. This caused massive confusion on the bill when it was recieved saying I owe $200.00 months later [first bill I recieved]
On return of old equipment they shut the internet off at my new house and after 6 hours on the phone with them they re-enabled it. To my suprise on the bill I recieved [First one] it was now at 129.99 per month!!! Not only that they added an Activation Fee!!!!!! What? All of this without my consent. Eventually I got the fee down to 90.00 Per month but they didn't refund me the extra 50.00 per month they had charged me.
About a month later I had graduated from school and went to the store to have it transfered over but they told me I could not due to past due bills because of how expensive it was and the confusion as I was paying to an old account which I never recieved credit from, the money seemingly disappeared as they said they'd "write me a check" or "credit my new account".
So I go to check my account today and find that I have an early termination fee, call in to learn that my previous land lord hard to call in and get the account canceled and that they won't wave the fee.
I'm not paying this $400.00 bill and when it is reported to a debt collector I will be disputing it with the evidence I've listed here.
Thank you Verizon for a wonderful experience.

We sent you a message on our private support board to assist you  and we did not receive a response.  Please repost the issue if you are still experiencing a problem so that we may assist you.  Tonya C.

  • I had a failure of a dsl modem which inturn destroyed my ethernet port of non isight imac G5.  In attempt to solve the problem I did a clean install of leopard 10.5.4. I am unable to upate to 10.6,.7  or .8 without freezing system network preferences

Dsl modem failure caused malfunction of ethernet port.  In attempt to solve problem I did a clean instillation of  Leopard 10.5.4 and then update to 10.5.5 with access to internet through apple usb to ethernet adapter.  If I attempt to update software to 10.5.6, .7 or .8 it freezes my network system preferences and computer will no longer shut down.  The network connection assistant also no longer sees a connection to the internet throught the usb/ethernet adapter.  I have checked they systerm Tech tool deluxe which shows no problems and also used hard drive utility on instillation disk which found no problems.  Permissions were also checked as well and no problems noted.  Any thoughts as I really like my imac G5.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • NEED HELP! Modem keeps disconnecting w/K7T266 Pro & WinXP

    My system:
    K7T266 Pro
    Athlon 1333MH
    256Mb DDR 2100
    MSI GeForce 2 MX, 32Mb
    Zoom V.92 internal modem
    SB Live! 5.1
    2 x 80Gb Maxtor HD
    LiteOn 16x12x40 CD-RW
    USB mouse
    340 W Enlight Power Supply
This system worked fine on the internet when I was running Win98.  I upgraded to WinXP and now the modem keeps disconnecting shortly after connecting (but it always connects for a short period of time).
Here's what I have tried:  Reloaded WinXP Home Edition on a newly formatted HD using a clean install (not an upgrade) and the NT file system.  Loaded the latest MSI 4-in-1 drivers and upgraded Bios to latest version (v1.9).  Reloaded all the software.  Got all the latest XP drivers and WinXP updates.  Have tried 4 different brands of modems, internal and external.  Have tried modems in different PCI slots (currently using PCI slot 3 with SB in slot 4).  Have tried modem on different Com ports (currently using Com 3).  Have tried slowing down the com port speed.  There is no IRQ sharing with the modem.  Have tried different phone jacks and cords (the same ones that work fine on the older HP Win98 computer I am writing this on).  Have tried 2 different ISPs (currently using CompuServe).  Have reloaded the ISP software several times (trying different versions) and currently have their latest XP version - ISP says others are not having this problem with their software (have spent hours with their technical help with no resolution).  Not using any ad blocker or anti-virus software (yet).
Nothing I have tried has made any difference so far.  Am I missing something?  I don't want to go back to Win98!
Oh ya, another minor annoyance:  My system freezes after sitting idle for a while, even though the Windows power scheme is set to Always On and no screensaver.  Otherwise, everything else works fine.

    Hello everyone,
I was gone for a few days, but when I got home I was very happy to see some more posts to this thread!!
Last night I tried disabling the SoundBlaster (with the Windows System Device Manager).  I disabled both the sound card and the game port.  The modem was still disconnecting.
Until now I hadn't heard of Via chipsets and SoundBlasters not getting along well with each other either.  I had, however, previously tried another sound card - it was an older Diamond Monster card I had, but I couldn't find a WinXP driver for it.  It didn't work well at all with WinXP.  So back to the SoundBlaster Live! 5.1.
I did find a cure for the other problem I mentioned.  I noticed that the SoundBlaster and all 3 USB controllers were sharing IRQ 10.  I removed the USB optical mouse and tried a PS2 ball mouse.  That solved the problem where the system was freezing after sitting idle for a while.  I sure liked the optical mouse better though.  This same problem may have been related to another one I noticed.  When playing audio CDs, sometimes the sound would stop momentarily and then go on again.  I haven't yet had a chance to see if removing the USB mouse solved that problem as well.  I have also noticed that the volume of audio CDs are controlled by the wave volume and not the CD volume.  Is this normal?  I have both the analog and digital cables connected and the CD digital setting enabled.  It's very annoying, since turning the volume up on audio CDs causes the Windows wave sounds to blast me out when they play.  I don't know how to set the SoundBlaster to use one of the other unused IRQs - can anyone tell me how to?
I haven't yet tried the PCI latency patches, because I wasn't too hopeful after seeing that it didn't work for Philipponnat.
Now for the Bios.  I have always had my Primary Graphics Adapter setting on AGP.  The onboard modem and audio settings have always been set to disabled.  I was excited to see that Philipponnat found a cure for the modem disconnections with the PCI latency setting.  When I went to my computer to do the same thing, I was disapointed to find that my Bios does not have a setting by that name, either in the PNP/PCI configuration or anywhere else.  The only thing I found that looked related was one called "PCI Delay Transaction" in the Advanced Chipset Features section, but the only settings available are enabled or disabled.  Mine was set to disabled, but I couldn't tell any difference when I set it to enabled.  Maybe we have different boards - mine is version 1, but I have flashed the Bios to the latest version I found, v1.9.
I have noticed another strange thing in the Bios.  The Bios no longer detects the power supply fan speed - it always reads zero RPM in Bios even though the lead is hooked up.  The other fans show a reading.  The power supply fan used to show a reading when I first put the computer together.
I also have S.M.A.R.T. enabled.  I have 2 identical hard drives.  They are Maxtor 80Gb 7200RPM ATA133 drives which are S.M.A.R.T. capable.  Only the primary drive (master on the primary IDE) displays S.M.A.R.T values in SpeedFan.  The other drive is set as a slave on the secondary IDE (my CD-R-RW is set as the master on the secondary IDE).
There have sure been a lot of wierd things about this motherboard.  Thank you everyone for your input so far.  Still need more help!!
    John

  • Constantly disconnected, is it the modem?

In the last month or so, my modem has been disconnecting every 3 to 7 minutes, sometimes I can stay connected up to 20 minutes, once in a great while it will remain connected over an hour. About every 6 attempts, I get a 'can't connect to server, check your settings' error, at which time I immediately try again and it connects. The error is usually, "the modem has unexpectedly hung up".
My question is, is it my modem, or have the phone lines in my area reached such a dismal state that I can't stay connected? Even though the phone connection seems clear for voice, I also have problems sending faxes (external fax) and get 'poor line condition' errors - which has been going on for years.
Back in the days when web pages were designed for 56k modems, I could back the modem down to 32k. Nowadays it takes days for a page to load at that speed. I am getting desperate. I am 16 miles from any broadband source, and cell phone coverage is more off than on, so broadband is not an option for me. I have it at work, so I know what I'm missing - wish it was the other way 'round.

Dial up phone service is the absolute worst media for data communications. The copper wire between you and the central office (CO) probably is run on joint use poles. That means that power cables are within ten feet of the phone cable and will induce AC into it. The twists per inch are less that CAT 3.
How old is the cable? What type of sheath does it have? Is it grounded properly? Did a splicer put a splicing connector in his mouth and get saliva on it causing the wire to act like a low band AM antenna? Do you have rodents that like to sharpen their teeth on the cable?
All of the above is just betewwn you and the local CO. What type of switch does the CO use? Solid state, crossbar or step by step? Crossbar and step by step will cause line noise every time a connection is made or broken.
You mentioned that you're 16 miles from the nearest dsl source. This means that you're probably going over a carrier system to get to the closest modem pool. What kind of carrier is used? When your call goes over a carrier is voice compression used? What level; 32K, 24K, 16K, 8K?
On top of everything else you will never take the same path through the public switched network. Sometimes it'll work great, sometimes you're toast.
The telcos will not guarantee any data transmission over the voice network. In fact they don't want you doing data because it completly wrecks their Centium Call Second (ccs) calculations.

  • HELP ! ! ! - Modem disconnects for no apparent reason and won't reconnect

HELP!!! My modem has been disconnecting for no apparent reason and then when I try to reconnect, it will seem to start the process, and then switch to "Disconnecting . . ." which will then run without an apparent end until I restart the computer. On Tue. and Wed. it dropped the connection promptly at about 6:45. Thursday it dropped at about 8:15. Please help me with this. I don't like having to do a restart in the middle of my work!

Mail accounts have two separate sets of credentials and settings.  One set of credentials for inbound (receiving) mail and also used for accessing any mail you've saved on your ISP mail server — POP or IMAP is used for that — and one set for outbound (sending) email messages out — SMTP is used for that.
Your outgoing email settings are likely incorrect; here is Apple's support document (TS3276)
You can use the Connection Doctor (Mail.app Window > Connection Doctor) to get (and show details) but your description certainly seems that your outbound (SMTP) settings — server name, port, username, password, whether SSL/TLS is disabled (unlikely) or enabled (likely) — don't match what your mail ISP requires.
In Mail.app, the inbound (POP or IMAP) mail account settings are easy to find.  Mail.app Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information.  The sending (SMTP)Nsettings are buried, and you have to select the inbound (POP or IMAP) settings (Mail.app Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information) and then switch the Outbound SMTP Server pop-up setting to its Edit SMTP Server List setting, and you'll get a whole different set of settings shown.  Select the SMTP server for your ISP from the list, and then edit the settings to match the requirements.
I unfortunately can't tell you what the settings need to be, because the required settings can and do differ by ISP.

  • Modem disconnection after certain time

I am using my nokia phone for getting Internet connection to my computer. As you know the phone acts as modem. The modem gets disconnected when the time reach 2 hours. It disconnects automatically when it is 2 hours. I had tried in different sim card and different settings etc  but the result is same. I tried installing latest PC suite and nokia OVI suite but the result is same. The modem automatically disconnects when it is 2 hours. I can't find a way to extend the time limit. I called sim card support, but they are not able to get the exact reason. When the connection is established in the phone using wap, it stays long for more than 14 hours. But when it acts as modem it correctly disconnects when the time is 2 hours. Please help to to increase the time limit of modem connection. I am using windows 7 32 bit. My phone software is up to date and I had tried after restoring the phone to factory settings also. I want to know how to adjust the time limit of the modem to stay connected for long. How to change the time limit for modem connection in the computer?
    Thank you.

    Hi again:
(Chuckling at myself), that is very true!
As you know, you can tell the computer to shut down on a schedule (energy saver), but I do not know of anything that would do what you want.
