Modem for AirPort Base Station?

Hello there,
I have to purchase a modem and I need to find out if the one I want is compatible with my AirPort Base Station. The one I'm thinking of purchasing is one of Cox Cable's preferred modems: Motorola SB6121. I can't spend a lot of money and this one seems within my budget.
I'd like to find out if there are compatibility issues before I spend the money on this particular modem. Also, will I need to purchase a cable to connect to the modem? I have an ethernet cable, but I'm a cable short if I DO hook up the modem with a cable. Sorry for my ignorance... I'm doing this alone and trying to figure out and learn for the future!
Thank you SO much for any help or advice offered!

Bookgirl,
I agree with Keith Doherty, that you should check with Cox cable.  On their website, they do state that they no longer support OsX 10.2 & 10.3, and 10.5, but they do support  OSX 10.6 and 10.7 so a chat with their tech rep would be advisable.  You'll need to give them a good description of what equipment you'll be using on your  LAN (Local Area Network.)
As far as your cabling needs, the Motorola SB6121 has a standard coaxial input connector, so you would simply use the cable provided by Cox to connect to it.  The output does require an ethernet cable between it and your airport base station.
Feel free to ask any questions you have, there is always someone on this board who will be happy to help.

Downloading the right file for XP?  Check to make sure that you are running XP SP3.

AirPort Utility is required if you need to set up or change the settings on an Apple AirPort router.  It is not required if you are simply connecting to the wireless network from a PC.

  • What kind of password (WEP, WAP, WAP2) to choose for Airport Base Station?

    Hi,
I just got an Apple TV. I am using an Airport Base Station to connect to the Internet wireless with my iMac. So far without any password-protection (very neglectant, I know).
i want to password protect but I am getting confused on how to do this.
Can someone please explain in basic language, as I am not a computer-geek, how I should do this and what kind of password I should use. WEP, WAP, WAP2 - that's way to confusing for me. What should I use so that the ATV is functioning properly?

The tv uses all these types of security, WEP is the weakest and WPA2 is the strongest security. Each allows you to enter varying lengths of passwords, in theory the longer the password the more secure but I wouldn't always say that was true (i.e. '1W3e7' is likely to be more secure than 'password1').
I use WPA2 with an eight character password.

  • What password (WEP, WAP, WAP2) to choose for Airport Base Station?

    Hi,
I just got an Airport Base Station and now I connect to the Internet wireless with my iMac.
However, I am getting confused how to password protect this wirelss connection so that my neighbors don't use it.
Can someone please explain in basic language, as i am not a computer-geek, how I should do this and what kind of password I should use. WEP, WAP, WAP2 - that's way to confusing for me.
Also I want to get an Apple TV later this month. I heard that the kind of security setting is important for the ATV to function without problems.

WPA2 - Absolute strongest when used with a non-dictionary password (don't use a word from the dictionary as your password). Unfortunately some older equipment may not be compatible with WPA2.
WPA - Nearly as strong as WPA2 when used with a non-dictionary password. Unfortunately some older equipment may not be compatible with WPA.
128 bit WEP - Relatively weak and only recommended if you are using equipment which is not compatible with WPA2 or WPA.
40/64 bit WEP - Extremely weak and only recommended if none of the others is compatible with your equipment.

  • QuickerTek 27dBm Transceiver for AirPort Base Station

    Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone out there has tried this.
Situation: I am living in a townhouse on the third floor and we have an Airport Extreme is on the first floor. I am currently bridging the signal with a Airport express on the 2nd floor but i don't get a great signal up on the third ... Especially as I use a Powerbook!! It must be said however that there are lots of walls/floors in the way
Advice: I was thinking of buying the QuickerTek Transceiver to help solve this problem ($190) but wanted to check whether any of you think that there might be issues given the set-up. Also if you have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. The web page http://www.quickertek.com/27dbtrans.html says that you can get up to half a Mile line of sight, but I was not sure what that meant when walls were involved.
    Thanks for any suggestions
    Nicholas

Sorry, but the Dual Ethernet version does not support WDS ... meaning that you will not be able to extend the wireless range of Linksys router via a wireless connection with the AirPort. The only option would be if the two routers can be interconnected by Ethernet. You can then configure both for a roaming network. Please check out the following Apple Support article which provides additional details about these types of networks.

  • Airport Base station or Airport express to use wirelessly for dial up ?

I have an Ibook G4 1.33 with a Airport extreme card.
I currently have it set it up to the wireless modem that my phone company provided for me for my DSL service.
Unfortunately I am moving to an area that does not have DSL service. I would like to know if I can set up my Ibook to use it wirelessly and have it connected to an Airport base station or Airport express in order to have my dial up service to work wirelessly???? So Airport base station or Aiport Express?? Many Thanks in advance- Geof
    IBook G4 1.33 12 1.5GB, Vintage Imac , Ipod with video, Ipod Nano   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The only base station with dial-up capability (in addition to traditional ethernet equipped modem capability) is the AirPort Extreme Base Station w/modem. Check the Apple Store to look over the details, and make sure you are looking at the AEBS with the modem (there is also a version without a dial-up modem which will not work in your application).

  • Can you reset the password for my airport base station?

I am trying to connect my Airport Extreme to my new modem and i need to open the Airport utility to see what the problem is however i do not have the password to the Airport base station.  Apparently it is not the wireless password that i set previously set up.

If you have a Mac that can connect to your wireless network and you're using an Apple AirPort Base Station, then simply use AirPort Utility. From the Base Station menu, select Show Passwords...
If you don't have a Mac, reset your wireless network password by momentarily depressing the reset button on your AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. Press the button for one full second, no more. Then, configure a new password using AirPort Utility.
If you can't connect to your wireless network, or you are not using an Apple AirPort Base Station, you can use the procedure that follows below to retrieve it from your Mac's Keychain.
Your wireless network password is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
You must first have an Administrator account on a Mac that you use with that AirPort Base Station, one that is used to connect to your AirPort network.
On that Mac, open the Utilities folder. Find Keychain Access and launch it.
In the search field at the upper right, type Airport. All the Keychain entries for your base station will appear there, as well as other entries.
Look at the column "Kind". The entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort network password" (not "AirPort base station password" or anything else).
If you are trying to recover the AirPort Base Station password then the entry you want to select will be labeled "AirPort base station password" not "AirPort network password".
Double-click that, and in the window that appears check the box for "Show password".
You will get the following window:
In the Password field type your Mac's Administrator password - the same one you used to log in to that Mac.
Then, click Allow, and your wireless network password will appear in the "Show password" field:
    Make note of it.
Close the window, then quit Keychain Access.

  • Need some help settin' up an Airport base station for dialup

Afternoon, all. As the handle says, I'm a newbie and I need some LGI about setting up an Airport base station to dial out. I just got a Macbook 2.0 yesterday, and I'm still trying to deal with the setup. This model has the 10.5 OS.
The Airport I'm using is not the square unit now available. This particular unit is a circular base with a conical shape. I got this model because it has the connection for a standard telephone connector. It's also 'sposed to have a built-in modem.
I have gotten the computer to connect to the base station wirelessly, but I am having trouble setting things up to get the modem to dial out to my ISP (netscape.)
Any assistance or walk-throughs would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Hello newbietoapple. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Perform a "hard" reset of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
Either connect to the AEBS's wireless network or connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
    o Wireless Security: Not enabled
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    o Connect Using: Modem (V.90)
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (checked)
o Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

  • My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

  • I deleted Bonjour, since I don't need it for remote printing.  Now I get the message " Airport Base Station has stopped working: and also a message saying APAgent.exe can't be found.  What to do??? Thanks.

I deleted Bonjour since I don't need it for remote printing.  Now on start-up I get the message: "Airport Base Station Agent has stopped working" and also message: "can't find APAgent.exe.:  Do I need AP Agent??  What to do??  Thanks.

The APAgent monitors your AirPort base station and informs you if there are things like firmware updates available. This utility relies on Bonjour, but is not required for base station operation. However, Bonjour makes it easier for your PC to "find" the base station via the AirPort Utility and I would recommend that you keep it installed. If you don't want the APAgent, you can just use the Apple Updater utility (that was also installed when the AirPort Utility was installed) to remove it.

  • AirPort Base Station Update 2007-001 for Windows

    Hi,
Is anyone else having problems after applying the latest AirPort Base Station update (version 5.1) found here
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportbasestationupdate2007001forwindows .html
Before this update I was able to use the AirPort Utility in Windows (version 5.0) but now I receive the following error
AirPort Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    ModName: kernel32.dll

If you mean the hexidecimal equivalent of the alphanumeric password, then you can find this via the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
On the AirPort Utility's menubar select Base Station > Equivalent Network Password
