Modem lights

Hello,
My old modem died so I had to get a new one.  I now have a Westell 6100.
The online documentation says that the Internet light should be a solid green.
However, on mine it flashes.  Is there something wrong?
Thanks!

Your modem has two lights.  The first is DSL which makes a signal connection between Verizon's DSLAM and your modem.  What does that report?  Second is internet which reports a router making a proper conversation to the DSLAM (on solid), is trying to start a conversation (flashing), or extinguished if only connected as a bridge (only echos what DSLAM says).

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • In Lookout 4.0.1 why does launching the L4P tie up the modem when there's no reference to the modem in the file??

Running Lookout 4.0.1 on an NT machine. Lookout launches fine, but when the process file is started the "TR" lamp on the modem lights up. There is no reference to the modem in the L4P; no objects use it. The DL205 object uses Com 1 (configured in Lookout as hardwired)via DB9 serial RS-232 to communicate with the PLC port but computer's modem is on Com2. This anomaly is preventing another application from using the modem to dial-out alarms. What's up with this?

    Khalid:
We do not supply the computer used by the customer so we cannot control consistency or choice of hardware. That said, we HAVE successfully used Lookout and the other application (the one that's trying to access the modem) many times in other computers without having this "conflict".
The built-in COM port is being used.
I did check the text in the LKS. file before posting: no reference to COM2.
The site is 10 hrs away. They won't allow any VPN connections, so we can't assist remotely.
Unless someone can add another suggestion, I'm resigned to hand this over solely to the customer's IT dept saying it's THEIR problem.

  • ATT and 2Wire 2701HG-B modem

I just spent several hours with various people at AT&T tech support. I have the 2Wire 2701HG-B modem. When I connect via ethernet all was well. However, I could not connect via airport. I could find my network and it showed a strong signal. The modem light indicated that wireless was activated. However, the IP address was not setting correctly.
The solution the last tech gave me was to prepend the WEP password (the 10 digit encryption key on the bottom of the modem) with a dollar sign ("$") [no quotation marks], so it looks like $xxxxxxxxxx. If you've already saved the number to your KeyChain, just prepend it there.
Anyway, that is what worked for me. The tech was funny; he said something like, "Don't ask me why it works, it just does."
If you are having similar problems, I hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to use USB modem on Toshiba AT100 tablet?

    Hi all!
I just purchased a Toshiba Tablet and I was just wondering whether it is possible that the Tablet could use a usb modem. My usb modem lights up to say its connected but cannot find where it registers as an option.

Found this info on some Android webpages:
+Sadly, you cant plug a 3G modem into the USB as there are currently no drivers available. Perhaps later down the track Google will add support for the mobile dongle in its tablet OS, but for now, youll have to jump onto WiFi or a wireless mobile hotspot to get the AT100 online+

  • Do I need (or do I even have) a NIC card? Modem works, comp not responding

    Hi All,
Recently we have been experiencing connection problems with our cable modem and Mac. We've had our cable company out several times and I finally believe they have resolved any problems on their end.
Currently all of the cable modem lights are on (normally indicating we should be able to connect) and we are still not connecting. During a phone call to one of our cable techs he asked me to pull up System Preferences and click on Network. Upon doing this I then, under the "Show" drop down menu chose "Network Status". He and I were both surprized that the only thing that showed up in the dialog box was Internal Modem. There was no "Built in Ethernet" which is how our modem is connected to our Mac. He said that Built in Eternet should be there and that I need to get a new NIC (Network Interface Card) to resolve the problem so that the computer can communicate with the modem. Makes sense to me.
My question is this: Is there such a card for a Mac or was he referring to a PC type of card that performs that function. From my converstion with him he is obviously somewhat conversant with Macs (or had good scripts, prompts to read from) so I left our conversation thinking he knew what he was talking about. Is this a piece of hardware or software? I got the impression from him it was a piece of software that needed to be reinstalled. Lastly, where would I obtain the software/hardware?
Sorry about the long post. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,

Both of the G4 Macs you mentioned have built-in Ethernet on the motherboard. They would not require a PCI card to support this function unless the built-in Ethernet hardware on the motherboard were defective (this does not happen often), or you wanted to run much faster than the speed provided by the built-in Ethernet (not generally needed unless you are using a File Server at your location).
You already have a top-notch Apple brand Ethernet interface. Do not let your ISP talk you into installing a different PCI-slot NIC card unless you are certain the motherboard Ethernet is defective.

All you have to do is go to msconfig and disable all start up apps except the touch pad and hit restart. This is immediately after the second in two days 2 hour recovery which fixes the problem. After watching while all the flab gets reinstalled and upon rebooting, I checked the fn key, its working. I went straight to msconfig and did what I described above checking the fn key while the restart choice is waiting.... it's working. After restart fn key and all the F keys at the top of the keyboard are dead and the wireless modem is also dead. Even tho the modem light is on.  I go back to msconfig and enable all startup apps  to no avail. I type in flash and restart the flash cards and it actually worked ONCE. I disable again as above and restart and every thing is dead again like before only now it's another two hours of reloading crap I don't need to get this other crap I don't need to work again. Surely...... there is a better way to turn the coffee shop modem on and off. What is it please? If this is the best toshi can do with a marketing device they are in trouble.

  • Continually knocked off home network while cable modem looks normal

I have a cable modem connected to an Airport Extreme base station (circa 2005, so it's the 802.11b/g). Almost every day I get knocked off my home network and the name of the network that shows up is "linksys" for some reason. The cable modem lights continue to flash in their normal sequence. I live in a private house, not an apartment building.
What I then do is follow a protocol that I discovered on this site (I don't remember if it was this forum) a couple of years ago -- I shut down all the computers, unplug the modem and Airport, wait five minutes, and then plug everything back in sequence.
Last night after I got through yelling at my cable company, they ran some tests remotely and suggested that the problem was with the Airport base station. How can I check for the connectivity of that? What in the System Preferences or Airport Setup can I look at? Thanks.

Change the wireless channel on your AirPort Extreme to try to avoid the interference that you are picking up from the Linksys router in your vicinity.
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label located just below the row of icons
    Start with Channel 11
    Update to save your changes
Keep trying different channels working your way down until you find a clear channel, or you run out of channels

  • New  cable modem, airport  has green status, still NO internet connection??

Airport extreme worked amazing with macbook for 8 months! One day my cable modem was no longer working. Had internet provider come and install a new modem.
The new modem now works, and cable provider assured internet worked through a direct ethernet connection to macbook. However when I reset up the airport I can not access internet.
All modem lights are working properly and airport has green light. I am linked to my network.
I have troubleshooted with applecare 3 times with no success. They sent me to the mac store, the store checked both my macbook and airport. Said they are working properly.
Came home and did all the resets of both modem and airport. No success! Applecare says everything matches up, internet provider says everything matches up. But I can still not access internet with airport.

Your cable modem needs a complete reset to clear its memory.
Power it down for at least 30 minutes (Some ISPs will take longer for their equipment to reset) and pull the battery in it if it is easily accessible. Power down everything else in your network as well.
Start the modem first and let it run 4-5 minutes alone, then start the router for a few minutes and then start your computers.
If no luck, power down the modem for 2 hours and try the procedure again.
Please post back on your results.

  • AE works, modem works, but can't get online

This problem is driving me batty! I recently purchased a new G4 Powerbook (running Tiger 10.4.2) and Airport Express directly from Apple. At the time I didn't have internet access at my house yet but was planning on getting it within a few weeks. I was ecstatic that in the meantime I was able to take my brand spanking new computer and AE to a friend's house and get online wirelessly from there quite easily by connecting the AE to their home router. I later had Adelphia come out to my house and install cable internet. The cable tech didn't know beans about routers but he did get my internet working pretty quickly through a direct ethernet connection from the RCA DCM425 modem to my laptop. After he left I surfed online for a bit and then decided to try hooking up the AE, expecting it to work as simply as it had at my friend's house.
    Ha!
I have been messing with this thing for nearly a week now and have not been able to figure out what in the world is the problem. It works beautifully at my friend's house and not at all at mine. AE has a green light, the modem lights look right and it works when connected directly to my computer, I have a full signal and airport is on and the checkmark is on next to my network and interference robustness is on and Internet Connect says I'm connected via ethernet and all systems are go.......but when I try to open a webpage (any page), Safari sits and thinks for the longest time before telling me I'm not connected to the ethernet. Power cycling everything and exhaustively searching all the settings hasn't helped.
It can't be the AE because it works at my friend's house, it can't be the modem because it works when I'm hooked in directly, so it has to be some setting somewhere in my laptop, right? I know I'm supposed to be on DHCP, not PPPoE, I've tried it with and without distributed IP addresses, I've gone through Network Diagnostics, Airport setup, Admin Utility, network preferences, Safari preferences....I've tried resetting everything to the defaults, I've downloaded the latest Airport updates, I've tried using a different browser, I've tried holding my breath and crossing my fingers and turning blue, but nothing works. Airport Express is supposed to behave as a wireless router...but instead it's behaving like a mute piece of pretty plastic and I'm losing sleep at night because I can't stand being beaten by a machine. Please help - I'm losing my mind!! Thank you o angels of the discussion boards...

DHCP and PPPoE and where they apply (i.e. at the internet or wireless side of the AX and in the Powerbook OS) can be confusing.
The AX configuration may not be what your cable modem needs, although it may have been fine with your friends internet connection (was it a cable modem like yours or a DSL modem router?).
Can you check your laptop Network Preferences settings for the successful ethernet wired connection to your cable modem - ( but make sure it is connected up and working for the internet first). Then check what it shows for the Built-in Ethernet configuration TCP and PPPoE tabs.
This should clarify what is needed for the AX configuration and the Powerbook when using the AX, and maybe put you on the right track.

  • WRT54GS v6 causing cable modem to reboot

If its not one thing its another.. I am sooo tired of this crap.   It used to be that my router could not establish a WAN IP from my provider (COX).  releasing and renewing sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.
Now that I've been able to hold onto a IP for a while now, the cable modem keeps dropping (cable light on modem will flash...modem will reboot immediately and internet service restored)  .  But it doesn't last. keeps rebooting on its own.  I know its not the cable modem because connecting the desktop PC directly to the cable modem I can maintain a consistent internet signal .  Only when I reconnect the router do I have problems with the modem rebooting on its own.  This can happen several times  in any lenght of time.  I think it has something to do with the data flow , I dont know.   The cable modem will only reboot itself after I navigate the internet for a while.  If I'm not using the internet, the modem stays green all the time.
I'd get another router in a heartbeat if I thought that would solve all my problems, but Netgear is out of the question from previous bad experienct and I read other forums that suggest Belkin and Dlink are not problem free either.

I also have a dedicated coax line into my cable modem.   If it was a signal issue I would think the modem would go down with or without me actually using the internet. I leave the modem and router powered continuously through the night.  All lights on the modem are solid green until I start to go to a few urls.  Like this morning.  When I first got on the computer all was fine until...I was able to go to a couple of pages then the connection dropped and the cable modem light started to flash but rebooted and the connection was restored for a while but it doesnt last.  This constant rebooting happens several times throughout the day.
If I call COX they will just tell  me to plug the computer directly into the modem and if it works ok (and it does) they will tell me its the router and not their problem.

  • Final attempt at a solution ... broadband drop out

Perhaps someone can help before - now being contract free - I leave BT.
For the last 9 months or so, we find ourselves unable to use our broadband connection without rebooting the hub.  We have replaced the ADSL filter countless times, have used the test socket, have had the line checked, have left the thing unrest for 10 days (going without internet), had the noise adjusted up and down, I have used each and every wireless channel.  When things go wrong, no lights on the homehub (incidentally, HH2, but I have also used a HH1 without luck) change and all looks normal but we find ourselves unable to connect.  The connection mostly seems to go in the evening, but it's also been hopeless this afternoon (for example), most recent afternoons and also on Sunday mornings.  In effect, there is no pattern...  To get going again, all we have to do is reset, but that's not exactly convenient.
I asked about 9 months ago for a change to HH3 in case that helped.  I don't think it will.  I am currently using a linksys modem and router to see what happens - guess what? same problem!  Interestingly, when it goes down, the modem lights again suggest there is nothing wrong with the connection.
BT have now worked out my contract is up and are telling me to recontract and negotiate to receive a HH3 - yes, I have to negotiate to get one despite always and for ever being with BT. If the problem persists, they will see what they can do.
Of course, I have no intention of getting stuck with a new contract for a piece of equipment that won't solve the problem.  But I am also rather reticent to leave BT - not least because to have any confidence of not suffering problems in future, I think I need to move away from using the same phone line which means going cable...
Does anyone have any ideas?  I attach my latest status report from my linksys modem...
    Thanks!
    GBH1000

    Hi.  Thanks for coming back.
I haven't solved anything - including previous error probs - but life was very hectic and while I allowed the contract to tick down, I reset the hub twice a day and coped.  I've only been waging a final battle because it feels like a big risk switching providers if this can be fixed...
Here are the latest stats.  As you can see I have reinstalled the BT HH2 because my wife uses the BB talk facility some evenings (including tonight) and it's easier to use the hub.
Anyway - here you go.  These numbers mean nothing to me.  Interestingly, I have NEVER been asked about them by anyone at BT either!
