  • Modem mode for a Hub 5?

After years on Virgin Media where I used an ASUS router alongside a Virgin cable modem, I now find myself having moved house stuck on BT Infinity. So far, 2 weeks in, the service (both internet and customer service) is staggeringly awful.
As well the and lies from customer service and the terrible internet speeds, another issue has arisen. The home hub 5 seems incapable of sustaining 5ghz connections. I have a bunch of 5ghz devices, mostly Apple stuff, but also a Samsung Smart TV. All of them will suffer massive slow downs on 5ghz to various degrees, and some will eventuallly get cut off from getting any data at all. They still think they're connected, but data will have stopped and will never start again, unless I disconnect then reconnect them.
I've talked to BT about this of course, and even got a replacement hub, but the problems persist. All of these devices worked flawlessly on my old ASUS router on 5ghz. I could use 2.4ghz of course, and I have to do just that as the 5ghz is so broken, but speeds are around half that of 5ghz. (which were not exactly impressive to begin with)
Is it possible to stick the hub 5 in a dumb modem only mode, to essentially make it like a Virgin Media cable modem? Then I could get a real wifi router, one which actually knows how to put out a 5ghz signal, and rely on that instead.
Being with BT is like going back in time by about 10 years. It's amazing how a company so big could offer a service so comprehensively terrible.

The closest you can get to modem mode with the HH5 is to put the new router into the DMZ on the HH5 and maybe turn off wifi, uPNP and the firewall on the HH5 too.
Alternatively, there are various things you can do with the HH5 to try and fix the wifi - turn off smart setup, split the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands using different SSIDs, select your own channel instead of Automatic, change the Wireless Interface type to the highest speed.

  • [HELP] Asha 210 - GSM Modem Mode

    Dear all,
In Win7 (a newly installed win7), after installing "Nokia_Connectivity_Cable_Driver", I am able to see the Nokia Asha 210 appears as a com port.
I connect to that com port using HyperTrm.exe (copied from WinXp). Connect using 9600 8N1.
When I type "AT&V" The terminal just hang for approximately 30sec to 1min before return, and shows no results.
May I know what I can do to enable this modem mode again?
It used to work before this.
    TIA.
    Kwan

    I found the issue.
In Device Manager it shows that Asha 210 is connected to COM3, but it actual fact I can only get response from COM4.
Something wrong with the Asha driver.

  • Time Capsule & Netgear DG834GT in Modem Mode - Not working

I've just taken delivery of a 1TB Time Capsule. I've switched my existing Netgear DG384GT modem/router into modem only mode, so routing functionality is disabled. I just want to use the DG834GT as a simple ADSL modem, whilst utilising the features (DHCP, wireless etc) of the TC.
I've connected the two together, but I can't get a green light on the TC. The DG834GT definitely has an internet connection. I have the TC set to "Share a public IP address", but it doesn't appear to be able to get an ip address from the DG834GT. TCP/IP is set to use DHCP. I've tried everything, without success.
The only way I've managed to get the working together is by re-enabling DHCP and NAT in the DG834GT, and setting the TC to use bridge mode. This is not what I want to do, as my aging DG384GT has problems when too many wireless devices try to connect.
Am I missing something? How can I get the TC to obtain the ip address from the DG834GT? I don't want to have to buy an ADSL modem unless I really need to.
    Help!
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the discussions!
Can you clarify if you have DSL service there? In other words, when you first setup the Netgear to connect to your service, did you enter your user name and password into the device to connect to the internet?

  • Put the modem in modem or router mode?

    Hi,
Connecting an airport express via an ethernet cable to a Netgear DG632 unit.
This has the option of acting like a router or as a basic adsl modem. Which should I choose? Better to let the AE unit take care of the DHCP etc. ?
    Look forward to your thoughts,
    Ben

If you can only connect one computer at a time, then likely your DG632 is already in "modem mode".
That being the case, cable the Airport Express to the ethernet LAN port on the DG632. Make sure the Airport Express's router is enabled - in the Airport Admin Utility, the box should be checked next to "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT".
By the way - what were you referring to when you said "main airport (there is many)"?

  • Somewhat Frightening Message after Changing Modem / Router Hardware

Yesterday, I changed my DSL Modem/Router to be a DSL Modem only, and added a different router by using its WAN port.
This essentially shut off control of the original modem/router, and moved it to the new router.
Now, we have 4 computers connected via ethernet cables, and none on Wireless. All are turned off, except my partner's Windows XP machine, which, suddenly today has a new message at the bottom left of his Login Window:
(Red Button) "Turn off Bills Modem Mods"
Who/Where did this come from? My computer's name is "Bill Lastname" ...
All computers are set to use TCP/IP Using Automatic DCHP selection of local IP Address and other parameters.

Not being a Windows user, I didn't realize I had inadvertantly input "Bills Modem Mods" to create a new account on the HP ... testing the new modem/router setup ... so that's why it started to appear as an option at the bottom of his signin window ...

Seems like something is wrong in netctl profile and I need to teach netctl to use wvdial instead of whatever-it-uses-now for mobile_ppp connection.
So the question is: "Is this possible to make netctl profile based on wvdial connection? Or is this possible to fix abovr netctl mobile_ppp profile?"
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing this bit of information. This solved the issue for me. But before fixing this, I also had to change the file at another position: I had to escape the quotes around the IP in the connect string setting the APN, so that it now looks like this:
    ${AccessPointName:+'OK-AT-OK' 'AT+CGDCONT=1,\"IP\",$(quote_word "$AccessPointName")'}
Without this change, I was getting errors like this:
    May 04 10:25:26 bppi chat[2105]: send (AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,"web.vodafone.de"^M)
    May 04 10:25:27 bppi chat[2105]: expect (OK)

  • Using an X-Modem M3 with an Airport Extreme and having iChat video problems

    Hi,
I have been posting on the iChat section over the last week or so regarding a big problem I have with iChat4 Video. I have been getting some great help over there, but it has been mentioned to me that I may be able to pick up some help in this Topic regarding any more detailed known issues on the X-modem M3 or Airport Extreme.
I am still very new to this Discussion board use, so I hope it's ok to jump in like this and post a link to my ongoing discussion in iChat. See below.....
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1323485&tstart=0
I didn't want to copy all of my message again into here as I thought it best that if you can help you could use the link.
If anyone can help throw some light on this, then many thanks.

The X-Modem in the default modem mode has no influence over the data being transferred. It is a modem not a router so it does not block any communication ports. Your iChat problems must be either on the Airport or the computer.
Seeing as how iChat works fine when the modem is connected to the computer via Ethernet it shows that the modem is working fine and that your ISP doesn't seem to be doing any blocking that would prevent iChat from working.
It really looks like the Airport Extreme is the culprit, perhaps the firewall on the computer is not properly allowing iChat to tell the Airport what ports it should open. Have you tried switching the firewall off completely at both ends ? Seeing as how the computers are behind Airports there is no need to worry about turning the firewall off for testing.

  • Using C7 as USB-modem under Windows 8.1 - connecti...

    Hello there,
my girl-friend used her C7-00 as a wifi-tethering device until recently when she got her new computer that came with  Windows 8.1.
Because 8.1 does not support WEP-Hotspot, I decided to hook up the phone using USB-cable and Nokia Suite.  The connection goes alright, and she can surf through her C7 for a while, but then after 2 minutes approximately Nokia Suite says the connection has been dropped. This happens every time.  Internet works perfectly on the phone.
Tried solutions: restarting phone, updating software, switching USB-modem mode, checking access-point configuration in Nokia Suite
Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to make this work ?  Otherwise we will have to buy a new smartphone :-(.

    Hi, sennerin.
Welcome to Nokia Support Discussions Forum!
Regarding your concern, Nokia Suite is not compatible with PC which runs Windows 8.1 OS. You can check the compatible Operating System of PC for Nokia Suite here: Nokia Suite. That is the reason why the connection is not that stable when using the phone as an internet modem.

  • Use N8 as modem ?

    Hi.
When USB-connected in OVI Suite mode, I can see the "Nokia USB modem" in the Device Manager in my Windows XP (and Windows 7 on another PC).
But, as soon I change to modem-mode (Connect PC t Internet) it dissapears from the Device Manager.
So, I can't use it  as a modem in my software (PC anywhere). In Ovi suite mode PC AW can't connect to another device and if I change to Modem mode, of course PC AW says "thera are no modems".
    What to do ?
    Thanks.
    //Tarzzz99

If you reset your device or use *#7370#, then connect to net option of USB cable does not work. the partition where modem drivers were installed in the Phone is gone after hard reset.
I have tried so many things to restore from backups I have kept before resetting, but it doesnot work.
    SpecK73 wrote:
The N8 is extremely flexible when it comes to using it as a modem.
You can connect it to Ovi Suite with the N8's USB connection in 'Nokia Ovi Suite' mode and then use the Ovi Suite software to connect the PC to the internet via your 3G provider.
Alternatively you can put the N8's USB into 'Conn. PC to net' mode and then the phone appears to talk directly with Windows to arrange a connection that does not require Ovi Suite to be running. This is the mode which I use most of the time and it works extremely well. I like it because it does not require any software to be preloaded on the PC you're trying to connect to the Net.
You can also tether the phone with the Windows OS directly using Bluetooth and operate it as a Bluetooth modem.
You can create a Bluetooth connection with Ovi Suite and have the software sort it out in the same way it does with the USB cable. That works nicely and mean you don't need to have your cable handy.
You can run the stupidly named but very impressive JoikuSpot software that connects to your 3G Internet and creates a Wifi hotspot that other devices can use. Be aware that the free version of this software does not feature any security. Within moments of creating one of these Wifi hotspots in my hotel room I had some hideous Apple devices leaching off it. I think I might buy the full version because it's really very good.
So there you are. Many options. I doubt any other device can better them. I trust that you'll find one that meet your needs.

  • Cannot use my Q10 as a modem for my pc

Hi, need some help here....   I have follow all the step but when I try to activate the modem mode, nothing happen....  It try to connect, but after few second it just stop.   I have no network problem (I am able to connect to internet with my bb), but cannot share with my computer......   Help please.
    Seb

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Typically, that means that you have not activated, from your carrier (Bell), the service for this. I found an easier test was to, rather than trying the Modem method, to activate the HotSpot function on my device...if my data plan from my carrier is inadequate, I am directed to a page instructing me so.
I'd recommend you ring up Bell and inquire with them about if your service plan allows this function...and then decide how to proceed from there.
    Good luck!

If you mean the modem, yes.
If you mean a modem router, yes, but only as an access point, not as a router (unless the Netgear supports modem mode).
