Modem-modem Networking with eMac and 6320

Greetings:
Thanks for those here who've rendered me assistance. You're indeed community!
First off, for many reasons I've no other alternative to my problem but this solution. There's no going off buying anything or such. My eMac's ethernet ability nearly shot via infamous video card problem. Can't even truck it off for special extended warranty repairs for a LONG while. Keeping a roof's more important right now.
I want to create a null modem like the good-old OS7 days between my OS 1.4.8 eMac and OS9/OS8 6320 just by modem-to-modem. If there's ANY formula to do this I'd be most grateful!
Thanks

The Modem to Modem connection... if you could get it to work, would be painfully slow.
Other than that though... You'd need a USB>Serial adapter to get a Null Modem connection, like...
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/usb_serial.htm
http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/usa19hs/homepage.spml
Then you'll need a Terminal APP on both, I suggest Black Night for the 6320/OS8/9, and ZTerm for the eMac/OSX.
Another solution would be an Ethernet/Wireless for the 6320... much faster easier solution if you have Airport/Wireless on the eMac already.

I cannot connect my Ipad to a Comcast modem network with the correct password. Other devices work fine.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

  • Full mesh VPN solution for on MPLS network with PE and CPEs

    Hi,
We are trying to evaluate some best solution for Hub-Spoke mesh vpn solution in a MPLS network. The VPN hub router will be in PE router and all the VPN spoke will be in CPE.
Can someone please let us know what will be the best vpn solution, we understands that there will be some technical limitations going with GETVPN but still we did counld find any documenation for possiblity of using DMVPN.
How about the recent flexvpn, can fex-vpn work on this requirement, where can i get a design/configuration document.?
    thanks in advance.

    Hello,
GetVPN is intended for (ANY-to-ANY) type of VPN communication, over an MPLS network with Hub and Spoke Topology, your best Option is to look for Cisco (DMVPN) implementation where this type of VPN is primarily designed for Hub & Spoke.

  • Setting up network with newer and older AirPort Extremes

Okay, I thought this was going to be so simple. I have a newer (like a year old - square) Airport Extreme that I have three computers wirelessly hooked up to in the house. Great... so now, I want to hook up the old iMac in my son's room that doesn't have a wireless card to the network. It is too far away to use the ethernet cable into the back of my newer Airport Extreme station so I figured I'd dust off the old saucer type base station, plug the ethernet cable into that in my son's room and then just easily get the old base station to network with the newer one wirelessly.
Not so easy. The newer one has no reference how to make a network with other base stations whatsoever and the old book describes how to with the Airport Admin Utility which is not available to the newer version, just Airport Utility and it does not have the WDA options listed. I tried to extend the network and then Doh! The whole network disappeared.
Is this a compatibility issue with the older and newer base stations? Would it just be easier to put in a wireless card to my very old iMac, if that's even possible? Has anyone successfully networked an old and new base station together? If so how?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
When you have an older "g" device (the flying saucer) and a newer "n" device (the square one) in order for them to communicate using wireless only, you must configure both of them in what is known as WDS configuration.
This is a quite tricky setup for most users. The best set of instructions that I've seen for this comes from expert user Tesserax in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
If you elect to try this type of setup, you will probably need to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to get the WDS option to appear. (My guess here is that Apple "hides" it because it slows down the network substantially). But, it's the only way to do what you want to accomplish with and old and new device.
Other options would include the wireless card you mentioned for the iMac. Even better might be a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. One adapter goes near the AirPort Extreme and the other near the iMac. The AC wiring in your home transmits the ethernet signal of the powerline. Works great, almost no configuration required and better than wireless in many cases.

  • P1006 - networked with XP and VIsta-64 not printing more than 2 pages

Hello - I have a dilemma with my HP P1006.  I have the printer directly plugged in (USB) with my XP (32bit) PC.  I have a Vista-64 PC networked with it.  Both (XP-32 and Vista-64) are plugged in directly to the router (not wireless).  My question is why can I not print more than two pages at a time with items opened on the Vista-64 PC?  I CAN print more than two pages with items opened in the XP-32.
    Things I've done:
1 - uninstalled everything & reinstalled the latest drivers for the XP-32.
2 - marked the printer as "sharing" on the XP-32.
3 - confirmed the printer is marked "enable bidirectional sharing" under the printer properties on the XP-32 PC.
    Things I perplexed about:
1 - why won't items (docs, webpages, etc.) print more than two pages at a time from the Vista-64 PC?
2 - is there any reason that I should download a driver for the Vista-64 OS? If so, which PC do I download it to?
3 - I have another printer (Lexmark inkjet) connected in the same way (except it is a serial port not USB) and it can print more than two pages of a document at one time with no problem from either the XP-32 or Vista-64 PC?  Why?
Any thoughts on this situation?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciate.
    Thank you - Jane.

    Hi!
I just get a system message at teh bottom of teh screen saying "output cannot be issued " and it remains on teh same screen . I goto t-code va23 and enter my quotation number and on the top I select sales document ...issue output and select my output type and print preview or prnit , it comes out of that screen into the first screen and at the bottom gives msg "Output cannot be issued". I beleiev its not allowing the smartform to display when there are more than 2 pages , because I tried it with a contact which has 2 pages and it shows output but when I try with the one having more items i.e more than 2 pages it comes out of it . Its a smartform issue and something in the smartform is causing problem I beleive.
    Thanks

  • Sync ical help with emac and macpro?

hello out there.... my son has an emac...we subscribe to fam plan .mac.... want to sync his calendar with mine (i have mac pro laptop). he does not have leapard(not compatible with emac i am told...which stinks bty!). can he sync his ical with mine? or visa versa? thanks!

Syncing is really just for one person with multiple machines so that their calendar moves with them. However, you can Publish and Subscribe to each others calendars.
    Do this on both machines:
Select the calendar in the list at left and choose Publish from the Calendar menu. Choose the options which apply to you, but I do recommend the one "Publish changes automatically". Once you have clicked OK and the calendar is Published successfully, you can choose to send a mail to the other person in the next dialog.
When you get the mail, you'll see a link to subscribe to the other person's calendar. Follow through the options in iCal, this time ensuring you choose "Auto Refresh: Every ... " at the bottom. When you click OK, the calendar will appear in Subscriptions and will be in your calendar view unless you uncheck it.

  • Keymapping problem when working with emacs and openbox

I have an apple keyboard and I had to do some remapping of the keys to make the mod-4 key the first key to the left of the space bar for when working with Emacs.  The below script worked fine when I was using the dwm window manager, but after switching to openbox I have found that instead of swapping keycodes between the option and command keys, only the command key seems to be working since the initial openbox command-space doesn't work when pressing option-space.
One odd thing I noticed, was on the new setup when I click run `showkey` and press the option and command keys I get 56 and 125 respectively, but these keys don't work at all when inserting them into the below script instead of the 64 and 133.
I must admit I created the script below by continually tweaking it until it worked so there could be a much better way of doing it.
    //.xmodmap
    ### capslock => ctrl
    xmodmap -e "clear Lock"
    xmodmap -e "add Control = Caps_Lock"
    ### switch alt and command
    xmodmap -e "keycode 64 = Alt_L"
    xmodmap -e "keycode 133 = Meta_L"
    ### remap of mod 4
    xmodmap -e "clear Mod4"
    xmodmap -e "add Mod4 = Super_L"
** Update:  The Alt key is not being swapped with the command key, but is not just a duplicate.  So no M-x can be done by both Alt-x and Command-x

  • Using MAP on networks with AIX and Oracle

Im new to MAP. We have an environment with Windows and AIX hosts which i want to use MAP on. I see plenty of references to MAP being compatable with Linux and even HP-UX.  But will it also discover AIX hosts too?  In particular, Oracle databases
    on AIX?  Thanks!!

Some distros of Linux and HP-UX for UNIX are what is supported, but it may be possible for MAP to inventory AIX, but no guarantees. For Oracle, when MAP inventories a Linux/UNIX machine, it queries for the RPM and DPKG installations then looks for ‘Oracle’
in the vendor attribute. Any application that is not listed in either of those queries is not discovered by MAP.
Therefore, if Oracle was installed by some other means then it is unlikely to be discovered through this method. Admittedly, I have almost no knowledge of how these services work and if they register software or something else.

  • How do modems interact with efax and ccl scripts to receive calls in 10.5?

I want to do two things:
    1) alter the modem init string used for faxing and receiving calls, and
    2) alter the RING string to detect and respond to other modem responses during the answer process
The machine in question is a PowerBook G4 with an Apple Internal Modem (V.92) running Leopard 10.5.1.
In searching, it seems that Leoard is using efax as its base fax app. I have located the efax plist in the LaunchDaemons folder. It sends the 'answer' command via the 'fax' app to the 'efax' app. This command is an argument key in the plist.
Now, how do I change the modem init string that is used for the purpose of faxing? Also, how do the modem CCL files interact with this whole process - or do they?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I'm either just googling for the wrong things or there aren't many people looking for this information? Most likely the former...

Well, I'm starting to feel like I've got a little blog going on here, since I'm only answering myself - but for anyone else who may someday seek this information, here is a little more:
In Leopard, when you set up the fax in System Preferences/Printers and Fax, it enables an efax plist used by an application called 'launchd'. When your computer boots up, if that plist is indicated as enabled (using a key within the plist), launchd starts up the 'fax' script with parameters matching what is entered in the fax setup in System Preferences. This script starts up the 'efax' application, which runs continuously in the background, waiting for a call to come in.
    The plists involved are:
Library\Preferences\com.apple.print.FaxPrefs.plist -- which contains the actual fax preferences, like phone number and number of rings for example, that are ultimately provided to efax.
System\Library\LaunchDaemons\com.apple.efax.plist -- which is the one used by launchd to start the fax script, and which contains the arguments and path to that script.
efax does not use the CCL scripts; instead, those seem to be used by the Internet Connection modem selection, as I mentioned previously.
efax runs in the background constantly. If it were to crash for some reason, launchd would automatically start it up again - unless the fax functionality is turned off in System Preferences, in which case the efax application would be 'turned off', and would no longer run in the background.
There is a 'lock' feature in efax, which is supposed to temporarily suspend efax while other apps use the modem. So, my next question is whether I can somehow leave the Internet Connect functionality running, exiting when I get the result I want, which would then allow efax to come on up and answer the phone.
Alright, I'm going to admit it - I'm trying to find a way to make Distinctive Ring work with efax. The PowerBook G4 internal modem can sense Distinctive Ring with a +VDR=n,n value added to the initialization string. Once this is added to the init string, the modem will return the amount of time the ringer is on or off, with values like DRON=8 and DROF=40, as well as the normal RING. Using a CCL script, I can look for those values coming in from the modem instead of the usual RING value. (As far as I can tell, I cannot do this with efax directly without changing the actual source code. The RING value it looks for is hard-coded.) So, the question becomes how to transfer control from the Internet Connect to efax, and can I do so soon enough for it to be able to answer the phone before my AT&T CallNotes does?
More to come (if someone else doesn't answer my question before I do

  • Setting up home network with new and old Macs and 1GBps internet connection

I have a 1 GBps internet connection and want to take advantage of it. I have three 802.11ac capable Apple products - a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro and  Imac. The signal currently runs from an Aris modem into a  Netgear router that maxes out at 100mbps. My Apple Extreme (not the new one with 802.11ac) is connected to the Netgear , so choked at 100mbps. Everything runs off Wifi. I have run speedtests on all my computers and nothing runs over 50mbps in the current setup. I also run some home security stuff off "DDNS" that does not work with Apple products (thus the Netgear router) so I need to consider that too. I use two  802.11n extenders around the house. I am being told I cannot use the newer 802.11ac Extemes because it would not work with the DDNS Security stuff. What do I do to maximize speeds from Wifi and keep the DDNS stuff?

What do I do to maximize speeds from Wifi and keep the DDNS stuff?
For maximum Wi-Fi speeds only, use all 802.11ac devices ... both wireless routers & wireless clients. For full DDNS support, only use routers that support this feature.
For maximum overall bandwidth Internet-to-network client, use routers that support 1Gbps WAN-to-LAN & LAN-to-WAN interfaces. There are not many on the market currently that supports this. Also these routers should provide Gigabit Ethernet on both the WAN & LAN sides.
To get an idea of what's available, please check out the SmallNetBuilder's to compare routers.

  • Help setting up small home network with PC and an imac!!!?

I have an imac in my room, and my mother has a JP PC in her room across the house. We have a router and modem on her computer(I connect to the internet through the router signal)
I just recently bought a new printer. It is a wifi printer. I was told by a friend that I need to setup a small netowrk so all the computers/printers in the house can talk to one another. Because right now my printer is installed and connected to the router signal (but my computer does not reconize it to print....)
I started a small network on my moms PC...but when I can't make a network CD like it tells me to because my computer is a Mac....how do I continue to setup this network? Can I set it up first on my mac as well???PLEASE HELP! I want to use my printer!

You can just connect the WRT54G wireless router’s LAN port to BEFSR41 router’s LAN port by using a network cable as specified in this configuring wireless router as access point article, after that can connect other computers to that wireless router with or without cable. Finally do more test to check the performance. Hope it helps.

  • Extending wi-fi network with apple and non-apple routers

I am trying (remotely) to hep my family set up their LAN network so that all of their devices are on the same modem instead of on two modems.  The new modem that Comcast provided them is an Arris TG862 (combo modem/router) and they already have an Airport Extreme Time Capsule and an Airport Express.  They also have an iMac and 2 ipads that need to connect wirelessly, and the network needs to be extended way to the other side of the house.  There are two configurations that I think will work:  can someone confirm for me that both of these would work?  And am I right in thinking that the airport express cannot extend the network wirelessly if the airport extreme is not the primary base station?  Thanks!
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/8glryd7x2utkwu2/Sho%27s%20Modem%20Setup%20Guide.pdf

If the TG862 and the Airport Extreme have to be located next to each other, should I turn off the TG862's wireless network?
If they are going to be near each other, than yes, you will want to disable the Arris' wireless radio.
And how do I do that?
Off-hand I wouldn't know. However, you should be able to download a copy of the user's guide for this device. Most likely it will have a web-based administrator interface. Within this interface you should find options to configure its wireless radio.
