Modem Reboots Randomly

My modem reboots randomly. I recently had the Technicolor tc8305c and switched it out for an Arris TG862G because of problems I've read on the Technicolor rebooting randomly. My connection was fine for a day or two after receiving the Arris, but sadly I'm having the same problem.. It's rebooted 4 or 5 times in the past hour.

Please see Connection Troubleshooting Tips. If you want to troubleshoot this yourself and still need help, please provide Information Requested for Connection-Related Posts.
If you are using Wifi it's best to switch to an Ethernet connection if possible while checking the reliability of your connection to Comcast.
If you'd rather have them do the troubleshooting call them at the phone number on your bill or 1-800-Comcast and have them send a tech out to identify the cause and correct it.
If the tech finds bad coax, splitters, amplifiers, or connections in your home (even if Comcast originally supplied them) you'll probably have to pay for the visit unless you have their Service Protection Plan (http://www.xfinity.com/spp/, about $5/mo). If the trouble is due to a faulty Comcast modem, eMTA, gateway device, or anything outside your home, you shouldn't be charged.

  • Multiple Gateway/Modem Reboots All Day Long

The gateway/modem is dropping phone calls and internet connection anywhere from 10-30 times a day.  The modem is completely rebooting during these issues (meaning it's not just loss of signal ---the entire reboot/restart process happens).
It's totally at random.  We can go up to six or seven hours with no interruptions OR we can get 15 reboots over one hour.  It's at any time of day or night.  Totally intermittent.
That means --- no help.  No techs on the phone or at the house will escalate the problem because they aren't experiencing the issue for themselves.  The techs who HAVE seen the issue replace the modem to fix it because of some reason and then leave...and the issue happens 30 minutes later.
At this point, we have had 5 techs out and 1 supervisor.
The signal is wonderful (and indeed when the modem isn't resetting, we get excellent speed and connection).  The television and on-demand do not go out.  This loss of connection and reset only affects the internet and phone as far as we can tell.
The wiring in the house is now new.  There is 1 splitter which is now also new.  It's also been bypassed to see if the issue fixes, and it does not.  Random things in the box on the house have all been replaced.  The line from the pole to our house is new.  Meaning ---all these techs and supervisor have "verified" there is no issue from the pole to our modem.
I'm not sure why a line tech can't be sent out if it's "obviously" (their words) not an issue from the pole to our modem.  It doesn't leave a lot of options other than the line to our pole unless I'm missing something.
Then again, today's tech showed me on his tablet some page that showed all the reboots from our modem just for today.  So, how's it working if he could see it's obviously not?
Two modem replacements, rate codes fixed, blah blah blah.
Just hand them an incredibly stupid amount of money for no service or fixes I guess?  I mean, I'm dealing with this because I WANT comcast.  I don't want dish or direct.  Google Fiber is being installed in my city, and I'd switch for that.....but I'm the only one fighting to keep comcast.  I love Comcast, but I'm not going to pay for service I'm not getting.  The $40 refund for the last 3 weeks isn't going to cut it when it's STILL not fixed.
The last tech left and 5 minutes later...internet is down and phone is out...and I'm waiting on the reboot.  He switched to a different port on the pole and said he hoped it fixed it because he saw no issues.
So basically...this must be the service available to my house if I want comcast.
Nobody will even look at the error logs on the modem.  One guy who said nothing was wrong with my signal or service said "yeah we see that before we even get to your house" and wouldn't look.  If he saw it, how is there nothing wrong?

So as you can see, they tell me everything is fine...but if they'd take 3 seconds to look at this, maybe it would help.  If they really "already look at that before" they come into the house, then why keep telling me there is nothing wrong?
I know I'm not getting connection.  I'm not technologically stupid (I'm no expert, but I know when my service stops working how it's worked for years.  I can see big flashing lights as the modem reboots.)
I'm seriously at a loss at what I need to say to these people that I haven't already.  I know it's hot outside, but dang.  It's got to be costing them way more money to have tech after tech sit in my driveway for 20 minutes and then come tell me the service is fine as far as they can see.
In all honesty, I know the techs do what they can.  They've all been polite, and I know the intermittent issue makes it ridiculously hard to figure out.  The thing is, I've been dealing with this issue for way longer than I should be ---while paying a full bill with another due soon.  I'm not asking too much.  I just want service fixed so I can keep giving them my money.  I just need to know what I can tell them other than "just disconnect my service then."
The other thing that points to line issues is that a house on the line before us was torn down.  They jerked some lines off the pole, and they loosened up the comcast line.  The first tech fixed this, but said it might need to be fixed by line techs if service went in/out during wind or rain.  The other techs ignored me, but the tech before today went up and took down the extra wires and all that.  He said he saw no actual issues there other than the amp being "about 20 years old" and some type of connection on the cable about a foot down the line that is no longer used by Comcast.  He said the amp was really old but functional.  Again, none of them want to listen to the glaringly obvious signs that the line techs need to come out and replace some things to fix this.  There is only 1 other house after me on this connection...so if here are issues, there isn't enough crying to comcast to fix it like they would if it affected 20 houses in an area.

Thanks again, EG.  From the email, I was able to get escalated yesterday.  I was put in contact with a supervisor on 1-800-COMCAST's wireless gateway department. He actually took a few minutes to listen to the error logs I had through all the modems over the last month (over 25 total pages).  He went in and found the dhcp reset error was a common issue with the gateway we had. The gateway is what a lot of people have, and he said it was close to being on the "end-of-life" list soon. So the guys working on our account went ahead and come today and double checked some things. He replaced a switch outside just in case, but he also installed a new wireless gateway that's one of the newer ones they are installing. It's an XB3 gateway. The guys on the phone were great, and today's tech was amazing!  He stayed until the issue was FIXED.  Thank you! The corporate service rep also called back to make sure everything was good, and she is reviewing the account to adjust charges.  The supervisor is also going to monitor the line for 24-48 hours to check for any other issues. The bottom line is that I've tried for 2 ½ weeks to get a tech to actually look at the log, and that was the key to fixing the issue.  So, just updating for the next person who sees the errors I originally posted!  Make them listen to ya!

  • Modem reboots/resets itself after 5-10 min movie stream

I have an Apple TV 2 and a 2Wire 2701HG-T Gateway. The problem is like this:
    1. I start to stream an HD movie (2 to 4 GBs) from my PC (Windows 7) to ATV2
    2. After 5-10 min my router/modem reboots itself and all devices lose connection to internet
    3. When my router/modem is back up (after 2-3 min) all devices regain connection to internet
    4. I start the movie where I left it and it happens again after a random amount of time. (Sometimes it doesn't happen again and I can finish watching my movie)
    Importat notes:
    * My router/modem ONLY does this when I stream large HD movies from my PC, if my ATV2 is off and I'm downloading stuff, browsing, etc. It works like a charm, this just happens ONLY when I use my ATV2.
    * I don't lose connection with iTunes (Home Sharing). My problem completly shuts down my whole network and as soon as it is back up ATV2 finds iTunes with no problem and I can resume my movie. So it's not a Home Sharing/iTunes issue.
So that's it, any ideas what the problem might be?

Our Cisco Linksys WRT610N did this too. Every few days it would crash and reboot itself while we were watching Netflix on the AppleTV. I bought an AirPort Extreme a few days ago and it hasn't happened again yet. Too soon to know for sure but my hunch is it isn't going to crash like the Linksys did.
Sorry I don't have a solution for you. I think it boils down to most consumer routers being junk.

  • Multiple Modem Reboots through out the day.

Over the course of the last several weeks, I have been experienceing alot of modem resets.  I believe it all started when I had a Tech come by and we moved the modem and re-wired some of the old cableing, including removeing an old booster and installing a no lost booster. At first I though it was my router, then my modem.  Bought a SB6141 modem and once I was able to look at the logs, then I started to notice a pattern.  Please note that I was getting same results with a Comcast supplied modem, just could not see the logs. Here is a snippet from my log: Jul 08 2015 10:51:293-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:51:285-WarningZ00.0MIMO Event MIMO: Stored MIMO=-1 post cfg file MIMO=-1;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jan 01 1970 00:00:213-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jan 01 1970 00:00:156-NoticeN/ACable Modem Reboot due to T4 timeout ;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:353-CriticalR06.0Unicast Maintenance Ranging attempted - No response - Retries exhausted;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:353-CriticalR03.0Ranging Request Retries exhausted;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:343-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:263-CriticalR06.0Unicast Maintenance Ranging attempted - No response - Retries exhausted;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:263-CriticalR03.0Ranging Request Retries exhausted;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:263-CriticalR06.0Unicast Maintenance Ranging attempted - No response - Retries exhausted;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jul 08 2015 10:50:263-CriticalR03.0Ranging Request Retries exhausted;CM-MAC=78:96:84:f9:89:7e;CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:23:d4:51;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;  From my research, the modem will reboot after seven critical errors.  The reboots are noted by the date of Jan 01, 1970. This will happen 3-7 times a day.  Sadly, the log does not display a whole day, only the last 15 messages, and you cannot export to excel file.  When it does reboot, it takes about 2 mins to regain connection. Here is some other information from the modem screen: Downstream Bonding Channel ValueChannel ID1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Frequency657000000 Hz 663000000 Hz 669000000 Hz 675000000 Hz 681000000 Hz 687000000 Hz 693000000 Hz 699000000 Hz Signal to Noise Ratio37 dB 38 dB 38 dB 37 dB 38 dB 38 dB 38 dB 38 dB Downstream ModulationQAM256 QAM256 QAM256 QAM256 QAM256 QAM256 QAM256 QAM256 Power Level The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. They are not. The stats as read at the modem level at that moment in time were good but there are three additional signal stats which can't be read by the modem. They can only be read from their end by them polling the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) at the local headend facility.
They are the 'Upstream Receive Power Level', the 'uSNR' (upstream Signal To Noise Ratio), and the "ICFR" (In Channel Frequency Response). These are as equally important in diagnosing connectivity issues as are the modem's stats.
You can call in and ask what these figures are. The Upstream Receive Power Level should fall within the range of -2dB to +2dB with 0dB being in the middle and perfect.
The Upstream SNR should be least 31dB, and the higher it is the better.
The ICFR should be no higher than 2 dB.
You could have an intermittent noise ingress issue in only the upstream channel(s) / return path only somewhere.
They will be able to see whether or not everything is in the green zone and also see a history plot for the modem.

  • OS X 10.9.2 on Mac Mini 2012 reboots randomly

Hi everybody, I have a Mac Mini 2012 2.3ghz model. I bought with Mountain Lion and everything was very very good. I updated to Mavericks from ML and, a little bit slow, but, I knew it, I needed update since zero. So, I did it, and, since that day, I have a lot of reboots randomly. One day, I had as 4 or 5 reboots in 2 or 3 hours. I mean, ***!!!. Sometimes that passed when I close Safari with a lot of tabs. Sometimes when I eject an USB or HDD. It's so randomly.
I've done repair permissions and pass it Ccleaner. The Mac is still rebooting. I have the last report. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much!.

  • Frequent internet drops (T4 modem reboots, upstream issues)

We've been with Comast for about a year and a half -- from day one we've had lots of problems staying connected to the internet. We've tried a number of solutions to no avail. (replacing router, removing splitter, removing unnecessary cable splices, etc.)  After posting logs on some other forums, it seems we are experiencing some sort of upstream connectivity issue. Today the internet dropped about 10x in a span of 2-3 hours -- I looked at the modem status during this time and EVERY time the problem was the same -- T3 and T4 modem reboot errors and an inability to connect to upstream channels 46 and 47. It was these same two upstream channels EVERY time, which seemed odd. Here are a few snapshots of the logs and whatnot: Modem error log:http://tinypic.com/r/2ytxso5/8 Upstream channels 46 & 47 during T4 drops:http://tinypic.com/r/2d829f9/8 Overall modem signals (when modem is successfully connected):http://tinypic.com/r/2efsup5/8 From what I can tell, the signal strength is excellent. I'm guessing Comcast's first suggestion will be to "replace the modem." Keep in mind this has happened from day one when our modem was brand new -- as such, I really think there is something wrong with the actual physical line or something. From a frequency standpoint, this happens daily anywhere from every 10 minutes to every few hours (making things like online gaming literally impossible to do). At this point I think the only course of action is to have a tech come out and investigate this in-person. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

We had the same problem, up until about two weeks ago.  Our internet would keep dropping and the modem would re-cycle.  I do web design and run an eBay store, so this was incredibly frustrating.  It started only happening a few times here and there, but eventually it got to where it was down/re-cycling more often than not...at least it seemed to be. Comcast was good about sending a tech out right away to see what the problem was.  It was obvious it wasn't something that could be diagnosed and fixed over the phone support line. The technician came out and identified the same problem you are describing. Upstream connectivity issues. I don't remember all of the explanation, but we were unable to maintain a constant upstream connection.  After a few minutes of checking out our wiring, he discovered the problem.  During one of the last visits from a Comcast technician (we've had several problems over the years) they installed an 8-port splitter block to handle all of the cable outlets in our house. This was our problem.  The 8-way splitter caused the upstream signal to degrade and be unable to maintain the connection.  He took out the splitter block and replaced it with some sort of powered splitter (it looked expensive, but they didn't charge us for it).  This took care of the problem immediately and we haven't had any problems for the last couple of weeks. Our speeds also increased dramatically. If you have any splitters (especially more than say three or four ports) this could be your problem. 8-way's are definite no-nos.   At any rate, I would definitely have them come out and check out your problem.  It is more than likely a wiring issue.  I know how frustrating it is to experience the issues you are having.  The technician used his phone to somehow track down the problem.  The guy was really knowledgeable and explained things to me really well...I'm just too old to remember everything he said.  He was in and out in all of fifteen minutes.  At the end of everything, there was no charge for anything and our service has been wonderful ever since.

I stand corrected. The code is still not deferred. I am still curios to find out why. The reason i am asking that is most likely you are hitting a bug which. The bug fix will be on different code and if you are upgrading then might as well upgrade to a more recent code train.

  • RV042 rebooting randomly

I installed an RV042 on my network two months ago. It's been working fine until yesterday. It's configured Dual WAN, connected to Comcast cable and AT&T DSL with load balancing turned on. Like I said, until yesterday - everything has been perfect.
Today, the router has started rebooting randomly. All the lights except for Power and Diag go out, and the router resets. The network, of course, has crashed by this point.
In the system log, there is no error message. Just suddenly "System is up!" followed by the cable dhcp connection and the pppoe connect spam. Odd thing is, the DATE is wrong at that point. It shows Dec 31 2002 19:00 as the timestamp, every time it crashes.
This is a relatively new router, it's sitting out on a desk with lots of air space all around it, and it doesn't feel hot to the touch at all. It's plugged in to a battery backup. The router has the latest firmware.
What should I do now? This is ugly, when it happens. Overnight last night, it rebooted four times.

  • My iPod Touch 5g reboots randomly, help?

Sometimes my iPod Touch reboots randomly when I am using it. This mostly happens when it's below 50% battery. I got it for Christmas and it's still brand new. No fall or water damage, why does this happen? I'm on iOS 6.0.1 but I'll update today

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. If your iPod is defective and not abused Apple will replace it on the spot.

  • BlackBerry Curve 9350 rebooting randomly

We have several BB Curve 9350, OS 7.1 that keep rebooting randomly. They are under Sprint.
They use a custom application that requires the user to login, and beacuse of the rebooting they have to login multiple times and restart their work as many times.
Please, is there a known problem with this device?
Is there a way I can determine if the application is causing the rebooting?

    Hello Jltssysb,
I would suggest to do a clean reload of the BlackBerry® device software as shown here: http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320, please test before restoring any data to the device.
If this resolves the issue do a selective restore of essential data (Address Book, Calendar, Task, Memos, BBM contacts etc.)
How to use BlackBerry® Desktop Software to restore data to a BlackBerry® smartphone from a backup file

If the issue still persists after the reload, further investigation might be required. To help further diagnose the cause, contact your wireless service provider or BlackBerry® Technical Support Services for further review and support.
    Thank you

  • E50 Rebooting randomly

    Hi All
I have a Nokia E50 which reboots randomly after a upgraded to the V06.41.3.0 software, has anybody else seen this problem and what to do about it?
i seem a bit like it is mostly rebooting when the battery is showing only two "lines"! However i have not tested this to an extend that i can be sure that it is related

  • IOS7 Rebooting Randomly

Anyone else having issues with iOS7 rebooting randomly? I loaded yesterday (9/18), other than downloading/install issues that have been reported, have been fairly satisfied, however, today I have noticed quite a bit of random rebooting while it sits on my desk in front of me. If this happens while I am taking a call, I will be quite annoyed! AT&T iPhone 5 32GB iOS 7.0 (11A465)
