Modernizing Solaris 6 to 8 maybe 10

Hi
We have a very old Sun Enterprise E5500 running Solaris 5.6. This server serves up Oracle 7.3.4.0.1 with distributed parallel query and Spartial options PL/SQL Release 2.3.4.0.0 and Cobol and is used for distribution services.
I'm looking for options to modernize this environment and are asking for any input from Oracle Support or user forums for any reasonable suggetions.
Some options that I was thinking are building a branded zone on our M3000 running Solaris 10 update 10 but I don't think Solaris 6 can be branded like Solaris 8 or 9. Furthermore Solaris 6 is a 32 bit OS I believe and so would be the applications.
Second, I am wondering if I can simply shutdown the databases, backup and restore to a fresh non-global Solaris 10 zone and tweak user accounts and add printers and test if ths would work.
Lastly, I am considering upgrading the base OS up to Solaris 8 but I do not know if this is possible either.
Can  anyone advise if there would be any other venues that I can approach in modernizing our environment?
Please advise
Jeff

Upgrading to a more up-to-date version of Solaris is possible. Your machine supports Solaris till the version 10.
Using a brand zone (Solaris 8 or 10 only) is possible but the problem is the same as to migrate to Solaris 10 directly : is your software environment able to run with a different version of Solaris and/or with a more recent version of the applications ? This is the main problem. Moving the database is not the only point to check, you should also do the same with the codes you used in your database and scripts. This is more complex that just to do a export and import operation.
You should also check if the target software and OS are still supported/available and for how many time.
I suggest you to check with the application forums first if this is possible. You can then check at least the OS side.

  • Dual boot (x86) Solaris 9 with Win Xp/ NT

    Hello!
    I wanted to have Solaris as well as any other OS. The problem is that according to the mutliboot guide provided by SUN, first I install Win Xp, and then Solaris. But during the installation, Solaris demands the entire disk to be used, while I go for the "default disk layout". I can't figure out how to specify a particular amount of disk space for solaris through FDISK. Maybe, i don;t know the layout to be followed. This is because if I make a solaris partition, it does not install on it....

    Well I run WindowsXP and Solaris on the same box.
    Cant understand whats the problem with it, so let me just describe the way I did it. (btw installation guid was not so helpful)
    So at the point when you have to choose HD to install at, I think question before it was what sort of installation type you want (Default or Custom) Default will just use hole HD, while Custom will ask extra questions, conserning HD, partitions and so on. Just choose the right one, make sure that you devide space for Solaris in a way you need it rather then what just stands there (like more space for OS rather then private space and so on..)
    Then finish install and thats it.
    Hope it will help.

  • Bug 5088398 for JDK 1.5 in SOLARIS SPARC 10

    The above bug relates to a java.lang.instrument TCK test deadlock (test11). The bug was solved about a month ago (March, 2008).
    My question is when it is going to be integrated in solaris 10 patches or maybe there is already a patch for it.
    Thank you
    Simcha

    This is not the correct place to ask that kind of question, we don't know.
    You better contact Sun directly.

  • Available design options for a cluster hosting many different virtualized Solaris versions

    Good day, everyone, and thanks first off for reading my question.
    So, I have been Googling and reading oracle documentation for the past couple weeks, and I am just getting more and more confused as to what I need to do, and I would really appreciate some guidance or at least pointing me to what specifically I should be reading.
    Situation:  We have several 10+ year old Solaris systems, running either Solaris 8 or 10, that hold several mission-critical systems for business operation.  These systems are rapidly dying and need to be migrated to a newer system.  They are old systems that require very few resources to run, but are critical nonetheless.
    So far: We have purchased four T5220 SPARC servers, with 8 cores and 64GB of RAM each.  They have arrived, and I am ready to start building the "solution".
    The intent: To be able to take system images of these old systems, virtualize them, and have them run on some type of high-availability cluster solution that will keep them operational, even if one (or possibly two) of the four physical T5220 servers failed.
    Question: How should I do this?  It seemed like a simple idea to start out with.  My initial thoughts were to install Solaris 11 on each of the four servers, cluster them together with Oracle cluster, run a Hypervisor of some type as a cluster application (Oracle VM?) on top of the physical cluster, and then drop all of the virtual machines on top of that hypervisor.  That way, the virtual machines should run uninterrupted if a cluster node fails.
    Is this feasible? Possible?  What is the right terminology here so I know what to be researching?  I didn't think this would be so hard, but I can't even find a good white paper/document to read - they all seem to be focused to something other than what I'm looking for.
    Any suggestions for how I should accomplish this or where I can go to find the information I'm looking for?
    Thanks in advance for all your help.
    -Lyxix

    Thanks Walter, that did help a lot!  Looking into it a bit more, this is what it looks like I need to learn about and implement. How does this sound for an extremely broad overview:
    Step 1) Cluster the 4 physical servers together (figure out what type of cluster I need, and use Oracle Cluster 4.x on top of Solaris 11.1 or maybe 11.2 beta?)
    Step 2) Create Zoneclusters, probably one for each type of OS I need to run (a Sol 8 ZC, and a Sol 10 ZC, and then possibly a Sol 11 ZC to try to migrate the systems up if possible...)
    Step 3) Create Logical Domains (LDOMs) for each of my old systems, and put them on the zone clusters, using Oracle VM Server.
    In this setup, if a node fails, the virtual system will go down, but I should be able to configure it to start up another node automatically with minimal downtime for the virtual systems?
    I realize "I should be" is reaching, since I have virtually zilch cluster experience and limited Solaris experience, but let's rephrase that to "it's possible to". I realize I have a lot of work ahead of me, but thankfully I have no strict time limits to get this implemented and can work one step at a time.
    Thanks so much for your help - does this all sound correct so far?

  • IMac force select "Display Audio" when headphone jack is in use

    I have a new 2012 iMac and Thunderbolt Display.  I use the Display Audio from time to time, but also use a set of high quality speakers plugged in to the headphone jack.
    Some applications, like Chrome (Google Hangout, Gmail phone calls) will default to using the Display Audio as the speaker.  If I have the headphone jack in use (using the desk speakers), then the Audio System Preferences will NOT let me select the "Display Audio" device.  It will immediately highlight "Headphone" again.  The problem is if I want to change the "Display Audio" volume, I have to remove the cable from the headphone port, then change the audio, then plug it back in the headphone port.
    It's quite annoying.
    Is there any way to change this?
    As a second request, is there an app that allows you to select which audio device applications will use?  Like, if I wanted to change Chrome from using the Display Audio (not sure why thats the default anyway), or another application to only use the headphone port...

    Hi,
    The problem with the selection of the headphone port is something I reported to Apple back in October 2012.  After some time, the reply came back that this was intended behaviour, and my bug report was subsequently marked as, "behaves correctly"!  I agree with you that this is a pain in the backside and certainly appears to be bug-like behaviour.  If you can take the time, I'd ask you to file your own bug report on this matter here.  Perhaps it'll help cause a re-think.  You should be able to log in with your Apple ID.
    As for your second question: many people are asking this now.  Rogue Amoeba made such a thing years ago, but it doesn't work on modern, Intel-based Macs.  Maybe they'd consider updating it if enough people asked?
    For Chrome, you can use ChromeLauncherWithExtraAudio - I've tried it and it works fine, though once you've changed the audio output on launch you have to quit and re-launch to change it again.  If you want to choose where to send audio from movies, radio and so forth you could start using VLC, which completely ignores the system audio settings, and lets you choose from any connected audio outputs.

    "comp1.C", line 7: Error: complex is not defined.
    2 Error(s) detected.
    where am i wrong?
    I'm using Sun Studion with latest patches, on Solaris 10 (sparc and amd64!)
    thanks in advance for help,
    gerard

    First of all, there is no need to specify complier installation directory in -I and/or -L options; compilers knows where to look for its own libraries and includes. In fact, -I/opt/SUNWspro/include -L/opt/SUNWspro/libwill interfere with compiler's algorithms of libraries/includes lookup and cause unwanted side effects.
    Replace those with
    -library=complexas CC(1) suggests. libm will be linked automatically.
    Now, to the difference between compat=4 (-compat) and compat=5 (no -compat option). compat=4 implies very old, pre-standard C++ syntax and semantics. Is there a solid reason for using it, especially in modern Solaris 10 environment? Also, as the warning suggests, compat=4 is not supported with 64-bit sparc (-xarch=v9).
    I'm not sure why your code does not compile in -m64 (with proper compiler options), but I think I know the right way to arrange things:
    1. Use C++ includes instead of C-style includes:
    #include <complex>2. Since C++-style headers inject names into std namespace, you'll have to write std::complex; also, complex is a template class, so you'll need to write std::template<float>, for example, or provide typedefs.
    3. Do not use -compat; in fact, it is better to switch to STLport library (-library=stlport4) than continue using outdated (but provided for backward compatibility libCstd). In short, add this to compilation line:
    -library=stlport4To summarize: here's the code that works and correct compiler parameters
    $ cat test.cc
    #include <complex>
    int main()
            typedef std::complex<float> complex;
            complex z(1,2), zz(3, 4);
            complex zzz = z + zz;
    $ CC  -m64 -library=stlport4 -library=complex test.cc

  • How to speed up booting process

    I was lucky the way I could try out different ways of instaling Solaris 10 together with XP Pro. However same thing always happend. I do not know why but Solaris booting manager is slow in my opinion. I can't find out how to speed up this process. Can somebody give some advice???

    Hey, I am new to solaris, but I think maybe you should try installing solaris alone, with out XP Pro on the machine at all. I also see what you mean about the long system loading. Think of it this way, Unix and Windows are different, Unix has a more stability, and better config options than windows, so load time is a small price to pay. I would say My node take about 3 minutes to login from the time i turn the power on. Windows booted the same computer in 1 minute 40 seconds. BUT, the windows machine started to lagg after a week or so, I've been able to run my solaris for 3 weeks with out shutdown. now there is 1 more problem, how am i going to pay my electricity bill?

  • Converting URL to filename

    Hi all. I have the following piece of code:
    String sFilename = "";
    URL u = ClassLoader.getSystemResource("duncan.txt");
    if (u != null)
      sFilename = new File(u.getFile()).getPath();
    }The intention is that it finds this file, and the gets the filename, which is subsequently passed into a native function.
    In Windows this works fine, for example after the code is run, sFilename has the value 'C:\test\duncan.txt' which is great and exactly what I want. However, on Unix sFilename has the value '/FILE0/+/qaworld.ini' which is of no use to me (I was expecting something like /home/test/duncan.txt). What do I have to do to get the filename in the correct format?? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers,
    dUNC

    You got it to work?? Hmmm...wouldn't work for me on Solaris at all. Maybe I'm doing something else wrong. Or maybe it's a JDK issue? Interesting...
    I can't use your alternative method as I want the file to be located somewhere on the CLASSPATH and then for the code to find the location. Your code would mean that the file had to be in the same location as the program, which it won't be.
    Thanks for your help,

  • SunPCi Wishlist

    (just dreaming...)
    Here's what I want:
    (I know, "people in hell want ice water" :-) )
    - Solaris x86 support for my SunPCi IIIpro card. I want to run both Solaris SPARC and
    Solaris x86 on my Sun SPARC workstation;
    - SunPCi 3.2x for x86 Solaris. I want to run Solaris x86 AND Windows (don't really
    want to run winduhs, but I have to) AND Linux on a Sun Ultra20 or Ultra40
    workstation;
    - MAC OS X support in SunPCi 3.2.x SPARC and x86. I want (*want*) to run MAC OS X
    on a SunPCi IIIPro card in either a SPARC or x86 Solaris workstation;
    - SunPCi 3.2.x for MAC OS X. I want to stick my SunPCi IIIpro card in my MAC PRO
    workstation and run Solaris x86 on it (maybe Linux or winduhs, too).
    Any of these solutions would be so bitchin'!
    Why not do all of this with some sort of emulation/virtualization technology? The
    SunPCi IIIpro card already exists, the technology is mature, and it works great in
    SPARCs. Doesn't that get us, what, 80% of the way there? We just need drivers, right?
    SunPCi has to be one of the best interoperability products ever made! It doesn't seem
    like it would take much to add a whole bunch of cross-platform versatility to it.
    Have any of these interoperability solutions been considered at Sun?
    (No responses really expected, just wondering...and hoping they'll magically appear in
    the SunPCi feature list some day.)
    Thanks!

  • Kernel Page Faults

    I am analyzing performance on a mutlithreaded application using Forte Sampler/Analyzer. The Analyzer is reporting a 51.9% Kernel Page Fault Rate in the Execution Statistics and the Overview. There are no minor or major pager faults reported, and there is plenty of physical memory (6 gig). My question - could this be considered "normal" behavior? Or is there a way to decrease the kernel page fault rate?
    The application is being tested under fairly high input rates (approx 5000 msgs/sec).
    Thanks.

    IMHO, those kernel page faults have to do with theI/O
    - in modern Solaris I/O is done uniformly viamemory
    mapping, so you might stop worry about those page
    faults - they are just in place...Is this your opinion, or is it fact?Not seeing the box it's kinda hard to tell, but in general Solaris does [almost] all I/O through memory mapping - yeap, THIS is the fact.

  • [SOLVED]LXQT Desktop Environment, few questions.

    Welcome everyone. I know it is maybe a little bit to soon but i've got few questions.
    I'm searching for modern and good looking desktop necessairly lightweight and smooth. There is of course enlightenment (trying, didn't like this' strange look with very strange panel), Mate (based on GTK2 so no), Hawaii (i've got no idea how to install it, something is not installing properly in yaourt but this would be the best choice because of qt5), Pantheon (didn't try that but i don't think so this is lightweight) and LXQT which is OK but i've got few question.
    First of all, this will be added to official arch repo or users will be forced to use not comfortable yaourt install?
    Is this environment will be ported to qt5?
    Another question not related with LXQT is this,  XFCE look like desktop from 90's (don't understand me wrong) it's great enviroment but this modern look is missing.
    Maybe it is not the best place to ask about all these things but maybe you know more than i do.

    It's not even released yet, so you're a bit premature. My guess would be that it will turn up in community at some stage after iits release, just as lxde did.

    Ask the developers.

    Not a question.

  • Modern AMP for Solaris 10

    Hi All
    I'm upgrading a server that has a very old MediaWiki intranet service and I figured I would bring it up to date while migrating.
    Sadly this server uses the old Glassfish Webstack 1.5 for it's AMP stack, which of course is now dead and doesn't provide the minimum requirements for LTS supported MediaWiki versions.
    Researching for a replacement I found Apache Friends' https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html XAMPP, which looks like it might do the job, but it seems it's only an old version available from the SourceForge site (in particular I think it has the HeartBleed vulnerability still in it).  I guess they have quietly dropped development for Solaris 10 since it's not prominent on their main page any longer.
    All the articles on the net I find on the topic are also quite old and I'm afraid if I try and install individual packages using their instruction they just won't work work together.  Even MediaWiki's pages are outdated on the topic.  I'd rather spend my time moving to Solaris 11 (but not yet!).
    So does anyone know of an Apache/MySQL/PHP stack for Solaris 10 that is still updated or reasonably current?

    Don't go back any farther though.
    I've heard reports that prior to Solaris 9, the included in.tftpd lacks certain extensions that are required for PXEGRUB in Solaris 10 to work properly.

    There is a known issue with the people app but none for the others .  You may want to uninstall the mail calender, people apps using powershell as they did in 41 and then re-install them.You may want to run a system file check to verify the state of
