Modifying DVD/BD Menus w/ Motion & Audio

PrE ships with many Menus for use in DVD’s. Some have Video Motion Backgrounds, and some even come with Audio. In most, one can add their own Audio, but with those, which contain both already, the Duration is set. Users often want to change that Duration. PrE has a Duration limit of 30;00 as the max, so one cannot exceed that. Also, the DVD-specs take Video ahead of Audio, and any Audio must be exactly the Duration of any Video, or ever so slightly shorter.
This step-by-step will allow for one to extend the built-in Duration to accommodate longer Audio of the user’s choice. Note: as the Menus are set to Loop, the choice, or construction of the Audio can be important for it to sound good with the Menu. I recommend an Audio piece with both a Fade-in and Fade-out, to keep all sounding smooth.
As much of the Menu Template’s visuals will be provided by that Motion Background AV file, we’ll plan on keeping that, but just modifying it a bit back in PrE.
First, choose an Audio piece that is no more than 30;00, or that you can alter in either PrE, Audition, Audacity, or other audio-editing program. Add a Fade-in and a Fade-out to it. Note the exact Duration. Save_As, or Export, as an Audio-only file. I would choose PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and not some compressed format, like MP3. WAV is as good as it gets.
In a new PrE Project, Import the Menu’s Motion MPEG (or other format) and use TimeStretch to increase its Duration to match the Duration of your Audio Asset, or make it one Frame longer, but remember that it must be < 30;00. Export/Share this new, “stretched” Video-only Asset. One could choose DV-AVI, or DV MPEG. Remember - no Audio, and Multiplexing set to None. You want a Video-only file. I would NOT overwrite the original Video file, but give it a unique name, even if you just add a “1" to the file name.
Go to PrE’s Create Menus Panel, and choose the new, stretched AV file, and the Duration of the original AV file will change to match that of the new one. In that Panel, now link to the new Audio-only file. Note: this will be “adding” an Audio Asset, if you are working with a Menu Set that does not contain Audio already (some have Audio, and some do not).
Now, Preview your Menu, and listen for the Audio. It should Fade-in and then Fade-out immediately before the Menu Loops.
With PrE’s Menu Sets, you’ll notice that there will be a Main Menu and a Scene Selection Menu. Most of these Assets, that have Motion Backgrounds, will have the same Motion Background Asset for both the Main and the Scene Selection Menus. Do not forget to repeat the above steps for the Scene Selection Menus too. You can use the same exact Assets - the ones that you have modified, or created. One important note here: Menu Audio cannot span Menus. That is against the DVD-specs. The trick is to make the user think that the music has spanned them, when it has not. For this “illusion,” I use music pieces, that have both a Fade-in and Fade-out, and repetitive passages, so that when the user goes to the Scene Selection Menu, it appears that the music continues. If you have a music piece, with vocals, it gets very difficult to make it seem that the music spans, especially as you have no idea when the user will go to the Scene Selection Menu - you can never match the lyrics up, so do not even try - you do not know where the user will push the Button. For this, I would have the vocals ONLY for the Main Menu, and then use only an instrumental passage from the same song, if one exists, or choose another piece of music, that is very similar in style, tone and rhythm, so that the two seem to flow. This will mean a second, and different piece for the Scene Selection Menu.
Things to remember:
1.) the Duration of the Audio, or Video for a Motion Menu cannot exceed 30;00
2.) the Duration of the Audio cannot exceed that of the Video by even one Audio Unit
3.) Audio cannot span multiple Menus, but one can create the illusion that it does with careful selection, and the use of Fade-ins and Fade-outs.*
4.) when using Time Stretch to increase the Duration of the original Menu’s Motion Background file, the motion will slow down a bit, but this should not affect the overall look. The user will not have seen the original version, so will have no frame of reference. Stars might twinkle more slowly, or neon might flash more slowly, but how will they know that they ARE slower?
5.) for Audio Assets, use PCM/WAV (Uncompressed) and not any compressed formats, especially with any flavor of MPEG CODEC, like MP3.
6.) remember to use elemental streams only, i.e. Video-only for the video portion, and Audio-only for the audio - no Multiplexing.
* in my SmartSound library, I have chosen about a dozen scores that can have Fade-in/Fade-outs and have repetitive passages within a 30;00 Duration. I use these often, and SmartSound allows for about 5-6 variations on each of these. Choose wisely, and listen closely, as you will want to create that “illusion” that the music DOES span the Menus, when it really cannot.

I'm assuming that you're trying to add audio to a still menu.
Two questions:  1) Where do you get the menu (Adobe Encore library, created one in Photoshop, etc).
2) where did you obtain the audio and what is the format (MPEG, WAV, PCM, etc?)
Try the following first.
1) Create a new project. Use a standard still menu from the library
2) Add an audio track.
3) Preview the project.
If it works, you can trouble shoot it from there

  • How do I make interactive DVD/Blu-Ray menus with motion?

So, adobe doesn't support Encore anymore which means I can't use dynamic link to AE to create interactive DVD/Blu-Ray menus with motion.... or can I? Is there something I'm doing wrong? While in Encore, I go to dynamic link and boom, dynamic link to AE is not highlighted. If I can't make an interactive menu with motion using adobe, then what can I use? This is causing a major problem for me and my clients. (if i over looked the answer to this in another post, my apologies)

You can use the "Create After Effects Composition." This prompts you to create an independent version of the Encore PSD menu file, and opens the layered file in AE CC and creates a new composition with appropriate settings. AE no longer has mpeg export, so you export from AE to AME.
There were some workflow options that I did not play with much, but they were never what I saw as the basics for using AE to create the motion background.

  • DVD Studio Pro and Motion won't work

I posted this in the Tiger forum and didn't get a solution so I'm trying here.
After installing Tiger DVD Studio Pro and Motion quit working.
Both applications open (in the menu bar at least), but neither one will open all of its windows and nothing happens when I click on anything in the windows that do open. Nothing's frozen (the menus still respond), but there are no windows to work in.
I booted into Panther from my Backup drive and DVD SP works, but Motion won't even startup.
I'm hurtin' here. Can anyone help?
I'm using DVD SP v2.0.5 and Motion v1.0.1 on a Dual 1.42 PowerPC G4 with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM and an ATI RADEON 9600 Mac Edition video card.

  • No DVD predesigned menus in Encore cs3

No DVD predesigned menus available in Encore cs3. XP pro OS 3.06 Ghz Intel premium dual CPU 3.25 GB Ram. Any solutions?

    Hi Jbowden,
Thank you so much for answering, very much appreciated. Yes, i'm aware that many changes have taken place in all the more recent versions of Photoshop, but i was hoping that the older one would still work, and it looks like it should. It does seem to work in layers, in trying to read the manual. But the real surprise is what you mentioned, about being able to edit menus right in Encore, because the Encore manual seemed to indicate that editing could be done only in Photoshop. That's great news! I just now tried looking ath the Concore manual again, but how in the world do i do that? Say edit a button on a submenu that says "Episode 1" to read "Monday"? Or Chapter 1 instead? Or now would i edit the main name in the "Sunset" menu from "Inspiration" to something else? For the life of me, i just can't figure out how to do that! Forget motion and stuff, i'm just hoping to achieve a regular menu that i can author a DVD with! I've been using DVD IT up to this point, and the whole concept of each program seems to be radically different. Thanks so much for all your help!

  • DVD Animated Menus Going Dark at Still Frame...

I'm creating menus in Motion and bringing them into DVD Studio Pro. For some reason, if I set the menus to go 'Still' at the end of the animation, the background of the animation goes dark. There is nothing but the animated menu file and some overlays (colored boxes) for buttons. But somehow, DVD Studio Pro manages to make the background of the animation go dark. Or maybe it doesn't? Maybe this is Motion's fault?
If you've seen this before, please enlighten me. Thanks!

It's a little more complex than you might think. Dave nagel wrote a good article about it way back in time (DVDSP version 2, believe it or not). Have a read here:

  • Making a DVD without menus

    Hi all,
I'm a newbie to DVD Studio Pro. I'm wondering if there is a way to make the equivalent of an Autostart movie in iDVD. No menu, no buttons – just put the DVD in the player and it starts.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Andrew

    Thanks for that David,
I was trying what you suggest but in the process have hit another problem that is preventing me from making the DVD at all. The audio is not linked with the video. I have a 2-minute movie that I made in Final Cut Pro. The movie plays fine in FCP. To export from FCP, I made a Reference movie via:
File > Export > QuickTime Movie...
    Settings: Current Settings
    Include: Audio & Video
Markers: None (there aren't any in my movie)
In DVD Studio Pro, I clicked on the Import button and selected the .mov file.
Two items appear in the Name column: 2min.mov (Video) and 2min.mov (Audio)
I just don't get it. I've watched Larry Jordan's tutorial video on Lynda.com and am following the instructions to the letter. Do you know where I'm going wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

  • Premiere Elements 9 for Mac won't let me burn a DVD w. menus to DVD

So I am trying to burn a DVD with menus for a clinet. I am pretty new to all of this video editing stuff. I am a photographer that has now branced out.
I am following all of the instructions in the Classroom in a Book but I noticed a couple of things. I do not have the compression option that is shown in the dialogue box where it sets up your burn process.
Now all the encoding goes fine, but when it does get all the way to the end I get the message "internal software error" and then a bunch of mumbo jumbo that it doesn't let me see everything...
I am at a loss of why it is doing this.
    I am using a 2006 MacBook Pro with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB memory 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I am also running on the most up to date opearting system with Snow Leapord and the computer is completely up to date.
Any help that can be given is very much appreciated.

Oh believe me I keep waaaayyyy more then 50 gigs on my hard drive! As I said I am a professional Photographer so working with computers and all of the software comes easy to me generally speaking. The reasons why this is spitting my discs back at me is baffling.
The red lines only showed up once I started editing the clips because they are some of the clips that I edited, and not on the ones that I left alone because they needed no work done.
The files came in mostly off a Canon 1Ti.
As I said also, I have been follwoing the insturctions in the Clasroom in a book almost to the letter except for the one setting that it said to check off that I did not have that I could not figure out why.
This is the Quality: Fit Contents to available space part of it underneath the status and the presets!
I am truly baffeled and may burn it to my hard drive and then copy it to a disc which it says is also an option.

  • Modifying DVD Studio Pro Apple template's

I have a DVD Studio Pro question regarding how to modify DVD Studio Pro Apple template's with out loosing their key atributes of menu page quantity calculation and button advance direction flow. The Apple templet I was trying to modify was "Portfolio".

To what extent did you need to change it?
If you are wanting to add additional items to the existing template, then this is not a problem... just add what you need. If you want to change the background image then this too is probably possible. Apply the template, look in the assets tab, open the folder called 'Templates' and look for the file you want to change, then control+click on it, select 'reveal in finder'. From now on make a backup of the original and then change it as you see fit. Revert to backup when you need to
Not all templates are customisable, but the Portfolio one appears to be.

  • Flash DVD... Motion menus are coming out black

I have previously used the flash output in Encore in CS3 and CS4. First time using it in CS5. I like to use video clips as menu backgrounds and have done it many times before. I link both the video and the audio to the menu in the motion properties window. In CS5, it appears that this function works for DVDs, but not for Flash. When I do the Flash export, the menus are just a black screen with the audio I linked to.

Hey, I figured out a fix. Turns out it wasn't the clip format. Turns out that you must have a button on a motion menu, AND, you gotta have the buttons image eyeball poked out. So in this case, what I'm doing is trying to create a web site using this Flash DVD option. It's a web site that works like a DVD in a Flash player. So that means it's a web site with a full-screen option and a volume control. It allows me to take my motion graphics skills and apply them to web design without needing to know anything about Flash. • Quickly create 8 minute highest quality DVD with no menus from Motion 4?

What's the fastest/simplest way to create a high quality DVD without any menus that just plays from Motion 4?
    I set quality to best.
I just tried using Share, and I can see one of my processors working at 100%, but I've got no indication of any progress - or even that it is working, except I can see a few files in the directory I told it to create them in.
I told it to create a DVD (there was a checkbox), so I put a DVD in the drive.
I have no idea how long I should wait until giving up? I'd generally avoided trying to send anything to Compressor from motion, as it would take 10x longer.

    Heya Les,
For the quickest method at the highest quality I would export a self-contained movie from Motion and take the self-contained QT movie and bring it into Compressor. Because SD DVD is compressed to MPEG-2 video format you will want to have control over how the file is compressed at the target bitrate of compression in order to achieve the best quality. You would want to duplicate and edit one of the DVD settings in Compressor then set the video bitrate to about 7.5/mbps because anything over that bitrate may cause playback errors on certain DVD players. I may receive compensation from my link. Make sure the audio is set to 192/kbps AC3 in Compressor.
You can setup distributed processing with Qmaster to enable multiple processor cores in a cluster and take advantage of multi core processing in Compressor. Additional info if necessary (more on the web by searching).
Then after Compressor is finished compressing the self-contained QT file take the compressed MPEG-2 file and .AC3 audio file and import them into a DVD Studio Pro project and follow these instructions to make the movie autoplay without any menus. I'll throw up some screenshots on the linked page soon to provide a visual reference of how to use DVD Studio Pro to create a DVD that autoplays without a menu.

  • Motion menus just with audio

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a "motion" menu using just an audio file associated with the menu. The idea is to have a static menu with a background music.
I tried to to do this but when I build the DVD, Encore (CS4) complains about the pixel aspect ratio (says it is unsuported).
I guess that as it doesn't find any video to build the motion menu, its PAR isn't correct. Nonetheless I suppose that doing what I want to do is pretty standard.
Can someone please help me out?

I'm assuming that you're trying to add audio to a still menu.

  • Burned dvd and menus, audio, subtitles worked but no video

I with through the entire process of creating a iDVD project with an .AVI video that had subtitles. After it burned, it played on my dvd player with menus, sound and even the subtitles but there was no video. What went wrong? And how can I fix it? Does it have to do with the file being an .AVI file?
    Help appreciated!

Thank you Studio X and David for responding. Yes, I will stay away from m4v formats.
Do you have a fix on how to solve the "Codec could not be opened"?
I am scheduling an appointment with the Apple Store but I am not sure if the Genius Bar guys are up on FCP and knowledgable to figure out what changed and how to change it back to be able to playback my capture scratch files. I noticed some of the past capture scratch files no longer work and get the flashing dark green screen but some do work. It's a software issue but what is it? Any ideas?
