Modifying standard material type configuration provided by SAP

I was recently involved in a discussion regarding whether or not to modify sap provided material types (e.g. FERT)
My position was that SAP provided material type configuration should not be modified, instead a z-version of the standard material type should be copied over to a z-version or a y-version (FERT copied as ZFRT), configurations changes made the z-version. My position was based on the following considerations:-
Reference to the original
Possible implication at the time of future releases or upgrades - In Some of my previous projects this was a reason why the standard material type configurations were never touched
Hence I am curious to know if there a more current or correct position on this topic.

Hi Jose,
You are absolutely correct that standard material type should not be changed as you can always reference to the original if you want to create a new material type by copying the old ones. I too have seen ZFRT and FERT.
I go by creating a Z one, as I have always the option to reference the original Material Type. As the above members have already replied the same.
It is very easy to check the material type like FERT, ROH etc. However, say you have changed the settings for standard material type like FHMI, LEIH, VERP etc and you want to create a new material type by referencing any of the above, you will need to check client 000 (as referred by Jurgen) to check what Pricing control it have S or V. What Item Category is in original. What selection of views are there in original etc. you always have a better edge to check from the originals if you do not change them.

  • Regarding Standard Material Types in SAP

    Dear Gurus,
    We are Implementing New Project.
For CAPEX (Capital Goods) What should be Standard Material type to be Used.(ROH,FERT,........Which One among these).
For Engineering goods What should be the Standard Material Type to be used.
    With Regards,
    PMG

    Hi,
You can take material type ROH /or copy the same and make new material type with required valuation class and G/L setting.
And while making PR and PO select account assignment A-Asset and make capital PO accordingly.
Hope this will resolve your issue.

  • Material Type configuration changes

    Friends,
We have a requirement to change the material type configuration from valuated to non valuated. I performed this change in sandbox and the system allows me to change the configuration.
There are some impacts of doing that like we need to kill all the open PO's an create new ones and also the value of stock will never get clears out etc...
So my question is whether is this a good practice to change the material type configuration or not.
    Has anyone done this before?
    Thanks for your responses
    Anil Yadalam

    Thanks Lakshman for the response.
If i create a new material type and make it as non-valuated then i will not be able to convert the material type using MMAM since it will give an error message about the Account category reference not being the same for both material types.
    Your response is appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Standard users of workflow provided by sap

I need to know who r all the standard users of workfow Provided by SAP like (WF-BATCH).where can i find the list of these standard users.Kindly help me in this issue.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ramesh Kumaar.S

    Hi Ramesh,
Your question is not clear. The user names used by workflow is :
    WF-ADMIN
    WF-BATCH
If no agents are found for a given task the workflow is sent to workflow admin (WF-ADMIN).
All the background tasks/methods are executed by the workflow batch (WF-BATCH) user.
All other users in workflow are the user names who use the SAP system (end users). They are the workflow agents.

  • Material Type Configuration and Creating Z configured Material Types

    All-
Every solution architect I have contacted has told us that itu2019s standard practice to create copies of standard SAP material types (and all other configuration) and then update configuration to make the object client specific rather than just modifying SAP standard.  You do that because when SAP delivers upgrades they may update standard configuration keys and that can cause disruptions.  We talked to some folks at SAP who told us the same thing.
My Client had previously agreed to this but now some of their IT resources have pushed back with their primary argument being u201Cthis hasnu2019t affected us for the last 15 years so we want to continue with what we haveu201D i.e. modifying configuration and customizing the SAP delivered material types.  Theyu2019ve also found some SAP documentation that says itu2019s fine to do it either way.  I donu2019t have the depth of technical knowledge to get into all of the arguments for / against this.
Request u2013 Can anyone point us to a position paper or document that states why we suggest this (reasons, pros, consu2026) or someone that could provide us with the expertise to clearly state why and what the consequences are if they donu2019t?  Or if this is really just something that is suggest based upon the potential for problems and they can do whatever they want?
Any information would be greatly appreciated

You obviously can modify a lot of standard objects because the config. option is there.
The main reason not to is because they act as models e.g. what is the SAP standard model for configuration of a Traded material (in the given Solution, Country etc.).  If you have copied the std and modified the Z version you can always refer back to the std if you run in to unexpected difficulties. If you've modified the std, you have no model to refer to.  If you modify the std and it then doesn't do what you want or you hit an issue of some form, you pretty much have to figure out why yourself because SAP would probably charge you.
Material Types in particular involve a huge potential number of fields (900+) and complex field selection.
If you do modify a standard, at least document exactly what changes were made so you and subsequent support personnel can understand how the object has been modified. 'Small' modifications of objects you may well have no future issue with, 'big' modifications of big objects could well come back to haunt you.

  • Pro's and Con's to using Copies of Standard Material Types

    Hi
We are looking for the pro's and con's of using copies of standard SAP material types for my company.  We are a consumer goods company and looking to see if there are drawbacks and benefits when it comes time to upgrade SAP.  Also what industry standards are out there for when we change / add views to standard SAP material types.
    Regards,
    Josh

there are no real pros and cons - just philosophy
We're using the SAP given material types, even adjusted to our needs, already for many years from 3.1 to 6.3 release and had never any issue with hotpackages or ith release changes.
We are using as well many own material types created by copy of SAP material types.
the only issues I know are, that the users need some time to understand which type to use if the description appears twice.
(Remember, it is a personal setting if keys are shown in dropdown lists, and I know many user who do not display the keys)

  • Changing standard material types

    Hello All,
    We are using ECC 6.0
I want to change few settings for standard materials types like FERT, HALB, ROH and HAWA.
For example Standard FERT does not have Purchasing view enabled but I enabled it.
Will these settings be reset when we go for upgrade in future?
    Thanks
    George

    Hi,
You can change settings related to std config, depending upon your clients requirement using T code OMS2. In that case once you make changes in std config then all materials are created with purchasing view.
But it will reset after you upgrade your system in future as these are standard SAP settings.
As our collegue mentioned it is better to create another material type instaed of changing std material type.
Hope this will resolve your issue.
    Best Regards,
    Avinash.

  • AS2 Module tab.. Mapping Names for modified Standard Msg types ? ? BIC ??

    HI All,
Im using AS2 adapter for standard PO message type <b>orders.orders05</b>
and i thought of using the seeburger standard mapping name  "<b>See_E2X_ORDERS_850</b>"  in AS2 Module tab.
Now the problem is my client has extended the idoc to <b>orders.orders05./glb/orders</b> by adding few more fields in some of the segments.
Since we have modified the standard message type and i dont think the standard mapping name will work for this ?? im i correct??
If yes, i think we need to use BIC mapping tool and modify the standard xsd by importing and we need to create the new map ( ex:<b>map_E2X_Orders_Modified.xml</b>) ,generate the SDA file for this and we need to deploy SDA into XI.
And finally if we use the modified mapping name in our AS2 module tab.I think it will work????
Any suggestion or inputs we can approach in these kind of situations.
    Thank you.
    Regards
    Seema.

    Hi Chirag,
Nice to see you back in action
I will be doing the below steps in BIC.. and let me know if anything is wrong in this.
i will Create the Project name as <b>" Project_Orders_Modified"</b> in BIC tool
    1) i will modify the std msg xsd in txt file and Under my project name i will import it under EDIFACT. Save it and i will export it and save it in folder as...
           <b> msg_DT_Orders.xml</b>
2)i will create XML Message for this by giving
    <b>
    source : msg_DT_Orders.xml
    Target : msg_XML_DT_orders.xml</b>
I will import it into My Project " Project_Orders_Modified"
    3) I will create the CreateMappingEDI to XML by giving
    <b>source : msg_DT_Orders.xml
    Target : map_E2X_DT_orders.xml</b>
I will import it into My Project " Project_Orders_Modified"
Then I will run the map.. and checks if it is working fine.
If yes, i will import my mapping into Active mappings and i will generate SDA file and will deploy into XI .
Finally i will use the mapping name " <b>map_E2X_DT_orders</b> " in AS2 Module tab.
Let me know if anything wrong.

  • Modifying of material type

    Hi,
I have created one material in MM01.
Selected material type is Rawmaterial, but I need to change this into finished goods type.
How to change the material type and aswell as valuation class for that particular material.

    Hi
Before changing material type please ensure that there are no open PR/PO/contracts /Scheduling agreements .In case if any one of them exists then you need to set deletion indicator for all such open PR/PO/contracts /Scheduling agreements .
First Goto Transcation code MMAM - This tcode is for changing the material type from ROH to FERT and not valuation class.
If you change the material type in MMAM transaction automatically the valuation class will be changed in material master. The system will take the changed material type valuation class which was created for that material type.
Second Goto T code MM02 - Accounting View 1 - This tcode is to change the valuation class directly.
Whether you can or cannot change the valuation class directly without changing the material type depends on your own company img settings.
If you want to change the valuation class, there may be because of one or more of the following already exist for the material:
    1) Valuated stocks in the current period or in the previous period.
    2) Open purchase orders may be there.
    3) Production orders  which a goods movement has already taken place.
For this first you have to do the following:
If valuated stocks already exist, you can change the valuation class only:
    a) Post the stocks of the material to an interim account.
    b) Change the valuation class in the material master record.
    c) Post the stocks of the material back to their original account.
If open purchase orders already exist, you can only change the valuation class if you first flag the corresponding purchase order items for deletion.
If production orders exist for which a goods movement has already taken place, you can only change the valuation class if you first set the status of the production orders to deleted
By this you can keep the same material type as FG and can assign the proper valuation class.

  • Is there any standard extractor for AFD provided by SAP?

    Hi.
We are planning to implement SEM-BCS ? From this forum and  SAP documentation( help.sap.com and service.sap.com), I just found that integration with ECC is total records(RFD) and some master data. Unfortunately, I could't  find any further integration point. AFD such as inventory balance, Gross profit etc seems to be extracted from ECC such as FI, MM or CO module. But there is no mention in SAP documentation.
I think I missed good integration point SAP provided.
Otherwise, We have to develop the some program to extract AFD. Is my understanding correct?
Is there anybody who has experience to extract AFD from ECC with standard extractor or CBO program?

The main problem with automatical load of AFD is the strict dependence on the ECC/R/3 configurations that might differ very significantly.
So, there is no standard extractors for AFD.
IPI - I used to figure out the ways of calculating the figures needed for IPI with non-standard functionality. And understood that even with a standard functionality the task of extracting the proper values are not esy at all.
IPA - there are so much data that needed to be entered for IPA, plus FI-AA configuration depends on implementation...
CoI - the most of data for it is accessible in ECC, even in RFD.
So, forget about the standard and easy way of extracting the data needed. Try to examine the configuration of modules you are interested in, and find the ways to extract the data.

    Hi
Have you thought of using Transaction variant through transaction code SHD0,
which is your materrial type is it SAP standard?
you create a transaction variant with your value of acc *** group and you can make it as default.
you can also use for e.g MMR1 for raw material , MMH1 for tranding and so on and change this , but this will only be in case of sap standard material type.

  • Need Help regarding which Material Type to use for the Scenario

    Hi,
Here we are configuring the service scenario.
Suppose Electric Switch of customer flat is not working.
Here in this case I will purchase the switch. And along with service order
I will do the delivery of the Material. Then will raise the Invoice to the customer
with service charge as well as material cost.
Here I will have to run the MRP also for that material  to raise the PR if stock goes below
    the reorder point.
So I will have to maintain the Purchase view, Sales View & MRP view to that Material.
So in this case which standard material Type can I use for this material? Or I have to create
our own material Type for this material.
    Regards,
    Pradip

ROH is usually a material type that is supposed to be consumed in production.
HALB is a semifinished good, own produced and meant to consumed in production.
Both are usually not forseen to be sold.
A material that you buy yourself and sell to a customer is a trading good, which is HAWA in SAP.
