Modifying the ownership of the Applications folder's content

Hi,
Over time applications where installed by drag and drop, from either admin or non-admin user. Overtime admin user became non-admin user or vice-versa. Finally overtime the Applications folder's ownership gets really mixted up.
Is it a good idea to modify the ownership of the Applications folder's content ? By content I mean modifying the ownership of all folders and content inside the Applications folder ?
If yes, what sould be the permission/ownership of all the Applications folder's content ? admin
Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert,
There are 3 Rights/Permissions on each, depending who you want to be able to use them & how.
Most of My Apple APPs are...
Owner = system = Read & Write
Group = admin = Read & Write
others = Read Only

Don't change the ownership/permissions of the Applications folder itself, nor of any Apple applications.
Apple applications' permissions are owner:root read+write, group:admin read+write, and others:read only. As for third party applications that install by drag and drop: typically they are read+write for the user that installed them, and read only for all others. From a functional standpoint, the discrepancy is really not a big deal. But if you want to change everything so that third party apps' permissions match Apple apps' permissions, enter these Terminal commands while logged in to an admin account:
    sudo chown -R root:admin /Applications/*
    sudo chmod -R ug+rwX /Applications/*
It is generally good to log in to an account where the user does not have write access to applications; because a malware could modify the app without the user's knowledge in such a case. For this reason it is a good idea to use a non-admin account for everyday use, and only log in to the admin account when a certain task requires it.

  • I moved my applications folder to the desktop, but modified the applications in my dock, and now i have too many copies of the applications folder and cant get rid of them without being unable to use the applications :(

I moved my applications folder to the desktop when i first got my imac. now i want to get rid of it, but when i put it in the trash, it wont let me use the applications, even though they are in more than one folder. I am at a loss of what to do now cause i have two copies of everything. please help me figure this out.

Where was the one that you moved to your desktop before you moved it to the desktop?
I really don't understand what you're trying to say. If I have a folder in A, and I move it to B, then the folder will be in B. There is no duplication. I still have only one folder, only the location is different.
Furthermore, your desktop is on your hard drive. Everything is on your hard drive.

  • I cannot install an application in the Applications folder without removing it first

For some time now, I have noticed that I cannot install an application into the application folder without first removing it from the folder. If I try to install it by dragging the icon to the application folder, I get a warning that the application can't be moved because the folder "Applications" can't be modified. I click on authenticate and enter the root username and password. I am warned that the application already exists in the location. I am asked if I want to replace the item. The options presented are "Keep both files", "Stop", and "Replace". I choose "Replace". I am then prompted for an administrator's name and password. I enter "root" and the root password. I then get this lengthy error message:
The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.
I checked the permissions and "locked" was already deselected. The permissions grant my regular user read and write permissions, "staff" read-only, and "everyone" read-only. If I add "admin" with read and write permissions, nothing changes, i.e. I get the same error. If I try to enter my user credentials, they are rejected. My user is not an admin user. Previously, when I enterered the root username and password, the operation would complete successfully.
Now if I first remove the application from the Applications folder, then drag the application to the folder, I am prompted for an administrator's name and password. When I enter it, the application is copied successfully.
I have tried fixing file and directory permissions from the disk utility, but that doesn't fix the problem.

When you say, "locked" was already deselected, I take it that you mean the small icon at the bottom right of the Get Info window displayed an open lock picture.
Have you tried locking it, then unlocking it again?  I expect you will be able to lock it by simply clicking on the open lock icon, but to unlock it again you will need to supply an Admin password.
Odd that DU didn't fix it.  That would be my first thought also.  Suggest trying it again, if you haven't already done so.
Speaking of DU, have you verified your HDD?
My Applications folder permissions read -
    System          Read and Write
    admin           Read and Write
    everyone      Read only

  • I've lost the application folder from Favorites. How do I get it back?

I've somehow lost the application folder which should be located in Finder - left hand side under Favorites. I can do a search and find a specific application located on the hard drive - so I haven't deleted them.  But I want the Application folder with the different applications back in Finder.  I'm kind of hesitant about starting a search in areas I know nothing about.  Can anyone help?

    Hi JanMP,
The sidebar in a Finder window can be easily modified, so it's possible that the Applications folder may have been accidentally dragged out of it. You should be able to drag it back on from its current location (Macintosh HD > Applications), as outlined in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: Customize the Finder toolbar and sidebar

  • Copy file from mounted DMG to the Applications folder?

I'm wanting to copy file (application) from a mounted DMG to the Applications folder. Something like:
    tell application "Finder"
    try
    copy "Volumes:Dropbox Installer:Dropbox.app" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications"
    end try
    end tell
    (But that doesn't work).
Preferably overwriting the existing application in that folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    tell application "Finder"
duplicate file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" with replacing
    end tell
I tried this principle in Applescript (Mavericks) and received error...
Finder got an error: Can’t set folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" to file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip".
"001TEST" is a disk image with filename of "S001TEST.dmg"
Any ideas why this won't work?

  • Downloads of updates not saving, no prompts or icons in the Application folder-how do I ensure updates are saved?

I am following the instructions to download v 6 but receive no prompt to move the Firefox icon to the applications folder. I have done that anyway, but it's not saving-the latest version is July 11. I then get reminders to update all the time-what am I doing wrong?
I am working on a Mac laptop

A lot of people panic when they see Photoshop displaying differently from other software. But that's normal and expected. Here's what happens:
    1. Photoshop is color managed and performs a document profile > monitor profile conversion when it displays. So whatever the document profile is, Photoshop will display correctly - unless you have CM policies set to "off" (...!)
    2. Other applications, including many web browsers, aren't color managed and will just send the file numbers directly to the display. This distinction is extremely important, because there will be a slight difference. Again, that's normal. Photoshop is right and the other apps are wrong.
    3. Without color management, it all hangs on how your monitor displays color. Most monitors are so close to sRGB that any sRGB file will display roughly correctly. This is why sRGB is the de facto web standard: it can live without color management. And that's why you should always convert web material to sRGB. Yes, that's the Edit > Convert to Profile option. You can also use Save For Web to do this if you check the appropriate boxes.

  • I have tried to download Mavericks on my 2010 iMac(10.6.8), but nothing happens, not even the install app downloads, also I tried to download chrome, I moved it to the applications folder and when I opened the folder it wasn't there

I have tried to download Mavericks on my 2010 iMac(10.6.8), but nothing happens, not even the install app downloads, also I tried to download chrome, I moved it to the applications folder and when I opened the folder it wasn't there. I have a 1tb hard drive that is mostly empty. By the way I just got this imac used from a reseller.

Mavericks downloads into the Applications folder, where you can install it.   Some Mac App Store Troubleshooting information and how to resume a download that was interrupted; some of the information here might get you an answer.   Failing that, try contacting Apple Support.

  • Move an application from the "users" folder to the "applications" folder

I downloaded 2 adobe trial applications to the "users" section of my drive due to the fact that I misunderstood the directions - I have not launched them as yet. Is it Possible to MOVE/DRAG the 2 applications to "applications" folder?  I am running MAC OSX10.7 on a MAC MINI . As these were really large downloads, I am crossing my fingers that this may work. Thank you.

While that DOES work, this is still an incredibly annoying problem.  I have never noticed this as a problem before (although I can't even really remember the last time I moved something out of my Applications folder).  I would really like it if this would just stop happening and allow me to just move applications wherever I want by clicking and dragging.  This seems like some type of feature that could be turned off.  I even noticed that when I try to drag something out of the Applications folder, my cursor turns into the alias arrow, indicating that it will only make an alias of the application, and not actually move it.  Is there any way to prevent this from happening to begin with, rather than just working around it?

  • Just Downloaded the New Version and Cannot Move it to the Applications Folder from the Desktop

I have just downloaded the latest version of firefox to my iMac running on OS 10.5.8. The download comes in, but pops up on my desktop and when I go to move it to the applications folder - all that will move is an alias - the application remains on my desktop and of course doesn't run. How do I download it direct to the applications folder - or to a location or save where it can be moved as the instructions imply.

I have the shortcuts on my browser to the sites that I go to frequently. It's when I press those buttons (which have always worked before and I checked their URLs) it takes me to the Yahoo Page not Found page. But then when I click the shortcut button again, it usually works.

  • I downloaded and installed Production Premuim CS5 on my computer and when I try to open it out of the applications folder it bounces at the bottom and then disappears.

I downloaded and installed Production Premuim CS5 on my computer and when I try to open it out of the applications folder it bounces at the bottom and then disappears. Does anyone know why this is? I've tried everything to open them but they will not open. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a mac osx version 10.9.2. I used to have the student version of creative cloud cs6 earlier this year. I cancelled my subscription several months ago and bought cs5 two weeks ago. I never had any problems with the cloud. I went through the entire download process for CS5, and they all showed up in my applications folder and appeared to have downloaded but every time I try to open them they bounce around next to the application manager icon and then disappear.

  • I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. Help!

I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are.

You don't need iDVD unless you are going to make DVDs. If you are just trying to share files, iDVD won't help you at all.
What you want to do is in iMovie, choose File/Share/File, and export that way. It creates an .mp4 file that should be readable on Macs or Windows.
You could also File/Share/YouTube if you don't mind posting them to YouTube, because of course YouTube videos are watchable by any Mac or Windows computer made in the last 10 years.

  • Blue screen while trying to open the applications folder?

While using safari, or when clicking the Applications folder, my MacBook will turn completely blue and then go to the desktop as if it were just restarted. I tried installing fire fox to see if it was a safari thing but it still does it. I've called Apple but I cant even talk to someone without paying them because it's out of warranty. I'm not brilliant with Macs even though I have multiple products and there isnt an Apple store where I live. Any advice on how I can fix this problem?

    Hi Mastan
The report mentioned by Rajen should clear the inconsistent records.
Please observe that you could have found this by yourself report with a quick note search for this error message or even searching for old threads.
Even a google search points to the solution.
You should do your own research before opening such kind of thread.
