  • A significant portion of the database buffer cache has been written out to the system paging file.

    Hi,
    We seem to get this error through SCOM every couple of weeks.  It doesn't correlate with the AV updates, so I'm not sure what's eating up the memory.  The server has been patched to the latest roll up and service pack.  The mailbox servers
    have been provisioned sufficiently with more than enough memory.  Currently they just slow down until the databases activate on another mailbox server.
    A significant portion of the database buffer cache has been written out to the system paging file.
    Any ideas?

    I've seen this with properly sized servers with very little Exchange load running. It could be a  number of different things.  Here are some items to check:
    Confirm that the server hardware has the latest BIOS, drivers, firmware, etc
    Confirm that the Windows OS is running the recommended hotfixes.  Here is an older post that might still apply to you
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dblanch/archive/2012/02/27/a-few-hotfixes-to-consider.aspx
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2699780/en-us
    Setup a perfmon to capture data from the server. Look for disk performance, excessive paging, CPU/Processor spikes, and more.  Use the PAL tool to collect and analyze the perf data -
    http://pal.codeplex.com/
    Include looking for other applications or processes that might be consuming system resources (AV, Backup, security, etc)
    Be sure that the disk are properly aligned -
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mikelag/archive/2011/02/09/how-fragmentation-on-incorrectly-formatted-ntfs-volumes-affects-exchange.aspx
    Check that the network is properly configured for Exchange server.  You might be surprise how the network config can cause perf & scom alerts.
    Make sure that you did not (improperly) statically set msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax and msExchESEParamCacheSizeMin attributes in Active Directory -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee832793(v=exchg.141).aspx
    Be sure that hyperthreading is NOT enabled -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd346699(v=exchg.141).aspx#Hyper
    Check that there are no hardware issues on the server (RAM, CPU, etc).  You might need to run some vendor specific utilities/tools to validate.
    Proper paging file configuration should be considered for Exchange servers.  You can use the perfmon to see just how much paging is occurring.
    These will usually lead you in the right direction. Good Luck!

  • SCOM reports "A significant portion of the database buffer cache has been written out to the system paging file. This may result in severe performance degradation"

    This was discussed here, with no resolution

    I have the same issue.  This is a single-purpose physical mailbox server with 320 users and 72GB of RAM.  That should be plenty.  I've checked and there are no manual settings for the database cache.  There are no other problems with
    the server, nothing reported in the logs, except for the aforementioned error (see below).
    The server is sluggish.  A reboot will clear up the problem temporarily.  The only processes using any significant amount of memory are store.exe (using 53GB), regsvc (using 5) and W3 and Monitoringhost.exe using 1 GB each.  Does anyone have
    any ideas on this?

    Brian,
    We had this event log entry as well which SCOM picked up on, and 10 seconds before it the Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange updated all of its engines.
    We are running Exchange 2010 SP2 RU3 with no file system antivirus (the boxes are restricted and have UAC turned on as mitigations). We are running the servers primarily as Hub Transport servers with 16GB of RAM, but they do have the mailbox role installed
    for the sole purpose of serving as our public folder servers.
    So we theroized the STORE process was just grabbing a ton of RAM, and occasionally it was told to dump the memory so the other processes could grab some - thus generating the alert. Up until last night we thought nothing of it, but ~25 seconds after the
    cache flush to paging file, we got the following alert:

  • Mdworker saturating the system.log file

    Hi,
    i have a problem on my late 2010 MBA, running 10.6.8. Frequently, the fan goes frantic, and it appears it is linked to mdworker running over and over again. It seems to be doing that when the vpn from the company is running (Juniper through Secure App Manager).
    I checked the system.log file and it is 2.63Go for the past 5 days! Mostly filled with
    Jan  3 08:45:39 Puss mdworker[59604]: socket(PF_ROUTE) failed: Operation not permitted
    Jan  3 08:45:39 Puss sandboxd[59747]: mdworker(59604) deny system-socket
    Jan  3 08:45:39 Puss sandboxd[59747]: mdworker(59604) deny network-outbound /private/var/run/mDNSResponder
    (repeated 500 times and over, and eventually:
    Jan  3 08:45:39: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
    Jan  3 08:45:39 Puss mdworker[59604]: socket(PF_ROUTE) failed: Operation not permitted
    Jan  3 08:45:39 Puss sandboxd[59747]: mdworker(59604) deny system-socket
    Jan  3 08:45:39 Puss com.apple.launchd[1] (0x100101ea0.mach_init.mdworker[59604]): Exited with exit code: 1
    Can the vpn really have an influence on Spotlight? What is spotlight trying to index and why is it denied?
    Eventually, i may be dreaming, but it seems that something is chewing up my SSD space. Without adding much files, it feels like free space is going down.
    Thanks for any help.

    I solved the problem by adding the hidden '/private' directory on the harddisk to the places that spotlight is forbidden to index (in the systems preference pane -> Spotlight ->Privacy)
    You have drag the '/private' folder into the locations box.
    You may have to install something like 'secrets' to show hidden folders in the finder.
    (see here: https://code.google.com/p/blacktree-secrets/wiki/Help )
    ignore everything above - same error messages came back

  • Problems modifying the httpd.conf file

    We are running Flash Media Server 4.5 on Windows Server 2008. We want to move the vod folder which by default is in webroot. We create a new vod folder and then modify the httpd.conf file so that it points to the new vod location. We then stop and restart the Flash Media Server service. However, the server acts like the old paths are cached somewhere in the system. Videos in the new vod folder do not work. Videos in the old vod folder open even though the httpd.conf file was modified.
    We made sure that the client browsers on which we tested this had their cache cleared.
    Anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?

    Thanks for your reply! I tried restarting the FMSHttpd service separately. Still encountering this issue, however.
    Here's what we are doing:
    1. We create a new vod folder.
    2. We modify the httpd.conf file in Flash Media folder -> Apache2.2 -> conf so that it points to the new vod location. For example, we make a modification to HttpStreamingContentPath like the following:
    <IfModule jithttp_module>
    <Location /hds-vod>
        HttpStreamingJITPEnabled true
        HttpStreamingContentPath "..\..\[new vod folder]"
        HttpStreamingJITConfAllowed true
        JitFmsDirPath ".."
        Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks
    # Uncomment the following directives to enable encryption
    # for this location.
    #   EncryptionScope server
    #   ProtectionScheme phds
    </Location>
    </IfModule>
    3. We restart the FMSHttpd service.
    After doing this, we find that the path to the old vod folder is still working. Videos in the new vod folder don't open as expected.
    Are there any other steps that we should be taking? Many thanks for any help.

  • ESE - Event Log Warning: 906 - A significant portion of the database buffer cache has been written out to the system paging file...

    Hello -
    We have 3 x EX2010 SP3 RU5 nodes in a cross-site DAG.
    Multi-role servers with 18 GB RAM [increased from 16 GB in an attempt to clear this warning without success].
    We run nightly backups on both nodes at the Primary Site.
    Node 1 backup covers all mailbox databases [active & passive].
    Node 2 backup covers the Public Folders database.
    The backups for each database are timed so they do not overlap.
    During each backup we get several of these event log warnings:

    We've rescheduled the backups and the warning message occurences just move with the backup schedules.
    We're not aware of perceived end-user performance degradation, overnight backups in this time zone coincide with the business day for mailbox users in SEA.
    I raised a call with the Microsoft Enterprise Support folks, they had a look at BPA output and from their diagnostics tool. We have enough RAM and no major issues detected.
    They suggested McAfee AV could be the root of our problems, but we have v8.8 with EX2010 exceptions configured.
    Backup software is Asigra V12.2 with latest hotfixes.
    We're trying to clear up these warnings as they're throwing SCOM alerts and making a mess of availability reporting.
    Any suggestions please?
    Thanks in advance

    Having said all that, a colleague has suggested we just limit the amount of RAM available for the EX2010 DB cache
    Then it won't have to start releasing RAM when the backup runs, and won't throw SCOM alerts
    This attribute should do it...

    "networksetup is trying to modify the system network configurations" type your password to allow this.Type your password to allow this.  No amount of password typing seems to satisfy the request. The pop up box will not go away!!!!

    Hi Glenyse,
    Did you find the answer to your question?  I have the same problem.  Or can anyone else help?
    My wife’s 2012 Macbook Pro has Yosemite and is using Wi Fi for the internet connection.
    Every time, both on startup and awaking from sleep, a window appears on the desktop with a locked icon saying, “Networksetup is trying to modify this system.  Type your password in to allow this”.
    The window (which can’t be moved or dragged) shows the computer’s user name. The password has to be repeatedly typed in as many as 10 times and the highlighted ‘modify configuration’ box clicked before the window disappears and the computer then functions normally.
    Needless to say, this is driving my wife up the wall…    I would certainly appreciate information on how to get rid of this troublesome window!

  • Why i always get "Network is trying to  modify the system network configuration type your password to allow this

    Hello, let's see if this old cure still works...
    To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

    Unless I don't understand what a "PHP error file" is, your topic post makes it seem that you feel the "PHP error files" are executable, which is presumably not the case. Please describe in more detail what you really want to do.

    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

    Hi orion,
    Sorry that was the impression made by the support agent. If the version of the software that you have is 3.0 or 3.2, then the catalog can be upgraded when you run the trial version of Photoshop Elements. Version 8 had no time limitations, not sure if version 9 will timeout after 30 days or not.
    Just install, and when you launch, Elements will automatically convert the catalog to a format that it can read.

  • Windows could not finish configuring the system error after sysprep /generalize

    Hi
    I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate RTM off from technet and as always I do make use of WIM images on having them deployed to my home PC's
    I was able to have it installed on a clean machine and once the wizard appeared i immediately entered Audit mode (shift+ctrl+f3) and the usual I loaded all of the software i need to pre-install after I was done I Immediately loaded sysprep and had it with the generalized option
    now this is where the problem begins....... after it restarts during the "Setup is starting Services" screen it gives me a message box error saying "Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt resume configuration, restart the computer" and once I press ok it jsut restarts and gives the same error again.
    This does not happen when i dont select the generalize option in sysprep.
    Anyone who had the same issues?

    I now have the ACTUAL SOLUTION to this problem.  This solution will actually tell you exactly what registry key is causing your sysprep to fail, so then you don't have to slowly install
    every program until you find the problem -- especially since this didn't work for me because my problem has been intermittent.
    This issue is caused by certain registry keys that are either:
    a) Larger than 8kb
    b) Set with incorrect permissions
    c) Corrupt in some way
    For me, the problem was intermittent (same registry key would sometimes cause the issue and sometimes not - must be corrupt sometimes) so it was impossible to tell what program was doing it.  Luckily, there is a log you can look at that will tell you
    exactly what registry key is erroring out.  Here are the steps for getting the log you need to see:
    When you see the error message, do the following:
    1.) Push Shift+F10 to get to a command prompt
    2.) Navigate to C:\windows\Panther
    3.) Find the Setup.etl file and find a way to copy this file off of the system (I copied it to the D:\ partition and used Ghost to gather that partition and get the file off)
    4.) Copy the setup.etl file from the corrupted system to another computer that has Windows 7.  Put it on the root of C:\ for easiest access.
    5.) Open a Command Prompt on the Windows 7 computer.
    6.) Navigate to the root of C:\ (or wherever you saved the file)
    7.) Type "tracerpt setup.etl -o logfile.csv"
    8.) Close the command prompt and open up logfile.csv in your text editor of choice.
    9.) Look through the log file (towards the end probably) for messages that say "Failed to process reg key or one of it's decendants"  For me, the exact eror looked like this: "Failed to process reg key or one of its descendants: [\REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ESET\ESET
    Security\CurrentVersion\Plugins\01000200\Profiles\@My profile]"  If you search for "reg key" or "failed to process" you should find the failure.
    10.) Remove this software from your image, or find out how to get the registry key that is failing to work properly.
    After this, you should be able to properly identify any problem keys and remove/workaround them on your image.
    I see this post is about a year old at this point, but after searching the internet for weeks, I had high hopes for this solution. It seemed to go well, but the logfile.csv doesn't have the word "fail" in it anywhere...no "reg key", nothing. Did a sysprep
    install with an unattend.xml answer file that seems to be working properly, but hangs at "Setup is starting services." forever.
    At this point, I'm pretty convinced that the problem is a service or reg key error from one of the apps I installed during audit mode, but I can't tell which app/service is causing the problem.
    Are there any other methods for viewing failed services or registry errors that would cause the sysprep install process to hang at "Setup is starting services."?
    Willing to post logfile.csv from the "tracerpt setup.etl -o logfile.csv" command, or other log files such as setupact.log, etc. Nothing popped out at me.
    For now I think I'll start making multiple .wim files with only certain software installed to try to discover which application is the culprit...just wish there was an easier way.

  • Modify the initrd.gz file on Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd

    We are having issues with the Dell Optiplex 755 model with our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd but we found the issue.
    By remming (using the # symbol) out certain lines in the install.s file we are able to successfully intall the Zen Partition To test this out we ran manual from the Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd and copied the install.s from the Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd onto the Zen Partition and we modified the few lines in the install.s file (using the # symbol as mentioned earlier) and the ran install.s from the hard drive and it worked great! Running install.s from the Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd however generates errors.
    Here's the problem, we need to incorporate the changes to the install.s file into our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd.
    Now the install.s is located in the initrd.gz file, and the initrd.gz file is located at the root of our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd (bootcd.iso was copied from SYS:\Public\Zenworks\Imaging).
    We normally use the Slackware 10.2 Linux to compile drivers for our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd box as it uses the kernel 2.4.31 which is the kernel of our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd.
    How can we modify the install.s in the initrd.gz, and then include the new initrd.gz file which is located at the root of our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd?
    Also, does other files such as isolinux.cfg have to be factored in as well?
    We read some documentation on Novell's support but it keeps referring to initrd and not initrd.gz, also in the documentation I read it states that initrd is located in the /boot/loader on the bootcd, but we don't have these directories on our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd and we don't have initrd but we do have initrd.gz at the root of our Zenworks 4.01 ir7 bootcd as mentioned previously. We used our Slackware 10.2 Linux box to follow this documentation link below.
    Here's the link to the document we were doing for Netware 6.5 SP2 and earlier, we didn't use the Zenworks 7 approach:

  • Modifying the directory of file events

    Hi, This is my first post.  I apologize if my post is confusing.
    I have been looking all over for a way to modify the file events after the import from BO 6.5 into XI 3.1 automatically.
    I have about 1400 events to modify the directory they refer to.  Our current set up does not allow us to point to the current directory since we have to have the events trigger instead of having a watcher system.
    Has anyone used a java SDK to automate moving the events from
    server1\events_name to
    server2\events_name.
    It would just go through all the events and replace server1 with server2.
    Thank You in Advance for any help

    This code will trigger all the events in the 'repository'.  Can someone help modify this to change the server directory?  I believe that all that needs to be altered is this section.
    //Go through each event returned and add it to the table
                   for (int lIdx = 0; lIdx < lInfoObjects.size(); lIdx++)
                        //Retrieve the current event object
                        IEvent oEvent = (IEvent)lInfoObjects.get(lIdx);
                        IUserEvent lUserEvent = (IUserEvent) oEvent.getEventInterface();
                        lUserEvent.trigger();
    I think what needs to be replaced is lUserEvent.trigger(); with something that will modify the SI_FEATURES section of the event.  I am not sure how to get the current SI_FEATURES -> SI_FEATURES -> SI_FILE and replace with a different directory.
