Moire problem?

Prolgoue: Old man who doesn't have a lot of time to study manuals, etc.
Video Camera: Canon hmf 41, filming in auto mode, (MXP), 1920x1080(i ?). Video copied from camera in MTS mode to hard drive, imported into CS5, Premiere and After Effects.
Conditions. black background, room lighting from above (incandescent chandelier), extra light thru windows; "test" subject has yellow shirt with criss-cross , blue, white and red stripes; "real" subject: purple patterned shirt, no glasses. (see pics).
Looks good on both camera LCD and Samsung 21.5" HD TV set.
Then: Bad Moire (?) problem with Premiere and After Effects (Vista 64 or Win 7) on both computer monitor and same TV set, particularly for the test subject (me). The effects are not simply on the shirt, but also on the glasses frame. No moire with media player 12 on Win 7 computer .
An Adobe problem? All presets still produce moire. Gaussian blur reduces some of it, but I don't like the results.
Exporting the 1920 x 1080 mts file to mxf format, progressive, eliminates moire, but reduces it to 1440 x 1080.
Questions. Since I plan to be conducting many interviews, I would like to eliminate the moiré to begin with, so don't have to export, etc. There will be enough editing as it is. What are the consequences of the reduction from 1920 to 1440? It seems that keeping 1920 would be better.

As far as I can see on both picture i'll think that's no moire, but rather than an interlaced problem.

Moire effect (shimmering) in Ken Burns effect

My mum (mom to you north americans!) uses iMovie HD to create complex slideshows of photos taken with her Fuji digital still camera. She wants music, Ken Burns animation, nice transitions (variable, depending on the photo), captions and voice overs. She can do all of that with iMovie but she gets really severe moire interference patterns in any image with fine texture.
We use iLife '08 and the effect does not appear when she creates slide shows with the same photos in iPhoto. I hoped to create slideshows in iPhoto then export them as .dv files (PAL format) but the only decent format I can find is 640x480. I need dv which is 720x576. I'm sure earlier versions of iphoto could do this ...
I also tried iMovie '08 (what a backwards step that was!) but the moire effect was worse if anything.
I'm happy to show her how to export a quicktime file from iPhoto and then use iMovie HD to add music, captions, titles, voice overs etc. but how do I do it?
Is there a solution to the moire problem.
I have read mentions of "photo to movie" but we are on dial-up only so downloading apps is a big problem in the short term until I get home to my broadband.

G'day again Bengt,
I spent most of today working at this with no really satisfactory solution. I discovered how you were getting NTSC video out of iPhoto slideshows along the way. I tried scaling pictures to all sorts of sizes using multiples of 72 (ppi on screens), 720 (PAL DV res.) 50% increments on these, random sizes etc etc.
I discovered the Gaussian Blur method partially worked but reduced the sharpness of the images substantially. A very disappointing result compared the crisp, smooth animation in iPhoto itself.
I also played with FCE and produced much better results although some moire was still evident. I suspect some very slight G. Blurs would almost eliminate that but no point in pursuing it as Mum doesn't have FCE and it is way to complex for her to learn without lots of support and I'm only home for the holidays. I still have trouble with creating keypoints and animating images and video and I've been using it for two years ...
Thanks for your help but I have to say I'm deeply disappointed in Apple over this one. If they can output NTSC DV video they should be able to do it with PAL too - all the other iApps do.
When I get home to my broadband I'll try Photo to Movie and see if it would work better for Mum.

How do I get rid of Moiré in my footage?

I recorded some footage using my DSLR T3i and and some of the footage has some Moiré lines running around. Does anyone know if Final Cut Pro X can get rid of it? Free plug-ins?

Sorry, that was the best idea I had. I have a couple of things to check for my suggested solution. Don't know if it will help. But the price is right.
1. Is your moire problem in the entire frame? If not, use a mask to keep the blurred overlay to a minimum so that it only covers the moire. If the moired subject is moving or the camera is moving, you'll need to keyframe the mask.
2. Did you experiment with how much blur to add? Or use the opacity slider in the compositing section to reduce the effect?
3. I think the big problem with my idea is this quote: "Final Cut Pro X supports blend modes, but not all blend modes available in Photoshop have equivalents in Final Cut Pro X. For the best results, consider using Photoshop blend modes that have equivalents in Final Cut Pro X." from this support article. Seems like Color is one of those modes.

Flicker problem with still images

I have a series of still images in my timeline. There is a red garment in each of these images and it is producing a moray effect on the red garment. I also keyframed some of the still images for movement and it makes the problem worse. Is there a filter or some other trick I can use to get ride of the moray problem?

Thanks Al and sorry for the misspelling, however, the original still image does not have a moire problem, it is only when I import it to FCE and I keyframe a panning movement to the image that I get the moire effect which is very distracting. Do you know of any tricks within FCE that may help remove or reduce this effect?

I get a "shimmer" on some photos after applying & rendering Ken Burns

In a slideshow I'm attempting to make in iMovie, I'm getting a "shimmering" effect after applying the Ken Burns effect to photos I've imported from iPhoto. The shimmer appears most noticeable in shots of scenary, where there is a lot of detail like tree leaves or grass. (In addition, as many others also have noted and complained about, the resolution, and even the color, in iMovie is really a disappointment. This is especially distressing because the original digital photos I took are incredibly crisp and clear, with beautiful color, and the slideshows I made in iPhoto and played on my iMac are gorgeous!). The Ken Burns' "shimmer" & poor resolution in iMovie and burning slideshows onto a DVD seem hardly worth all the time & effort. This is a real shortcoming in the Apple software it seems to me. Apple needs to fix it in future updates to the Tiger operating system or in the forthcoming Leopard.

what you see is usually referred to as a 'Moire' pattern that is caused by high-contrast in your source material. This means that exactly the 'incredibly crisp and clear' advantage of your photo is ruining your clip. In photographs, moire problems are usually overcome by slightly softening (e.g gauss blurring) the offending areas before the final render pass. This you can apply to your source image as well, and then import it into iMovie.
Interestingly, a different approach is possible with moving media. Since moire patterns are artificial noise introduced into your clip, people have found that our 'noise filter (combine)' plug-in can get rid of this. Perhaps you can download the plug-in and try if it helps with your problem.

Native AVCHD support

We need native AVCHD support with no transcode option. if you have a quad or 8 core mac pro it will edit fine.. AVCHD is what the majority of prosumer cameras are and are going to be.. we want tapeless to save us the time and money, we shouldn't have to transcode it (though it should be an option)..
I think apple should realized a free update to support it.. Avid has realized this already and has both native import and AMA support for AVCHD.. now when will Final cut pro? it's making me want to switch to Media composer.

AVCHD not an editing codec. Supporting it would just mean your computer
is wasting processing power doing something silly. It's smarter to
transcode to an editing format and use your processor to do cool
effects and stuff.

Is the quality of my photo book normal?

Just picked up my first photo book today. I was surprised by the print quality. Print moire is so obvious everywhere. I used cell phone cam to take this picture and you can easily see the moire problem. Just wondering is it normal?

You do get such a warning if you're making a book/calendar whatever.

Help! How do I install export presets into CS4 (Mac)?

I'm technologically impaired, and attempting to install my school's export presets for Premier Pro CS4. I have two exec files ending in the file type "sqpreset", and no idea where to put them or what to do with them. I'm trying to solve a moire problem with my animation exports. Hellllllp!

I have never tried to install something created by a person from a group of presets (I am also on Windows, not Mac) so I think you are going to have to hope that someone comes along who knows how presets are copied to external file(s) on a Mac, to then be installed or placed on a different computer
What does the help file and/or online user guide say about exporting and importing presets?

Acabo de realizar una sesión a alguien con un traje de pata de gallo. Visualizo en el monitor lo que creo es el efecto Moiré (aunque tampoco estoy segura) o sea, los dibujos del tejido estan desfigurados. Al visualizarlo en tamaño impresión, el efecto desaparece. Mi pregunta es: ¿se ve solo en el monitor, o da problemas tambien al imprimir?

No es tan facil como lo describes.
En principio es como dices, es claramente un problema de visualizacion del monitor,,,,,,,,,,pero............
Como dices, al imprimir puedes volver a tener problemas.
En el momento en que haya un poco de desajuste en la impresion o con la propia simulacion de impresion.
Y si has de filmar el riesgo aumenta considerablemente, te recomendaria que primeros sacases unas pruebas buenas a su tamaño, para asegurarte, y si lo has de filmar, avisalo primero. es preferible scar solo un juego de fotolitos, que no encontrate el problema en maquina.

[PROBLEME] After Effects (erreur): Mémoire insuffisante pour initialiser PSL.

Bonjour, depuis ce matin j'ai un problèmes avec mon After Effect CS6,
je démarre un projet tout ce passe bien jusqu'au moment du rendu ça débute bien
mais au bout d'environs 60% un message d'erreur s'affiche je vous met la capture d'écrans.
J'utilise Windows 8.1
Ma config et un Intel Core i7 4790 avec 8GO de RAM

You have too *much* RAM. Assuming you cannot remove some, try
opening a
large graphic file in PhotoShop to use up some of that extra
RAM.

Also experiencing some funky issues with my wireless keyboard. With new batteries, it will just stop functioning. Certain keys intermittently won't work. Also the fans go on as soon as I turn the computer on - some times they stay on and sometimes they don't. Ever since upgrading the operating system - I've been having many issues with this iMac. Not happy. Any answers out there?

Thanks for your reply LexSchellings, There is no disc in the drive and I went through the suggestions you put forward on the phone with Apple support without any luck. I can put a disc in but it pops straight back out again without registering on finder.
The idea of using an external drive was to enable me to avoid the cost and loss of productivity whilst machine in repair... if I have to take it in to get the old drive removed than I might as well have a new internal drive put in, although I do worry about the reliability of these apple drives given my experience with this one coupled with my limited online research ... on line forums seem to be full of people with the same problem (although perhaps searching such forums is bound to make it seem a common problem as users with perfectly working machines are less likely to post (?)) Your reply suggests that no external drive will work whilst the existing drive is in place.
As a postscript: I do realise that this is a user forum ...my secondary question was asking if anyone knows how to put forward a case/complaint to Apple... I can't find a link on the support page that would enable me to do so and I was wondering if anyone on this user forum had any ideas/experience..

Problem to export a report (to PDF) after converting my reports to CR13

I have an old project with reports developped using Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2003 (.NET 1.1). I want to convert them so I can now use Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 (with .NET 3.5).
I installed Crystal Reports for VS2010 and I converted my reports to the new format. Unfortunately, one of my reports is not working anymore.
My ASP.NET application generate the report and export it as a PDF. I use CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument.Export().
Everytime I run this method, an exception is thrown...

I also tried to export the report (using PDF format) at design time with the "Export Report" button in Preview mode. It didn't work. But, I can export the report at design time using another format type (like XML).
The old version of te report (using .NET 1.1, CR9) work fine. As I said, other reports in that same project work perfectly.
Is someone have an idea of what's wrong!

The most common cause of this problem is having very large detailed images, or lots and lots of images in your report. The Crystal Report engine changed a lot from 9.1 to 13. The big change was from 9.1 to 10 though when we started using the RAS InProc engine.
The Crystal reporting engine is not efficient at handling the images and it can cause memory issues like you are seeing. As a test, try suppressing the images that show up frequently in your report and retry your export. If it works you'll have your answer and you'll need a new creative way to design your report without so many images.

Ps CS6 Problem: Lighting Effects filter quantises 16-bit height-map to 8-bit in a 16-bit document

16 bits per channel RGB mode.
The Lighting Effects filter quantises the optional height-map channel to 8 bits, which can result in a very obvious terraced-slopes appearance and moiré.
(Adobe, please do not simply reply with "you should be using 13.0.4" unless that actually fixes the problem.)

Alpha channels are 16-bit in a 16-bit per channel document. As Christoph said, selections are limited to 8-bit, so if you make a channel from a selection then that channel will have 8-bit quantisation.
Here is an example of Lighting Effects filter using a channel containing a 16-bit radial gradient as a height-map, and where the filter is quantising the height values to 8-bit.

How to avoid Moire Effects (jiggered still pictures) using iM and iDVD.

This is a discussion going on forever and forever in this forum. I had the problem of bad looking slideshows myself, and I am hearing the same tips over and over again that just don't work. This is what I found out on how to avoid moire effects in your still images, when you want to edit a slideshow using iMovie - and I personally think, this explanation makes a lot of sense.
Try it on your own and you will have had the last bad looking still image slidehow on the TV screen ever!! Here we go:
Like everybody here I am talking about the process of creating a slideshow incuding movie strips in iMovie to get as a final result a DVD with menus and such using iDVD.
And the common problem with stills and iMovie 5.02 are the so called jiggered pictures iMovie creates. Call it a moire effect, if you'd like.
Whenever full resolution still images are importet from iPhoto into iMovie, the quality that iMovie will spit out in the end is disgusting. Period. Just disgusting.
It has nothing to do with that iMovie does not display it properly on the Monitor or we are just in preview mode - the results are bad there and will be bad (maybe even worse) on the TV screen.
There is no SIGNIFICANT difference between wether the pictures are imported with KB on or off, whether they are imported as still frames or as video clips using iMovie "import" function. iMovie can treat the color fairly bad, overprocesses the pictures and - worst of all, the moiree effects you will see in the endresult are just very very bad. It is worse when the pictures are panning a lot (KB).. This is true for every picture containing a lot of detail (Trees, Forests, horizontol lines (stairs) etc.) - not so bad for closeup face shots, unless that person is really old
There is no SIGNIFICANT difference on the result by how the iMovie project is fed into iDVD. When the movie is sent to iDVD using the iM command "send to..." the quality is worse (and you let iM render when it asks) than if the movie is dragged into the iDVD window - but again, the difference is not significant. The result will suck. The DVD will also look bad, when the iMovie is exported has high res quicktime first, before imported into iDVD. Again, its slightly better that way, but not significant.
Whenever a slideshow is created in iPhoto and than exported to iDVD (or via being a quicktime movie through iMovie into iDVD) the result will be however stunning. But that totally defeats the purpose of iMovie and the degree of freedom of designing slidehows in a very appealing manner.....
The problem I think lies in how iMovie processes still images. And this is not a bug, but more of a mathematical/programmatical problem. iMovie has to REDUCE THE RESOLUTION of your still. A 2000x3000 pixel image @ 300 dpi(roughly the dimensions of a 6 MP image) has to be downsized to a TV image (NTSC or PAL, whichever) which has a resolution of approximately 480x640. HD is accordingly higher. The amount of pixels has to be reduced. iMovie can do that. NOT GOOD. But it can. The problem starts when the picture is panning around (KB). iMovie makes a let us say 5 second movie @ 30 fps out of one still image. Almost every frame will be slightly different from the previous one due to the used KB effect. So, the routine of iMovie does this downsize calculation for each single frame - and it removes each time different pixels from the still image, due to a slightly different source still image. Got it?
Now, when you look on how moiree effects occur (which is some weired math in it's own) than it makes sense, that we see all this jiggereing in horizontol lines of high res. patterns.
I found that if I reduce the size of each image in Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) prior to importing it into iMovie, the quality of the final product that iMovie and subsequently iDVD spits out in the end is AMAZING (reduce the dpi to approx. 72, so the image resolution is roughly 480x640). This is not a difficult process, because both programms (PS and PSE) handle BATCH PROCESSING. Just let the Mac work for a couple of hours or so.... its WORTH IT (and don't forget to make copies of the high res originals beforehand... :D).
(before you resize, find out about how to properly resize and rescale an image!!!!)
I am slightly annoyed that I found that out after producing a long long long long and really good slightshow, that is watchable but looks REALLY cheasy and cheap).

I agree that iMovie's still image quality is embarassingly bad and has many bugs.
Even with no Ken Burns, the sharp images tend to flicker on a TV because iMovie doesn't blur them properly.
And as you very well described, iMovie's Ken Burns produces uneasy zooms/pans because the subpixel rendering is, uh, suboptimal.
iMovie's immortal rendering bug when exporting non-Ken Burns'ed images to iDVD/tape doesn't make things any better.
Yes, bicubically downsampling the input images to 640x480 or adding gaussian blur to the megapixel input images takes care of the flicker and uneasy zooms/pans, but as a side-effect the maximal zoom-ins are then TOO blurry.
The best workaround is to use Photo To Movie's higher quality export setting. It has the best quality rendering engine (I recently compared it to Still Life and FotoMagico). Disclaimer: I'm just a satisfied customer of Photo To Movie.
