Monday Morning Woes -- Pointer Exceptions and other assorted aggravation

Gotta love Mondays.
Anyway, here's my latest issue:
A DataTable grabs all of the information from my database that I request AND it calculates a value based on two colums and throws them into a temporary column, which is exactly what I want it to do.
HOWEVER -- I want to take that information from the temporary column and transfer it to another column for storage. I've received a fair amount of errors, ranging from 'execute() not called' to the current one, nullPointerException.
Enclosed is a snippet of my greatly messed-up code, since I've been tinkering with this for quite some time.
po_itemsRowSet.setObject(1,getSessionBean1().getCurr_Item());
po_itemsRowSet.execute();
getSessionBean1().setTempPrice(new Integer(po_itemsRowSet_table.getInt("ext_price2")));
po_itemsRowSet.updateInt("ext_price", getSessionBean1().getTempPrice().intValue());
po_itemsRowSet.updateRow();
po_itemsRowSet.commit();
po_itemsRowSet.execute();
As you can see, I'm trying to store the information in the SessionBean and then implement it into the primary RowSet, similar to the methods I used for row insertion and updates. But also, as you can see, while the code is valid, something is missing that I'm not understanding.
Any insight on the issue would be absolutely wonderful.
Thanks, in advance.

Alright, let's simplify the issue, then.
If I can get the following code to work, my problem will be resolved.
getSessionBean1().setCurr_Item(((Integer) getValue("#{currentRow.ID}")));
po_itemsRowSet.setCommand(" update po_items SET ext_price = qty * unit_price where ID = ?");
po_itemsRowSet.setObject(1,getSessionBean1().getCurr_Item());
po_itemsRowSet.execute();
The error:
java.sql.SQLException: Can not issue data manipulation statements with executeQuery(). Is there a reason why this is and how do I get by it.
    ii. Can I just add the field directly within the MDS>file/user.xml? Would there be an issue with changing an existing attribute metadata using the user.xml?

    Pradeep thank you for your response. it was helpful. However, I also found the responses to both my questions.
    i. The null pointer exception was due to using a complex query I was using in the LOV query. I tried a simple query and that worked fine.
    ii. For modifying the user defined attributes one can consult the following forum post:
    OIM 11g - Change UDF Field Type form String to LOV
    Thanks

  • Null pointer exception and servlet

    I cant figure out why i am getting a null pointer exception. this works if i keep my form output in the same class as my driving servlet. All i did was break off the html display to a new form and i get a null pointer exception.

    anyway to write the system.err to an html screen with
    a servlet?Why would you ask that? Surely you should have asked "Any way to write a stack trace to an HTML screen from a servlet?"
    And in fact there is. I am sure you have not yet looked up the Exception class and the versions of its printStackTrace() method. But when you do, you will see that there are printStackTrace(PrintStream) and printStackTrace(PrintWriter). And you know how to write HTML (or text in general) to the servlet response so that it shows up in the client's browser, right? I will let you figure out how to put those things together.

    Hi zoya,
    Here is the problem:
    tbHelp = new TextBox("HeLp", "You can press the back button", 25, 0);
    This line declares a maximum textbox size of 25 but in reality he is declaring a textbox of size 29.
    Thats why it is throwing the illegal argument.
    happy coding :)

    Any ideas?

    Nothing really seemed to work when trying to solve this problem, just suddenly it stopped appearing. It might have been our installation of SPS 15, since it was around that time that the error went away.

  • Loss of color labels and other assorted bad things...

    My G5 seems to be acting a little weird lately- nothing I can pin down but lots of little things.
    • Beachballs spinning at odd times and places.
    • If I have assigned a color label to a TextEdit document, all of a sudden resaving the document causes the color label to reset to "no color". This seems to be a new trick, and I'll bet nothing good will come of that.
    • When opening some (but not all) graphic files with GraphicConverter, all of a sudden a "ghost image" of the picture paints itself on my right screen (of a two-screen setup). The actual GraphicConverter window itself is located on the left screen real estate, which is where I want it, but this "ghost image", without any framing, appears right in the middle of the right screen just after the normal GraphicConverter window opens on the left screen. Suspiciously, the size of the "ghost image" seems to be the same size as the actual legitimate image showing in the GraphicConverter window. I have my screen set to change the background picture every minute or so, and when it repaints the "ghost image" disappears. Moving any other window over the "ghost image" also erases it (like using a blackboard eraser).
    Just to make this REALLY challenging, this problem seems to be inconsistent, as it does not do this every time. If there is a pattern here, I'm missing it.
    So far (I think, but can't be sure) all of the graphics which fall victim to this phenomena have been scans by my Cannon scanner. Have had this scanner for a long time with no previous problems. If I open the same files which cause GraphicConverter to misbehave with other graphics-handling apps, there doesn't seem to be any problem with the other apps.
    Some general background info:
    • Have reinstalled the GraphicConverter app, and discarded it's preference files, but no help.
    • Have also reinstalled the Cannon driver app, and discarded it's preference files, but again no help.
    • If I boot the computer from a different (backup) external HD the same situation seems to exist. However, since I backup pretty often (using SuperDuper), if there is some sort of OS issue which has been building up it may be possible that the backup HD now simply has the same problem as the main internal HD.
    • I did rebuild my directories with DiscWarrior a few weeks ago, for what that's worth. Have done that in the past with no problems occurring.
    • The main internal HD is a fast 10000 rpm, and is partitioned into two sections: one section holds all of the OSX-10.4.10 and related operating files (apps, utilities, libraries and associated hooga-booga), with about 9.2gb still open. The other partition holds everything else, also with about 9.2gb still open. Three separate external HDs hold pretty much nothing but music files for iTunes.
    All ideas will be appreciated!

    Have just noticed activity monitor is indicating very unusual activity in something called "TruBlueEnvironment", whatever that is. It is currently accounting for over 95% of CPU activity, and these spikes may be the cause of the beachballs appearing at rather odd times.
    For anyone who knows what this may be all about, here are some current stats from the Activity Monitor:
    Threads: 15
    Ports: 227
    Context Switches: 3994556 and going up rapidly
    Faults: 19059 (and stationary)
    Page Ins: 2245 (and stationary)
    Mach Messages In: 56585 and going up fast
    Mach Messages Out: 122817 and going up fast
    Unix System Calls: 80243 and going up
    Can anyone give me some guidance on all of this?
    Thanks-

  • I can't figure out why I'm getting a Null Pointer Exception

    I'm writing a program that calls Bingo numbers. I got that part of the program to work but when I started adding Swing I kept getting a Null Pointer Exception and I don't know how to fix it. The Exception happens on line 15 of class Panel (g = image.getGraphics();). Here is the code for my classes. I'm still not finished with the program and I can't finish it until I know that this issue is resolved.
    package Graphics;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    public class DrawFrame extends JFrame{
         public Panel panel;
         public DrawFrame(int x, int y, String s) {
              super(s);
              this.setBounds(0, 0, x, y);
              this.setResizable(false);
              this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
              this.setPreferredSize(getSize());
              panel = this.getPanel();
              this.getContentPane().add(panel);
              panel.init();
              this.setVisible(true);

    The javadoc of createImage() states that "The return value may be null if the component is not displayable."
    Not sure, but it may be that you need to call init() after this.setVisible(true).

  • Null Pointer Exception Error's in WebDynpro Java

    Hi All,
    How Types are coming Null Pointer Exception Error's in WebDynpro Java, Please provide the types.of Errors.
    Ex. Cardinality Type not correct etc...
    Thanks,
    Bye,
    Vijay Hari.

    HI
      Null Pointer Exception can occur in may instances , for suppose
      1) when  you create a Value Node with some attribute which has cardinality , and you have not
      initialized the Node , then it would through  Null Pointer exception ,
      2) when you integrate the RFC and parameters you pass as input to the RFC are not set correctly
          then there could be null pointer when you execute the RFC
      3>or may be when you doesnot bind the node when using webservice then there could be null pointer exception
    and there could be many occurances  for the exception

    Any Idea?

    Hi,
    I am also trying E-mail Activity but I am not able to receive the e-mail.
    I have set the following in the ns_emails.xml
    <EmailAccount>
    <Name>Default</Name>
    <GeneralSettings>
    <FromName>Oracle BPM</FromName>
    <FromAddress>[email protected]</FromAddress>
    </GeneralSettings>
    <OutgoingServerSettings>
    <SMTPHost>Server' IPADRESS</SMTPHost>
    <SMTPPort>25</SMTPPort>
    </OutgoingServerSettings>
    <IncomingServerSettings>
    <SMTPHost>Server' IPADRESS</SMTPHost>
    <SMTPPort>25</SMTPPort>
    </IncomingServerSettings>
    In this "[email protected]" is the user configured and "Server' IPADRESS" is the IPADDRESS of the SMTP server.
    Moreover I have also have SMTP server as the incoming server.
    Now I have a simple BPEL PROCESS having Email Activity of sending a mail.
    The "To" section has "[email protected]".
    I am not able to recive the mail and I have also cheked the SMTP server there is no mail there but BPEL Process runs fine.
    I also have one Script which can send mail to the user Ihave mentioned and it works fine.So server setting seems to be fine.Are there any other setting required.
    If you are able to send the mail then can you give me your inputs on this issue.
    Regards
    Lalit

  • Really frustrating Null Pointer Exception

    Hi I had the day off and was bored so I decided to start work on a poker game. Today I just started making a deck of cards and drawing a random card from it. However it isn't working as I get a very annoying null pointer exception which I don't understand. Anyway I will post my code:
    public class DeckOfCards
         public static void main(String args[])
              Deck daDeck = new Deck();
              Card[] drawnCards = new Card[10];
              for (int i=0; i < 10; ++i)
                   drawnCards[i] = daDeck.DrawCard();
                   System.out.println(drawnCards.getTitle());
    import java.util.*;
    public class Deck
         Suit Hearts;
         Suit Diamonds;
         Suit Spades;
         Suit Clubs;
         public void Deck()
              Hearts = new Suit("Hearts");
              Diamonds = new Suit("Diamonds");
              Spades = new Suit("Spades");
              Clubs = new Suit("Clubs");
         public Card DrawCard()
              System.out.println("Drawing card...");
              Random generator = new Random();
              Card card = null;
              System.out.println("Card variable inited");
              while (card == null)
                   System.out.println("Bleep");
                   switch (generator.nextInt(4))
                        case 0:
                             System.out.println("0");
                             return Hearts.getAvailableCard();
                        case 1:
                             System.out.println("1");
                             return Diamonds.getAvailableCard();
                        case 2:
                             System.out.println("2");
                             return Spades.getAvailableCard();
                        case 3:
                             System.out.println("3");
                             return Clubs.getAvailableCard();
                        default:
                             System.out.println("none");
              System.out.println("Exited while loop");
              return card;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Suit
         Card[] cards = new Card[13];
         public Suit(String suit_)
              cards[0] = new Card("Two", suit_);
              cards[1] = new Card("Three", suit_);

              cards[3] = new Card("Five", suit_);
              cards[4] = new Card("Six", suit_);
              cards[5] = new Card("Seven", suit_);
              cards[6] = new Card("Eight", suit_);
              cards[7] = new Card("Nine", suit_);
              cards[8] = new Card("Ten", suit_);
              cards[9] = new Card("Jack", suit_);
              cards[10] = new Card("Queen", suit_);
              cards[11] = new Card("King", suit_);
              cards[12] = new Card("Ace", suit_);
         public Card getAvailableCard()
              System.out.println("Getting an available card...");
              Random generator = new Random();
              Card card = new Card();
              int randomNo = generator.nextInt(13);
              System.out.println(randomNo);
              if (cards[randomNo].isAvailable())
                   return cards[randomNo];
              return card;
    public class Card
         String strValue;
         String suitName;
         int value;
         int suit;
         boolean available = true;
         public Card()
              strValue = "Out";
              suitName = "cards";
         public Card(String strValue_, String suitName_)
              strValue = strValue_;
              suitName = suitName_;
         public String getTitle()
              String title = strValue + " of " + suitName;
              return title;
         public void setAvailable(boolean available_)
              available = available_;
         public boolean isAvailable()
              return available;
    What the program is meant to do is create a deck of cards, then pick ten cards, randomly picking a suit and card in that suit. If the card has already been drawn ( not available ) then the DrawCard() method should repick a suit and card and try again. The program may be doing something differently to what I have said and may be a bit messy just because I have messed around with things trying to understand why I am getting the exception. This is the exception:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
    at Deck.DrawCard(Deck.java:34)
    at DeckOfCards.main(DeckOfCards.java:13)
    The program doesn't even make it to the first line of the getAvailableCard() method in the Suit Class.
    So all I am asking is can anyone see why I am getting the null pointer exception and what action could I take to fix it. Thankyou to anyone who has read this.

    Figure out what's null.
    Print out cards and then cards[randomNo].
    If those aren't null, then you need to look more closely at the erorr message and put in print statements to find out what is.
    Whatever turns out to be null, you'll need to trace back and figure out why.
    If it's the array, and the array is a member variable, then you need to know that reference member variables are initilaized to null.
    If the array isn't null (because you did cards = new Card[something]) but cards[randomNo] is null, then it's because you didn't do this: for (int ix = 0; ix < cards.length; ix++) {
        cards[ix] = new Card(...);
    }

    try{
            pDAO = new PlacemarkDAO();
            ArrayList pmArray = pDAO.getPlacemarkByRegion(northEastLong,northEastLat,southWestLong, southWestLat);
            if(pmArray!=null && pmArray.size()>0){ //Check if the method pDao.getPlacemarkByRegion return a null to pmArray
                for ( int i=0; i< pmArray.size();i++) {
                    Placemark pm = (Placemark)pmArray.get(i);
                    if(pm!=null){ //check if the instance pm is null
                        String pmId = pm.getPlacemarkid()+"";
                        String pmLat = pm.getLatitude()+"";
                        String pmLong = pm.getLongtitude()+"";
                       out.println("{\"markers\" : [ {\"placemarkid\":, \"latitude\" :, \"longtitude\" :}," +
                                        "{\"placemarkid\" :, \"latitude\":, \"longtitude\" :}," +
                                        "{\"placemarkid\" :, \"latitude\" :, \"longtitude\" :}" +
                    }else{
                       System.out.println("Error in: "+i + " element"); //if pm instance is null then return the element position of the pmArray
            }else{
                System.out.println("pmArray is null");
           catch(Exception e)
               e.printStackTrace();
            out.close();
        }Hmm, anyone can tell me why is it still null ? is it still related to my DAO class? Or i have lacked out something?Can anyone please give me pointers and guide me along?

  • Logging just exceptions and 'critical' TopLink info to the log

    I'm trying to just log exceptions and other 'critical' info that occur within TopLink to the log rather than getting lots of SQL statements, unit of work info etc.
    I'm running TopLink 9.0.3.5 in WebLogic Server 7.0 (SP4) using container managed persistence for Entity Beans.
    If I startup WebLogic with the toplink.log.level=INFO option then I get SQL statements, unit of work info, JTS registration info as well as any exceptions that are logged.
    If I leave the logging like this my WebLogic log will likely be huge and performance degraded from writing a lot of info that will never be used.
    If I startup WebLogic with the toplink.log.level=NONE option then I don't get any log statements, not even exception info (although obviously clients still get the exception stack). I need to get the exceptions and 'critical' TopLink info in the WebLogic log because I cannot rely on getting the information from client logs.
    In the TopLink for WebLogic 2.5.1 product the default logging behaviour was to log only exceptions and other 'critical' info to the log.
    Is there a way to configure TopLink 9.0.3 so that only exceptions and any other 'critical' TopLink information is written to the log (and SQL statements, unit of work info and JTS registration info is not written).
    Thanks.

    You don't mention which version of 10g you have but there is a bug in all versions 10.1.2.0.2 and newer in that usernames are no longer being inserted in the Apache log files when portal pages are viewed. It was somewhat hit or miss before, but good enough to get a feeling of what was being used Now, it does not even provide that. Bug number reference from Metalink is 5638057. It is shown as "Closed -- not feasible to fix", but will be addressed in 11.0
    I am experimenting with getting this data a couple of ways. One, if you happen to use WebTrends, you can manually set the authenticated users field to whatever you'd like so I am using the API's to retrieve the username and the user company (organization) and concatenating them together.
    The other option I am considering is a procedure call in the footer of each page that automatically updates a new table with the session id, username, page, timestamp, and whatever other information you may want each time the page is visited. This table can then be dumped to a data file if desired or left in the database and analyzed using a tool like Discoverer.

  • Null pointer exception in the morning

    Hi all,
    I have built a custom JSP DYN page application that for the most part works ok. However, I've found on occassion that when I arrive in the morning, the application errors out in our dev and qa portal environments with a null pointer exception type error. The error info in the trace log file is below. I've found that if I redeploy a fresh copy of the application to the dev portal server, it makes the problem go away. In our QA environment, if I restart the portal the problem goes away. In other words, I'm not making any changes to the code to make the problem go away. It's like something has gone awry in the portal.
    The trace log file isn't really telling me anything significant. Maybe someone out there has heard of this problem and knows what I'm doing wrong.
    Here's the error info:

  • JAX-WS Client throws NULL Pointer Exception in NW 7.1 SP3 and higher

    All,
    My JAX-WS client is throwing an exception when attempting to create a client to connect to the calculation service. The exception is coming out of the core JAX-WS classes that are part of NetWeaver. (see exception below)
    Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
         at com.sap.engine.services.webservices.espbase.client.jaxws.core.SAPServiceDelegate.createDispatchContextExistingPort(SAPServiceDelegate.java:440)
         at com.sap.engine.services.webservices.espbase.client.jaxws.core.SAPServiceDelegate.createDispatchContext(SAPServiceDelegate.java:475)
         at com.sap.engine.services.webservices.espbase.client.jaxws.core.SAPServiceDelegate.createDispatch(SAPServiceDelegate.java:492)
         at com.sap.engine.services.webservices.espbase.client.jaxws.core.SAPServiceDelegate.createDispatch(SAPServiceDelegate.java:484)
         at javax.xml.ws.Service.createDispatch(Service.java:166)
    I have done some research and it appears that as of NetWeaver 7.1 SP3 SAP stopped using the SUN JAX-WS runtime and implemented their own SAP JAX-WS runtime. I also took the time to decompile the jar file that contained the SAPServiceDelegate class which is throwing the null pointer exception. (see method from SAPServiceDelegate below)
        private ClientConfigurationContext createDispatchContextExistingPort(QName portName, JAXBContext jaxbContext)
            BindingData bindingData;
            InterfaceMapping interfaceMap;
            InterfaceData interfaceData;
            bindingData = clientServiceCtx.getServiceData().getBindingData(portName);
            if(bindingData == null)
                throw new WebServiceException((new StringBuilder()).append("Binding data '").append(portName.toString()).append("' is missing!").toString());
            QName bindingQName = new QName(bindingData.getBindingNamespace(), bindingData.getBindingName());
            interfaceMap = getInterfaceMapping(bindingQName, clientServiceCtx);
            interfaceData = getInterfaceData(interfaceMap.getPortType());
            ClientConfigurationContext result = DynamicServiceImpl.createClientConfiguration(bindingData, interfaceData, interfaceMap, null, jaxbContext, getClass().getClassLoader(), clientServiceCtx, new SOAPTransportBinding(), false, 1);
            return result;
            WebserviceClientException x;
            x;
            throw new WebServiceException(x);
    The exception is being throw on the line where the interfaceMap.getPortType() is being passed into the getInterfaceData method. I checked the getInterfaceMapping method which returns the interfaceMap (line above the line throwing the exception). This method returns NULL if an interface cannot be found. (see getInterfaceMapping method  below)
       public static InterfaceMapping getInterfaceMapping(QName bindingQName, ClientServiceContext context)
            InterfaceMapping interfaces[] = context.getMappingRules().getInterface();
            for(int i = 0; i < interfaces.length; i++)
                if(bindingQName.equals(interfaces<i>.getBindingQName()))
                    return interfaces<i>;
            return null;
    What appears to be happening is that the getInterfaceMapping method returns NULL then the next line in the createDispatchContextExistingPort method attempts to call the getPortType() method on a NULL and throws the Null Pointer Exception.
    I have included the code we use to create a client below. It works fine on all the platforms we support with the exception of NetWeaver 7.1 SP3 and higher (I already checked SP5 as well)
          //Create URL for service WSDL
          URL serviceURL = new URL(null, wsEndpointWSDL);
          //create service qname
          QName serviceQName = new QName(targetNamespace, "WSService");
          //create port qname
          QName portQName = new QName(targetNamespace, "WSPortName");
          //create service
          Service service = Service.create(serviceURL, serviceQName);
          //create dispatch on port
          serviceDispatch = service.createDispatch(portQName, Source.class, Service.Mode.PAYLOAD);
    What do I need to change in order to create a JAX-WS dispatch client on top of the SAP JAX-WS runtime?

    Hi Guys,
    I am getting the same error. Any resolution or updates on this.
    Were you able to fix this error.
    Thanks,
    Yomesh

  • Returning vector and null pointer exception

    Hi, I'm writing a mailing program which so far is working fine, but I have now run into a problem which is completely throwing me. My mailer needs to be able to load multiple attachments - and also to be able to deal with an HTML text which contains multiple images. In each case, what I'm trying to do is to put the attachments and the images into separate vectors and process them through an iterator. The logic, at least, I hope is correct.
    I can get my code to compile but it keeps throwing a null pointer exception a runtime. Somehow, I just can't get it to pass the vector from one part of the code to another.
    Can anyone help me? I've tried various things, none of which seem to work. My code, as it stands, is posted in a skeletal form below.
    Thanks for any ideas:
    public class MailSender
       // declare various variables, including:
         Vector embeddedImages;
         String HTMLString;
        public MailSender()
            setup();
        private void setup()
         //this part of the program sets up the various parts of the mail  (to, from, body etc)
          HTMLString = "blah blah blah";  //sample HTMLString
           Vector embeddedImages = null; //is this correct?
            if (HTMLString.length() > 0)
                processHTMLString(HTMLString);
         private String procesHTMLString(String htmlText)
            Vector embeddedImages = new Vector(); // I construct my vector here, is this correct?
            //Here I process the HTML string to extract the images
            //get the file path of the image and pass it to the vector
            addToVector(imageFile);
            return HTMLString;
        public Vector addToVector(String imageFile)
            embeddedImages.add(imageFile);
            return embeddedImages;
        private void send()
            //this part does the sending of the mail
            //at some part in this method I need to get at the contents of the vector:
            //but this part isn't working, I keep getting a null pointer exception
            Iterator singleImage = embeddedImages.iterator();
            while (singleImage.hasNext())
        public static void main(String[] args)
            MailSender ms = new MailSender();
            ms.send();
            System.out.println("MailSender is done ");
    }

    >>>>while they don't have a clue on how the language and/or programming in general works.
    Thank you, salpeter, for your esteemed estimation of my programming competence.
    >>>What I'm wondering is: how come people always start building applications... blah blah
    The reason being, is that it happens to be my job.
    OK, I'm perhaps slower than most and there are things I don't yet understand but I get paid probably about a tenth of what you do (and maybe even less). I regard it as a kind of apprenticeship which, after a past life having spent twenty years packing crates in a warehouse, is worth the sacrifice. Six months ago I'd never written a line of code in my life and everything I've learned since has been from books, the good people in these forums, and a lot of patient trial and error. It's hard work, but I'll get there.
    I say this, only as encouragement to anyone else who is trying to learn java and hasn't had the benefit of IT training at school and a four year computing course at university paid for by the parents, and for whom the prohibitive cost (in both time and money) of most java courses would never allow them to get on this ladder.
    Excuse my somewhat acerbic posting, but comments such as yours tend to provoke...
    Thank you EverNewJoy for explaining this to me. I haven't had time yet to try it out, but at least the concept now is clear to me.
