Monitor backlight comes on briefly, then blanks out

I'm using a COMPAC PRESARIO laptop that's running WINDOWS XP.  I've had the system 7 years & had a couple viruses that were supposedly cleaned up, but it was done by someone else so I'm not sure of this.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION & CORRECTION EFFORTS TO DATE:
When the computer is turned on the COMPAC logo comes up, but soon blanks out, though not thoroughly on occasion, just goes real dark, with images faintly visible.  Unfortunately, the behavior is not consistent, sometimes not lighting at all, other times as previously described, not visible at all, or visible up to WINDOWS logo page, then blank.  If power is disconnected for 48 hours or better it will sometimes remain visible for a period of time, so long as it doesn't enter hibernation mode, though that trick hasn't worked recently; then the above problems repeat.  I have connected a COMPAC FS7600 monitor to it to see if it is indeed a monitor problem, but that also blanks out after WINDOWS logo displays, prior to reaching log-in stage, the monitor power button going from the green it has while visible to the amber that signals a disconnect (I think).  I've been forced to do hard shutdowns repeatedly, resulting in the "Windows encountered a problem with the last start-up" & have tried the "last working configuration" option, but that hasn't helped, so I'm at a loss on what to try next.
One of the answers here indicated the backlight could be replaced.  If so, how would I go about that if it comes to that?
I am a freelance illustrator & writer, whose work & income depend on a working system, so I'm currently unable to produce the products clients desire; as such, this problem is imperative to correct.  Any & all assistance will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello @darenderer ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're having issues with the display on your notebook going blank.
If the issue persists on an external monitor chances are the issue is not hardware related, though when it goes dim and is barely visible that does sound like a bad backlight which is kind of strange.
We can test this by trying to load the BIOS. If the BIOS loads and displays properly this would tell us the hardware is OK. To access the BIOS tap F10 while the notebook boots up. If this is displaying OK you may need to restore the default BIOS settings which is usually done with F9 while in the BIOS. You should see the keyboard shortcut in the bottom right corner of the screen to confirm this shortcut.
If the BIOS does not display you could be looking at a hardware issue. The issue being intermittent like this might suggest a bad connection to the backlight or display. You can see how to remove and reconnect these connections in the Maintenance and Service guide available in the User Guides section of your products support page here: HP - Drivers & Downloads.
It would help to know which product and operating system you are using. For information on finding your product and model numbers click here: How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? To see which version of Windows you are using click here: Which Windows operating system am I running?
Let me know if this helps!

  • Monitor works for one second, then blank

I have been reading many of the post people have put down about monitors and mac mini's, however can't find anyone with my problem.
I bought a mac mini and a cheap monitor from PC world, a Xerox 17" TFT, thinking that it would work fine. However when I connected them up using the DVI cable, at start up the monitor works for a second then blank. Turning it off and back on again brings the image back but again for just a second. This is annoying in that the mac mini is still in its welcome first run making it difficult to get beyond it to mess around with the monitor settings given a window of a second each time.
There was an adaptor that came with the monitor, but to use that I would have to plug that adaptor into the macs DVI adaptor as well, something I tryed but no luck, in fact no image at all.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I've had this problem too, resetting the PMU and PRAM usually helps:

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

    Macbook Pro:
When I raise the lid after sleeping, the screen comes on momentarily then backs out.  If I close the lid and raise it again, the same thing happens.  It is sometimes necessary to force quit.  Once restarted, there is no problem unless the lid is closed for a short time and the machinge goes to sleep.

Place the iPod Touch into DFU mode.  This will be similar to what the factory would do to install the iOS onto new iOS devices.
Placing it into DFU mode will allow you to "format" and install the current iOS for that device.
To place your iOS device into DFU mode.
First connect you iOS device to you computer.
Open iTunes if not already open
Now turn off your iOS device using the power swipe.
Press the home and sleep button on your iOS device for 10 seconds.
Release the sleep button but carry on holding down the home button.  For another 10 seconds.
Your iOS device should now be on DFU.  Click on restore and iTunes will download the latest iOS for your device.
Hopefully that sorts it if not, you will have to go to a service centre or call Apple Care up and get them to collect it and repair it. (replace it)  Or go into an Apple Store.

  • Vista: Flash CS3 literally flashes then blanks out toolboxes

Something very annoying occurs in Flash CS3, and sometimes
other Adobe products like Photoshop CS3. When pressing down the
mouse button for a while (i.e. when dragging something), Flash
suddenly flashes once and blanks out all toolboxes. Hovering over
the toolboxes makes the items reappear. Minimizing then maximizing
Flash also works, which makes me wonder if Vista's display drivers
are the cause. It happens randomly in Photoshop, but in Flash I can
actually trigger this by holding down the mouse button for a few
    seconds, so
    here's
    a video.
Very very annoying, having to minimize/maximize your
application every five minutes. Any ideas?

I haven't been clicking things fast. It happens when I try to save. It's not random. I've spent a decent amount of time on google and haven't found a solution. There are a lot of results about freezing and crashing, but I haven't found any on freezing due to saving.
I know it should be fine, but that's what's weird about it. It shouldn't be freezing like this and it's at a point where it's not something I can ignore.

  • I have one of the first IPads and an IPad air. I use the old one at school. Last week, the screen went blank on the old IPad. It seems to be frozed. I have tried holding down the wake button and home button. The apple icon shows briefly, then blank

I am wondering if one of the apps from the IPad Air is causing a problem with my old IPad. If it is, How do I correct the problem?

  • Macbook Pro won't start up, white light turns on, then goes out.

My Macbook Pro froze, so I hit the power button, and now it will not turn on.
When I press the power button the white light on the front comes on, and then goes out after about 6 seconds along with that noise it normally makes when turning off. Also if I cover both speakers the light fades.
This used to happen to me pretty regularly, and in the past it seems just a matter of giving it 24hrs and then trying to turn it on and it usually fixes itself by then. But I've started taking on freelance clients so I can't deal with this crap anymore and would like to know why this is happening. I've taken it to Genius's before but by the time I get there it is turning on again, and they have no answers for me.

You could try reseting the PRAM/NVRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379, see section titled "Resetting PRAM and NVRAM") or reseting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).

  • Powerbook backlight - turns on with computer, then goes out

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble with my Powerbook G4's (DVI, 667MHz) backlight.
The problem is this: On power-up, the backlight turns on, then goes out, never to come on again.
I've swapped the inverter and cable, but the problem persists.
    Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello everyone,
I think I might have the same problem. When I open my Powerbook the backlight will turn on for about a second and then turn off. Nothing seemed to help it, it would just return randomly after restarting, letting it rest for a while, plugging into external monitor. I took it to a genuis bar last year and they couldn't figure it out and wanted to send the hard drive to be reformatted. I couldn't part with it so I kept it with the problems.
I figured out that when it's plugged into a power supply it is more likely to shut off. But other than that, I have no idea what it is, and at times it is still random. Does the power supply have anything to do with the inverter board? Sorry for my ignorance, I am not tech savvy.
    Any ideas?

  • Wake from sleep - screen briefly comes on and then goes black

I have a late 2010 mbp 17" model with no issues until last night.
I have my computer plugged in, and when it's not in use I close the display down and the computer enters sleep mode.  When waking it from sleep, the screen will briefly come on and then go black.  After a few opening and closings of the display, the display will remain on - the number of times opening and closing the display varies before it remains on.
An easier solution I just tried is by unplugging the computer from power - the display comes right on and remains that way.
When the display goes out, the keyboard backlight remains lit.
The only thing I recall that would have any sort of adverse affect on this is the static electricity that I had with this yesterday or the day before.  I live in a dry climate and was shocked when I touched the computer the other day.  Nothing really bad, but could this be the culprit?  Again, I have never had any issues like this before.
Is there a solution to this?  Within the energy saver, the settings (except the amount of time before the computer/display goes to sleep) is identical for both powered and battery sources.
    Thank you for any help.
    - Jeff

To add, I have tried the following:
    Open Terminal
    Type the following:
         pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    It should say something like:
         hibernatemode  3
Here's an explanation of the different types of hibernate modes:
0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.
To change your sleep mode, use the following command:
         sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
(replace 0 with whatever hibernate mode you desire)"
Also - the white light that comes on while in sleep mode on the front right of the computer does not fade in and out like it used to...
    Gah, I don't like issues

I'm also out of warranty and i've tried everything... resetting the pram, trying to restart in safe mode, trying to boot from a cd... .NOTHING WORKS!!! i can still control brightness itself but ive never tried attaching to an external monitor. I know everything is loaded correctly... i just don't know whats wrong. If you have any ideas.. please let me know. • MacBook Pro/Thunderbolt Monitor blanking out

I have a MacBook Pro with 2 Thunderbolt monitors.  My system is connected up like this:
MacBook Pro (running in clamshell mode) -------> Thunderbolt Port on MBP -------> Thunderbolt Display ------> Built in Display Thunderbolt Cable ------>Thunderbolt Display 2.
I also have a Thunderbolt disk drive attached to a thunderbolt port on the back of display 2.
I have a couple of problems every now and then.  At times that second display blanks out for a second.  I have noticed, it is most likely to happen when I put some IO on that thunderbolt disk drive.  It just seems to me like the bandwidth of thunderbolt should be able to handle this.
Secondly.  Sometimes when I boot up, the system considers that second display as the first which screws up my screens.  I usually have to reboot to get it to work right.  I notice that if I boot up with my MBP open, the system always considers the 2nd monitor in the chain the first display. Seems like it would always default to the first monitor.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated,
    Rob

The Thunderbolt drive should be the first device on the chain, with the Displays being the last devices on the chain.
That should solve both of the problems.
If not, call back or post in the Apple Thunderbolt Display forum.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Pro 9,1 External Monitor Blanks Out?

I have a 15-inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with a 2.3 GHz i7 processor, which I purchased last December. For some reason my external monitors blank out about 1-3 times per day. As far as I can tell the symptons are not reproducable. It just seems to randomly happen.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what was the solution?
    Thanks!

Are you sure it is not a hardware problem? A bad cable or a poor connection?
I would try this after eliminating hardware causes.
Go to System Preferences / Displays. Verify the settings are correct, and correct or not change them arbitrarily - just move the settings back and forth - and then set them back where you want them.
    Now reset the PRAM:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
