Monitor Calibration & Use Of Smart Fix In PSE 10

Hi,
I have a couple of questions about using PSE 10. First, I have an Iiyama ProLite E2409HDS monitor and it has a setting to put it into sRGB mode which I have read is better for viewing/editing photos. I use my computer for lots of different things such as browsing the net and gaming and so I wondered if I should leave it in the sRGB profile all the time or if I should switch to different profiles depending on what I am doing? It has different modes/profiles such as Internet, Game, Text, Movie etc but I wanted to know if it makes any difference if I put it into one of the other modes while editing photos?
My second question relates to the Smart Fix section of the Quick Edit part of PSE Editor. Normally when I import my new pics from my camera I click on all of the auto buttons for Smart Fix, Lighting, Color, Balance and Sharpness but I wondered if I just need to click only on the Smart Fix auto button? I don't know if Smart Fix incorporates all of the other buttons in one fix or if t's better to use seperate buttons depending on what I want to change.
Thanks for any help people can give.

sRGB is fine. It’s the universal color space for the web, email and home printing. Mst photo labs and shops also use sRGB. If you also set your camera to sRGB you will get total consistency.
Use either Auto Smart fix or the other fix options individually. If you don’t like a look when you’ve applied a fix press Ctrl+Z or the undo button to go back one step.

  • Wrong hues when using Auto Smart Fix

Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 results in wrong hues (ie reds turning orange, blues turning purple, etc) when I use Auto Smart Fix & when I start slideshow. How do I correct this?

This is the trial version w/c comes when you download adobe reader. Anyway I have now solved the problem by rolling back my monitor driver (ViewSonic VA720) to the previous default driver. I have also removed that particular monitor in my color management profile.

  • Auto Smart Fix in PSE 9

    I use PSE 9.0.3.
When I click on Auto Smart Fix, the results I get show way too much saturation. I have to reduce the saturation of every picture by a factor of 30 on the saturation sliding scale of Adjust Hue/Saturation.
Is there a way to correct this?
What is the use of Adjust Smart Fix? The Help files do not contain anything about this button.
    Thanks!

No, unfortunately PSE doesn't allow you to create your own presets the way PS does. Adjust smart fix is a slider which does the same thing as Auto Smart Fix, only you control the amount of change by dragging left for less, right for more.

  • Monitor Calibration using .icm file.....

    Hi There,
I'm really need to calibrate my monitor using a particular .icm file - only thing is, when I copy it into the right folder, it doesn't show up in system preferences.....
I think it needs to be an .icc file for it to work?
Does anyone know how to convert the file?

    Have a read of this:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/colorsync-users/2004/Feb/msg00135.html
My guess: You have a bad file. Go back to the source and get a clean copy. You could try changing the extension to .icc, but it should not be necessary.
In any case, I have to question what you are doing. I'd like to know more details before I throw the book at your for using a 3rd party profile for your particular display. Ideally you should make your own profile for your own particular display. Apple provide a reasonable rough and ready method in the Display preference pane which works fine considering that none of Apple's laptops are capable of showing more than 18 bit color, aka 260,000 colors. The OS dithers the missing colors to fake 'millions of colors'. Essentially, doing quality color calibration and color matching with a MacBook or MacBook Pro LCD display is impossible. The best you will get is a guestimation. Bounce me a note if you would like to talk about it in depth. I used to teach color management.

  • Is monitor calibration the same as setting color profile in System Preferences Monitor Color?

I understand monitor calibration using something llike X-Rite or Gretag, but what about the sRGB/Adobe RGB/Generic thing in System preferences>Monitor>Color? Is the latter for printing purposes? What should I select when doing post processing on Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop Elements?

    {quote:}After working on my photographs in Lightroom and setting them to Jpegs, I take them to a printshop (semi professional). Would the personal setting on my iMac make any differences to him for printing???{quote}
Yes your Display Profile will slightly affect your finished product, but if that RGB profile is working for you then don't try and fix it. However if you do professional or semi professional work, then you might want to consider using professional calibration tools to calibrate your display.

I only do amateur photo work and then print them on an Epson printer. When editing and printing photos, I use the Epson sRGB Display Profile that was installed along with my Epson software and always get great results.

  • Help with monitor calibration - simulating NTSC on computer monitor

I know the proper way to monitor video is using an external NTSC production monitor. Since I don't have one I'm wondering how I can get the closest to simulating an NTSC monitor on my Apple Cinema Display. I have made a monitor calibration using gamma 1.4 that seems pretty good except the shadow areas are too dark. If I can resist the temptation to lighten the dark areas, based on what I see on my computer monitor, my results look pretty good on a TV played from a DVD. If there was some way I could set up my Cinema Display to be closer to an NTSC monitor it would help me a lot. Any ideas?
As a related question: If my video project is not destined for TV but played on a laptop and shown on a screen using a projector maybe I can use my computer monitor as more of a guide to what it will look like on screen.
Another related question: How do the modern flat screen TVs relate to the older CRT variety in terms of calibration. Do the new flat screens still use the same NTSC calibration? The flat screens seem more like computer monitors to me.

If the program won't be viewed on TV, using the computer monitor should be fine ... but keep in mind that Windows system's use a different gamma.

They aren't. They are designed to reproduce the NTSC/ATSC color space and gamma. However, like most later model consumer CRTs, flat panel TVs have built-in circuitry designed to artificially enhance/correct the image. That's the primary reason to use a professional monitor, be it a flat panel or an older CRT.

  • Auto Smart Fix with an adjustment layer?

Is it possible to do an Auto Smart Fix in an adjustment layer? If yes, how is it best done?
    Thank you

What are you trying to accomplish? You always have the option of duplicating the background layer and using Auto Smart Fix on the copy. This isn't exactly the same as an Adjustment Layer, but there is no way to make further adjustments to the Auto Smart Fix anyway, like you could with one of the other Adjustment Layer options.

  • Auto Smart Fix is greyed out

I want to use Auto Smart Fix on a photo, but no matter what format I save the image in, the Auto Smart Fix and Adjust Smart Fix options are greyed out. The Auto Levels, Contrast, Lighting and Color options are available.
How do I get the Smart Fix to work?
    Thanks.

Also check to see if your image is 16 bit. You can't use auto smart fix on a 16 bit image. If that's the case go to Image>Mode and convert it to 8 bits.

  • Can I use "Smart Fix" within Organizer?

I have just purchased PSE 13 and I can't see where you can use "Smart Fix" within Organizer? Does this mean you must go to Editor to use Smart Fix?

Under the "Media" view you should have a button for instant fix (bottom right)

How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.
    the computer:Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.5), 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    the TV: LG Smart tv

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
    • at Startup
    • at wake from sleep
    • when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
    • when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

I have been having a issue with getting the colors on my monitor to match the colors fro my print lab. I now have the monitor calibrated to match the prints but when I open elements it doesn't use the same colors. If i have it use the calibrated profile by changing the color management settings, the color picker no longer shows true white or black. How do I get elements 12 to honor the new calibrated settings?

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

Every single time I power up photoshop CC get an error. says " the monitor profile "acer S201HL" appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software. How do I fix this?

Your factory-supplied monitor profile, associated with your monitor by the operating system, is bad.  It's more common than you'd think.
    To avert the error:
Open the Color Management panel of your Windows operating system.  In the Devices tab, if it is not already listed [ Add... ] the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile and [ Set as default Profile ].
After doing the above, log out of Windows and back in again, just to ensure everything's updated.
Note that the above assumes your monitor is more or less displaying color in the sRGB color space (sRGB is short for sRGB IEC61966-2.1).  For many monitors this isn't a terribly wrong assumption.
If you want to ensure you have the most accurate color, consider buying a calibration and profiling device, which (with its associated software) can set your calibration and generate custom color profiles by doing actual measurements from your monitor.  You'll want to take some time to get your mind around how color-management works, and that is not a trivial task.  It's certainly well beyond what can be taught in a forum post by post.
    Good luck.

  • How to select my custom monitor calibration profile into Lightroom 5.7?  I used i1 Display Pro to calibrate my monitor, I could not find or confirm that Lightroom is using my custom monitor calibration profile? Thank you very much.

How to select my custom monitor calibration profile into Lightroom 5.7?  I used i1 Display Pro to calibrate my monitor, I could not find or confirm that Lightroom is using my custom monitor calibration profile? Thank you very much.

The monitor profile is set at system level. Lightroom will find it there and use it. You're not supposed to do anything, i1 Profiler will do it all for you.
Go here to confirm that the right profile is set as system default (Windows):
