Monitor connected to powerbook. Can I start without opening powerbook?

Hello! We have two powerbooks and they're connected to 20" displays. Is there any way to startup the computers without opening the powerbook? Thanks

Not since the only way to start up is to press the power button... Unless you mean you want to use it in closed lid mode?
You can wake it from sleep and use it closed lid with an external keyboard or mouse.
Or if you just wish to close the lid.. for instance while watching a movie or something then it is possible to change the PMU settings via a terminal command. To prevent the reed switch from triggering sleep.
If you really mean you want to power it on... then i suggest you consider never powering it off in the first place... this may sound stupid if you are windows user and are accustomed to powering down the machine after your done with it.. but OS X is perfectly capable of running the same session for very long periods of time ... even months. Putting the machine into sleep instead of powering down is perfectly ok, it saves time and energy by not having to boot all the time... and causes no strain on your computer (less strain if you consider the boot procedure), only the memory, firmware and various other low power components in between are left on, but other than that the machine is effectively off...
however if leaving it in sleep for long periods e.g. more than a day .. make sure it's plugged in so that it doesn't run out of juice to power the memory ... otherwise youl be booting up again anyway.

  • Can't start without power plugged in. (w/ fully charged battery)

when I don't have the power connected, my MacBook Pro (Intel core duo) won't boot from the battery. But the battery indicator shows it is fully charged. It's a pretty new battery and power supply too. As soon as I disconnect the power, the MacBook Pro shuts down... The battery is charging, according to the indicator in the menu bar of the desktop.
    Any ideas?

Take it in for repair. The battery may be bad or the charger is bad, or some other related hardware problem.

    Hi,
to begin with, i'm dutch so sorry for my bad writing.
    Setup:

I'm having an issue since i changed my networks WANIP because we got a new and better internet line.
Also the new inviroment comes with a new router.
Now here's the problem, since this change i couldn't set up a VPN L2TP connection anymore..
So i looked at the VPN log, but there wasn't any text referring to a VPN L2TP connection. And yes i forwarded ervery port,
UDP 1701,500,4500 and the ESP 50 protocol is forwarded by the cisco router with the standard VPN passtrough option.
The next thing i tried is setting up an PPTP connection, after this i got the error: identity is not accepted. this time the VPN log gives me

When i googled for this problem all the awnsers were based on OD users and my in situation there were only local users.
So i thought if i just add all my users ( 10 local users ) to an OD it should fix my problem but here comes the next thing.
When i tried to configure an Open directory it gives me an error that the OD couldn't finish and to check my network settings.
sudo changeip -checkhostname gives me the right adress, dns seems to be ok. The error that console constantly gives is:
servermgd: servermgr_accounts: got error 5000 trying to auth to local LDAP node
    and
    WARING found KDC certificate
    and
    ntdp: GetConfig: Couldn't open </private/etc/ntp_opendirectory.conf
I'm stuck at this point, never seen this problem before.. someone knows a fix or work around for this??
    thanks in advance

To check the local network for some of the common configuration problems, launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
That'll report some local configuration information and then either no errors detected and no changes required, or it'll point to whatever configuration errors or issues it might detect.  That doesn't catch everything, but it catches the common errors.
FWIW, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are poor choices for the local network, as VPNs are based on IP routing and IP routing gets tangled when the same subnet is used on both ends of the VPN. 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are near ubiquitous in home networks and coffee shops.

I agree with Graeme43. NateyBoy, you should definitely try putting your laptop to sleep, as opposed to always shutting it down. For years my family always shut down our Macs when we were through with them, as opposed to just letting them sleep. Today's computers are designed to be left on, and will not be damaged by doing so. In fact, constantly having to boot up may create more wear and tear than just leaving your computer on. Not to mention, it definitely slows productivity time! Also, per your question, you will gain control over your PowerBook by doing so. Whereas you can't start up your laptop with your keyboard, you definitely can wake it up. Hope this helps!

  • Second iMac as external monitor; Connection via firewire without a deck/cam

Second iMac as an external monitor; Connection by firewire without a deck/camera possible?
I spend a lot of hours to find an answer to the following question, unfortunately without any success:
I’m working with a new iMac (Intel, OS 10.4.11) and Final Cut. Additionally I have an old iMac (G3, OS 10.3.9).
I would like to use the FireWire port to transport a dv video stream from the new iMac/Final Cut to the old one so that the old one can be used as a monitor. So all I want is a software for the old iMac that shows an incoming FireWire dv-stream as a live picture.
I tried vlc, videoviewer, iMovie, Vidi and btv. The problem is always the same: Final Cut (on the new iMac) does not find any FireWire/dv-device nor do all these software on the old iMac find a connection to Final Cut. I think the problem is that both sides are seeking for a device-setup at the FireWire-port on the other side. And none of them sends a signal like „yes I’m here and waiting for a dv-stream“.
Another attempt was ScreenRecycler with VNC-client on the old iMac. Unfortunately on my old iMac Os 10.3.9 is the last possible OS and no vnc client on that system is fast enough to show a video in real time.
I also tried virtualDV from Apples FireWire SDK 20. It works so far, that it claims to be a dv-device (on the old iMac) and so Final Cut at the new iMac says: „okay I’ll deliver you that stream“. The problem now is that virtualDV only can record that stream, not show it in real time.
Is there any solution like virtualDV that shows a live preview and turns the iMac in a FireWire dv-device?
Is there any solution that Final Cut simulates to be a FireWire dv-device itself and that another computer finds that device and understand the dv-stream?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Don't think this is possible.
You're better off using a DAC (for example the one made by Canopus) and put your DV in and get a compatible signal out the other end for connection to your monitor.
I don't understand why you would want to go through a computer first, it would be a waste of time and add a huge delay to the signal.
Finally, I wouldn't use a computer monitor as an external display, it would be useless in my experience. Why not just preview on the one you've got by going full screen in FCP? Also using a computer monitor as a preview/output monitor is not a good idea since it's so different from a normal TV and won't show the correct colour space or issues such as flickering and interlace problems, underscan etc etc.
Seems like you're using a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut and that would be to use a DV camera via firewire and then connect up a monitor from that. (again using a convertor box if you have a connection problem.)

  • Just purchased USB SuperDrive to connect MacBook air can't eject start up disc

just purchased USB SuperDrive to connect MacBook air can't eject start up disc? please advise

No, of course not. The "startup disk" is the disk with your boot volume (operating system) on it. Once you boot (startup) from it it is locked as your computer will not "run" without a valid "startup disk".
It would be similar to complaining that "I can't remove the engine from a running vehicle".

  • Helix can't boot without a 2nd monitor attached

    Hi,
I maintain a Helix (36984RU) that gets used for presentations.  It will not boot to Windows without a second monitor attached.   I can hear the fan spin up and the unit gets warm, but the screen remains blank.  The only thing I can do is to shutdown by holding down the power button.
When booting with a 2nd monitor or projector attached, the startup Lenovo logo appears on the 2nd screen and the laptop screen remains blank.  When the Windows login screen appears, it appears correctly on the laptop screen.  I've checked the Windows Screen Resolution page and it correctly shows the laptop monitor as the primary monitor.
This issue presents itself whether or not I disconnect the 2nd monitor prior to shutdown/restart, or whether I remove the 2nd monitor before restart.  It also does not make a difference if I start in tablet or docked mode.
I've updated the BIOS to version 1.29 and have checked that the boot display device is set to Thinkpad LCD, and not either of the two displayport options.
Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

I don't know what it is - I have Enable Transmit on the Program monitor to enable it to do so, and I can't go back to 7.0 or 6.0 as I'm now working on projects in 7.0.1 and don't want to keep chopping and changing.

  • [SOLVED] KF5/Plasma won't start without external monitor

I have connected an external monitor through HDMI, it works fine in plasma5, the only problem is, if HDMI isn't connected I can't start Plasma 5. I just attached the monitor again, disabled it in the setting (the monitor stopped showing any display, but now Plasma gives black screen if HDMI is not connected, but if HDMI cable is connected the laptop screen would turn on just fine.
I have tried removing the kwinrc and all plasma* from ~/.config but to no avail.
    How can I reset it?
P.S: I created a new 'test' user, and Plasma works fine with it, so it's not an installation problem but a configuration problem.

Ya, I run dual monitors on a single nvidia card and on about every second or third reboot, I would end up loging into mirrored screen 1. I would have to disable compositing, reset screens in nvidia-settings, then re-enable compositing. Someone else was complaining about the artifacting and said he cured it by removing those two applications. I figured I could skip the disable and enable of compositing and was pleasantly surprised to find that it also cured the mirrored screen issue too.

Did you use the latest backup after setting it up "as new device"? If yes, try again, this time without using the backup, maybe it contains damaged data causing your problem.
If this does not bring any change, you should get it serviced.

  • [SOLVED] x11vnc without monitor connected

How to start correctly x11vnc (or eventually vncserver) without monitor connected?
    In the wiki is written
"Note: By default, Xorg needs to be able to detect a monitor and will not start otherwise. A workaround is to create a configuration file such as the example above and thus avoid auto-configuring. A common case where this is necessary is headless system, which boots without a monitor and starts Xorg automatically, either from virtual console and login, or using a display manager."
However this is not working in mycase. I cannot connect to previuosly configured x11vnc if monitor is detached. X is not starting. I am sure that the driver is right.
This is a system with LXQt desktop and sddm.

The dummy config file found in the wiki worked fine for me for the xserver itself (just make sure to pick the resolution(s) you want), but not all display managers worked correctly (GDM in particular is a problem, but I've had trouble with others).  I've been able to use x11vnc on headless systems ranging from 5th generation i7's to raspberry Pis, so it's definitely possible.
It would help if you could provide your xorg.conf.d configuration, and your X or VNC logs so we could see what the issue is.
Try disabling your display manager and rebooting without a monitor attached, starting x manually via ssh, and then exporting the DISPLAY before starting x11vnc. For example try running the following lines interactively from the console via ssh.
    startx &
    export DISPLAY=:0
    xrandr --fb 1920x1080
x11vnc --fbauth /path/to/password -display :0 -geometry 1920x1080 auth guess -forever -bg
Make sure to pick a mode (resolution) that's supported in your configuration files, etc. Those commands should give you copious error messages if they fail, which will give us a place to start.
As an aside, if all you want is a vncserver, tigervnc will work with much less fuss because it creates a virtual display so you don't need to mess with your xorg settings at all.  x11vnc (without addins) relies on your system's literal physical display output device, which is what necessitates all the xorg fiddling.  The only reason to use x11vnc is if you need to remote control an actual screen (which doesn't sound like your use case) or if you need the desktop you're VNCing into to have hardware acceleration for some reason.  Tigervnc will "just work" in most setups without significant additional configuration.

    Hello waitingone,
please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
    1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
    2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
    3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
    4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
    5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
    6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
    7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.
    Good luck!
    Hans-Günter
