Monitor Dell Powerconnect Switches/Routers using SCOM 2012

Hello,
We are trying to find a way to monitor approximately 20-25 Dell Powerconnect switches/routers (models 5324,5424,5448,5548,6224,6024) through SCOM 2012.
Using SCOM network discovery we are able to get all Dell Powerconnect switches listed, but we are unable to get a network node dashboard, nor vicinity view 1 or 2 hops further. We are able to only see connected network printers and some serial/ethernet devices
we have.
In addition, SCOM 2012 seems to be able to recognize the model of only Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches. We have found that on the SCOM management server the "C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\Operations Manager\Server\NetworkMonitoring\conf\discovery\oid2type_Dell.conf"
only lists Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches as well as several models from the 3000 series.
We have contacted Dell PRO support, but their reply was that there is no management pack for SCOM available for their networking devices.
Would it be recommended to use http://xsnmp.codeplex.com/ on SCOM 2012 to monitor those switches and get a network digram view or are there any plans to include those MIBs in a future CU or SP of SCOM 2012?

Hi Alex
Network monitoring has changed from SCOM 2007 R2 to SCOM 2012 so this statement
"but if this works for SCOM 2007, it should apply to SCOM 2012"
is not accurate when it comes to network monitoring:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/10/24/migrating-operations-manager-2007-network-monitoring.aspx
Would it be recommended to use http://xsnmp.codeplex.com/ on SCOM 2012?
The codeplex solutions for SCOM 2007 R2 will not work on a new \ clean install of SCOM 2012 (if you upgrade from SCOM 2007 R2 they continue to work as legacy devices but you can't add more monitoring).
SCOM 2012 seems to be able to recognize the model of only Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches
What do you mean by recoginse? SCOM can discover network devices but there is an "approved" list that allows for extended monitoring:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26831
You should still be able to discover and monitor other devices though:

  • Is it possible to use SCOM 2012 R2 with the new Azure Managment Pack to monitor Aure Wadlog Events for azure sdk 2.5

My operations team has been using MOM 2007 and has recently migrated to SCOM 2012 R2.
Till now we are using Monitoring Pack management packs which were released way earlier (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11324),
and had a dependency on diagonstics connection string being present in the cscfg of Azure package.
This pack was allowing us to monitor the wad logs and events generated by applications.
However we plan to move to newer Azure managemen pack (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38414), which allows for discoverability.
    I have 2 questions -
Is it possible to monitor Diagonstics Event Log with the new Monitoring Pack released on 10/2014 ? Or will the users still require the earlier pack for monitoring diagnostics installed in parallel ?
Azure SDK 2.5 got rid of diagonstics connection string. Is there any possible way to Monitor of Azure Diagonstics wadlogs using SCOM 2012 R2
    Thanks,
    Pratush

    Hi Pratush,
I would like to suggest you go through the management pack guide to get details. And you should be able to create custom monitor to monitor event logs for Azure.

  • Options for monitoring health of SCSM 2012 SP1 using SCOM 2012 SP1

    Hi,
I've done some research on how to monitor SCSM using SCOM (version 2012 SP1 for both) and found two options:
Option 1 - Agent-based monitoring. With SCSM2012 SP1, it looks as though the agent is
already present (for upgrades and also for fresh installs). So it follows that SCOM will be able to monitor the health of SCSM.
Option 2 - Agentless monitoring. On the Technet
download page, 'System Requirements' section indicates compatibility with SCOM 2012 and above, and SCSM 2012 and above. Details tab says the following (emphasis mine):
This System Center Management Pack for System Center 2012 - Service Manager should be used to monitor
System Center 2012 - Service Manager, System Center 2012 R2 - Service Manager
and includes monitors for the management server as well as the Data Warehouse server. In this release of the management pack, the Data Access Service, Health Service, Configuration Service, and workflows are monitored.
So it looks like both options are viable, but I'd be interested in hearing other people's experiences of using one vs. the other. Is there any major difference in the information that's provided by agentless vs. agent-based monitoring, or are they just two
different ways of pulling the exact same information into SCOM?
Edit: Just occurred to me that SP1 isn't explicitly mentioned in the Technet article linked above under option 2. Has anyone successfully used agentless monitoring on SP1?

  • Can I Monitor Xamp(apache) hosted web service(OpenEMR) using scom 2012 sp1

i have installed OpenEMR using xamp(apache, mysql) and now i want to monitor what are the various that has been done by the OpenEMR webisite on my local machine, can any one just help to finding out these things.

    Hi,
Based on my research, this software can be installed as service or not as service, if it is installed as service, then we can use SCOM to monitor the service status. And if it is not installed as service, to monitor it, we may need to analysis logs written
    by this software.
And if you want to know what this software did to your computer, I think this should be known by the software vendors, you may need to post thread there. And what I can tell is that we can monitor the computer healthy therefore to know whether something
is wrong with the computer, and then analysis the issue to know whether it is caused by the software.

  • Guide to productively use SCOM 2012 ?

    Hello everyone,
I am having a hard time trying to find what to do with the SCOM 2012 R2 UR4 installation I have done. I personally think that SCOM has a very steep learning curve. Seems to me one needs a PhD degree in rocket science to be able to fully use SCOM!!
Other monitoring tools like (spiceworks) are so very easy to setup and use.
I wish someone could tell me (in plain words) what is the sequence of things a SCOM admin should do to be productive.
Is there a guide out there?
Here are some of the questions I still have in my mind:
I have SCOM installed, now what?
I am supposed to install agents on all my 150+ servers or just a few?
How can I make sure SCOM watches over the servers? (warn me for simple things like disk space, CPU pegged etc)
Create dashboards on a wall mounted display?
Here is what I have been able to do until now...done the installation.... started monitoring a couple of web applications...you know... basic website is up/down notifications. But I wanna do more.
    Please help me!

SCOM is a sophisticated monitoring tool and has a easy setup and use characteristic.
    1) Built up SCOM infrastructure: SCOM Managment Server, DB Server, SCOM console and SCOM reporting
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2013/10/18/opsmgr-2012-r2-quickstart-deployment-guide.aspx
    2) Deploy SCOM Agents to machines which you want to monitor: In your situation, i recommend that you should deploy SCOM agent to 150+ server by using discovery method
    http://prajwaldesai.com/installing-scom-agent-on-windows-based-computers/
    3) Deploy rquired MP:In your situation, it is recommend that Windows OS MP should be installed and the latest version should be downloaded from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/download/details.aspx?id=9296
    4) Create dashboards:http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/09/27/introducing-operations-manager-2012-dashboards.aspx
    5) If you want to receive email alert in addition to SCOM alert, you should configure email notification and subscription:http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2012/04/28/opsmgr-2012-configure-notifications.aspx
    6) Tunning threshold for your environment
There are serveral built-in performance based monitors in Windows OS MP which need you attention. By deafult, Windows OS built-in monitors threshold is good but may not fit your company requirement which you should change it vale by using override
       a) Disk space monitor:
          - Windows XXX Logical Disk Space monitor:
            System Disk:
Warning: free space below 10% and 500MB

  • Monitoring services on MSMQ cluster with SCOM 2012

    Hello guys,
I'm looking a way that SCOM 2012 is able to monitor several services installed on MSMQ cluster. I think it's possible that SCOM 2012 can generate alert through the message queuing service associated to these services but this is an indirect monitoring. I
would want that SCOM generates the alert for the specific service in problem.
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you very much.

  • Office 365 Monitoring using SCOM 2012 R2

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43708
We have imported MP for O365 and added the new subscription (with Global Administrator permissions using Office 365 admin )after that we got an alert like below:
     Connection to EndPoint Service failed
Any idea what would be the issue here?
    Sengo

    Hi,
It's the correct page response "EndPoint not found", if you try to access the  https://office365servicehealthcommunications.cloudapp.net/shdtenantcommunications.svc
    page.
The blank username and passwords are Ok as well, but be careful to edit your credentials from the subscription page, as they are not changed in this case in the Office365 Run As Account, looks like a bug. Therefore, edit them only through
the Accounts menu, or create a new subscription.
The management pack communicates exactly to the mentioned above page only, it's not possible to use IPs, as they could be changed at MS servers side. The host should be whitelisted in case if you have firewalls\proxy. At the same time, depending
on your network\proxy\subscription configurations, possible issues could exist because of certificates and authorization at different levels.
In case of proxy - the Office 365 Proxy Run As Account should be configured. It's automatically created during installation of MP, but the account with Internet access should be added there. Take in attention that using the Office365 Run As
Account does not work out. Therefore the separate Windows account should be created and used as the Office 365 Proxy Run As Account, even if it's the same as the Office365 Run As Account. When using the proxy account, one of the Monitoringhost.exe
processes works under this account. If the proxy account is not configured, this process works under the system account. The proxy account was not documented in Office365 MP manual.
Don't change the default name of created Office 365 Run As accounts, somehow it affects the connection monitor.
    Hope it helps :)
    Natalya
    Hi Natalya,
Thanks for this post. Indeed my SCOM server is behind a proxy. Let's say my Office 365 account is called "SCOM.O365" - it appears under Administration - Accounts under Basic Authentication, with the "friendly" name of "Office 365
Run As Account_xxxxx". Do you mean I create a second account under "Windows" (it would be Active Directory based) also called "SCOM.O365" that the MP will use for proxy, and the MP will automatically run MonitoringHost.exe with this
    AD account?
    thanks!

  • SCOM 2012 monitoring IIS - windows updates generate SCOM alerts

We are using SCOM 2012 to monitor our environment. There is a logic implemented to suppress alerts (using maintenance mode) when Windows Updates cause system reboot.
    We followed:<o:p></o:p>
    http://operatingquadrant.com/2009/08/15/scom-automatically-starting-maintenance-mode-when-servers-are-rebooted-for-patching/<o:p></o:p>
Basically when in system event log event id 1074 appears then system is put in Maintenance mode. There is a problem with some IIS web servers - they
generate a lot of alerts when Windows Updates are installed (e.g. Microsoft Windows Internet Information Services 2003 Application Pool is Unavailable)
and before windows reboot. In details:
5:08 AM - Windows update installation in event log (event id 19)e.g.
Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 x86 (KB2972106)
5:09 AM - SCOM generates alerts: Microsoft Windows Internet Information Services 2003 Application Pool is Unavailable
5:17 AM - event id 1074: The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of computer. SCOM put this server in Maintenance mode.
After 5:17 AM no more alerts generated by SCOM
We cannot change our logic and put system in maintenance mode based on event ID 19 (windows update installation) because there are a
lot of event ID 19 events generated almost every day. So we do not want to put our server in maintenance mode each time when windows updates are installed. Just when windows update installation cause some IIS features stops. Any idea?

  • Services monitored by SCOM 2012

    Hi All,
I am using SCOM 2012 SP1 in our environment. I am a bit puzzled about what all services of a windows server are monitored by default in SCOM. I am asking this because recently we have WinRM service stopped on a windows server but no alert get generated in
SCOM. Does I need to manually set up monitoring for this service?
    Regards,
    Daya

    Hi,
The System Center Management Pack for Windows Server Operating System provides the fundamental monitoring basics for computers.
From what I can see, the WinRM service is not monitorred by default.
And I would like to suggest you also download the MP guide for Operating System management pack to get more details:

  • SCOM 2012 SP1 SQL Server 2008 R2 Clustering Monitoring?

We have a new print management system that was setup using SQL server 2008 R2 clustering.  Right now we have SQL MP (monitoring)(discover) 6.3.173.1.  They had a failover occur a week ago and SCOM didnt throw any alerts.  As a temporary
fix, I found some correlated events and setup a monitor for those events on the servers.  However, the system owner wants to know if there is a MP that will monitor for a SQL cluster failover event.  I have looked and looked and cant seem to find
anything that gives a whole lot of detail on this.
    Thanks

Yes, you can monitor SQL Cluster 2008 using SCOM 2012 SP1. but you need to install SQL MP and Windows Cluster MP and Enable proxy Agent on physical nodes.

  • Manage DPM servers, running DPM jobs, etc from SCOM 2012 SP1

    Hi,
    Little background about our systems.
We have a dedicated SCOM 2012.
We have 22 DPM servers, DPM 2010 and DPM 2012 (we are upgrading to 2012 SP1, we have customers that still using Windows 2003 servers) to be managed by SCOM
We have a few DPM servers that are not located on the same domain as the SCOM server (untrusted domain).
    Some problem we have
    1. When we try to manage the DPM servers from the SCOM server.
From SCOM 2012 server I can “Manage DPM server” that are located in our domain but I cannot manage DPM servers located on untrusted domains (customer’s domains). I receive the below error message
"Unable to connect to <untrusted domain DPM SERVER> ID: 948
Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer"
I guess it’s because the account that I’m using to run SCOM server located in our domain and does not have the permission to open the DPM console on the untrusted domain. So I wonder if it is possible to use “RUN AS profiles/accounts”
to solve this issue, and how?
    2. I have installed SCOM 2012 Operations Manager Console on my computer and then installed DPM Central Console.
When I select one dpm server (from my computer), that is on our domain, and then click “Manage DPM server” I got this error message
"Unable to connect to <our domain DPM SERVER> ID: 33333
    1. Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer (YES)
    2. Verify that the current user has been added to at least one of the roles in Operations Manager. (YES)
    3. Open Operations Manage console and then try launching the DPM Console (THAT IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO)
    4. If you have re-imported the management pack recently, the role configuration may be corrupt. Open the DPM-specific roles and check if the roles have task assigned to them. If not, delete the roles and recreate the...."
When I click on “Get more information” I get this error message.
"You don´t have access permission to connect to the System Center Data Access service on <SCOM SERVER>. Please check if it is a permission issue".....
Do you know why I cannot connect to any DPM server on our own domain?
Why do I get access permission error on my computer but not on the SCOM server (using the same account)?
What should we do to be able to connect to DPM servers that are on untrusted domain?
    3. Is it possible to see Last Recovery Point date/time in SCOM alerts?
For me it is the first thing I look at. If it has failed 10 min ago it is not critical.
But if it is a date and time more than 1 day old, then it is critical.
I hope someone can help us with this
    Br
    SvBoho

    Hi,
To manager DPM, I think we may need to add the account to local admin group of the DPM server.
In addition, to connect to DPM the user needs permissions to DPM/SQL Server DPMDB.
For your DCs, have your enabled agent proxy option? If not, please enable that option for all DCs.
To monitor DPM with SCOM, please also go through the below links:

  • SCOM 2012 Operations Manager Failed to start a process

We have recently upgraded from SCOM 2007 to SCOM 2012. We are not getting a great deal of “Operations Manager Failed to start a process”. The process varies including:
    DiscoverSQL2008ASDiscovery.vbs
    DiscoverSQL2008DBEngineDiscovery.vbs
    DiscoverSQL2008ASDiscovery.vbs
    Microsoft.Windows.Server.NetwokAdapter.BandwidthUsed.ModuleType.vbs
I have researched and researched. I know that you can try to run the scripts locally on the machine but it seems the scripts never make it to the machine. I go to the path in the error, no luck. I look in the other folders as I know that SCOM moves the scripts,
and I even search the entire C drive but the scripts are not getting to the server. The folder is not even making it. For example:
    Command executed: "C:\Windows\system32\cscript.exe" /nologo "Microsoft.Windows.Server.NetwokAdapter.BandwidthUsed.ModuleType.vbs" SERVER true Working Directory: C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager\Agent\Health Service State\Monitoring
    Host Temporary Files 11606\1759\
The script is not there and the folder \1759 is not there either.
I have removed and reinstalled the client.
Antivirus is fine, up to date and not blocking on any of the machines.
I have stopped the “System Center Management service” and renamed the “Health Service State” folder and it recreates fine but not long after I get the warning in SCOM about “Operations Manager Failed to start a process”.
I look in event viewer for Operations Manager on this particular one and I see a lot of:
Performance data from the Health Service could not be collected since required registry keys could not be read, the error was 2L (The system cannot find the file specified.). Event ID 6001.
    I tried the fix of
"lodctr MOMConnectorCounters.ini" and "lodctr HealthServiceCounters.ini" but I get “error
encountered while updating text in registry. Status: 0”. Again I am using SCOM 2012.
Do I need to look at each failed script or is there a overall issue because the scripts are not making it to the machines. Any ideas?

I guess you might need to run "mofcomp sqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof".
