Monitor flickering / flashing to black

One of our Mac Pros has developed this random flicker, where a horizontal part of the screen will go black for a tenth of second.
It's a Mid 2010 Mac Pro with a Radeon 5770 1024MB video card. The monitor is a Viewsonic VG2228 connected via DVI cable.

I've swapped the cable and made sure the connections where solid, but I don't have any spares to swap monitors or video cards. I'm not sure what else to try. Any ideas?

swap displays with another workstation.
swap display cards with another workstation.
run Apple hardware test (although false negatives are common, positive results of 'failed' are dependable.

  • External Disply flickers and went Black for a short duration after yosemite update 10.10.2

    hi,
i got a mac book pro late 2008 and since todays update my external monitor flickers and went black for a short duration.
It seems that it happens, when i start a new app or i move a window across the displays.
Disabling the automated scaling of the resolution reduced the flickering but it still happens.
Does anyone faces the same problems and have an idea how to fix it?
    I would appreciate it.
    Sincerely
    Lukas

    Hello lukasfromholzwickede,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you've noticed flickering on your external display after updating OS X Yosemite.
I'd recommend starting with these resets to troubleshoot the situation:
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
You can find these steps in this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
If the behavior continues, try going through the steps in the "Update your software and firmware" and "No video or no signal, image distortion, 'snow,' or flickering" sections of this article, as well.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • Monitor flickers to black

Every once in a while, my monitor will show some black lines flickering across the screen and turn black for a few seconds. It then flashes black for a few minutes and goes away. This started about 1-2 months ago and happens once a week or once every other week. I have not noticed a correlation between cell phone usage or other interference. Any ideas?

I guess it's good we're not hearing a litany of complaints on the subject : )
Can anyone with a black or white MacBook confirm that they are able to use the mini-DVI-to-DVI adaptor with external monitors with none of these flickering issues?

  • My secondary monitor flashes and blacks out after the 10.7 install.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have installed 10.7 and the secondary monitor flashes and blacks out.  I downgraded back to 10.6 and the problem went away.  I reinstalled 10.7 and the same problem happened again.  The monitor blacks in and out especially when the pointer is placed in the dock area, but it still happens all the time.  My secondary monitor is a ViewSonic 22 inch that is connected to a DVI to display adapter.  Any solutions??
    Thanks

Talked to AppleCare and it's most likely the fact that my MacBook has 3.0 USB ports and my non official charging cable can't support that. So yeah, I'll try a new cable, hopefully that's the fix.

  • Monitor flickers with green tint

Monitor is about 3 years old. Often times, the screen takes on a blue-green tint. Sometimes just flashes on, then back to normal a few times.  Sometimes tint stays for a minute or two. All images are visable, but everything has a strange greenish cast to it.

    Hello @snelson600,
I have read your post on how your desktop's monitor flickers with a green tint, and I would be happy to help you!
I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try a different cable connecting your monitor to your computer
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Video drivers issue (dual DVI monitors off bay :: one black and white and one color)

    Hello,
I have tried everything to try to make these two monitors color. They are both relatively new Dell monitors. Both are DVI, both are connected to the latest Lenovo bay for my T430 laptop. Both worked fine after I initially installed both video drivers (Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 7 [64-bit]) and NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver for Windows 7 [64-bit]). Then out of nowhere one of them (Dell 1) decides it wants to be seen in black and white! I initially thought it was the monitor itself, but when swapping monitors (Dell 1, Dell 2) the other monitor  (Dell 2) went black and white when plugged into the DVI formerly used by the Dell 1 monitor. Ok, so now it must be the DVI ports on the bay station (Lenovo) right? Nope. I had a tech bring me a second, brand new bay (identical). Same issue! So this leads me to the video drivers...
Does anyone have any idea. I disabled each driver and reenabled each to no avail. The drivers are the latest drivers downloaded directly from Lenovo's site. Checked the driver settings/monitor setting using both Windows 7 Professional and Nvidia to see if anything stood out. Nothing.
Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thank you in advance! :~)

I got a new laptop and when I plugged it into my docking station the external monitors were all in black & white.  My old computer still worked fine without changing any settings on the monitors.  I found that I needed to go into Control Panel \ NVidia Control Panel \ Display \ Adjust Desktop Color Settings, then select the monitor I wanted to adjust, then set the slider up for Digital Vibrance.  For some reason on the new laptop the NVidia settings defaulted to 0 for this.

  • Audio not working / Video flashes to black every ~5 seconds

Hi. For some reason, when we turn on our TV as of late, every channel is having this issue where upon turning on, the video will flash to black every 5 seconds or so, and there is no audio. The only thing that solves the problem is unplugging and replugging in the STB (Motorola QIP7232-2).
I've replaced the HDMI cable with a new one. No dice.
Netflix via the X360 works without a hitch, so it's not the TV.
Scanning for repair/errors on the STB comes back with no issues detected.
Any reason why this is happening, and is anyone else experiencing this?

    Ed_Krayer wrote:
I am having the same issue. Unplugging and repowering on resolve the issue, also disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable fixes it. Output from the 7232 goes to a Sony Google TV device. I also have DirecTV and never had this issue. Seems like an HDMI switching problem. Is there an easier way to reset the 7232 than just unplugging it? Or - better yet - what's the cause and how do I resolve?
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try on your own for the problematic STB.
From your FiOS TV remote, go to:
Menu -- Customer Support -- In Home Agent -- Reboot STB
Menu -- Customer Support -- In Home Agent -- Set Top Box Auto-Correction

  • HDMI Monitor flickers

I have an VGA Monitor connected via adaptor to the HDMI port as a second Monitor to my Thunderbolt display. The VGA Monitor flickers and it was suggested to upgrade the firmware. But the system tells me the firmware is not for my system (Mac mini Model A1347 from autumn 2011).
How can I fix this problem?

    What monitor(s)...?
If one has (Digital) DVI input, then you should use it on the HDMI port with the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI adapter and a good DVI cable.
If both have (Digital) DVI input, then it would be best if the second one was also on a Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter instead of analog VGA.

  • Monitor went temporarily to black and white with green tint

Last night when I turned on my computer my monitor showed only a black and white picture with an overall green tint. I restarted it, but the same. This morning, however, it is back to normal. The strange thing is that my house lights seemed to be dim, too. (I thought it was just me until I turned on my computer). Is this a sign that my monitor may be failing, or some kind of fluke?

It is, but only with a lot of compositing.
In FCP this would be doable with garbage mattes, but you'd need the 60 point one from Paul Crisp...and that wouldn't be fun.
In After Effects, you'd have to mask everyone else, and again, keyframe.
Shake might do this well, and it is on the cheap now. But it has a HUGE learning curve. And I have no doubt that even with Shake you are looking at a frame-by-frame manipulation.
Good effects aren't easy to pull off.

  • Monitor flickers

    Greetings,
I have a new mac mini with 16 mb memory, 2 T hd and acer 24" monitor connected to the DVI to usb connection. Latley and from some unknow reason , the monitor flickers every once and a while.
Is there an issue with the mac mini? Or the video card in the mac mini? Or is there some issue with the monitor compatibility?
    Cheers,

  • Computer Monitor Flickers

My computer monitor flickers if we tap it on the side it stops, then starts up again, sometimes we go hours and not problem, other times it drives us nuts, We have a  Gateway computer, it works fine except for this monitor problem, it was purchased in 2004,  it has  a "nvidia GE Force 2 MX 400 video card, I checked with Nvidia and tried downloading the latest driver but then the computer wouldn't start so I had to go back to a previous date so that the computer would start, do I need to look at getting a new monitor? IF so what sort of monitor would be best, someone said the resolution would not be good on a wide screen, but the only ones I have found at Best Buy and other places are the wide screens.   I hope someone can  suggest a solution so we can enjoy this second computer and stop hitting the monitor
    thanks Lea

I'm having a similar flickering problem with the LG widescreen LCD monitor which came with our first Vista computer (an HP desktop, purchased about a year after Vista came out).  It mostly only seems to flicker when I'm playing games with animations in the graphics (such as Civilization IV or Astral Masters).  The most common suggestion I found (f.ex. in the HP Help & Support area preinstalled on my computer) was to increase the refresh rate.  Doing this has not eliminated the flickering, but has lessened the severity somewhat (it just flickers as vertical lines or bars at 75hz; at the default of 60hz it flickered as both vertical and horizontal lines).  I ran HP's Monitor Diagnostic Tool (which included a simple wireframe animation), and it didn't turn up any problems.
Hockeycanuckjc's suggestions sound pretty practical, and I'll try them.  I've also seen on another thread on this board that Nvidia graphics cards (my HP computer has an Nvidia Geforce 8500GT) can have issues with the drivers, especially after Windows Vista has just automatically downloaded its latest updates -- so it's possible that the graphics card driver could be getting cranky (though I haven't yet confirmed or denied that theory in regard to my own computer).
I think my HP computer is still covered under its Extended Service Plan (though I'd have to check the sales receipt to be sure), but I want to do as much troubleshooting as I can before calling Best Buy tech support, so I'll be able to explain my problem more knowledgeably, and hopefully not have to jump through as many hoops as usual before they authorize an in-home service call.

  • Lenovo Monitor Flickers constantly

    Hi All,
I have a Lenovo L197 Wide connected to a Server 2003 box (also lenovo) and the monitor flickers constantly. The refresh rate is set to default and I can't change it to see if it has any effect.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Cheers
    Andy.

    welcome to the forum.
are you using fluorescent lights nearby?   if so, does the monitor still flicker with the light(s) turned off?
have you tested the monitor on another computer, with a different cable, with a different video card, or a different monitor altogether with the server 2003 machine to eliminate any variables?
if the above checks out then your L197 either has a defective inverter or its backlight is failing.   warranty is your best option in this case.

  • Flashing/blinking black once awhile on certain website.

Firefox is flashing/blinking black once awhile on my desktop PC. It only happen on certain websites (such as facebook or my personalized iGoogle). It doesn't happen with Chrome nor IE. Weirdly, it doesn't have the same problem on my laptop...
To me, it sounds like certain components are triggering this, but I have no idea what it is... Anyone have similar experience/solution?? Thanks.

Comparing the two systems again, I think I figured out what caused it: '''Kaspersky URL Advisor'''. If I disabled it, the blinking stops. If anyone has a solution other than that, please reply. Thanks.

  • Won't boot to desktop (picture anomally)- monitor goes and stays black

Folks I've got a strange anomally here. I've got an aroginal G4 dual 500 running Tiger that won't provide any video por picture signal to the connected Apple 22" Cinema Display (the orginal with ADC). The machine boots and shows the grey screen with the Apple logo, then goes black and stays there, and the power light stays on on the monitor. I can still here the hard drive spinning and reading. Before making suggestions read what I've tested below:
    - put 2X AGP ATI Rage 128 Pro from my G4 into other G4s (connected to 17" LCD display) and the video card worked fine.
    - put other video cards in my G4, connected to 22" display, and all worked fine. These cards were slightly more powerful than the stock 2X AGP ATI Rage 128 Pro
    - installed a clean OS on my G4 with no changes, monitor still comes up black.
    - ran disk utilies, did the pram reset, tried the fsck rick in single user mode.
I am at my witts end.
