Monitor for photography.

Hi, bought a mac pro today and 20 inch cinema widescreen display today! I am going to be using this mainly for artwork and photo processing.... i was originally not going to get a screen today but was told in the shop that my rights entitle me to 14 days use of screen and if not happy i can return it. Good colour matching and resolution is critical and my main question is will widescreen distort proportions of artwork / photos. would i be better off with an Eizo flex scan S1921SH 4:3 TFT. Or similar model under £400. Any advice appreciated or feedback from other users of apple cinema displays. Anyway better plug this machine in.

any advice would be helpful or if anyone has had similar issue.... I am trying to calibrate this 20" cinema display... The 1.8 Mac Gamma certainly seems better with photographs i have taken, however most advice on web is saying go for the 2.2 gamma - however this seems to be miles off the correct colour / contrast. 1.8 with white Balance somewhere between 6200 and 6500 is about as good as i can get it however find the small apple calibration methods of adjusting background to the apple etc... not very accurate. Is there a better method which is straightforward and inexpensive. Would i be better of with another screen perhaps as finding saturation on this monitor almost too high and no control over this?!

Hi,
I am trying to calibrate my macbook pro 17 inch monitor for photography. Is there any software doing it automatic? I have heard of spyder3 but it looks to me that you put a tool on the screen.Is there any other ways avoiding that? I also have done my computer one from display and putting everything in to the middle not shore is that corect.

What features should be considered when choosing a color monitor for handling and editing digital photographs? What considerations should be given to size, resolution and features? What are some brand names that are reasonably priced that have the important features.
I'll be using the monitor as a plug-in for my PowerBook G4 when I want to have a larger screen than 15".

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Best Monitors for Video editing?

Hey guys. I'm looking at an NEC monitor for editing my stills, and am wondering if this will be suitable for video editing?
Models I'm considering are:

These monitors are great for stills, as they cam emulate paper types well, but do I need a more "vibrant" monitor for video? Just worried that my video will look a bit off on these monitors, as it's such a different medium?
If they aren't suitable, what brand/models are considered good? (Professional level).

Hey Fuzzy, sorry about the format of this reply. Not sure to quote on here the way you did. Your points are addressed numerically.
1. I haven't seen the user manuals, but using http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa271w-bk for example, under color gamut, there's no mention of Rec709. Compare that to: http://www.eizo.com.au/products/coloredge/cg276/index.html#tab02, under preset modes. Not to mention this entire page: http://www.eizo.com/global/solutions/graphics/video_editing_and_post_production.html.
Just seems like NEC isn't playing up their video editng credentials, and I wonder why?
If you can link me to a user manual for any of the above models, which shows that it ships with Rec709 I'd appreciate it.

Buying a Dell monitor for my MacBook Pro

Hey people,
Sorry for being a newbie with this forums, I don't really know if this question should be posted here, considering I will use the monitor with my rMBP or if I should post this at the peripherals section of the forums.
Anyway, I'm in doubt between buying a Dell U2412M and the Dell U2414H, but I've seen people saying they had problems with both of them. Basically relating to making the DP ports to work with and sometimes about the amount of colors displayed (some people said the monitors wore not working at 8 bits (16.7m colors) when connected by HDMI and DP, due to the computer recognizing the monitors as TV screens or something like that) and that there is an Issue with the HDMI due to the nVidia graphics card. Also there's an issue with the monitor going to sleep mode and not coming back without re-plugging it.
My main questions are related to the connectivity (if the mDP works well considering I will use it for both monitors, I'm not thinking about buying converters to use DVI or even using the HDMI port); to the fact that one of the screens is 16:10 and the other is 16:9 (I don't know if that makes much difference, I will use the computer for work (some CAD applications and 3D rendering) and sometimes for photography editing after the renderings). The fact about the USB ports being 2.0 with the 2412M is not an issue at all.
As I heard both monitors are pretty decent concerning color reproduction, with the 2414H coming calibrated from factory and the 2412M being better if properly calibrated (according to TFT Central).
And the last question, IF somebody has the 2414H is if it could work as a TV (I would use an outside receiver (such as cable TV and Apple TV) and connect it to the HDMI port, but for that I would need the monitor to put the sound out from the audio connector, anybody know if it works?)
So, if anybody could give me any information about these monitors I'd be pleased. Or maybe other suggestions I'd be glad (My budget cannot go beyond the price of those Dell)

Yes, if it's a Thunderbolt computer, but you will need to connect another Thunderbolt device (such as a disk drive) between the displays.

Display for web design, photography or gaming - they are all going to be different due to different parameters taking the priority.

Which monitor for accurate color management?

I shoot digital product and food photography using a mac powerbook. I've been using a LaCie CRT (yes, I said CRT) monitor for fine tuning my photos. It has finally started acting up so I'm ready for a new monitor. Can anyone recommend a dependable monitor that has color, brightness and contrast controls for use with establishing color managed profiles using eye1 macbeth (now that company is called something else which I can not remember at the moment). Obviously it needs to be accurate when it comes to color, brightness and contrast as well.
I ended up using my laptop screen this past shoot cause I had no other choice - but it made me really nervous.....

First of all, my sincere condolences for your loss. Losing your last high-end CRT is a traumatic loss. I'm still hanging on to two (2) of them! (Knock on wood!)

You want to use the SpectraView II software to conduct all the work internally and use GammaComp and ColorComp.

Montior/display calibration for photography?

What is the best way to go about calibrating my MacBook display to give me accurate color representation while working with my photographs? When I get them printed, they don't look as good as they do on my screen.
All the tutorials for monitor calibration for photography purposes I can find have been for Windows.

Hi Dave.
Well, if you want to get really professional, a good idea is to buy some calibrating hardware. Pantone's Huey does a really nice job according to MacAddict magazine (now Mac l Life magazine).

If you want to go the "free" route, you can generally calibrate the display through the displays system preferences pane in System Preferences. Just click on the "displays" pane and then click on the color tab. You can then create a custome color profile by following the on-screen instructions.

Good 17-19" color monitor for under $200?

I'm looking for a decent color monitor -- in terms of color fidelity and contrast ratio -- for under $200, preferably $150 or less. Is that possible? My current monitor makes pictures appear too dark when editing, even with the brightness turned all the way up. When I edit photos to make them look good on the screen, they appear washed out elsewhere (i.e., on other screens or when printed).
I'm obviously not a pro looking for top of the line stuff -- just a decent 17-19 inch monitor for editing photos in Lightroom. Thanks.

While a better monitor is always, well.....better...I'm not sure that's going to solve your problem. The issue appears to be one of color management, particularly monitor calibration. I would strongly advize investing $25 and taking a one month membership at lynda.com. There you can check out some excellent video training on this subject (and many others).
My experience is that to get anywhere close to matching prints to what you see on screen, be prepared to spend a couple of hundred bucks on calibration software and hardware. I opened this can of worms a couple of years back and it took a while to get my head around the concepts of color spaces, gamuts, soft proofing, hardware profiles etc. etc. But it was worth it in the end. I'm certanly no expert, but I have a much clearer idea of what's going on with my prints color-wise. Screen-to-print is still not an absolutely perfect match (is anyone's?), but close enough for my purposes (weddings, events, portrait photography).
I looked into getting a better monitor, but my research tells me that if I'm paying much less that $1500, the result may not be much better than what I've got (an old View Sonic GS771, a snip at $20 !!).
Seriously, lynda.com, you can't go wrong. Best money I ever spent.

I need a recommendation for a 24" professional photography monitor for my late 2013 MacBook Pro. I am looking for a monitor that plays well with my 13" late 2013 Macbook pro. I tryed the Dell U2413 and found after the fact that it did not work well with my Macbook pro. Read up on the Asus PA 249Q, It also seems to have problems with my Macbook Pro. Apple display is larger than i want. Looking for recommendations for compatable IPS monitor for use with Aperture. buget is $300 to $800.

Best $1k-$2k monitor for editing HD video?

I'm finding myself lately doing quite a bit of color correction to HD video footage lately, and my extremely old monitor (Planar PX2611W) just isn't sufficient anymore, so I'm hoping you all might be able to help me. I've looked at a number of different monitors, and am starting to get confused by all of the Gamut discussions and whether they play at all into video editing (or are just for photo editing - which is also important to me), calibration issues (or devices), etc.
What I am looking for is around 27", preferably closer to $1k but willing to go up to $2k'ish, professional grade and calibrated monitor for editing HD video footage (displayed on everything from HD TVs to smart phones) and photos (mostly for web but also definitely do some printing - usually all in the sRGB gamut).
Also looking for calibration device suggestions if the monitor doesn't have such functionality built in.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Both monitors at the same time ? That's the same (or worse) as using only the larger monitor.
You should do the test again using just the older monitor with the smaller resolution.
I believe the higher the resolution the harder the CPU and graphics card has to work. This could mean slowdowns and maybe choppy playback.
A better solution would be to use 2 monitors. The playback monitor should be maybe only 1920 resolution. And in Nvidia panel you should set the hardware acceleration only for this monitors and not for both. On the second monitor you can move most of your toolbars. In this way you will have a giant workspace/resolution - but only 1920 pixels accelerated.
I also bought a NEC PA241W and I searched high and low and could only find discussions about photography and printing. Like calibration and this monitor is good only for printing. And not one discussion on any forum about calibration and After Effects for example. Like the video people are not interested at all in calibration.
I would really like to know if calibration with the X-rite i1Display Pro is also good for video ? Or only for printing.

How do I use my iMac(late 2009) as a monitor for my MBP(2012) or my MBP(late 2010) without software?

I currently have a late 2009 iMac, a 2012 MBP, a mid 2010 MBP and a MinDisplay Port (MDP) male to male cable. I am trying to either use the iMac a second monitor for one of the MBPs or mirror the display.
The iMac has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
The MBP 2010 has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion)
The MBP 2012 has a Thunderbolt port and is running OS X 10.9 (Maverics)
When I connect the 2010 MBP to the iMac with the MDP cable the screen of the iMac goes black and the MBP flashes blue. I have been looking for a solution and I have tried:
Rebooting them in the order of: connecting the cable, turing on the MBP, then turing on the iMac
Whilst they are on simply plugging the cable between the two
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the MBP
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the iMac, whilst there are connected, only toggles a black screen on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the MBP doesn't do anything
Every time I connect the MBP 2012 to the iMac with the MDP cable, the MBP screen goes black and the computor screen becomes unresponsive but the screen stays on and I have to reboot the MBP.
I will really appreciate anyone who has any information on this topic.

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
• at Startup
• at wake from sleep
• when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
• when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences
