Monitor freaks out with colorful blotches/lines; often precedes crash

I have a first gen iMac g5 20 in. The mother board was replaced as was the power supply under Apple's replacement program. I have subsequently replaced the power supply again. I also wiped the HD and reinstalled 10.5.
Basically, shortly after booting up, the graphics freak out. A strange colorful shift will happen, or window elements will ghost with vertical lines. Often it will crash after doing this. Sometimes if I stop immediately and let it fall to sleep, I can wake it back up and use it again, but eventually (minutes, not hours) this will happen again and crash.
I took it to the apple store. My only recourse was to replace the moboard. I reminded them they'd done that once. That's my only choice. I've had fizzled graphics cards in the past and that's exactly what this feels like. Apparently it's part of the board.
Here's the deal. Is it reasonable in anybody's mind to have to replace your motherboard twice in the life of your machine? I had an powermac g3 that lasted for 10 years, until I retired it to my wife's classroom, where it still works.
Has anyone else had this ongoing issue with this model? It seems absurd to buy a machine for $1500 that in order to keep functioning after 5 years is to pay another 900 to replace the mother board.
Are there any other solutions?
Thanks,
Matt

Toot,
I bought Apple for the product quality.....so what gives?
These logic boards and power supplies were all victims of the "capacitor plague".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
"Circa 2005 Dell will spend some US $150 million replacing the motherboards entirely and another $150 million on the logistics of determining whether a system is in need of replacement. HP reportedly purged its product line in 2004. The motherboards and power supplies in Apple iMac G5s[3] and some eMacs[4] were also affected."
So we've got 18 Dell boards at school that failed after Dell stopped their recall. They have twice as many caps as a G5 logic board.
It's so common it's the first thing I look for if something fails and it has 'lytics in it.

My iMac 24" inte will not boot. Monitor lights up with squiggly little lines, but that's all. Help??

Can you run Apple Hardware Test.  In you case it is not so much to see what it finds but to see whether you can boot it at all.
    Or try a safe boot.
It may be time to take to apple for repair.

  • Bad Scan result black page with color vertical lines

Why my HP Deskjet 1050 All in one printer Bad Scan result black page with color vertical lines ? i'm running on linux mint 17.

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you are getting vertical lines with your scanning when using your HP Deskjet 1050 printer on Linux Mint 17. I am happy to look into this for you! What happens when you make copies with the printer? Copy Documents with Text and Graphics. Do you still see the vertical lines? In the meantime, please see this guide, Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies or Scans, and let me know what happens! Hope to hear from you soon!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

  • Firefox freaks out with large images

I know Firefox has its place among the slower browsers, but this is ridiculous.  If I click on an image that has to be scaled, it's bye-bye to a responsive desktop.  Three minutes later it appears, but it freaks out again when I try to close it, or switch windows, or anything.  Yes, I know, it's a large picture, but I don't think it requires that much time.  Konqueror and Kazehakase load it just fine, so I know it's a firefox problem.  Couple other things, does anyone else have this problem?  It's been going on for a while now, I just assumed that it would go away after an update.  I unchecked the "load images automatically", but that removes all the images, which kinda kills the whole browsing experience.  I use a lot of the Firefox features regularly, so I'd rather not switch.  And believe me, I've tried.

How big is the image and what are your system specs? Upload the image in question to a web host (http://xnr.be), so we can see if we expeirence any problems with it.
Edit: if its on your desktop from your sig, its because your out of ram as firefox is a ram hog. It uses 40-50mb ram alone on my system with just 1 page open, it increases to about 140mb ram with just 4-5 tabs open. I would say that you need at least 256MB to run firefox and you will still run out of ram for some things. Be sure your not running out of swap space space as well as ram, it is what is used when your ram is used up (However its alot slower).

  • My mac screen comes out with white fuzzy lines going across the screen, it used to just go back to normal and out of no where it freezes and the white fuzzy lines go across the screen. Now it is frozen at the opening screen. what do i do?

My mac screen is frozen with white fuzzy lines going across the screen. I shut it off and turn it back on but it still remains white fish lines on the start up screen. I've tried revolting it, it works sometimes but now its stuck at the starting screen. I have been at this for 2 hours to try and fix it but nothing has changed about the screen. What do I do, if I break this computer I'm screwed.

I would post a picture of the screen but I do not know how to do that

  • Form filled out with colors, but when opened in adobe reader they are black

I have filled out a form with custom colors used in the accesability settings, but when I save the document and open it adobe reader they filled in fonts are black.
Is there a way to maintain the accesability colours when printing and opening in adobe reader ?

Accessibility settings are a personal preference. They are set by each
user (or, if you have Reader and Acrobat, in each one). Above all,
they are very much NOT saved in a document, because each user needs to
be able to set their own.

  • Spreadsheets print out with missing horizontal lines

I've searched the archives on this with no luck.
Ever since migrating to my new iBook G4 (OS 10.4.2), some horizontal grid lines in my AW spreadsheets do not print out. Some do. Some don't. All vertical lines print out okay, though. When printing, I DO enable the "print cell grid" option.
I'm using AW 6.2.9. I never had this problem with my older iBook. Any help you can suggest will be appreciated. THANKS.
    -Bob

Having made a similar observation, I posed the same question a few months ago -- the same spreadsheet, printing to the same printer, will print the lines in AW5, but not in AW6. There seems to be no definitive answer, but I had to print the spreadsheet while I was away, and to my surprise (and on a different printer), the grid lines printed. The only thing I can surmise is that it is somehow related to printer drivers.

  • Help! movies in idvd look terrible, washed-out with random horizontal lines

i'm exporting them from final cut pro (where they look great) as quicktimes (29.97) using the animation compression, best quality and millions of colors... is this the best way to bring them into idvd? should i try an mpeg4 instead? the project was originally shot on film and looked great. now, when i play the dvd, it's a fuzzy washed-out mess... please help...
    thanks!

I don't have FCP but I believe you should use the DV codec.
So try DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (or DV-PAL if you happen to use PAL).

  • Web Colors: Washed out.  Color Profile?

When using lightroom, I find that photos that are exported as Web images appear washed out and lighter than when I'm in the "Library" section. I find myself compensating by darkening the images in the Library to get the just right in "Web".
I guess I attribute that to a mismatched color profile. But I can't find any settings saying "the Library color profile is AdobeRGB and the Web profile is sRGB" or something like that.
Where is that setting? Am I crazy? Again? :-)
    gm.

After so many people here and in every other photography forum asking why their images look 'wrong' in a browser, and the answer being, over and over, that they are using the wrong color space for output, it should be obvious that the reason that they notice and catch the problem is because they are using a non-managed browser. The ONLY reason they caught the problem is because they are using a non-managed browser. If they are using a managed browser, they won't catch the problem.
I would much rather use a browser that represents an average view and have confidence that people are seeing something reasonable, than assume that everything went right and post stuff indiscriminately and in a sense blindly. After all, if there is going to be so much variation between monitors, why stress out with color management in the first place. Just calibrate your monitor so you have a decent baseline and move on. But have SOME way to know that the workflow went as expected... use a managed browser and that final check is inexistent.
Suppose you print at a place like Lulu.com. Would you upload and order
50 copies of a book before you buy one copy of a book and make sure that everything is correct? That would be just plain stupid. Well, putting up a website without checking it on a non-color managed browser is just about as silly.
To each his own... some advice is practical, some is theoretical... understand the theory, but live in a practical world. And take simple steps to catch stupid mistakes, like making sure that you use a non-managed browser to make sure that you output the right colors.

  • Some open gl apps freak out.

I'm still researching, but I think this problem has to do with SDL.
here's part of a post that I believe applies to me...
    Frozen bubble outputs:
[SDL Init] [Graphics...] [Levels] Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault
    (SDL Parachute Deployed)
    Segmentation fault
    Tuxracer:
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)
    Segmentation fault
    Foobillard:
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)
GLTron and Chromium work fine, so it appears to be just SDL and not
    OpenGL.
Anyway,  Im using the nvidia driver with dual screens. A gforce3 as
primary agp card and gforce4 as secondary pci card. I suspect that
there is a conflict going on somewhere between using the nvidia
driver, openGL and SDL. and it might have something to do with
    the upgraded xfree86.  I'm using xfree86 verssion 4.4.0
I do see a few errors in my log file...
    (EE) NVIDIA(1): Cannot read V_BIOS
(EE) NVIDIA(1): Unable to initialize the X Int10 module; the console may not
(EE) NVIDIA(1):      be restored correctly on your TV.
I'm not sure if these are serious errors or not, or if they have
anything to do with some open gl apps either freaking out with
the parachute thingy or just running totally choppy and freezing up.
Can anyone give me some inpute on how to go about solving this?

Thanks tons! reinstalling the nvidia driver fixed the problem. Well
I should say mostly fixed the problem. glxgears isback to kicking butt
on both monitors/cards. open gl works great on the secondary
gforce4 pci device. on my primary geforce3 agp device I still
get the sdl parchute thing with foobillard but that doesen't really
bother me. I'm alittle concerned about this message from the
    installer.

  • Display on iMac freaking out

My wifes iMac (Intel 2.66 GHz/1 G Ram/ 20" display)has recently began to freak out with numerous blank blocks on the screen (up to 12) opening up when switching applications. It doesn't happen when working in an app, only switching between apps. The blocks can not be closed on the screen, they are frozen. You must shut the computer down and reboot to continue working. Sort of like Expose going nuts. Has anyone run into this situation? Any advise?

Unless this happens only when playing a video, you'll probably want to ask this question in either the iMac or Mac OS X forums since it's probably not a QuickTime problem per se.
    Regards.

  • Upgraded Leapord to Snow, can't get Dell 3110CN out of color print

I could select 'standard' or 'greyscale' before upgrade to 10.6.7 (from 10.5.8).  Now I don't have choice, laser prints come out with color.  Have removed Dell from System Pref Print and Fax and re-added, using latest Dell driver from website, no good.  Laser toner quite expensive, please help a not-so dialed in computer geek!

Actually, need to clarify something.  I upgraded both my laptop and my Desktop 2 Ghz Intel Core Duo 1.5 GB 667 MHz at same time with Snow Leapord 10.6.3 Family Pack (update to 6.7).  The Desktop was primary user of Dell printer, it was originally running 10.4 and working fine/able to toggle btwn Standard (meaning Color) and Greyscale.  I would sometimes plug printer into laptop, but can not say for sure if Greyscale option was there (10.5 on laptop).
Both are older gear.  Would love to buy new, I love Mac but.....not made of money.  Hope new Lion convinces me to part with my hard-earned.  I have buddies that buy latest of everything (iPad then iPad 2, Macbook Air, Pro 17", iPhone 2, 3, 3G all unlocked b/c the iPhone4, you get the drift).  Figure I'll just look over their shoulder.
Not that Lion will fix my Dell 3110CN issue if I can't find a good Driver.

  • When HP Envy is tilted audio freaks out

Hello! I have a HP Envy m6 Notebook PC (m6-n012dx) and I just got it a few days ago from best buy. Before I delve into my issues, I have updated all the drivers of the computer that it's telling me to.
So after I'm on it for awhile, and if I'm listening to music, the audio will freak out and start creating a kinda screeching noise. I thought this might be from overheating (as the laptop keeps getting pretty warm in a smaller amount of time than I think it should, even after updating drivers). It was doing that before I updated the drivers and the laptop was quite warm.
However today I was on it and the laptop was relatively cool and the audio still freaked out with the same noises. I don't know what to do.
This has happened three times with headphones and once without by the way, so it doesn't seem to be just my headphones or something. Also when it happens the computers performance seems to slow down; I usually just close the laptop for several minutes and then get back on and everything seems fine.
It might be worth noting too that I was playing a game, with all the game's audio turned off, with the music on. A friend suggested turning Beats Audio's multistreaming option off. I don't know if that will help or anything though.

http://goo.gl/FEXqpit's a weird to think of this, but try it out? it seemed to work for the guy who tried. (link at top of post)
