Monitor freezes after grub starts

Hi,
I'm with the following problem: when I start my computer, in a few seconds after I choose Arch Linux at the grub menu my monitor shows a lot of garbage that does not allow me to see what is going on with my computer.  So I don't even get the command line after I start my computer
It's not a problem with my monitor because I can use the arch installation CD to get to the command line.
I tried to use the second option from the grub menu, arch linux fallback, but I had the exactly same problem.
I have no clue of how I can even start trying to solve this problem. The only thing that I could think of was to use the installation CD, mount /var/ and get the messages.log file. The file can be downloaded from:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=90BUSPQP
Do you have any idea of how I can solve this problem?
Thanks!

Sorry... it didn't come to me that downloading from megaupload would be such a hassle. Thanks George.Harmony for letting me know.
But the good thing is that the messages from my last boot does not go over the sending limits of this forum:

  • Freezing after overheat/start-up freezing... major issues

    Hi guys,
Quick back-story is that my G5 runs my Pro Tools HD system. I left the control room for a while and forgot to turn the AC on. Yep, stupid. The room got very hot, but keep in mind... I have NO idea if this was part of the problem or just coincidence. I came back and the machine was frozen on the display-saver. I forced down, restarted and it's never been the same. I've tried every trick I know... resetting PRAM, verifying disk permissions, starting without extensions and I even tried to reinstall OSX, but it even freezes from the startup disk. It says the memory is O.K. in About this Mac.
So, I booted from the CD to see if I could do a verify disk from the CD, and it just freezes a couple minutes in every time. Every once in a while, I'll get it to start up properly.... then I'll launch a few programs and it just cold freezes after a few minutes. It's not a kernel panic or a spinning wheel... just a hard freeze.... mouse stops working, you know the drill.
So, I'm somewhat fearful that the issue here is hardware-related. I'm trying to continue to do an Apple Hardware test from the CD, but freeze-city.
I can generally sort my way though this kind of thing. I've had gobs of these over the years, but this seems different in the way it's behaving.
Yes, I can take it to a shop. Just wondering if anyone has any speculation or ideas I may have missed.
(More back-story, I run Pro Tools HD on the PXI-X cards, so I have to have a G5... Mac Pro won't work for me, so I could buy another used G5 if I had to, but it's the set-up that's the nightmare.)
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi WCR-
I'm somewhat in the same boat. If you see my threat (G5 2.0 DP June 2004 Won't Boot!) I am experiencing similar symptoms. I've replaced every component in my box except the power supply and both processors - and everything I experience leads me to believe the problem is a blown processor, the "1" position. Now my machine won't even see CPU1 - just CPU 0. If you can keep it alive long enough, download the disk image for Apple Service Diagnostic from apple.com and see if you can run diagnostic tests on the CPU's alone. That will at least answer that question.
Unlike your situation, I got the computer in a broken state, so I don't know if heat is what caused the issue.
I guess that doesn't really answer your question, but at least don't go dropping a boat load of money on a new logic board, because it hasn't fixed my problems - it probably won't fix yours either.

  • Program Monitor freezes after updating to 5.5.2

Now, whenever I play a sequence, the program monitor freezes during playback.  It usually happens at a cut, but not always the same cut, it is random.  The monitor just freezes, but the sound and CTI keep on going.  This happens repeatedly.
    Mac Pro
    OSX 10.7.2

Same problem.  5.5.1 was very stable with a few bugs.  All I changed was updaing to 5.5.2 and WAMO my system is now unusable. I've tried updating the NVIDIA driver to 280.26 and thing were worse. Uninstalled PP5.5 Windows and reinistalled from DVD then updated 5.5.1 then updated 5.5.2.  Now PP5.5 won't even open crashing halfway through loading.  Will try ty unistall everythig and try a different GPU driver.

  • Screen freeze after OS start

    Hello,
I have a Mac Book Pro. The screen freeze right after starting the OS.
I can not move my mouse (usb or pad), Typing has no effect.
-> I switch OFF/ON many times: do not work
->I tried safe mode, but nothing work
->I tried Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down. But I can not type anything.
The clock is still working, and the airport still find if internet is ON.
It seems that everything work except the mouse and keyboard....
BUT during the re--boot, if I press Shift and power -on. the computer start in Safe mode....but then nothing....
Only the POWER button is working.
    Please help.....

    I still need help.
I went to the apple store, plugged my computer into their monitor, keyboard and mouse. It worked fine. For over an hour I clicked on everything and did just about everything I can think of that I usually do. I changed settings in preferences, turned off the screen saver and turned it back on, turned off putting the computer to sleep and back on, restarted multiple times and the keyboard and mouse worked fine. So, we determined that I must need a new keyboard and mouse.
I set up my computer this morning and it worked fine. But when I came back and tried to wake it up from the screensaver I got no reaction. pushed the power button lightly a couple of times to force the ask for password screen to come up, when I tried to type my password in nothing happened. So then I forced the computer to shut down by holding the power button down for three seconds (the one on the monitor). Then started up, mouse wouldn't work. So, I thought it must be the usb port on the monitor that is bad. I shut down. plugged the keyboard into the back of my mac instead of the monitor.
All seemed great. Computer response even seemed faster. I thought I had solved my problem. I was using the computer for probably less than 30 minutes and then while I was using it the mouse froze. Computer would accept no input from the keyboard either, like clicking F11 for expose reaction.
I'm back to square one. What else should I try?????
    Any ideas out there???
    Thanks in advance.

  • GDM freezes after I start typing my password...

    Hi everyone!
I'm running Arch Linux with the new Gnome 3.2.
After gdm shows up, I click on my name and the system prompts for my password.
Now, If I press ANY KEY the login controls (i.e. the textbox) will disappear and the screen will freeze.
I will then have to swtich to another console (using alt+ctrl+f2) and kill the gnome session but then it will automatically respawn giving me the same problem.
    P.S.
I managed to "intercept" some output from the console before GDM starts for the first time..
gdm-binary:767 **(WARNING) Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
    Any suggestions?

Did you manage to fix this? I am having the same issue. Had to move to lxdm

  • Reliable G5 tower freezes after blue start up screen?

Hi, I wonder if anyone has a solve solution to the situation outlined below.
G5 tower 2ghz, last pre intel model
chimes-grey screen-then blue screen but then freezes.
Tried PRAM, SMU reset, removal of ram in different configurations, ram system consistency check utility (fsck).
Start up using cd or single user produces a kernel error screen. Starting up from my laptop allows me access to the G5 hard drives. Running disk utility check couldn't find errors on the G5 main disk?
Is there a hardwear issue, if so how do I detect?

when this problem first appeared I took out the 7800gt graphics card and ran the comp from the orig working nvidia card. No difference. I just took out the nvidia and put the 7800 gt back in, in a different slot. No difference.
I also just took out all the ram and ran from just the original apple ram. No difference. I then replaced the apple ram with crucial ram. No difference.
    Hmmm?
I should add that when I accessed the comp via firewire from my laptop, the G5's dvd drive works, the main and secondary hard drives are also avaliable to access remotely from the laptop. I also ran disk utility diagnostics from the install disk in the g5 on it and the other drives and they all seemed ok.

  • Solaris 11.1 64bit Install freezing after GRUB selection

    All,
I am in the process of creating a DEV box for hosting my projects and I am wanting to install Solaris 11.1 onto a Lenovo Desktop PC .
    PC Details:
    Lenovo M92p Thinkcentre 3227
    Intel Core i5 3rd Gen
    4Gb Ram
    500gb HDD
    Technical Specs
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD024409
Currently the system has a OEM version of Windows 7 installed on it.
So I downloaded the latest Live image of Solaris from Oracle and burned it using Windows burn utility.
I then boot the DVD using UEFI mode and the GRUB menu displays all the various options to start the Solaris install process.
No matter which option I choose the install hangs on the black screen saying the OS version and the Copyright notice.
The text cursor is not blinking (has it crashed?)
I found this screenshot which shows what I get (note screenshot is from VM)
    http://virtuallyfun.superglobalmegacorp.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Oracle-Solaris-11.png
    Things I have done:
Flashed the BIOS to latest version
Tried booting solaris from a live usb
    Reburned the solaris iso image
Waited an hour to see if it progresses
Things I am going to do:
    Use a different ISO utility
Test if Linux can boot from PC
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your response,
I should have updated this thread.
Unfortunately Lenovo put a "bug" in their UEFI control that allows only "Windows" and "Red Hat Linux" to boot.
Any other OS with a string in the UEFI identifier that does not match this will not boot.
When I say it is a bug, Lenovo have in the past got a reputation for using Safe boot to limit non Windows OS's from starting on a machine.
Check out the article I read here:

  • Freezes after i start it up

I have had my Ipod Video for alittle less than a year and have not had a problem with it at all. One day i connected it to my computer to update the software through Itunes. ever since it hasn't run right. when i disconnected it from my computer it froze so i restart it with the menu and center button. sometimes it will come to the apple symbol and then the screen with turn half black half grey and some other times when i restart it it will come up and work perfectly for about half a minute and freeze so none of the button will work. Im not sure if this is something i can fix easily or if this is something i have to send it in for service.

  • My illustrator CS5 freezes after it starts

I'm trying to get illustrator installed on my windows 7 laptop.  It installs and loads fine but when I try to open a document or make a new document it just freezes up.
I've got windows 7 64 bit home premium
    Intel i5 m450
    6 gb ram
Anyone have any ideas of what I can do?

You have a permission problem and cannot access the default swatches and document templates. Check your user home directory and the program directory for specific permissions or try to run with administrative privileges.

  • Itunes freezes after it starts...

I turn on Itunes and it loads up, when I click on any thing else, like add album art or import file, I get a phantom box that appears whenever I click a button on the mouse then it disappears. Also I have to go to task manager to stop Itunes. I am running Norton NIS 2007 and version 7.1.8 of Itunes.

I sent in a support email through the iTunes support page: https://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/download/
I suggest you all do the same, as I've been told I will receive notification from Apple when the problem is resolved. Here's what the support person sent me:
    Dear Jason,
I'm sorry you are experiencing difficulty with the iTunes Store.
Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an >email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.
Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible.

  • WVC80N Monitoring Utility Software- Freezes after one or two frames. Tech support no help!

    Hello All,
I have a  new WVC80N cam and a new WRT230N router.  After installing both, everything is up and running perfectly via IE.  I can access from any IE computer with no problems.  HOWEVER, the desktop monitoring utility will NOT work!  I only have one cam attached (wired because the sound it TERRIBLE if wireless despite HOURS of troubleshooting with tech support) but it freezes after one or two frames.  I've tried on XP and Vista.  Tech Support in Irvine, CA simply siad there is a software conflict (and that there are many they know of), but offered NO other diagnostic help. He simply said it's probably conflicting with another video compression software on my computer and to start uninstlling programs until the problem is fixed!   WAY TO GO TECH SUPPORT....THATS A REAL SOLUTION FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS!!!  Oh and he asked me to notify them IF I found the problem!!!!
Does anyone have any ideas about common software that may be causing my conflicts?  Or has anyone experienced the same issues?  There isn't much on these boards about this problem and I can't believe that I'm the only one who has experienced the utility software NOT working on TWO different computers and two Operating systems.  These are my first linksys products in a VERY long time, and so far they'll be my last!!!!!!!!
    ANY HELP/IDEAS is GREATLY appreciated.

    Hello Bahamaboy,
Your problem is exactly my problem. I tried both Windows Xp and 7. I can see live video, but the utility only record for a few second and freeze. There is no tech support in my country - cambodia, so I'm in a more serious situation. I also need help. May be I should tried from a fresh windows installation, but what is it good for. It takes lot of time to reinstall everything. Your comments do suggest some software conflict. I think I will try it on my laptop rather than my desktop, which I do not have lot of software installed on my laptop.
(Mod note: Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

  • G4 running OS 10.5.4 freezes after start-up

My G4 is running Mac OS 10.5.4. It started frequently freezing after restart many months ago. I have to hard restart a few times and then it will eventually work, or, I can start-up in safe mode and then restart and it will work just fine. Once we are up and running there are no problems. I cannot link this problem to any new downloads or programs. I thought it might be hard drive failure and replaced the hard drive on the machine, but I still have a problem.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Welcome!
Can you be more specific about which G4 you have? There are a number of variants that can have different hardware issues. These two Apple tech documents are helpful in determining the exact model:
G4 Minitowers prior to Jan 2002
    G4 Minitowers since Jan 2002
As you are running Leopard, I assume that your processor is at least 867mHz.
Was the computer stable prior to installing Leopard?
Did you use Leopard retail install disks?
Do you have enough RAM? How about free space on the hard drive? Free space should be at least 15 percent, more if you have limited RAM. %12MB RAM is about the minimum I'd try for runnign Lepoard.
When it freezes, do you get a bunch of cryptic writing on the screen or does it lock up with no information showing on-screen?
If the problems showed up after an incremental update (example: applying the 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 update), sometimes repairing permission on your boot volume can help.
Do you have any third-party PCI cards installed? What video card do you have?
I know this is a lot to digest, but is a start on the troubleshooting process.

  • Freezing , freeze after start-up

I have just had a new logic board fitted, the machine is now chimeing and starting up on every power-up but the OS has error's and the computer freezes after reaching as far as displaying desktop items or sometimes before.
    I have tried:-
Booting from disks, computer freezes before it starts to install data or does not display my partioned hard drive in the destination window.
Target mode and re-installing 10.4 in archive and install mode.
could this be a faulty hard drive ? it has had approx 7000 hours use.
would it be a hard drive issue if it is still accessable from Target mode ?
    Matt.

    DaddyPaycheck-
I took it to the repair centre today and it booted up first time and did again. So I brought it home and first start a freeze. After 4 or so freezes I tried another instalation of 10.3.9 disks, (the orginal boot up discs the machine came with) that worked fine and did so through software update untill i installed 10.4 from dvd and then ran software update , de-selected the 10.4.9 and installed just the Java 1.3 and 1.4 updates - for better functionality within 10.4 - restarted from software update and the machine has frozen everytime.
It's time to take it back again tomorrow morning I am so peeved with the machine.

  • Satellite 1400-104 freezes after starting main softwarepackage

    Hi,
It concerns a Toshiba Satellite 1400-103 (512 MB memory). On booting the Satellite works fine, no problems with surfin or mailing, but when I start a main softwarepackage (like MS Word of Excel, or Macromedia Dreamweaver), the PC freezes after one or two minutes.
I have the impression that the fan suddenly starts turning and the computer freezes. The only thing I can do is shut down by holding the startbutton about 10 seconds, and restart.
I already reinstalled Windows XP, but after two weeks the same problem occurs. My Antivirusprogramm works fine and I check every week on spyware and malware.
Does someone have a clue about this problem?
    Thanks

    Hello
Like you can see it happens just if the some complex applications started and in the moment where the processor must run with very high speed. In this moment the processor produce a lot of warmness and it must be cooled properly. If the processor temperature is too high the unit will be shut down or freezes because of protecting the processor.
In my opinion the unit should be cleaned from dust and after that the processor can be cooled properly.
