Monitor freezes

Hello,
Hopefully someone can help me figure out this problem. I am operating an iMAC intel core duo v10.4.7. I have had it since March, but suddenly, if I leave my screen on, and go away for a while and return, the screen is lit, the mouse works, but when I go to click on anything, nothing opens. I have to re-start the system. I can't imagine restarting the computer open is good for the system.
Please help.
Jen

If that does not resolve your problem, and if I'm reading it correctly and this has only been recently occuring, there would be three other things I'd try, and I imagine that you're aware of all.
First, boot to your Install Disc 1, after choosing language on the first screen, at the second screen some pull-downs appear in the menu bar, choose Utilities and open Disk Utility, select your entire internal hard drive and the First Aid pane and click on the "Repair Disk" button (not repair permissions button). Allow it to run to completion, where it should show "No repairs necessary." Then quit Disk Utility, quit the installation sequence, choose your usual startup drive and restart. The purpose is to perform directory repair in case something got bumped out of place, or whatever else might have happened.
Second, try everything in this Apple article [note that it is about the SMC reset, but I think the other actions might pertain to your situation, as well]: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Third, go to "Downloads," not to Software Update, and download the 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel Macs to your iMac, then run it, the purpose being to see if your system can pick up whatever it is apparently missing that would get your system back to normal.
Best of luck. Out of all that, something ought to work for you, but since we don't know what exactly caused this, we can't know exactly what the fix will be - it's trial and error:)

  • HP 2509m Monitor Freezes

    Hello,
My monitor keeps shutting off when I am either watching a video, or when there is an extended amount of animation on the screen, including simply closing a window. I am trying to track down the issue. Is it the response rate? Is the screen simply not keeping up with whats going on on the screen?
The screen will freeze and turn into a solid color or a bunch of line, original screen content is NOT VISIBLE.
    NEED help
    Thanks ^_^

  • Program and source monitors freeze go black

My program and source monitors freeze, then go black and eventually white but audio keeps playing. My reference monitor keeps updating like it can see the video.
I'm useing PP CC. Updated my video driver, but it still happens.
No problems with any other video playing app.
This is what happened when I tried to re-size the monitor.
Update: monitors work with CUDA off. GTX 460 1gb

As a footnote, I opened the project on my laptop (newer CPU and video card) in PP CC and it plays perfectly. My laptop has 3GB video RAM and the desktop has only 1GB. I wonder if that could be the problem. There were some big stills, maybe CC needs more video RAM?

  • Program Monitor Freezes

Essentially, while editing SD footage, on the Premiere Pro CS5 timeline, in a SD 720 x 480 resolution project, the Program Monitor image freezes.
It does not seem to matter what I am doing such a playback, adding a transition, color correction, shortening the length of a clip, or cropping an image. It makes no difference. The Program Monitor just freezes. This happens twice in every hour or so of editing. There does not seem to be a timing variable to this problem, or it is not consistent.
The timeline is still useable and the audio continues playing, the mouse moves, I can access clips on the Source Monitor and play them. Nothing else changes. I can change the playback resolution or make any other monitor changes, although they do not show up since the image at the time of the freeze stays in the monitor. Refreshing does not work. Restarting the program does not work. All changes since the last freeze can be saved since the Save function still works. I just cannot edit and the only way that I can proceed is to reboot the computer.
Adobe Service has escalated this case #182091487, back and forth for almost two months. This is putting a crimp in my production schedule.
This happens sporadically, although on one occasion, I was actually able to demostrate the freeze to Adobe Service while they were on line.
I currently edit on an MSI GT660R laptop

    I want my CS3 back.

Screen saver is (NONE) so probably not a factor
My laptop is used for  editing while travelling. They would not let me carry
my desktop on the the  plane. Complained that the three monitors took up too
    much space.
Do  not really have much stacked up on the timeline. Mostly one, sometimes
two  and on the odd occasion, a third track for perhaps a title or PIP.
However,  I am using colour correction via Auto levels and ProDad's Mercalli
2.0  stabilizer (incredible plug-in).  Never have Red or Yellow bars over the
footage on the timeline without applying these effects. Mercury engine has
    really helped with that issue.
When my 'Program' monitor freezes up,  I am still able to save, playback
(audio only) the timeline, and even play  clips on the source monitor. It has
been suggested that I reduce the Program  monitor playback resolution. I will
    experiment with that.
I will also  follow your suggestion and render more often when these Red
/Yellow bars do  appear. I appreciate the suggestions.

  • Program Monitor freezes after updating to 5.5.2

Now, whenever I play a sequence, the program monitor freezes during playback.  It usually happens at a cut, but not always the same cut, it is random.  The monitor just freezes, but the sound and CTI keep on going.  This happens repeatedly.
    Mac Pro
    OSX 10.7.2

Same problem.  5.5.1 was very stable with a few bugs.  All I changed was updaing to 5.5.2 and WAMO my system is now unusable. I've tried updating the NVIDIA driver to 280.26 and thing were worse. Uninstalled PP5.5 Windows and reinistalled from DVD then updated 5.5.1 then updated 5.5.2.  Now PP5.5 won't even open crashing halfway through loading.  Will try ty unistall everythig and try a different GPU driver.

  • Activity Monitor Freezes

Since installing Leopard I have been getting Activity Monitor freezes. I have to quit the application and relaunch to get it going again. Happens every 30 minutes or so.
Anyone else have the lockup? Any clues to fixing the problem?

Welcome to the Mac world. Basic Mac user rule: don't move Apple apps or utilities from where Apple installs them. Basic problem isn't what you ran into, but future updates won't occur because the installer ignores anything not in the correct location.

  • Jim Simon question??? (Source and Program monitor freeze)

Jim...Did I read correctly that you are NOT having the monitor freeze when your firewire output is set to desktop speakers?  Everybody I know is having the same issue I am.  When desktop speakers are set the source monitor and the program monitor both freeze when playing out through firewire.  If I set it to external device audio everything plays fine.
If you are not having this issue can you tell me what video and audio card you have.  I would like to figure this out if possible...
    Thanks!

    tClark,
I use two LCD screens PLUS a CRT TV, connected by firewire to a Panasonic DV deck, which is connencted through SCART to the TV.
I can not replicate your problem. Pressing PLAY, even with a HDV project and with playback settings like this:
you can see what it looks like from this picture during playback:
Sorry for the flash, but it is just a quick snapshot to show what it looks like.
BTW I use Vista64 SP2 and the video card is an ATI HD Radeon 4870 with driver 9.05

  • Program monitor freezing

Hi, I just switched over to premiere CC and have been having trouble with the program monitor freezing up. I am editing R3D files 5k and therefore have the playback quality set to 1/8. But every time I'm trying to scale up the picture, the monitor freezes completely. Everything else works, but i have to restart premiere to get any picture back on the program monitor. Is there any setting i could change to prevent this? Answers are appreciated!
    - Espen

    my computer configuration details are:
    -Its a MAC
-processor: 2.6 Ghz Intel core i7
    -memory 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
    in the project settings:
-renderer: Mercury playback engine GPU acceleration (openCL)
    -diplayformat: Timecode
And I'm have set the scratch disks to an external HD using USB3, could this maybe be a problem?
The strange thing is that everything worked when I Used the Premiere cs6 before i switched to premiere pro CC.
    Thanks for the reply Rameez!

  • Windows Premier pro CS5 Program monitor freezes/hangs when video on sequence bar is playing

    Hi all,
I have been experiencing program monitor freezes/hang while the audio and the video on sequence bar is still playing. This happens on both HD and SD projects. I have tried many ways but at time it works but at times does not work. i have updated CS5 to 5.02, updated the driver and also quicktime.
Hope someone can help me on this ! Appreciate it.!
This is a complete new system.
    The specification as follows: INTEL(R) CORE(TM) i7CPU950@ 3.07GHz 3.56GHz
    installed 12.0GB RAM
    System at 64bit
Display driver using NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470.

    Hi Dennis,
Thanks for the reply. I have updated the graphics driver on Nvidia website as well.It still does not work.
Under project settings: Video rendering and playback, i have both mercury playback engine GPU accelerator and mercury playback engine softway only. it is currently set as mercury playback engine GPU accelerator.

  • Premiere program monitor freezes

Hi, I'm using premiere and after 10 minutes suddenly the program monitor freezes. I can't press the play button. I can select clips on the timeline, access the menu, import footage, move the cursor, but can't press the play button. If I wait for 5 minutes I can press play again but than there is only sound, and the image on the program monitor becomes red (like 100% red color).  After restarting windows The problem occures after 10 minutes again. My pc's ram and processor are only used by 10% and I use SSD for the footage.
So I just re-installed premiere and realised that I didn;t had the lastest version. I the lastest premiere cc I opened the project and waited untill all media was loaded.
And now whole adobe premiere freezes..........  I can only use ctrl alt delete to close it down...
Should I format my whole pc? I use windows 8.

More info: I realized that the other projects (when I open an other project) are running fine.
I also realized that when I open the project that gives the problem, that there is no problem editing from another sequence. But when I go back to the sequence that gives the problem, the screen freezes again and adobe will crash after a while... unless i go back to another sequence.
it's 6 hours of footage from a 5d mark3 and c100 and d800 nikon. no effects except the levels plugin (but not in the files where the timeline is).

  • External monitor--Freeze during playback, transition issues

I am utilizing an external monitor for playback. Every now and then the video freezes and audio continues. Also, even after performing a render all option, cross dissolves skip periodically during viewing referenced movie. When I compress the movie, I have no problems.
    Please help!

AFAIK, (I came in around FCP3) It has always been recommended that the operation of the FCP system is divided amoung at least two disks. Each version of FCP is placing higher and higher demands on the system. That you have gotten away with this for so long is truly amazing. You must live right!
There is really nothing all that new and innovative about the iMac with regards to video editing. In fact, it is a poor platform. It does not allow the installation of a second internal SATA drive, it has no expansion slots to add either a second Firewire or SATA bus, you can not upgrade the video card and so on.
Recommended distribution of the FCP elements over two disks -
Drive 1: OSX, FCP application files, FCP Project file (no media files), thumbnail and waveform cache.
Drive 2: capture scratch, autosave vault, audio + video renders +all other media files
With a good external firewire 400/800 drive (not usb), you can get multiple realtime streams.
And no, partitioning the internal drive does nothing good for you. the same heads have to scan over an even wider area after you partition. The effect can be to decrease read/write speed.
    good luck.

  • Dual monitor freeze on sleep

    Mac OS X 10.9.5.  Current model iMac:  3.5GHh i7.  32GB main mem.  NVDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096MB.
Runs fine without a second monitor.  Sleep, both manual and timeout, works fine.  Press any key awakes.
Plug in a second monitor (2 month old 27" Thunderbolt display) all works fine until Sleep happens, both manual and timeout, and then system is hard frozen.  No wakey.  Press and hold on/off key for a long time.  Wait.  Press on/off key 3 times, reboots and all is as before.
Only solution:  Never sleep.  Turn off at night to save screen hours.

Hi! Did you ever find a solution? I just bought a 2013 iMac and have the same problem- except mine will allow a login after sleep after an initial freeze of 4-5 seconds. Dual monitors as well.

  • Activity Monitor Freezes Intermittently

Starting in 10.5.1 and just lately in 10.5.6, Activity Monitor intermittently freezes even when there is no indication of heavy usage.
Strange things happen eg. the scroll bar may still go up but not down, the program menu appears then disappears. I usually have to Force Quit even though there is no indication of Not Responding. (Sometimes I can quit from my Dragthing Process Dock.)
I am not sure if this is related to the presence of "crawlers" eg. VirusBarrier Real Time Scanner. There is no indication that they have excessive usage.
What can I use to monitor the Monitor?

    HI,
Delete the VirusBarrier RealTime Scanner. You do not need anti-virus software on a Mac. A/V software on a Mac will manifest itself if all the symptoms you are having.
    This utility can remove the application and all associated files;

  • Monitor freezes after grub starts

    Hi,
I'm with the following problem: when I start my computer, in a few seconds after I choose Arch Linux at the grub menu my monitor shows a lot of garbage that does not allow me to see what is going on with my computer.  So I don't even get the command line after I start my computer
It's not a problem with my monitor because I can use the arch installation CD to get to the command line.
I tried to use the second option from the grub menu, arch linux fallback, but I had the exactly same problem.
I have no clue of how I can even start trying to solve this problem. The only thing that I could think of was to use the installation CD, mount /var/ and get the messages.log file. The file can be downloaded from:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=90BUSPQP
Do you have any idea of how I can solve this problem?
    Thanks!

Sorry... it didn't come to me that downloading from megaupload would be such a hassle. Thanks George.Harmony for letting me know.
But the good thing is that the messages from my last boot does not go over the sending limits of this forum:
