Monitor goes blank randomly
I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) and for whatever reason my monitor will go blank and everything keeps working such as sound, etc. It comes back and it happens a few times a day. This occurs with two different brands monitors although both are connect via DisplayPort to HDMI and I've also done HDMI to HDMI. I have occasionally connected an external monitor via DisplayPort to HD15 and no blank outs.
The only common part is my MBP and the monitor connecting via HDMI. Different cables, different brand monitors, etc. I am running 10.10 and this has happened with for quiet a while from 10.8 until now.
I am using the Thunderbolt display on a PC with the ASUS P8Z77-V Thunderbolt enabled mother board. I have a dual display setup with and smaller VGA monitor.
The Thunderbolt display blacks out randomly. Sometimes I can use the resolution tool from my secondary display, reset the resolution down and the Thunderbolt comes back on. Other tiomes that doesn't work and I have to re-boot. This happens several times aq day. I thought it might be the motehr board, as this is fairly new technology in the PC/Windows world.
Next time it happens, I'll see if I can use the flashlight trick - maybe get it repaired at Apple.
Thanks

Wow, this reminds me of what happened with Mavericks 10.9.0 until 10.9.3 and later were released and fixed this problem.
My monitor is a Dell S2440L connected to my Mac mini late 2012 via an HDMI cable.
The monitor goes blank randomly and sometimes a snowy screen like you would see when watching a UHF
channel on an old CRT TV shows up when the video comes back on. This happens while in the OS.
I also have power management problems again with computer not sleeping properly and my Magic Mouse
being able to wake up the computer despite "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" being unchecked.
I also have Wake for network access, power nap and start up after power failure unchecked as well.
Computer sleep and display sleep are set to "never" as I always had it with Mavericks.
These problems occurred after shutting down my Mac and restarting it this morning.
I know using a VGA cable will fix it but I don't want to do that.
Sorry for sounding frustrated but I'm not alone. So many people are having the same issue
of HDMI video blanking out while in the OS.
I love the look of Yosemite but wish I was back with Mavericks 10.9.5 where everything worked
flawlessly and I really mean flawlessly. It was magical. Not a single problem.
I guess we have to wait for 10.10.2 or 10.10.3.
I don't want to go back to Mavericks but if my screen keeps blanking out then my computer is of
no use for work or multimedia.
I'm sorry about the rant.
If anyone has figured out a workaround until Apple can issue another point release, please let me know.
I already tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM several times to no avail.
Thanks in advance.
I appreciate any help.

HP Omni 220-1050xt Monitor goes blank at random times and will not light up.
Recently my computer screen starting going blank without any warning. One minute it is fine and I am working away, then the screen turns black and no key sequence will bring it back. I have selected a power scheme that has never, never, never set in the categories. I also sent my screen saver to None. I took it to Staples to run a diagnostic which responded with no errors. Within 15 minutes of running, the screen was blank and the computer was unresponsive.
Hello @jlh41,
I understand that you are experiencing an issue where your HP Omni 220-1050xt Monitor is going blank without warning. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try different cables between your computer and monitor.
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html

Hello everybody,
I have the following situation:
A WAN VoIP network, with centralized call processing model (central site and few branches)
Cisco IP Phones 7945-G and 7965-G running SCCP
Cisco Unified Communications Manager 8.6(2a)
SCCP firmware Release 9.2(3) for the above mentioned hardware models
The problem that occurs randomly is that either when the firmware was SCCP firmware Release 9.2(1), or it was upgraded to SCCP firmware Release 9.2(3), approximately 5 Cisco IP Phones, the screen goes blank, the phone being still operational (but difficult to operate in such circumstances), and the problem persists until it is disconnected from PoE, and re-connected.
Please if possible, any solution to this problem is much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
RaduHello again,
In addition to what I already mentioned, I would like to detail a few aspects, in order to be more specific with this behavior:
- From the total number of Cisco IP phones which is less than 1000, this behavior happened randomly, within 1 month and 3 weeks
- Actually, it was a total number of 8 Cisco IP phones whose display went off, 4 being located in Headquarters, and from the other 4, 3 were in the same Branch, and 1 in another Branch
- Also, 7 IP phones are connected in non-Cisco switches with PoE, and 1 IP Phone was power supplied from AC adapter
- initially, all existing IP phones had firmware Release 9.2(1) for 7945G and 7965G, and the mentioned behavior happened with 4 IP phones
- then, for all IP phones, it were upgraded to firmware Release 9.2(3) for 7945G and 7965G, but problem re-appeared with other 4 IP phones
The only solution that solved the issue for each IP phone was to disconnect the power from the IP phones.
I hope that you might help me on how to get solving this problem, and I am looking forward for any useful idea or solution.
Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

Pavilion f1703 monitor goes blank 2 seconds after start-up
When the computer is turned on, the monitor only functions for a couple of seconds before it goes blank..power light shows it to be working.
If I turn the monitor off at the front power switch, and turn it back on, the same thing happens..2 seconds of normal then blank.
In the couple of days leading up to this, the screen had a slight "flicker" effect going on.
All ideas greatly accepted!!I am having the identical problem. I hooked this monitor that a friend gave me and it worked great for several days. There were no flickerings or any indications of a looming problem. Then it started going blank after 2 secs and continues to do that. I did see a warning about the "power saver", or something like that, was in operation. Unfortunately, I can't get it to stay on long enough to go into the menue and see if there is anything I can change there. Any help would be appreciated.

IBM Thinkpad Monitor goes blank after a few miniutes
Hi,
I have aT43p with an ATI Mobility FireGL V3200 running XP Sp2. For the past couple of weeks the screen goes blank (Black) after several minutes. I can use the Fn-F7 to toggle the monitor between LCD and external monitor (which is not attached) and back to LCD (or dual display) and the LCD works again!, but alas only for several more moments and then it goes blank again and I have to re-toggle. I find that if I run on only battery power I get several extra minutes before Blacks-Ville. The same effect can be achieved by putting her to sleep and then waking her.
I should mention that there is a slight pink tinge to the display during the initial splash screen (while the option to enter the Bios via blue Access IBM button), but this goes completely for subsequent screen displays.
I can connect across the LAN using VNC and can see windows (as one would expect).
I have gone to the support area and downloaded all drivers and reinstalled to no avail. I have also checked the Monitor connections, but there is no obvious loose connection. I have also run a in-depth virus analysis (using ESET NOD) and an Adaware sweep, again with no positive result. I have also gone into MSCONFIG, disabled as much as I can and I have also rolled back using System Restore to a time before the issue presented.
Nothing that I have done to date has made the slightest difference.
The screen Blacks even if I go straight to Bios which inclines me to think that the problem lies outside of Windows.
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Dave
Message Edited by ddempsey on 08-10-2008 05:48 AMHello ddempsey,
I can confirm all your problems (except the "slight pink tinge"- sure it is not
a reflection or so?), I've got them on my a21p since a couple of years as well.
I am using an external monitor after I tried all software possibilties and was
fed up with the toggling. colours are still excellent, I contradict a dying
as such, a digital display is either on or off, not fading away.
in desperation I replaced the inverter card (part number 12P3053) as a
last resort but without any success.
so I was happy to find one with exact the same problem and I hope
by jumping on your train that someone comes up with a solution.
have you tried this:
if you do not boot windows, leaving a plain start screen
either by pressing pause or later f8 the display shuts down
in the same way, thereby proving that the problem
is beyond an explanation due to a higher resolution task.
this arouses a suspicion whether the ATi Rage Mobility graphic card
(messing up in all brands of notebooks - see copious complains in the www)
might be the cause. unfortunately ATI been bought by AMD
but the support of its successor for old cards is a disgrace compared
what Lenovo still delivering for ancient IBM users!

Premiere Pro 5.5 program monitor goes blank, please help!
I started a super simple brand new project in Premiere Pro 5.5, importing only simple, small resolution png files (to create an animation), and my program monitor goes completely blank. This started happening right when I updated the driver for my video card. I run a Windows 7 64-bit machine, with NVidia Quadro 2000, driver updated (333.11), source footage is png files, my OS is up to date, I use just a single monitor, there are no error messages at all, when I try to scrub, my program monitor stops working (it shows a still image), then suddenly it goes completely black! I have no third party effects, plug-ins or hardware installed. And yes, my Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration is good. I am completely stumped since the project is barely started. Does anyone have any ideas?!

So... have you tried a different driver?

My ipad 3 screen goes blank randomly
i have owned my new ipad 16gb (3rd gen) for 3 months and for 2 months it worked great with only having a couple of crashes, but then the screen started going randomly blank. I thought it may just need a reset but it started doing it again and again no matter what your doing apps video email everything. When the screen goes blank the backlight is still on if you had any sound playing you can still hear it with no image? To get the screen back on i press the wake/sleep button to switch the screen off then the button again to get the unlock screen back, then as soon as i unlock it returns me to what i was doing before the screen went. Its in repair at the moment having just come back from repaire last week but apple repaire couldnt find anything wrong with there service. Has anyone else had this problem?
go to settings>general>autolock and see what you have it set to. see if setting it to a higher time or never helps you out.
you don't happen to have a magnet on your right wrist do you? you might be triggering the ipad smart cover sleep with it.
Just two theories. -
My Macbook Pro screen screen will go blank randomly. Recently it has gotten worse. Before it might happen just after it has been sleeping for a day but recently it had been happening while in the middle of tasks. I have attached the error report. Cant make head or tails of it. Any help?
Thanks

Start up has pink vertical lines then monitor goes blank on iMac
I was working on my computer when all of a sudden the screen went grey with 5 vertical pink lines appeared. I have switched the monitor off, but now it starts up with the pink lines then goes to a blank screen, what is the problem?
Sounds like a hardware problem ..
You can run the Apple Hardware Test
Or take your Mac to an Apple Store or Apple certitied repair provider listed here. -
I have a 30in cinema display attached to my iMac and the iMac screen randomly goes black while the cinema stays active. I can put it to sleep and log back in which fixes it, but often it happens again immediately after. Sometimes it happens so quickly I can't even finishing logging in! I'd like to know if this is a Mavericks issue and I will roll my machine back. Thank you!

Wanted to update you on my situation with this.
So far 8 hours have gone by and I have not had a screen blackout.
FIRST I did the Hardware Test. TWICE on the extended test, the instructions on the KB Article explain. It took almost 3 hours, but while the test was running, both times, my computer screen did not go black.
I did get an error message, both times. Different each time. I looked up both of the error messages on discussion boards. Lots of conflicting info
One good thread said my first error was that my hard drive was bad and would probably fail.
The next error message I researched said that a fan was bad or needed replacement.
(information comes from other folks on discussion boards, not from Apple or technician)
Not sure what exactly those 2 error messages indicate but I followed a thread where someone found a solution by doing the following. So far it's worked.
After Hardware Test I did a shutdown and an SMC resest. Unplugged computer power source from wall and computer for about 10 minutes.
Finally after a restart I downloaded "SMC Fan Control" (CNET Downloads has a nice safe copy you can download)
There is a temperature monitor and from what I've read so far, keeping the CPU temperature under 50˚C is ideal. Making sure your fans and computer is in a well ventilated area/room too of course.
The SMC Fan Control helps you set your own speeds on the fans and so far everything has been going normal. -
Can Flash cause a laptop monitor and the attached monitor to go blank when playing a game on facebook using firefox latest version? I have this version installed 11.7.700.225
I saw another thread in which people were wondering why you'd want to run a machine with a lid closed. For one thing, the external monitor resolution is much better w the lid down. It appears you have to have the laptop plugged in in order to get the external screen to stay live when you close the lid. This is kind of a pain because one of my desks is upstairs and one is down and sometimes I just want to run upstairs and work for 1-2 hours without bothering with the power cord, etc.

Program monitor goes blank when editing certain clips
A few days ago a 2 new problems occurred.
1.
The project I have is sett to 720, 24 fps.
The clips I use is from 5D MK3, shot in 720, 50fps.
Some of the clips I made duplicates of, and interpreted to 24fps for a slomo effect.
The 24fps clips works fine on the timeline. But the one that still has 50fps will go black in the program monitor when I try to edit them on the timeline.
It doesnt matter what I do, ripple edit or just shorten, still gets black. If I drag the marker over tha clips it shows fine though, but when editingt hem, just black.
2.
The second problem is regarding the very last clip in the timeline.
The last frame, orjust some visual error after the last frame, now has the right part of the program monitor screwed up. A part of the screen is black.
All this started like 2 days ago, after I upgraded my 2xSingle license to full CC. I had PS and PPro before.
Whats going on?
Some facts:
- Premiere Pro CC 7.1.0 (141) - All updated
- Win 7 64bit (all updated as of 2013-11-30)
- 64 GB ram
- Clips from Canon 5D MK3, 720, 50fps, IPS codec
- No other software running, restarted several times
- Geforce 480GTX, Asus P9X79, Intel Core i7 3820 3.6 GHz, Corsair 32GB (4x8192MB) CL10 1866Mhz
- GeForce Drivers 331.82
- Never had this problem before
- Mercury Playback Engine GPU Enabled (disabled doesnt solve the problem)
Please Advice

2 screenshotsAs I wrote, " I can drag the ends of the in/out points, BUT I cant drag the selected area in the source monitor"
Again, the source monitor was just a comparrison, to show that this wasnt a problem only with the program monitor. I posted the image since you didnt understand what I meant.
There are apparent issues with inserting theese clips on the timeline or editing them. I'm sorry if my bad english messes this up
I guess you'll have to include all the info I have written to get a grip of the situation, so I will try to clarify again for you, if you think it will help
- The project I have is sett to 720, 24 fps.
- The clips I use are from 5D MK3, shot in 720, 50fps.
- Some of the clips I interpreted to 24fps for a slomo effect.
- I have QT installed
- All drivers updated
- The interpreted 24fps clips works fine on the timeline.
- But the one that still has 50fps will go black in the program monitor when I try to edit them on the timeline.
- It doesnt matter what I do, ripple edit or just shortens/makes longer, it still gets black.
- If I just drag the marker over the clips in the timeline it looks fine.
- If I interpret to 1-48fps, it works fine. Only 49-50 fps screws it up
- Some problems occur in the source monitor. I CANT drag the full grey selection with the handle in the middle I made with in/out points, as shown in the picture
- I tried to make a new project, same problems.
- Everything worked fine a cople of days ago
I hope this makes it easier to locate the issue.

Second monitor goes "blank" when first monitor goes full screen in Mtn Lion.
Hello Apple community. I am using two monitors and when I put a program like iTunes in fullscreen mode (with the arrow symbol in top right) the second monitor displays that grey patchwork and I can't move windows over there.
My question: Is there any setting to change this (so I could have one screen in fullscreen mode and the other screen on the desktop) or is this just the way it is?
Any info would much appreciated!
Thanks

It's just the way it is.
BetterTouchTool (free app, in the app store) has a little feature that resizes your windows to full size when you drag them near the top edge and returns them to the previous size when you drag them down again. I find this useful when using two monitors (saves you having to resize them manually). -
The backlight went out on my Toshiba laptop so I hooked up a new(er) flat screen monitor to it. The Windows XP startup windows _begins_ but never gets _to_ my desktop. Windows XP startup runs for about 20 seconds and then the monitor reads 'no signal.'
I simply want to access information (files, folders or photos) on the Toshiba before I sent it to laptop paradise forever.Hi
Usually you should be able to switch to external monitor using the key combination FN + F5.
I think this key combination would not work in safe mode since safe mode loads only some essential system processes.
So if you are able to boot the Windows OS in normal mode then check FN + F5
You could also try to change the display settings in graphic display properties -> last tab Settings (to get the display properties click right on desktop and choose Properties )
