Monitor goes blue on startup

Yesterday we had a power failure. All our computers came back fine, except one - MINE! When I went to restart, after saying "Starting Mac OS X", my monitor goes blue. First I ran Apple Hardware Test and it states, "no hardware problems detected". I was told to start up from the cd/dvd for Tiger and then run Repair Permissions from Disk Utility. I held down the "c" key and started from the cd/dvd for Tiger and it took me through installation. After performing the installation, I was prompted to re-start and it did the same thing (blue monitor). Any ideas? Please help!!!
G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

Many Macs, especially G4s, will not boot after a power failure. The solution is to reset the PMU. In your case it's trying to boot but has a problem.
Try a PMU reset. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
When you are troubleshooting a Mac, disconnect all external devices except the kbd, mouse & monitor.

Lol, figured out the first part. Just for those who may be searching, when you click on the Display Preferences, and click on the arraingment tab... it not only shows where your two screens will be displayed, but the WHITE BAR at the top of one screen is the dock/toolbar. Click and hold to grab this and just slide it over to the screen you'd like it to be on.
You have to release it IN the screen box, not on top of it... and it should pop right over to the new (or old) screen. At any rate, you can put the dock on either (or any) screen that you prefer.
I am thinking of ordering more of these. Lol. 3 monitor setup seems like it would be crazy good.
Still looking for the answer to keeping the new 16" screen on the right without switching between screen #s with that... not expose... Lion feature.
Thanks. Hope my other question has an answer out here.

  • Screen Goes Black During Startup (after login)

    Hello,
I have a 2005 Mac Mini PPC OS 10.4.11. This is the first problem I've had since purchasing the computer. This problem popped up out of nowhere. The screen goes black during startup just after I login into my account. I can hear the hard drive spin like it is finishing the startup process. The monitor power button blinks green.
I'm using the digital video cable. I tried switching to the VGA cable but the screen then goes black before the login screen.
The computer will startup in Safe mode.
I've tried Disk Utility (repair disk and repair permissions), Techtool Pro, Drive Genius, ColorSync Utility, Reset Pram, installed latest OS updates, and even re-installed the System twice (once because I removed all the Extension files and then the computer would not startup at all).
I've also tried removing cache files, plist files, startup files, preference files, and some or all of extension files.
The only applications I have recently installed were QuickTime Pro and a .flv movie player; both about a week before this problem started. I tried to uninstall them but could not figure out how.
What is the problem? How can this be fixed?
    Thanks.
    Richard

Howdy. I have Had the same problem as you in regards to a ViewSonic Monitor and the Mac Mini. This is my post:
    Monitor failure when switching resolutions
Using Displays with the Mac mini, Apr 1, 2008, Replies: 2
Running 10.5.2 on Mac Mini G4 1.42 Ghz with ATI Radeon 9200, 32 MB VRAM and ViewSonic VX922
When switching resolutions from 1280x1024 to 800x600 or vice versa, the monitor will cut to black and the power light on the monitor switches from solid green to flashing green. Only by combinations of powering down the mini and starting it up again with the monitor on or off will bring the monitor back to life. This problem makes it difficult to play World of Warcraft amongst other games. Any feedback in regards to this problem would be appreciated.
    Thank You!
At this point, I am unable to switch Monitor resolutions. If I do, the monitor goes black, and I have to power everything down and wait a while before I can restart.
I've resigned myself to not switching resolutions, but I'm wondering if you've had any luck.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Since update download monitor shows "No Signal" and "Monitor Going to Sleep" over and over

I have an HP w2072a Monitor and a Pavillion p7-1436s computer.  I run Windows 8.  Since downloading an update yesterday, I cannot get my monitor to work.  I have unplugged it, plugged it in, tried another monitor, tried another cable, turned the computer off and on several times, played with the sleep button, tried all the buttons on the monitor--nothing works.  If I hit the "On" button, the light turns to blue briefly, I get the screen showing "No signal" then "Monitor Going to Sleep" comes up and the light turns amber---over and over again.  Could this be related to the update I received?  I think the update said it was setting a restore point, but with no monitor, I am stuck!

    Hi dianthus,
Sorry to hear about the issue after doing the update. Do you recall what the update was for? I have included a document regarding your issue.

  • HP Monitor going to sleep on start up

Ok, I've dealt with this problem long enough. I have an HP pavilion Elite, hpe 400f. Monitor worked great on it, then one night while I was checking my email, the picture went scrabled, and ever since I am faced with a "Monitor Going to sleep" error on start up. I can not get into my settings or do anything.
It does not work on other working monitors, I tried a whole new set of cables and when that did not help, I went and bought a new graphics card. That did no good either. But I can not install the drivers until I can actually see how to do it.
So what now? Nothing HP told me works. I am about to go crazy with this.  I've begged HP to help me for a year off and on to no prevail.
    Can you PLEASE help me?

  • Mini ppc w/ beachball problem and attached monitor going black frequently

I am seriously considering replacing this mini. I believe as the poster yesterday concluded that the hard drive in this mini is on the verge of quitting. Reference beachball problem everytime any entry is made. I completely reformatted with zero overwrite and slowness was not cured. Drive is only about 30% of capacity. The attached monitor goes black (not to sleep) this will happen while data is being entered periodically many times a day. The monitor behaves perfectly when connected to another mini with same cables. I think there may be a video output problem. This unit is in a high demand area for making appointments, so I think it is time to replace although I don't want to because of software issues. I looked at external firewire comments, but so far I can't find the drives that will support being start up drives and the video out problem is still an issue. I have also thought of bringing my PPC iMac flat screen from home and upgrading at home, but it is 4-5 years old and I don't want to do this again in 6 months. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks

Have you run the Apple hardware test on it? Or if you have Applecare, the TechTools Deluxe test? To run the Apple hardware test, insert the first OS X disc that came with the system, which should say 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot, holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. Does it identify any issues?
If you click the blue Apple, and about this mac, does the memory show what it should be? If there were a memory issue with the RAM strip, where you were only getting reduced memory, that could contribute to the issues you're seeing.
A number of people with slowing systems, with frequent beach balls, have used OnyX to clean up their system, which has made a performance difference. You can get it from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Run the activities on the maintenance and cleaning tabs, which may require a reboot. Does that help?
One other thought, which is a stretch ... did you upgrade to 10.4.11 through the software update function or by installing the combo update? If by software update, you might want to download the combo version, and install it after you use OnyX. Repair permissions, install it, and repair permissions again, using Disk Utility. It's located at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html

  • Remote display goes blue

Remote Dell LCD display connected to MacBook Pro goes blue after some time, the MacBook display also goes blue. Disconnecting the Dell restores the primary display to life

Actually, I've been having similar problems, just recently. I upgraded the video card in my Mac Pro to the ATI 4870HD (from the ATI X1900 that came with it), which I got from Apple. These problems began after that. The display (a NEC LCD2490WUXi2) is connected via the DVI port (not the mini-display). After sleep, it flashes blue, black, then blue again, then usually puts up desktop. When I switch the monitor to another machine (via a toggle on the monitor itself), then switch it back to the Mac Pro, it flashes blue, static, blue, then the desktop. I wouldn't normally worry much about such things, even though it never did this with the prior graphics card, except for the fact that this morning, when it came out of sleep, it flashed blue, black, blue and then DIDN'T put up the desktop! I unplugged the cable from the Mac Pro, and plugged it back in, and it finally put up the desktop, but now I'm a bit concerned...
At the moment, this is just an annoyance...but if it starts going non-responsive after either sleep or switching the monitor to another computer, or even if I have to unplug the monitor regularly to get it to work after sleep/switching, then it's going to be more than just annoying...

  • Blue screen startup blues....

today i got the update software window so i installed the new updates of itunes, quicktime, and i think os10.4.11...
after it installed and asked me to restart the computer a message came up that said my startup disk space was low, i checked and there was about 600mb available.
i hit restart and now it just goes to a blue screen with the cursor. but just before it goes to that screen, for about 5 seconds a vlack darwin login screen comes up, again, it immediately goes blue after about 5 seconds.
any help from all you smart people out there?? where would the world be without you....?

You posted in 2009 area. Is that what you have?
Those have FW800 only, no FW400, so it seems not.
Scant on details and hardware, but clean install should be tried, and SL brings a lot of new problems so you might even want to test your system with 10.5 or the system it shipped with (10.4.x).
There have been terrible FireWire issues on some machines. Some require a new logicboard, some people buy PCIe FW cards. and isolate audio devices from FW drives (and try not to daisy chain).
LaCie has so many issues with FW ports - the cure is to shutdown and unplug every cable and device. SMC Reset - now done using statup button while unplugged from power source.
I would not put any faith or weight in TechTool Deluxe. if you like. upgrade to TechTool Pro 5.
Zap pram and permissions are not as you found fixing other than it seems temporary and symptom goes away.
bad FW cables can even cause panics; shortouts.
I bought FW800 PCIe almost as soon as I got my Mac Pro 4 yrs August.

  • Screen goes blue

Iphone 5S screen goes blue and shuts down.  Will I need to reboot and how do I do this?

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread and see if that fixes it.
Doing the things in his link is a good start for a monthly maintenance program.

  • Computer goes blue screen and comes back slow

I have a 27 inch 2010 imac and evertime i log in my screen goes blue and my mouse has a hard time moving.  Then after a will the screen goes blue again and my computer fine.  Then a will after my computer goes blue screen and it slow again.  And it keeps doing this like 10 times then it just stopes.  I have no clue whats wrong with it??

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Hi I have used my macbook pro with miniport to HDM, and it was working fine.  Hadnt used it for a month and now when I connect the TV, the screen on the mac goes blue then back to the page but nothing comes up on the TV. Any ideas?

Hi I have a year old Macbook pro.  I was using a miniport to connect it to the TV via HDM cable.   It was working fine but I have used it for a couple of months kept it in a drawer and now it doesnt work.  When connected to the TV the screen on the mac goes blue as though there is some signal then back to original screen but the TV doesnt show what's on the laptop.  Please any suggestions, thanks??

    Hello nothingissecret
Check out the article below for troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. One would be to try a different cable or adapter to test with the television.

  • Late 2012 mac mini display signal drops while booting and monitor goes to sleep

I have a new Late 2012 Mac Mini.  I have had it for a week, what just started happening is that during restart, the video signal drops and my monitor goes to sleep.  I then have to toggle through the input options on the monitor and the video signal is detected again and the monitor wakes up.
Here is what I see - If i shut down and then power back up, I get the grey screen, then the apple logo, then the little status circle spins for a few cycles then stops and then the screen goes black and the monitor says signal lost and then 5 seconds later goes to sleep.
It is possible it is my monitor but, I haven't had any issues with it and i only drops the signal like that during a reboot.

Welcome to the family. Search this forum for the main thread for this problem titled: "mac mini 2012 video blinking out".

  • When exporting images from iPhoto library to Aperture 3 library the highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  This happen to all images in the Aperture 3 library, why?

For some reason all the images in Aperture 3 library have had their highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  I can correct them one at a time with contrast control.  This just happen on its on after I uploaded MOuntain Lion.  Now when I go to transfer images from iPhoto this happens.  The images are all right in iPhoto but this is not the case with Apeerture.  I have 15,000 images in Aperture 3 and I can't afford the time to correct them one at a time.  What is it that I did to cause this problem?

You have "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" turned on.
Toggle this on/off from the View menu.
Thresholds are set at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Advanced".  (I have mine set to 100% ~ it's not clear what the scale is.)
