Monitor HD video in FCP shot on Canon 7D using prosumer HDMI monitor

Hi all,
I recently purchased two items. A 17" MacBook Pro (i7) and a Canon 7D. I would like to come up with a cheap, temporary alternative to buying a Matrox MXO mini box and PCI Express card to monitor HD video.
My question is:
Can I monitor full screen HD video from Final Cut Pro on an HDMI monitor using an Apple mini-DVI cable connected to a non-Apple DVI-HDMI cable?
The idea here is I want to keep my laptop showing the FCP layout and have the HDMI monitor showing just the video output. If this is possible what is the protocol for setting it up? I'm imagining I'm going to have to do some mirroring on in some places and mirroring off in others.
There is a minor caveat. I'll be shooting 1080P and watching it in 720P, but I really don't care. I'm not looking for broadcast quality, just a reasonable monitoring solution that allows me to watch it on something more like a normal output monitor.
Thanks,
Patrick

Hey sc,
This is actually as simple as plugging in an external monitor to your MBPro which it will recognize as a 2nd monitor; do NOT set it to mirror your desktop. In FCP, set your View > Video Playback setting to 'Digital Cinema Desktop Preview'. Your timeline will still appear on the laptop screen, but it will output full-screen video to the external monitor.
To clarify: your laptop does NOT have mini-DVI. It's a mini DisplayPort connector. You'll need the proper adapter to go out to your monitor; depending on the connections it has it's either a mDP to HDMI or mDP to DVI. In this case, I don't think it makes a difference which one you use, it just depends on what ports the monitor has.
FYI get the best monitor you can afford for this. Even if you're not looking for critical color or interlacing (which you will NOT see if you use this monitoring method) get a decent monitor. I've tried using a really cheap LCD with my Canon 7D (both for editing and during a shoot) and the image was such crap that I could barely use it to check focus...

  • Canon 5D Mark II FCP Tutorial Video and FCP Plugin for Sonic Fire Pro 5.1

For those of you using Final Cut Pro 6 to edit 1080p video from the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, there is a video tutorial on lynda.com by Frank Rohmer entitled "Photography Video Workflow: Final Cut Pro + Canon 5D Mark II". I think it does a nice job of providing a workflow for FCP. YOu can view the introduction for free at this link: http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=48108.
There is a new plugin to allow Sonic Fire Pro 5.1 users to score their music directly from within Final Cut Pro and round-trip to Sonic Fire Pro 5.1. You can read about it and purchase it at: https://www.smartsound.com/sonicfire/finalcutpro.html.
I am just a satisfied user of both products and have no commercial link to either lynda.com or Smart Sound.

  • Does Premiere E support video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX?

Does anyone know if I can edit video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX? I did some research but can't find the answer!

Which version of PrE are you looking into? PrE 10 has DSLR Presets that cover the Canon 5D. Not sure about the XDCAM EX, but this ARTICLE covers the supported formats. I know that PrPro CS 5.5 offers full, native support for XDCAM footage, but do not see it in the PrE list.

  • I want to use my macBook Pro 2,2 (mid 2007) to display video being fed from a Canon 5D video out into the vectorscope in Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.  Is it possible to input live video from another digital camera into the MacBookPro

I know that the built in iSight camera records video.  I want to set up a Canon 5D video camera and feed the Canon's video output into the MacBook Pro so that I can use the vectorscope in Final Cut Pro to adjust the exposure of the Canon 5D.  Basically I don't want to buy a vectorscope to have on set to make sure the picture is properly exposed and color balance is correct. (In your response it doesn't have to be the full scenario I've described.  If you can just tell me if there's a way to feed live video into the MacBook and display it on the screen and possibly record it, then I'll figure out the rest.)

    Dear Ben,
Thanks for your help. Apple and I dealt with this. It was an FCP, NOT Motion problem. As It seems you understand, we simply trashed my FCP prefs. Problem went right away.
Thanks. Do you live near Hammond? Played in a rugby tournment down there once. I was transformed.

  • Second Thunderbolt Display Can't Playback Video in FCP

I am looking for a solution to get my 2 Thunderbolt Displays working properly with Final Cut Pro. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Here is what I am trying to accomplish:
    -I have a new MacBook Pro (15" 2.4 GHz i7)
    -I have 2 x 27" Thunderbolt Displays connected
-I want to run FCP so that I can use 1 Thunderbolt as my main work monitor, my MacBook Pro as second work monitor and the second Thunderbolt as a playback monitor.
    Make sense?
The problem is that FCP will not allow me to select the 2nd Thunderbolt for Video Playback. It will only allow me to playback video on my MacBook Pro or on the main Thunderbolt editing monitor (which hides all the FCP windows).
When I have the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode I can get video playback on the second Thunderbolt because then it is the second monitor, however as soon s the MacBook Pro opens up it bumps the second Thunderbolt down in priority it seems.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Could you describe your problem in terms we might find useful.
    For example-
    What format is the material?
What is the model of your computer?
What version of OSX are you running?
What version of QT are you running?
you know, that sort of stuff that tells us something.

  • Can video files made with a Canon XA-10 be imported into FCPX?

Files made with a Canon XA-10 do not seem to be recognized by FCPX.
Recording system of camcorder is  MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.
Is there a format problem or a media conversion that needs to be made?
    Thank you.
    John

Tom is exactly right.  Connect the XA10 to the computer using the USB cable that came with it.  Then go File > Import from Camera.
Up will pop the import from camera window, which should show two cameras -- your Mac's built-in iSight camera, as well as your XA-10.  And you should see the thumbnails from all the various videos you've shot with the camera.  Just select the ones you want to import and click Import.
FCPX will begin importing (and transcoding) the videos.  Do not disconnect the camera while this process is unfolding (it may take a while depending on how many videos and how long the videos are).

  • IMovie footage shot with Canon XL2 looks exports to m4v which looks lousy

Video shot with Canon XL2, captured/imported into iMovie, it looks good in iMovie but when sharing it, it turns into m4v. Is this correct? Burned DVD in iDVD and it looks lousy. Isn't it supposed to be a mov file and not m4v?

Does that require me to get rid of my 100 Hz or 200 Hz screen and exchange it for a 24 Hz screen?
No.  This stuff looks equally good on CRT, Plasma or LCD.  (Though I do recommend leaving off such things as 100 Hz modes, as they have a tendency to produce the opposite effect, making film look more like video.)
Film shot at 24 FPS is shown as 48 half frames,
Where on earth did you get that idea?  Film is always shown theatrically as whole frames, whether 24 or 48 fps.
When will you send me the ticket?
Opening day for my first fiction project will be in my cousin's basement home theater, on a 9 foot screen with overhead projection.  I'll let you know when the release date approaches.  Better get your ticket early, though.  I'm expecting a line all the way around the shed, stretching clear to the garbage cans.

It is very simple. Yahoo uses Microsoft .NET FRAMEWORK Assistant to hijack your browser. Go to the upper left hand corner (Firefox 10 - it might be elsewhere on older versions) and click on the drop down arrow. On the right hand side, click on "Add-Ons", and a list will appear. Locate .NET Framework Assistant. On the right side, click on "disable" and then either click on the small line that says "restart", or simply close Firefox by clicking on the red "X" in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Reopen Firefox and -Voilà, your problem is solved. As far as I am concerned, Yahoo has created a virus when they hijack your preferred browser - a good reason to dump Yahoo for any other use. On the other hand, Microsoft is not innocent in this endeavor. If you want to get rid of the real problem. Dump windows and switch to '''Ubuntu''' Linux. You can find it '''free''' on the internet.

  • TS3850 FCP and old Canon compatability?

Will FCP recognize (and play nice) with video taken on my little Canon FS200 or do I need to get a new/better camera if I want to get FCP?

    Probably.
You will want to transcode to Pro Res.
Download the trial and see how it goes.
    Best of luck.

  • Problem with Print to Video in FCP 6.0

In the past I have been able to print to video with FCP 5, now not working with FCP 6. My Sony HVR A1U is seen by FCP, I can log & capture no problem. When I go to print to video, the sequence does not show up on my camera LCD and I cannot capture it. I have checked the system profiler and under firewire the camera is listed. In the print to video window I have checked Automatically Start Recording, but this has no effect.
    Thank you for your advice

Just curious. How do you get your computer too see the HVR. I am using I movie HD and it does not see anything. Is there a camera setup procedure? I looked at the vague manual which was no help.
    Thanks in Advance

  • Advice on sequence settings - frame size for VHS video in FCP

    Hello,
I was hoping that I could get some advice on editing and output for video captured from VHS Tapes to ensure the best quality possible.
My current workflow to digitize the VHS tapes is:
VHS signal from JVC S7600u with TBC into ADVC 300 (no de-interlace or other filters set) into a Mac Pro via firewire.  Capture preset in FCP is DV NTSC 48khz.
Once in FCP - the captured VHS video frame size is 720 X 480, Vid rate is 29.97, pixel aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601 and field dominance is lower (even)
    My questions are:
If my final destination is for You Tube sharing , are these the best sequence/ frame size settings or should I convert the sequence frame size to 640 X 480, or should I leave at 720 X 480 while working in FCP and then output to Compressor and select the H264 you tube sharing video setting and change the frame size to 640 X 480?
Should I de- interlace for internet/youtube destination?
    Should I de-interlace for DVD/TV destination?
If I want to burn the finished project to DVD and watch the video on a progressive montitor/ TV screen, what would be the best settings/frame size for that?
If any of you out there have experience with editing vcr/analog video in FCP and have a good workflow to ensure best quality, I would really appreciate  any advice/suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

Digitize to 720X480 frame size in FCP. In compressor, your YouTube preset will automatically deinterlace and a square pixel aspect ratio. No deinterlacing for DVD.

I've successfully imported the videos I've shot with my iphone5 into iphoto on my MacBookPro but they're only showing up as still shots, ie the imported videos don't play! Itunes no longer opens automatically when syncing, and when I open itunes it shows that there are zero "home movies" in there, meaning that it never grabbed the videos from my phone either. What to do? Thanks!

    tl:dr?
    Really?
There was a short version expressly for people who weren't bothered to read a myriad of text.
Meh, not that it matters anymore. I ended up redownloading 70-odd albums, so I have the bulk of my music back. And I still have no idea what iTunes did with my files, but I'll make sure it never does it again.
I would thank you for the help but you were utterly useless. Oh well, carry on.

  • No Video with FCP HDV with QTP

    I have a strange question....
I have an Intel G5 iMac (10.4.11) and I capture and edit with FCP 5.0.4 using a Sony Z1 using the HDV 1080i50 sequence (I live in Hong Kong) I edit the video and export Quicktime movie using my sequence preset HDV 1080i50.
I cannot play the exported video with QTP!!
I hear sound but there is no picture. I only have a white screen!!
I can open this video with FCP and it plays fine!!
I can then take this exported video and transfer it to my G5 dual core tower (10.4.11) and the video plays fine in QTP!
I would really like to be able to use QTP to play these videos! Both the iMac and G5 tower have the exact OSX and FCP. The only difference is one is Intel and the other is PPC! Has anyone had problems playing HDV videos on intel macs?
    Any ideas or suggestion?

I've re-installed FCP Studio and the problem still persists....
    any ideas?

  • Is there a way to make digital photos look less like video in FCP?

I know this is probably a question better suited to the Adobe Photoshop forums, but does anyone know a way to make digital photos look more like film than video in FCP? I know about watching for hotspots and such, but is there anything else I can do?
    Thanks in advance,

All links in the chain peddle the bicycle: in this case, I would guess your photography may suffer a bit if your colors are blown out. In assuming you have a chance to rephotograph, establish in your menu that your color temperature matches your lighting. Try K6300 for strobe, K6100 for strobe umbrella, K3100 up or down a few for tungsten: make sure your lights are at 45 degree from your photos, reflection of the camera. Your best bet is to WBalance them, and at all the same exposure, as Automatic tends to give you the neutral color and neutral value. Don't trust automatic unless you're in a pinch. You can also set in your menu a "less vivid" level, but I wouldn't trust this either.
    Good luck.

  • How do I import AVCHD videos into FCP X?

    Hi everyone,
I'm running FCP X on a Macbook Pro (2.3 GHz Intel i5, 4GB RAM), and I am filming with a Sony Handycam AVCHD camera.  I've tried simply importing AVCHD footage from the Handycam using the camera import setting in FCP, and sometimes it will recognize the camera, but usually it will not.  I've also tried importing the footage in iMovie, but I have the same issue.  After I realized that FCP does not communicate well with the camera, I purchased a third party converter called 4Media MP4 converter.  Sometimes this solves the issue and the video will convert to MP4, which I can then edit in FCP.  But most of the time the footage gets converted into slow motion video with regular speed audio.  I've also tried Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac, but the quality from that sucked even worse!
Does anyone know how to make this work?  Am I doomed to be unable to use an AVCHD camera with my Mac?  Are there any better third party converters?

In FCP 7 I'd normally use the Log and Transfer function to convert the AVCHD files to ProRes. However with FCP X you can use the Import from Camera... command in the File menu or the button shortcut for the same function.
This can be done by connecting the camera, or putting the memory card from the camera into a card reader, and then, from within the Imprt from Camera dialogue, selecting Open Archive and select the camera, card or in my case the backup I've made of the card.
I regularly back up my AVCHD files to hard disk, or BluRay data disk, so I can reuse my SD cards but an important thing to remember when doing this is that you need to copy the whole directory structure of the memory card to a new folder on the hard drive. Simply selecting the .mts files won't work as the 'Import From Camera' function needs to see the whole directory structure to interpret the what files are there etc. I create a new folder and then copy all the folders and files on my card into that folder on my hard drive. When selecting Import from Camera/Open Archive I then choose the folder, not the files inside it. Once this is done the video files are presented and I can audition them and choose to import all of them or select the files I want.
None of these methods require the files to be transcoded prior to import. You can choose the transcoding method during import so that either high quality ProRes files are created or Proxy files, smaller and lower quality for editing.
