Monitor is distorted, but ok in safe mode
IMac 2007 has distorted screen, but it runs fine in safe mode. This happened just after a storm came thru our area, but no loss of power, and other machine on same line has no problems. Screen is broken up in jagged "puzzle pieces".
That may be a faulty graphics chip, since graphics acceleration is disabled in Safe mode. Can you boot from a backup before this problem started ? and/or run the hardware test on original install dvd ?
does it look anything like this, and persist even when started from the install dvd, by having it in the drive & holding C after the chime ?

Some programs crash but not in safe mode or for guest user
Hoping that some talented and kind Mac wizard will help me solve a bizarre problem: Some but not all of my programs have started crashing immediately upon launch, but not in safe mode, nor when I log in as a guest user.
The problem began on February 5th, right after I installed an update to my OS (bringing it up to version 10.7.3), which included an update to the firmware for my computer, a Mac mini from mid-2010. The programs that began crashing upon launch *may* be those that were open at that time, but I can’t be sure. They include Adobe Reader, Picasa, Word for Mac, and a sweet little utility called uCalendarX.
Specifically what happens with, say, uCalendarX, is this: After I launch it, nothing appears on screen for a few seconds, and then comes a message that it is trying restore its windows, with a choice of whether to attempt restoring them or not. After a few more seconds comes the news that it has quit unexpectedly. The first several dozen lines of the crash log appear at the end of this posting.
So far my troubleshooting has revealed the following:
(a) When I reboot in safe mode, the programs that crash now work normally.
(b) When I boot the usual way but log on a guest user, the programs that crash now work normally.
(c) Fully emptying the trash made no difference.
(d) The problem was not solved by restoring my hard drive (via Time Machine) to its state the day before I downloaded that update to the OS and the firmware. (This was a drastic step, the intervention of last resort, and I was sure it would work. But no. Perhaps I did not go back far enough for the restoration.)
(e) Deleting the plist files and plist.lockfiles made no difference.
(f) Deleting the files for the app under Saved Application States made no difference.
(g) Disabing the user’s font cache (as happens in safe mode) made no difference.
(h) Uninstalling Adobe Reader, emptying the trash, downloading the latest version, and installing that made no difference – this latest version newly installed continues to crash (but not for a guest user, nor for me, the administrator, in safe mode).
(i ) Repairing permissions on the hard drive made no difference.
I will be mighty grateful for a solution to this perplexing, vexing problem!
B.t.w., I don’t know Unix but was able to do all those (fruitless) interventions listed above.

53 com.riuz.ucalendarx 0x00001e11 start + 4Thanks for thinking about my problem. I've already experimented with creating a new user, a co-administrator. The programs don't crash when that account is running, just as they don't crash when the guest-user's account runs. So it seems that the problem is limited to the default user's account, which is the one that was running when I installed the updates to the OS and the firmware. Another clue is that the programs that crash as soon as they are launched are *probably* the ones that were open at that time in that account. Yet deleting Saved Application States does not keep the programs from crashing when next launched.
So the mystery continues, but these additional facts will help with the diagnosis, I hope.
Thanks again for your suggestion.

i can't see any wrote on firefox page. But when open safe mod (with shift because there is no wrote ) firefox run normally.
Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Time Machine Kernel Panics, but not in safe mode - what should I look for
Hi,
Time machine Crashes (Kernel panic) when Run normally.
When I boot in Safe mode, it runs fine.
Is there a list of programs known to cause issues with Time Machine?
If not where should I look?
I assume my ID's "Login Items" - but is there anywhere else to look?
Here's a list of what I have on my machine that I suspect gets bypassed with safemode:
VMWare Fusion Helper
Dropbox
Clusters Helper
GrowlHelperApp
gfxCardStatus
Cinch
Sizeup
whichdaemon
Xmarks for Safari
LMILaunchAgentFixer
itunesHelper
ThingsHelper
In addition to the above 'Login Items' I also have Mozy home backup installed, Logmein, and istat menus.Well as luck would have it, we can rule out istat menu as well...
After uninstalling istat menus,
It crashed around the 180GB mark.
here is the latest crash dump:

IBook G4 1.2 freezing locking up but fine in Safe Mode
Hi guys and girls,
Couple of day ago my iBook froze. Keyboard lights would work but thats it. I shut it down and tried to reboot. Got to blue screen and froze there. Tried to reboot again this time it reached the desktop but froze a couple of minutes later. Couldn't get more than 2-3 mins out of it.
Ran Disk utlity from the start up disk, used fisrt aid and hardware check and there were no errors although it took a few attempts due to it locking up. Decided to do a complete re-install, this took 2 attempts but didnt solve it still freezes after couple of mins. Sometimes freezes on startup at the blue screen sometimes i get a few mins use then nothing!
This sounds all very familiar from what i've read on these forums but the only difference is that the iBook runs fine in Safe Mode. I'm pretty much a novice at this but does that suggest that its a software issue and not hardware? Is is something to do with the airport since running through Safe Mode the Airport doesnt register as being installed?
Help if you can i'd appreciate any you can offer!!
Many Thanks in advance!
Message was edited by: MonkeyfingerStartup Items are in System Preferences>Accounts>youraccount>Startup Items. To delete them just highlight one and click the minus sign. To test it without deleting any just create a new administrator account. Call it test and set the password as test also (easy to remember). Make sure there are no Startup Items. Log out of your account (Apple Menu>Log Out) and log into the new one or if you're running in safe mode, restart and log into the test account. See if it runs OK. If it does, you know it's something in your account causing the problem.

So, out of nowhere my trusty macbook a few seconds after my desktop appears the computer needs to restart screen scrolls down, and that's pretty much it, as far as i'm aware I haven't changed any permissions and as far as i can see there isn't a programme to blame, as mentioned safe mode is fine, this is how i'm able to write this, is there anything I can do from here to try and fix the problem with the regular login?
Thanks.
Will.If it works in safe mode then that usually means there is something related to system files causing the problem or the installation of incompatible software or malfunctioning software. The simplest solution is to reinstall OS X as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Starting from about 2 weeks ago, Firefox has been crashing. The crashes is seemingly random, but normally happens when many pages/tabs are open. Also, all observed crashes happened in middle of some user operations. If I just leave it open(and loaded), it would never crash even after a long time.
Also, the crashes would still happen even after ALL extensions are disabled manually. However it doesn't seem to happen in Safe Mode.
After every crash, in the crash report dialog, the "Details" report would not respond. However I can open the reports using about:crashes.
Before the crash would happen, sometimes the following ill-behaviors could be observed:
* Firefox fails to render CJK characters, displaying them as square boxes instead
* CJK IME(Namely Google Pinyin, an IME for Simplified Chinese) could no longer be activated in Firefox, neither on a webpage element nor on UIs of Firefox itself(i.e. address bar or search bar)
The following has been tried but no luck:
* Disable ALL extensions manually
* Start a new profile
* Reset Firefox
* Uninstall/Reinstall Firefox
* Switch from FX 14 to 15, then to 16 betahello Rainarrow, some other users who have recently updated the graphics driver for their ati hardware (to ati catalyst version 12.8) have reported similar crashes. please try disabling hardware acceleration in firefox > options > advanced > general & see if this resolves the issue of frequent crashes for the moment.

Hi
I have a presario c700, I have just formatted the hard drive installed vista, as before, computer starts up fine it then installs update sand drivers, i then lose the graphics all I get are multi coloured line on the screen. It works fine in safe mode.
Any help would be great.
ThanksThe video card has gone bad. The issue is video memory. The card only uses video memory above the minimum when Windows is loaded and the driver installed. So you can run in safe mode or even in Windows with default drivers but only when the actual video driver is loaded does the system try to access the higher video memory and it fails. The c700 has the same issues as the ill-fated dv6000 series. Your motherboard can be repaired. If you want more help post back as there are ebay vendors who will repair the motherboard/video card for around $70 and I can find the link for you given a little time.

Search Bar doesn't work in normal itunes but works in safe mode
I am not sure if anyone else is having this problem but with Itunes 11.0.4 The Search bar doesn't work no matter what you type any result you get you click on it nothing happens. I recently went into Itunes Safe mode and the Search bar works fine. I really hope Itunes fixes this with the next update.
Is anyone else having this problem?I've found a solution!
Uncheck the "search entire library" option in the search bar then check it again. -
HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode
Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
1. Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems. But worrying!
2.2 In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3 I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4 I was able to save critical documents to USB............ Phew!
2.5 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine. NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK. Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success. Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working. Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forwardGot to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

0xc0000022 Error when attempting to open, but works in safe mode
Hello All,
I have had an issue opening IE and Firefox from my laptop computer for a few months now...When I click on IE to open a browser window it appears to initiate, the window opens, stays white, show the mouse icon like it is calculating something and then it disappears...on the flip side if I click on the Firefox icon the browser window never appears and I get an error message stating 0xc0000022. I have tried everything I can to remedy this issue from uninstalling firefox and IE from my machine and re-installing to making sure profile folders, etc have been deleted after an un-install of firefox. I did notice that if I go to RUN and attempt to access the firefox profile manager that I get the same error code popping up.
I believe it has something to do with a system update, thinking microsoft update from around August. With that being said I have gone in and removed every update I saw from August and still no luck. Not sure if it helps, but I did notice that I had installed (automatically) the 2975719 microsoft update, which was on a list of not ones you want....
I would appreciate any help I can get to have both of these browsers operate once again! I am currently using Chrome (which I was able to install after all of this began), but I really need the other browsers for testing for my job, so again any help would be greatly appreciated!
Using Sony Vaios laptop and Windows 8.1...
Firefox works fine when in safe mode (with and without networking). I have also tried to disable graphics acceleration and nothing seems to work.
Thanks ahead of time!
BrandonI wonder whether anyone has good documentation or a good comparison tool for Windows Safe Mode vs. regular mode? Microsoft's help article isn't really that helpful:
''If the problem doesn't occur when you restart your PC in safe mode, you can be confident that the basic settings, files, and drivers in Windows aren't causing the problem. Then, use the process of elimination to help you find the cause of the problem. Try starting all of the apps on your desktop that you commonly use one by one (including the apps in your Startup folder) to see if a specific app might be causing the problem. If one of the apps is causing the problem, uninstall it or contact the software publisher.''
One possibly useful tool would be Autoruns, which lists what starts automatically and allows you to disable things. You can find it on Microsoft's site here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Based on experience in the Windows XP days, I don't have much confidence in Windows' System Restore feature, so I'm not sure whether to suggest it in this case. If you are inclined to try it, please make a backup of your Firefox settings because that folder will get rolled back, which could cause data loss (e.g., recent bookmarks, history, etc.). See: [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]. -
ITunes does not respond when opening, but works in safe mode
Hey there
So over the last two days or so, my ITunes (Latest version 11.1.4.) on MacBook Pro opens fine but then as soon as I click whatever, it gets stuck on the spinning wheel. I have now read that you can open it in Safe Mode by shift-option-command and click on iTunes on the desktop, which works fine, but is not the ultimate solution.
Would you please have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?
Thank you very much already!
Kristin(It may be reacting badly with the new iTunes version, even though it's been okay with earlier ones.)
b noir, just to confirm - the "Quartz Composer Visualizer.bundle" is working very well on my Mavericks MBP with 11.1.4. Only the Music Visualizers bundles, that need iTunes to run 32bit mode, will no longer run in iTunes 11.1.4., e.g. the iVisualize bundle and the visualizers "Be Composed", etc.
Perhaps is something in the iTunes Visualizer folder, that uses quartz filters requiring advanced features of the graphics card, and therefore disabled in Safe Mode. -
Crash Affecting only One Login - But Not in Safe Mode
I have an iMac (built-in iSight) that suddenly has problems with only ONE login (the other accounts on the machine work fine). The troubled login won't mount the desktop at all, even with the entire library folder removed. Ran DW utility, but that didn't help. The interesting thing is, if I boot in SAFE mode, the problem goes away.
What am I missing? If there's a problem with some bit of startup code, driver, etc., why is it only affecting one login?
I realize my info above is sketchy. Hoping it might be enough for somebody to offer a clue... thanks.Hi, Lonestar.
An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. In this case, it would likely be a Login Item defined in the affected account. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem. Focus on the instructions concerning Login Items with the affected account.
Good luck!

Kernel Panic/"broken folder" icon but boots in safe mode
I'm totally puzzled.
When I boot the computer either from the HDD or my bootable back-up, i get the broken folder icon.
But i can boot just fine in safe mode from the HDD - in fact, that's how i'm typing this message right now.
I have turned off all login items.
I repaired permissions on disk utility.
What else can i do (short of my genius bar appointment tomorrow morning)?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
I assume restoring from my backup HDD won't work since I can't boot from it?

As said above I just installed what size Mac and now my computer won't start. As soon as I downloaded it my computer was a little glitch but regarded it as nothing. my computer was later really buggy so I decided to restart it. My computer now will not restart/turn on no matter if it is in safe mode or not. In safe mode it gets around a third of the way and then the progress bar disappeared then the gear remains for a second then the screen goes black then that is it. By the way I have OS X Maverick's .1 or.2, maybe .3 but I doubt it. PS if you can tell me a legit application that will declutter all this space I seemed to have used, yet have no idea HOW! Thanks.
