Monitor is very dark but not black

The monitor seemed to have gone dead a while back. I reset the PMU, and now I can very vaguely see the desktop, but it's way too dark to use. Is it the backlight that's gone out? Or is there some way to adjust brightness levels (without seeing the screen well enough to navigate!) to bring it back to useful levels?

I can't believe I found the solution 2 minutes after posting. Here is the link & a brief synopsis of the correction. At least my correction anyway.

1. Open System Preferences and click Keyboard & Mouse to display its preferences.
2. Click the Trackpad tab. These controls let you set the trackpad sensitivity to control how fast the arrow flies across your screen when you move your finger across the trackpad, and adjust for your double-click reflexes.
3. To control how fast the arrow moves across your screen, move the Tracking Speed slider left to slow it down, or right to speed it up.
4. To set your computer's reaction to your double-click speed, move the Double-Click Speed slider left if you tend to click slower, or right if you've got an itchy trigger finger.
5. If you want to add double-click functionality to your trackpad, select the Clicking checkbox below Trackpad Gestures. You can also select the Dragging and Drag Lock checkboxes if you'd like to drag items using the trackpad.

  • Very loud, but not constant

I've had my PowerMac G5 for about a year and a half now. Recently, it's been performing very loudly, but not constantly. I know there are dozens of topics about loud G5s, but I didn't catch any that were not a constant loudness.
It performs beautifully, and is very quiet most of the time. If I leave it on and go read a book, for instance, it will stay quiet, so it's only when I am using it. I'd say it occurs every 15-20 minutes or so, where the fans really kick in and things get pretty noisy. My CPU temp. is at a constant 77-80 (or so my widget says), so I didn't think anything's wrong.
Just checking to see if this sounds normal. Sometimes it's as little as using Safari and listening to iTunes. Doesn't have to be rendering video or anything.
    Appreciate any help.

I'm not really sure what any of the
    three settings mean specifically.

  • Letterboxed area is dark grey, not black

When I use Compressor 3.0.2 to encode to MPEG-2 video that's cropped and padded to 2.35 AR inside a 16:9 frame, the letterbox area isn't a true black. It's a very dark gray, but not quite black. Anyone else notice this?

    here's a screenshot:

notice the letterbox area is slightly lighter than the black in the movie.

  • Screen goes dark..not black

    Hi
Last night my computer screen went dark. I could still see what was on the screen but it was very very dark. Had to force quit with power button. Computer came back on and was fine. Now this morning when I went to power on, it powered on fine then a few minutes later same thing happened. It happened a few times and then the last time I powered up it hasn't happened. Any suggestions?
    Thanks
Update: happened a couple of times today.

Same thing here.  Started happening a few days ago.  Usually, all I have to do is close the laptop and open it up...doesn't usually work the first time, but after 2 or 3 times, it will come back on and there is no problem.  I have no idea what is going on.  Mine is a 2008 macbook.

  • HT1923 ipod library grey but not black or able to play?

I have connected opod classic to laptop and it sychs and shows connected and the list of songs.  However you cannot play music becaus the list of songs is grey and not black lighting up the play button.

QuickTime expects video files with separate video and audio tracks, but many MPEG formats used a muxed (multiplexed) single track that contains both. Therefore, when you convert videos in iTunes to iPod format they only show the video and no sound since iTunes (really QuickTime) is not looking for the audio track within the video track and it gets lost.

One way to work around this is to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the files to fix this issue...

but there are other applications besides MPEG Streamclip you can try as well.

  • Very simple, but not working Table to Flat File

I'm new to ODI, but I am having too much difficulty in performing a very basic task. I have data in a table and I want to load the data to a flat file. I've been all over this board, all over the documentation, and all over the Googles, and I can not get this to work. Here is a run down of what I have done thus far:
    1. created a physical schema under FILE_GENERIC that points to my target directory
    2. created a logical schema that points to my new physical schema
    3. imported a test file as a model (very simple, two string columns, 50 chars each)
    4. set my parameters for my file (named columns, delimited, filename resource name, etc.)
    5. created a new interface
    6. dragged my new file model as the target
    7. dragged my source table as well
    8. mapped a couple of columns
    9. had to select two KMs: LKM - SQL to SQL (for the source) & IKM - SQL to File Append (for the target)
    10. execute
Now, here is where I started hitting problems. This failed in the "load data" step with the following error:
    +7000 : null : java.sql.SQLException: Column not found: C1_ERRCODE+
I found a note on the forum saying to change the "Staging Area Different From Target" setting on the Definition tab. Did that and selected the source table's schema in the dropdown, ran again. Second error:
    +942 : 42000 : java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist+
This occurred in the "Integration - insert new rows" step.
The crazy thing is that in a step prior to this ("Export - load data"), the step succeeded and the data shows up in the output file!
So why is ODI trying to export the data again? And why am I getting an ORA error when the target is a file?
    Any assistance is appreciated...
    A frustrated noob!

I found the answer. But still not sure why this matters...
Following this tutorial, I recreated my mapping:
I was still getting the same error. I reimported my IKM and found that the "Multi-Connections" box was unchecked before and now it was checked. I may have unchecked it in my trial & error.
Anyway, after running the mapping again with the box checked, the extract to a file worked.
So, I'm happy now. But, I am also perturbed with the function of the this checkbox and why it caused so much confusion within ODI.

I can't print in black and white with my HP Photosmart C5180 all in one. I put in a new cartage and it still only print in color without black ink. I've tried uninstall and reinstall the drivers that did not work. When I use HP solution center I used the “align the print head” the box form left to right blue, red, and yellow all are light in color and the four is brown. Can anyone help

  • IMac Suddenly Very Slow-But Not Slow in Windows?!?

    This is very odd.
I have a brand new iMac, no more than a couple weeks old.
Just upgraded to 10.6.3 as well with no issues. Now i booted into Windows 7 with no issues, But when i tried booting back into Mac OS, Start up took 10 mintues, and when i'm using finder etc, it locks up for a few minutes then finally regains some function.
Now it's not a app issue, tried Safe Mode, no apps or start up items etc running to cause this problem, Ram is good, 8GB, Per Disk Utility, Hard Drive SMART status is Verfied, and Disk comes back as no repairs needed. Tried Reparing permissions to no luck, ran Hardware test, all passed, booted from external 800 drive with much faster results. Tried PRAM reset to no luck either.
To me, it seems like such hard drive issue, but as i'm writing this, i'm booted into Windows 7 since on the Mac OS side, it seems to lock up the Hard Drive.
Booting into Windows 7 seems to run at full speed with no lock up or freeze issues.
My specs are iMac 10,1 3.33 Dual Core, 8GB Ram, ATI 4670.
So any ideas what to do next??

Me too, hard drive 'clicks' and 'knocks' on start up or even just randomly during use. Had a kernel panic too the other day where it didn't find any bootable discs.
I think the HD is on the way out but this system has been fine for years under leopard and windows XP. It began about a week or less after I upgraded to snow leopard and windows 7.
Similar problems seem to have been reported many times before albeit under slightly different conditions yet no fix is forthcoming from Apple yet it seems.

  • Since upgrade to mavericks pages will no longer print black text, color ok but not black

I recently updated to mavericks, since then any document I try to print in pages will only print the color portion. No black text will print. Have tried 2 different inkjets but with the same result.
    Thanks

  • My g4 running tiger won't startup, got the sound and apple on screen but after that the screen is just blank but not black!

was working fine, today I startup and all seems normal but after the apple logo it just won't start, the screen is just blank.

    Hi there,
Does it boot with the Option/alt key held down & show boot choices?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

  • Screen goes dark, but not blank

As of today, my first-gen iPod nano doesn't quite turn off right. When the backlight goes off as normal, the information stays on the screen. It basically looks like it's always on, even if it's only displaying the main menu and no sound is coming out of it. Apart from being annoying, I worry this will eat the battery or wreck the screen. I haven't found anything that works, and although I can still reset the whole **** thing, I'm loath to. So if anyone knows a fix for it...

Have you updated Photoshop to version 11.0.1?
    Try resetting the Photoshop preferences.
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
    See: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
