Monitor local network connection

Is there an application that would allow me to monitor the performance of a network? Lets say I have an office with 50 computers, and we've been experiencing problems with speed or connection, I'd like to know (or see) if there's a computer, among the 50, that is causing this, or if the problem shows up at the router (or anything else).
I've heard of NetMonitor and NetMonitor Sidekick, but it would seem (of what I've read in their site) that it only monitors the computer that has the software installed.
Any recommendation?

It depends on how your network is setup, most networks use switches these days so you would only ever see traffic on on any port that is destined to go to the computer on that port. That would only be useful if the machine causing the problem was flooding all the ports with traffic.
If you have a managed switch or a better still a managed switch backbone you should be able to use the software on the switch to find out which port if any is causing the traffic, or use software on a client machine designed to poll the switch and present the information in an easy to use form.
My networking skills are rusty, you may be better asking on a networking forum for the type of switches you use.

  • Batch Monitor - incoming network connection

When I run Compressor i get the "Do you want the application "Batch Monitor.app" to accept incoming network connection. Whilst this is a common popup for lots of apps the problem with this one is that it only flicks onto the screen for about 3/25's of a second and then disappears only to keep on popping up in this manner.
It's very annoying. Does anyone know how to deal with this ?
In order to identify this I had to film the screen and then work my way through the footage frame by frame to isolate it.

Hardly that absurd. Compressor, for example, is designed to network with other instances across the network to distribute render processing...
If you're distributing an Export via Compressor from FCP, FCP is started on the networked computers to do local rendering...

  • Windows local network connection

    Hi,
I have a new macbook air, and I want to connect to to a share printer.
I can't find a way to find the local network already set-up (all windows PC).
Does somebody knows how to connect to the local network ? (i am connected to the wifi already)
    Thanks !!!

It can take a while before a Windows computer can be seen by OS X. If you open Finder and look in the Sidebar, under the heading of Shared you should see a Windows computer that is set to the same IP subnet as the Mac and the wifi router. If you don't see it then open Network Utility and select the ping tab. Enter the IPv4 address being used by the Windows PC and press Ping. If there is a working path then you should get a reply to each ping packet sent.
If you do get replies to the ping test then open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button and then select the Windows icon, you will see a 3 column window. The first column is for the workgroup name, which is often workgroup or mshome depending on the version of Windows being used. By default the Mac will be set to a name of workgroup. If you do see workgroup then select it and you should then see the name of the Windows computer in the second column. If you don't see anything here then you may need to wait a bit longer.
Note that if you have Windows 7 or 8, they have a Windows to Windows facility called Homegroup and if this is enabled then this can stop the Mac from seeing the PC. You can disable Homegroup via Control Panel > Network & Sharing Centre.
Once you do see the Windows computer name, when you select it you will be prompted to authenticate. Here you need to enter your Windows user name and password. Once entered you will then see the printer share.

  • Problems recognizing a local network connection

Perhaps someone can let me know whether this is a sw/hw problem or operator error...
My Power Book was working fine for the first several weeks, including Internet access through a cable modem attached to a small inhouse network. Without warning several weeks ago, though, it stopped recognizing the internet connection (the cable plugged into the computer). I plugged the computer into all the other cable connectors on the home network (that the family's other computers are normally connected to without problems.), with the same results.
Is this a problem with my computer or does it look like some service was inadvertantly disabled? HELP!!!

Make sure cable from cable modem is plugged into WAN-IN slot, Check lighting signal from modem if connection/link lights is off ISP problem. If lights on router problem. Call ISP.

  • Local Network Connection Problem with SQL Server 2008 R2

    Hi,
I have CRM application which uses SQL server 2008. Weird thing is that I have no problems connecting from client machines to the server when using a particular router (via LAN) and when I upgrade the firmware of the same router (A common open source firmware
which is used by many also works perfect apart from mentioned problem) and restart the server, the connection cannot be established. I get Error 40.
When i downgrade the firmware and restart the server, the connection works again.
Please note that I am absolutely not touching any configuration of the server. Also the CRM software allows remote connections from public IPs which this feature works fine with both downgraded and upgraded firmwares.
As for my understanding, the routers do not block ports in LAN connections. So how can I diagnose the reason for this connection problem?

    Hi Leony83,
Please also help to check Windows Event Log information regarding this issue, so that we can do further investigation. In additin, here is the general steps to troubleshoot SQL Server Error 40 issue. Please see:

  • DNS not resolving on one Mac but the other works fine in same local network

Snow Leopard is doing something strange to the DNS or the permission to ping.
I have 2 Macs on the same local network, connect through the same ISP (verizon FIOS). One has no problem resolving any domain, but the other is constantly not resolving some domains.
    The problem progresses like this:
    * All of a sudden, DNS is not resolving from Ethernet (when it did perfectly well a minute ago).
    * Then I switched to wireless (using the same LAN), and it resolved fine.
    * Then it failed completely a few minutes later.
    * Then I reboot my Mac, and it seemed to clear that, and worked for a day.
    * Then it failed again in both Ethernet and Wireless; rebooting does not fix it.
    * I cleared all the caches using Onyx, did "dscacheutil -flushcache", zapped the PRAM, reinstalled 10.6.2 combo update, repaired the permission, nothing works.
    * Since the unresolved domain is my own domain, I changed the nameserver, and waited for it to propagate to see if that may be the problem, since it appeared that it is not resolving the A Record, and I waited 72 hours, and it is not resolved or propagating to the local DNS, but it worked perfectly well on my other Mac within the same network.
    * Then I added other DNS, such as google DNS 8.8.8.8 or openDNS servers to it, but it didn't fix anything.
    * Then I "ping" either the unresolved domain or my own Mac .local, and it gave me the error "permission denied". (Whereas I have no problem pinging my own Mac or the unresolved domain in my other Mac that works!).
    * Then I "sudo ping" the unresolved domain or my own Mac, and it pinged perfectly well.
    * Then I tried "ping6" my own Mac or the unresolved domain on the broken Mac, and it worked fine!
    * Also, I used http://network-tools.com to ping it, and noticed that during the trace, somewhere along the route through te7-2.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com and po2.car04.dllstx5.theplanet.com, it timed out along the route, so I don't know if the timeout could have been causing the reject, but I doubted, because "sudo ping" locally will get through but "ping" does not.
So I think I traced the Snow Leopard DNS problem as follows:
    * Why does "ping6" works, but "ping" permission is denied unless the user is root?
    * I tried to "chmod 4755 ping" but it won't let me.
    * Is it because DNS is resolving using IPv6 but not IPv4?
    * Or is Snow Leopard somehow screwed up the permission to access ping or similar DNS service?
    * Why DNS has no problem in one Mac but caused problem on the other Mac, even though they are in the same local network?
    * The only difference between the Macs maybe because I have Parallels installed in the Mac that failed to resolve DNS (with the extra Parallels Shared Ethernet), which may be interfering with it, but I tried to turn Parallels Shared Ethernet off, and it did not fix the problem.
Can anyone help or have any idea that I can fix this nagging bug with DNS? The DNS had worked before, but it simply quit working all of a sudden, and nothing can resurrect it.
    Thanks.

Shut down Parallels and restart w/o letting any of Parallels TCP/IP stack resurrect itself. So many network issues with VM solutions. See if the problem persists. Create a new account and ping from there. Are your search domains manually entered on the 10.6 box?

  • Lookout connect PLC through local network

Hello, I am a new Lookout user.
Can I connect my PLC (with Modbus TPC module) with my PC (with Lookout) through the local network (i.e. connecting them by a switch box or router)?
We need to monitor our system but we don't want to put our PC on site. We are planning to setup a switch box on site and connect it to PLC with Modbus TPC module. Is it possible?

It is a networking problem. Actually Lookout doesn't know if there is a switch or not. Lookout just uses the ip address and port to make the connection. So you need to be able to ping the remote Modbus device's ip address and the port is not blocked.

  • How can I  connect to SQL server database thru local network by using JSP?

I'm currently doing a project by using JSP..And I need to display record from the SQL Server database in our school's local network. May I know how can I do that? How can I write the code so that I can able to access the SQL Server databsase Throught school's network by using JSP? Please tell me step by step how can I do that. I'm using Tomcat 4.1 as Web Server. And I had J2SE and J2EE installed in my computer.

first you have to establish a ODBC DSN on your computer,
that connects to the database...you can do that from your control pannel.
i assume that the TOMCAT server is residing on your computer....(if the webserver is in other computer then you would have to create a System DSN on the data sources ODBC option in the settings>control pannel of that machine)
then you can use that DSN name to connect to the data base from the class file....for further assistance on how to create the class that access the tutorials in sun site.

  • IPhone no longer connects to my computer over local network through apps

I've been trying to fix this for months. I've worked with technology and Apple computers for three years. I am by no means an expert but you can believe me when I say I've tried all the basics.
I first noticed the problem using FullControl. I liked to use this first thing in the morning. One morning it wouldn't connect, "Error: Connection error (22)." I hadn't updated or changed anything. I actually put my computer to sleep the night before using the app! I was on the local network. My computer was running the helper. My computer was showing up as a device in the app. But it would not connect. I figured something was wrong with the app.
So I opened up Splashtop 2. My iMac showed up in my list but with a satelite icon informing me it was not connecting on the local network. I was still on my wifi as was my computer. I used it earlier that week.
I checked out the support pages for both apps. I updated everything. I turned off, on, and checked the connections for my firewall. I turned off my security applications and followed guides to remedy blocks they might cause. Nothing worked.
I checked Apple discussions and found people having similar issues but no one had a fix. A few found success but nothing worked for me.
A few days later I went to use my Remote app. My iTunes Library showed up in the local devices but it would not connect, "Remote can't connect to your iTunes library. Check your network settings and try again." I checked. Tried again. "Could not find [my] Library." I went back to the devices and connected to my Apple TV 2 instantly. I tried connecting my iMac with the Apple TV and found no issues. Each communicated with the other fine. I tried to connect Remote to my iTunes again but it failed.
I verified and repaired my permissions. I thought the "SUID... ARDAgent.app... [permission] has been modified and will not be repaired" could've been the problem but Apple and these Discussions assure me that this is normal and not a problem.
I recently downloaded Air Playit and ran into the same problem. I set it up on my computer following the instructions. I opened the app. The app showed my computer as a "Computer on Local Network" but when I tried to connect to server, "Connect Server Failed: Cannot connect the server, check the IP, Port and try again." I did and it didn't connect.
Save for this new app, everything worked before. Nothing has worked since that morning FullContol failed (including the new app).
Is there an answer out there?!

Intego's VirusBarrier X6 was blocking my iPhone's connection.
I saw that the program was blocking attempts to connect and took the address off the Blocked list. I instantly connected through everything again. It turned out to be a major oversight and easy fix!
If anyone else is having similar issues, check your AntiVandal software and make sure your devices are not being blocked.

  • Office Word 2008 crashes when trying to open a local stored document ONLY if network connection is down

Sorry to bother you all but I have a situation I can't find a solution for:
on a MBP 2009, running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and MS Office 2008 (up to date), if I open a local stored document AND the unit is connected to the network everything works fine.
As soon as I switch off the network connection and I open a local stored document Word freezes and within "Force quit..." I can see that Word is no longer responding. A few minutes later OS X quits Word and that's it.
I already checked Safe boot, removing the Microsoft plist's and reinstalling MS Office 2008 including all available updates but the situation is still the same.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
