MONITOR MADNESS - Is it Leopard ? My graphics card perhaps ? HELP

Friends,
I am going nuts ( no don't answer that one ! ).
Recently ( possibly after the 10.5.2 graphics update - I can't exactly recall ) my LG flat screen monitor has started to look like a grainy 60's acid art house experiment !!
It is subtle but most disconcerting as I use my beloved G5 every day with Logic P8.
I have tried changing settings - calibration the lot... but still it looks strangely weird - like a TV that is not quite tuned in.
Gradients and shaded areas have weird lines instead of fine tones and artifacts appear around type and lines where was once beautiful and clear graphics.
When I first bought the LG 204WT 20" monitor 5 months ago it was fine !.
I have been using the recommended DVI output and tried different cables and the alternative input - the effect is still there but not quite as bad when using connector to RGB input.
The shaded areas in finder and Logic are almost transparent and grainy with a light blue / pink halo like effect around windows and graphic boxes - *I don't know how to explain it really but I do hope someone out there may have some answers or at least have an inkling of what I'm trying to describe..*
As if I couldn't make matters worse I did an archive and install to roll back to 10.5.1 early hours of this morning - this didn;'t cure the problem and I lost the use of some music plug -ins and authorizations in the bargain.. Maybe it is time to call it a day and take a long break.
Really I should get a pen and paper and sit with my guitar an a darkened room for a few days.
I called the Mac shop where it was purchased then LG but with no help, advice or offers to replace it.
I guess the monitor basically works but this strange behaviour is arguably quite subtle and may not be considered 'serious' by most people !
*In the meantime if any of you lovely people could take my situation seriously and offer any practical advise I would be most appreciative.*
Many thanks - not quite lost it yet - Paul

Hello,
Perhaps my problem is related?
Today, I installed Leopard 10.5.2 on a LaCie Quadra FW disk with my G5 2x2.3, 4.5 GB RAM, GeForce 6600 graphics card with one Samsung 18" and one LaCie 20" monitor. This combination (less the FW disk) has worked (and works) perfectly with Tiger.
Also, directly after installing, both monitors showed what's expected.
However, after restarting (also restaring after updating from 10.5.0 to 10.5.2) the image on both monitors is scrambled in vertical bands!
After learning how to get hold of the Monitors settings panel, just by a fluke I decided to checkmark 'Screen Doubling' (equivalent; sorry, running a Swedish System), which made the scrambled stripes go away. Then, when unchecking Screen Doubling again, everything was back to normal.
After restarting again, the problem was back, and had to be dealt with as above...
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone with a similar experience.
Switching back to trusty old Tiger, everything is normal as ususal, so there's apparently no hardware problem involved.
Best regards,
Joey

  • I am looking for a new graphics card to help with my 1.5GB files in InDesign.

I am getting "Out of memory " indications as my files gets to the maximum number of pages in my magazine. I am guessing that I need a larger capacity graphics card to help during the construction of the magazine. Any thoughts?

I have a Lenovo desktop with win8 and 16GB memory. I have an upgraded graphics card with 2GB memory. I am using CS6. My free drive space is in the 300GB range. I keep all data off line on a 1TB Buffalo drive. I am producing a 52 page color magazine that is filled with graphics and ads (40%). I rarely import graphics files and normally always link them. As I am moving around my file sometimes processing is slow. I have turned off the pre-flight and only use it when I am ready to go to the printer. That helps. I wopuld like to get back to sub-second response time and thought a better performing graphics card would help.

  • FCP, Leopard and graphics card combo won't launch

After upgrading to Leopard when I run FCP I get a
"Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card"
I am running 10.5.1 on a 2x 2.66 Dual core Mac Pro, my graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
FCP 6.0.2 with all Pro App updates
Before I start poking around in the .plist file to try and fake it out, is anyone else seeing this?

Well, that is not how I read it. The 7300 GT is even listed under Motion as acceptable. A 7800 is recommended under the Motion specific area, but not under Final Cut.
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html
Oddly enough, I think it may be my Cinema Display (older 20") which does not support it, or the ADC-DVI conversion in line... as that was also swapped in when I upgraded. I will try my other monitor where it was working fine.
I just find it hard to believe that a 256mB PCIex16 card purchased in 2006 in an Intel MacPro won't support Final Cut. I mean, my old G4 Powerbook with a 128MB ATI card does and it is at least 4 years old.

  • Need a Graphics Card Recommendation & Help

I am currently using a Radeon x1900 512MB card. It seems to work well for video editing, and I've enjoyed it. But I am really wanting to get into gaming on Windows with Boot Camp (flying and racing simulations), and although I have a lack of knowledge with video cards, I believe I can do better with what I have right now.
I know that the nVIDIA 8800GT is available. I just have a few questions about possible configurations. Please answer them all if possible.
[*] Does gaming work well with the 8800GT on Windows even if there is no official driver for it on Windows? (this is what I have read)
[*] Would I see a decrease in performance with things like video editing, etc, if I got the 8800? Does it work well with video editing?
[*] The Mac Pro has more than one slot for video cards. I am not against using more than one if possible! What do you recommend, and which cards can have two in the machine?
[*] Is it possible to use 2 8800's in the machine? Would both PC games and the Mac recognize a total of 1GB to handle gaming and video editing better?
[*] Is the Radeon 3870 a better fit than the 8800?
[*] What's the best solution in your opinion with my needs and requirements?
I do appreciate your time and feedback! Thank you.

    1. 8800GT is great for Mac games, can't tell ya on Winderz.
    2. A graphics card is almost irrelevant for video editing. It's the absolute last place to look for a bottleneck. Google "video editing bottleneck" and what you'll get is arguments about 2 vs. 4 cores, and how many HDs you have. Not what video card to use. Incidentally, if you want to buff your video editing speed, put 3 or 4 HDs in your Pro and set one or both pairs up as striped drives (RAID 0), then put all your software on one and use the other as a scratch/render disk. Drives are too cheap to be the thing slowing you down.
3/4. At this time I don't think multiple video cards can get you anything besides more monitors. The Crossfire/SLI setup, where two cards share the load of generating graphics for one monitor, isn't possible on Macs that I know of. Might be a hack for Winderz bootup, you'd have to research that, but you'd probably have to monkey with it each time you rebooted.
    5. A bit of research on Google sez that the 8800 is a better card unless you have an older slow processor. Which you do not. So for gaming especially I'd take the 8800... although it's overkill for most non-gaming apps. You're paying for 3D power.

  • Problem with MSI GTX 960 GAMAING 4G graphics card - Please help

So I just bought an MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G graphics card. My problem is that it seems to randomly decide when it wants to run fine at 1215 MHz, and when it wants to downclock to around 135 MHz. Today for example, I was playing Witcher 3: Game was running fine (~55 FPS) for a few hours because the card was performing at maximum. Then, out of nowehere, I dropped to about 4 FPS. I checked Afterburner, and the core clock went down to 135 MHz, while I was still in game. The card is not overheating during gaming. I have the fans set to 35% speed at all times and the GPU never got hotter than about 50c.
I have the latest nVidia drivers installed. I even tried an earlier set of nVidia drivers and the same things happened. Also yes, it is firmly seated in the PCI-E slot and yes, the power cable is firmly plugged in.
    PC Specs:
    Intel Core i5 Devils Canyon
    Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI mobo
    GSkill Sniper 16GB RAM
MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G graphics card
    Antec EDGE 550w PSU
I understand these newer graphics cards have power saving settings built in, but I have my nVidia control panel settings to "Prefer maximum performance" and it doesn't seem to help. It seems my card is putting itself into power saver mode at will. I suppose my PSU could be the culprit even though the recommended PSU is only 400w, and I have 550w. Any ideas?

So it turns out I wasn't running the latest BIOS for my motherboard. I updated my BIOS and cleared CMOS. Everything was running fine for a couple hours. I was playing Witcher 3 at full clock and memory speed. GPU temp was hovering around 62 deg c at 60 FPS. Then after a couple hours, the game crashed. Rebooted my computer, and now I am back to the same issue where the card won't run at full speed in a 3D application. Even ran the Valley benchmark tool again and the card didn't increase speed to compensate.
Do I have a defective card? If so I will get it replaced from Newegg.
Also I don't know if I am running the latest vbios. GPU-Z says I have 84.06.14.00.F3
If there is a newer vbios, I can try to update and see if that does anything. I will try anything before returning this to Newegg. My old video card bit the dust and artifacts everywhere, so I don't have a temp replacement.

  • Adobe photoshop cs4 graphics card acceleration help!

    Need a little help,
everytime i start cs4, it says "adobe photoshop cs4 now includes graphics card acceleration.  we recomend you vist your video card manufacturers website and download and install latest drives.
I am running vista 64 bit and a ati radeon hd 4800 series card "4870 to be exact" and under properties it is 8.612.0.0, but when i follow the adobe link and it brings me to the site it has version 9.5??  i clicked update driver and it says its upto date, is this a problem, and why does it show this everytime photoshop starts?
    thanks

Go to this site and download the 9.9 driver set. The 9.5 driver set had a streaming problem that had to be fixed with a hotfix. I have the 4870 also and the 9.9 drivers are stable and have no issues with PS CS4 on vista 64 bit.
    http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx
Sometimes it is better not to change drivers if you don't have issues. But the 9.5 set has issues.
Make sure you un-install the old drivers. When you click on the Icon and start the install it will unpack as normal but you will come upon a screen to install or uninstall. Choose uninstall to remove the old driver package. Reboot. Then click on the icon again, it will unpack and you will get the screen again so choose install. Reboot after install.
If I remember correctly the 9.5 drivers, after install, did not show the reboot screen. You still have to reboot.

  • Bug in screensaver OR graphic card? Help me figure this out

I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz purchased in late September 2009. There is an odd bug that shows up in the mosaic screensaver (the one that represents one of your iPhoto pictures using a mosaic of your other photos) when I use the "Better Graphics" settings. If you have a similar computer, see if you can replicate this bug and let me know I'm not crazy...
This 10.6 standard screensaver shows a single picture, then zooms out to show that picture as part of a mosaic that represents one of your other pictures in iPhoto. When the photo mosaic is complete, it gradually dissolves into the actual photo, then repeats the process using that photo as part of a mosaic.
This screensaver works perfectly when running on the default NVIDIA GeoForce 9400M graphics card. When I switch to "Higher Performance" graphics and use the NVIDIA GeoForce 9600M GT card, the final image before the dissolve flips upside down, then dissolves into a right-side-up version of the image and starts the mosaic process again. Very odd!
I have noticed no other issues on my computer when using "Higher Performance" graphics, but this one is weird and disturbing because it is in an Apple screensaver. Any thoughts or experiences with this?

Thanks for the suggestion - after someone else reproduced the problem on their MacBook Pro, I submitted a bug report. It's not a big deal, but this should probably be fixed.

If the card did not work in another PC, especially if the other PC had a PSU >=500 Watts and both PCIe power connectors were connected, then the card itself is likely to have issues.

  • HP Pavilion A6603W Graphics card upgrading help.

    Current Graphics card:
GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i (integrated into motherboard as a chip)
    Power supply#: ATX-250-12Z-REV-D7R  (250 Watts I believe?)
Computer Model: ( HP Pavilion A6603W)
Problem: Trying to figure out which is the best graphics card to upgrade with to keep up to date with the current games, such as : Battlefield, bad company 2, Just cause 2, Amnesia: Dark descent.
Now as for the power supply, I am sure Ill need to upgrade that as well. But I found a pretty reasonable one online at fry's electronics:
    http://www.frys.com/product/5503410
But as for the graphics card, I am completely lost here at what I kind I can buy and not buy. most of my games require to have at least DirectX10 or higher, which my graphics card only supports DirectX 9. I have also seen that some graphics cards require power slots? I am completely new to this and I would like to have support from users.
Oh and by the way, the minimum I can spend is 250$
    any suggestions?
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Salko, to play the games that you mention, you will need a good mid-level video card.  I like XFX, BFG, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY in that order.  The main thing to check is the length of the card.  The newer cards that are 10" or longer may not fit in the space provided.  With a PSU that is at least 500W, you have allot of choices.
The Antec PSU should be fine.  However, I like OCZ and Corsair PSU's for superior clean, stable power.  They are both enthusiast/gamer PSU manufacturers.  Check Newegg for a PSU that has allot of reviews (read them) and is rated at least 4 eggs.  This is a good indicator of the quality of the product from those who are using it.

  • Graphics Card Replacement Help

Greetings - A trip to the Genius Bar has confirmed that I have a bad graphics card (ATI Radeon 9600) in my PowerPC G5. It's working again for the time being, but needs to be replaced. The Apple Genius I worked with assured me that I could purchase and replace the card on my own (yikes but I'm willing to give it a go), but that particular card does not seem to be available and I want to be sure to use a suitable replacement. I've read through quite a few of the posts related to this topic, but as I am totally new to all of this, much of the discussion is beyond me.
I'm wondering about the "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Mac 256MB G5 AGP video card VGA+DVI" recommended by Makman8688 in the recent "Graphics Card Update" post. I do a lot of Photoshop work and hope to move into video at some point. Would this card be a suitable replacement?
    Many thanks for any guidance.

    Hi-
As explained there are 2x, 4x and 8x AGP cards. This is the bus speed multiplier.
The G5 uses the fastest AGP bus, that of the 8x AGP bus.
You mention DVI ports. If you have a requirement for two DVI ports, your card choices then become limited to cards with two DVI ports, or to OEM cards with ADC and DVI ports.
ADC ports can use a simple adapter to make them DVI compatible.
For video work, any card faster than a Radeon 9800 Pro should be considered.
A relatively common, and very nice graphics card is the Geforce 6800 Ultra. This card has 2 DVI ports and the power to run HD resolutions.
    It does, however, cost $200-$280.
If you don't need two DVI ports, then the Geforce 6200 card is an option, but not necessarily a power house type of card.
It is a bit better than the 9600, however, with a used 9650 being an option as well.
A Radeon 9800 Pro or XT will be quite a bit faster than the 9600, but are both limited to 1 DVI port.
These cards are better for video than the 6200 or the 9600.
The Pro sells for from around $95 up to $185, with the XT selling for $120-$190.

Not sure what else you would need to know.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
You will need a graphics card in the range of this NVIDIA GTX 660.  Additionally you need to replace the 300 watt power supply with a 500+ watt power supply such as this Corsair CX600 which is on sale for $45 after rebate.

  • MSI P7N SLI - PC Wont Boot - Video error code but changing graphics card no help

((Apologies, I think this should be in the forum for Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad boards))
Hi. Brief description of the issue.
Last Saturday there was fan noise. I ignored that, left the machine on, went out. By Sunday morning the machine had turned itself off. I opened it up, identified the problem as the graphics card fan, failed to fix but put the PC back on figuring I'd have to see about a new card soonish.
Later on it had turned itself off again. Got to bios with a system32 config error. I figured that was why it'd been shutting off and went through the long process of manual recovery from that. Turned the computer on, all good, played games.
Until I thought to check the GFX temp... 133 degrees Celcius. Turned it off right away, ordered replacement card - which has now arrived.
But the machine won't boot at all. I get one long tone then two short. This is the same with both the old and the new cards. Blue light comes on, all the fans come on, then the beeps.
But the 'long' isn't long like if it was a RAM issue. I'm googling AMI bios post codes and seeing 1 long + 2 short is a video error, but also that '3 beeps' is a memory problem.
I've swapped my RAM sticks around and tried each stick individually and get the same beep code.
I've reset the CMOS by holding in the button on the back for 5 seconds, with the power cable unplugged and after discharging the capacitors.
The only other suggestions I've found is that it could be a failure of the PSU to power the card. But it should be giving ample power.
Now I am stuck for ideas.

    Windows XP

With a 94000GT (no power connector from PSU) the machine is now running.
But there's still a problem somewhere (and that's a pretty poor graphics card I don't want to be stuck with) so I'm still keen to find out what to do, or what's wrong.
My 650W Antec with 2 12 volt rails should have no issues powering the other cards.

  • New graphics card installation help!!

So today I decided to finally put in my GeForce GTX 750Ti card into my computer. I'm upgrading it from a GeForce GT 545. I was pretty scared and shaky putting it in, as I'm not good with computers (the inner workings, anyway). I managed to slot it into the graphics card slot, and it felt tight and secure, yet when I plugged it in and everything, I get to the basic HP startup screen "Welcome press esc for startup menu", and then it just sits there, and after a few seconds a beep occurs.
I'm pretty sure the card works with my computer. Specs are here: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay?javax.portlet.begCach...
So I just took it out and put in my old graphics card and it booted fine. So did I put the card in wrong or something? I read something about the BIOS, but I really don't want to mess around with the BIOS and screw up or alter my computer in any way. Maybe I didn't seat the card properly? I'm just too nervous to retry putting it back in.

    Hi,
Most on the NVIDIA GTX 750 graphics cards expect at higher level PC BIOS as compared to that which is implemented in your PC.  Try one of the below graphics cards that have a switch to allow the card to function in legacy and UEFI mode.  Your PC needs a graphcis card to support legacy mode.
MSI NVIDIA GTX N750 TI and the MSI GTX N750 TF
If the above graphics cards fail to work the try a NVIDIA GTX 660 or any of the other graphics cards that are listed on the PC's specifications page.
