Monitor Monthly Bandwidth Usage

I feel like I am trying to find a needle in a haystack.
My broadband internet provider has recently announced strict bandwidth caps on all of their accounts whereas it was pretty lax up until now, and since I know that more and more ISP's in North America are going with this model I was wondering what everyone is using to keep track of their usage?
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a utility that maybe sits in the menubar or whatever that can monitor inbound and outbound traffic over wired or wireless connections that can differentiate between local network traffic and the cable modem traffic..?
Any options are welcomed.

I have the same need which I assume is growing for many and thus done some research in this area. Apparently, applications such as NetUse and iNet Network have been able to measure total internet usage on the Airport Extreme, until recently.
Unfortunately, 6.x Airport firmware updates have eliminated something called SNMP Monitoring which has undermined the ability for these apps to measure the traffic. Very frustrating!
To my knowledge, SurplusMeter only tracks internet usage on one computer which is of limited use in a multi-device environment.

  • Limit monthly bandwidth usage

    Hi,
We have a customer with a Cisco CISCO1941/K9. The router has 2 WAN connection. 1 connection has a monthly bandwith limit of 20GB/month and is an high speed connection. The second connection is unlimited and used as a fallback connection in case the primary line is unreachable.
We need to prevent the primary connection to use more as 20GB/monthly and in case it uses 20GB make the router switch to the second connection till the new billing period starts.
Is there any way to do this on a Cisco CISCO1941/K9 without Cisco Prime / extra hardware/software costs?
Thanks in advance for any reply.

There is one line that needs to be removed when using an interface that is not cellular which is "regsub -all {r} $interface "r " interface"   This changed the "Cellular0" to "Cellular 0"   I commented it out in the attached file and it is working as expected.

  • Determining my monthly DSL bandwidth usage

I have been using Verizon DSL for several years now. I would like to know how I may check on my monthly bandwidth usage. I look at my on line bill and my account and find nothing. I installed the Verizon help software but find nothing.
I did find a bandwidth calculator which will give an estimate
    http://www.broadband.org/usage_calculator.html
But I should be able to find out the exact usage fromj Verizon.
    Thanks!

  • Adobe CC - Bandwidth usage

I live in the sticks, unfortunately my only option for internet is satellite which has limited monthly bandwidth usage. My question is, Abobe CC constantly send and receive data, which would use my bandwidth usage?

    Hi Fabian,
Thanks for your interest in Typekit!  The font licensing through Typekit does not include the option to embed the fonts in a native app. In order to use a font in an app, you will need to purchase a separate license from the foundry.
For more details, please refer to the "Typekit Font Licensing" help page.
We hope to be able to support embedded fonts in the future, but it isn't available at this time. Sorry I couldn't be of more help; please let me know if you have any other questions.

  • AEBS Monthly Bandwidth Monitoring

Ok, I'm sure everyone has heard about Comcast putting a 250GB per month cap on bandwidth Oct. 1st. Well I as a Comcast user I am concerned about how much bandwidth I use. I would like to find a program that can run on one of my Macs that will talk with the AEBS through SNMP and log a recurring monthly tally. I have found two programs that come close, but just don't fit what I need.
    AirportTraffic
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/airporttraffic.html
    SurplusMeter
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20884
AirportTraffic is darn close. It speaks directly with my AEBS to find my bandwidth usage. But it does not log it into monthly intervals. Also, it only runs in Leopard and my "House Computer" is an older G4 that can run Tiger at its best. (And AirportTraffic may have a bit of a stability issue. I had it running overnight on my MBP and sometime during the night it decided to quit. Can't monitor bandwidth if the monitor won't stay open now can I?)
Surplus Meter seems to be a very nice program, doing almost everything I want it to do. But one catch, it only monitors bandwidth on the computer it's running on, not the whole network.
So you can see my frustration. So many programs are so close, yet just not there. I know alot of people are concerned about Comcasts bandwidth cap. Mainly because 1) They don't give you a way to monitor it and 2) The penalty for going over more than once is too severe (Your banned for a year from Comcast). These are the reasons why some of us are a little nervous.
So please, help me find a solution. There has got to be a better way to do this.
Oh, as for anyone thinking about posting something completely useless like, "250GB a month is a lot, you'll never need that much bandwidth.......blah blah", save your keystrokes. Every forum I have searched for the answer has ended with comments like that. And the question asked never gets a solution.
I am a heavy bandwidth user. Computers are my life. So between iTunes, Netflix Instant Queue, Hulu.com, PS3, Xbox360, Nintendo Wii, Pandora Radio, Apple Sync Services, online backups, 3 Macs, 2 iPhones, etc.... I have completely legal reasons for wanting to know how much bandwidth I use.
    Thank You for your time,
    Richard

    hey everyone...
I wrote AirportTraffic a while back...mainly to teach myself Cocoa programming. I also use Comcast, so I am concerned about the upcoming bandwidth caps. I am starting to add more features to AirportTraffic to closely match what we all really need. Please don't hesitate to suggest ideas. For now I am focusing on:
    * Status menu based UI (making pretty with graphics)
    * reset on monthly basis (or other time period)
    * fixing bugs
    * user defined limit (default to 250gb)
I finished making a new alpha version that implements the UI in the status area. It isn't complete, but just shows a bit of progress (one nights work).
Also, I added 'donate' buttons to the google code page and to my home page. Please donate if you would like to see work on this continue. I never want to charge for this, I prefer open source, but a few donations make it easier to spend my evenings writing code!

  • What is the actual bandwidth usage?

When I use Adobe Connect I am online and broadcasting for about 4 hours a day, for 10 days at a time. I only do screen sharing and voice -- no video.
I have DSL Internet. The DSL upload speeds are very poor (under 1Mb). To speed things up, I thought I'd look into getting a 4G hotspot, but I'm worried about actual bandwidth usage, since such plans have a practical limit of 5 or 10Gb per month.
My off-hand guess is that If I were to watch a video of myself, I guess it would be a couple of gigs for a four hour, non-HD video. So by that very rough guestimate, I'd hit 20Gb pretty easily over the 40 hours of my meeting. Is that right the way to think about it?
Has anyone monitored actual consumed bandwidth for a simple meeting of one person talking and sharing his screen? I'm not looking for definitive answers -- just some ballpark estimate of what such a meeting consumes each hour...
    Thanks! :-)

Page 22 of this document will give you some numbers that will allow you to estimate the total data used for a meeting. Keep in mind these numbers are what Adobe saw as average consumption, yours may be higher or lower.

  • Excessive bandwidth usage

My wife's school has been using SGD for for a couple of years to allow her to remote desktop to her school PC from our home one - using just Word and Excel. In the last couple of months SGD has gone from using a few hundred MB per day to ~5-8GB per day - that is more than we used to use in a month! Does anyone know why this may have occurred?
Is there anything that can be done to reduce it?
Needless to say our ISP is very happy to charge us extra for all the extra bandwidth we now need. Nothing has changed at our end.

    Hi.
Do you know which SSGD release has been installed on the server (at school I mean)?
You could simply ask an SSGD administrator to type "/opt/tarantella/bin/tarantella version" to find it out.
That's rather strange since SSGD is highly optimized as to reduce the network traffic.
Are you sure it's SSGD which is causing that huge bandwidth usage?
Give a network monitor/sniffer (eg, http://netlimiter.com/download.php) a try so see if there's something else which is hogging your bandwidth.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • WRT160N Bandwidth usage

Does this router monitor or meter bandwidth usage? Using Vista Home Premium OS, two other computers with WMP54GS and WMP54G PCI adapters and a PSP.
Can it be configured to monitor or meter usage? Can I see the actual usage in real time?
Question 2: (I can ask this elsewhere if you want) Is there a way to extend the antenna on WRT54G & S adapters since they tend to become shielded by the computer case itself?
    Thanks

No Linksys router do not monitor band width.nor they can be coinfigured to do so. You can use high gain antennas for the adapters.

  • High bandwidth usage while inactive

Twice today I've glanced at Activity Monitor's Dock icon, which I have set to view Network Usage, and saw a large amount of data streaming continuously through my internet connection.
This morning when I noticed it for the first time, I poked around my system, and after not seeing any other programs (Safari, Software Update, etc.) being active, I tried quitting Messages Beta - and the bandwidth instantly dropped down to nothing. At that time, it was moving around 60KB/sec upstream, and probably around half that downstream according to Activity Monitor.
A few minutes ago this evening, I saw it happen again - my Activity Monitor was showing heavy continuous bandwidth usage. This time I simply set my status to 'Offline' in Messages Beta and once again it instantly dropped down to nothing. This time the bandwidth was closer to 160kb/sec upstream, and half that downstream! When I changed my status back to 'Available' a few seconds later, everything continued on normally, with almost no data usage.
I had no active chats going, never used video, screen or file sharing - so what in the world is Messages Beta doing with so much data streaming? I'm quite mystified, and wondering if anybody else has seen this happen....

The issue seemed to be local network traffic.

  • FF resolution settings to lower bandwidth usage

Which versions of FF will do this and what specific settings are there to lower bandwidth usage?
Also, will the FF settings override settings on websites such as youtube? For example, if my kids were to click on higher resolution or HD video settings for their youtube videos, what would happen?

Changing the resolution doesn't have any effect on the Firefox performance and may even look worse if you operate an LDC monitor not in its native resolution.
You can block content if you ant to improve performance on a low bandwidth connection.
You can look at Adblock Plus.

There is no Apple approved software, but that does not mean Apple do not have anything against doing this either. I have found two easy-to-use applications to do this but both require that you have a broadband router that supports SNMP. Unfortunately many IPS' provide routers with this feature disabled.
    See https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/netuse-traffic-monitor/id440301281?mt=12
    and http://peakhourapp.com
Both will not only monitor real time usage, but both can also measure usage against monthly data allowances.

  • Determining actual DSL bandwidth usage

    Hello All,
I am seriously considering going to truly wireless (MiFi) internet after years of using DSL service.  However, there's one thing I have no data on:  my actual bandwidth usage month by month.
Obviously I know I can't go back to day one and get this data, but I find it impossible to believe that it cannot be obtained relatively easily.  There is an old thread from 2010 where someone implied that one could query the DSL modem or modem/router could be queried to get this data.  I was not able to post a reply on that thread, and I presume that's because it's closed to new messages.
Right now I have the latest D-Link router from Verizon and am able to log in to it without problems.  But this particular router has more possible options on more web pages (or their equivalent) than I've ever seen before.  Although I am a "tech geek" I have no idea where to look among the myriad options to seek out this data.
If anyone has an answer as to how to query this router, or knows of a web resource that tells you how to do this "generically," I'm sure I can do so after a little noodling around.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    Brian

I'm not the most familiar with the D-Link routers Verizon hands out, but what you're looking to find is some information on the WAN or "Internet" end of the modem for how many bytes of traffic you have sent and received. This information may be for when the router was last rebooted or it may be from the last time your connection re-connedcted if it has dropped, so it isn't really accurate when it comes down to a breakdown of things. If you can get a byte count, it is easy to convert to Megabytes or Gigabytes from that point (Factorsof 10 in a general sense). By definition a Kilobyte is 1024 Bytes, but in some cases a factor of 10 is applied so a Kilobyte is 1000 Bytes. A Gigabyte can be 1024 or 1000 Kilobytes depending on how the data is being measured like previously mentioned.
    So, 40,960 Bytes / 1024 = 40 Kilobytes / 1024 = 0.039 Gigabytes.
Considering how large (or small) the data plans tend to be on a Mi-Fi device, consider the type of network traffic you currently have and gauge it against future use. If you currently have gamers in the house, a Mi-Fi should already be off the table as a full blown replacement as cellular connections are poor quality connections for playing video games on. Not to mention, games and patches can consume the cap quickly if the gamer has a lot of games that they play. Also, if your home is Netflix or YouTube heavy, without turning down the video quality you'll find it's quite easy to run over a cap. On a Mi-Fi myself, I have to restrict my YouTube access since I am picky about low quality video, and force everything to HD. I can slip in a few videos on a Grandfathered 3GB plan with Verizon but if I watch some of the common, 20 minute videos I watch, that's a Gigabyte per video on average. My normal net usage would burn me through the cap in less than an hour.
Just some food for thought, but keep in mind Verizon will most likely be unable to provide any sort of data usage counter. You may need to use third party routers or software in order to determine your usage per month.

  • Monitor .mac bandwidth?

I'm using .mac (regular 1Gb account/10 Gb transfer) to host my podcast, and after hearing about one guy with another host who got hit with $15,000 in bandwidth overage charges in one month, I'm wondering if there's any way to keep an eye on my .mac bandwidth usage. I can't find anything in the .mac docs, other than they will suddenly shut you down as soon as you go over....
    G4 mirror door   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

they will suddenly shut you down as
    soon as you go over
Not exactly. You will receive an email when you have served 75% of your bimonthly amount. That is, they split your 10GB bandwidth into 5GB for the first 2 weeks, and 5GB for the last 2 weeks. If you get to 3.75GB before the 2 weeks expires, you get a message. .Mac also sends a message when you have reached 90%.
You can see how much bandwidth you've used by going to your account page, and click on the "details" link next to the bandwidth.

  • Thunderbolt bandwidth usage App?

HI there - can anyone point me to an application that allows me to monitor the realtime bandwidth usage of each of the thunderbolt buses on the nMP. There are regular times during my work where I need to know if I'm maxing out a particular bus, or whether I could be loading it up more by taking a device off another bus. So if anyone knows of an app that allows me to quickly see how each bus is being utilised that would be awesome. Cheers.
