Monitor on PC network?

Hello
Is this possible but I would like to know how or if there is software that allows a monitor on a Windows PC on the network to become the monitor for the Mac mini?
Cheers

There is a category of programs (many free) called VNC (Virtual Network Computing). You can get a free VNC client for your PC and use the built-in VNC in Leopard (called Screen-Sharing) to remote control the Mini through the ethernet.
You'd need a real monitor and keyboard to initially configure the Mini and enable Screen-Sharing.
Alternatively, if the PC and Mini are sitting next to each other, you could use a KVM switch (keyboard, video, mouse) to share a monitor and keyboard and mouse between the two computers.

    Hello all,
Is there any Java API to use for monitoring computers in network? to remote lock/unlock screen of any PC in network?
It would be great if you could post a sample here. or just give some ideas.
    Thank you so much.

Is there any Java API to use for monitoring computers in network? No. There isn't even a Java API to resolve the undefined concept 'in network'.

Looking for a user-friendly, dummy-proof article on creating a small office network from a total of four Mac's (3 iMacs, one Air), allowing the administrator to randomly monitor without detection the real-time activities taking place on the other two machines. Hello, rjbm_exact.
You definitely need a managed switch and a Cisco Small Business (200 or 300 series) can meet your requirements. You can setup separate VLAN to segregate user access level. Are you also looking at expanding your wireless (guest access)?
Let me know if you need more assistance or e-mail ([email protected]) me directly. Kind regards.

  • Dual Monitor Setup/Home Network/Sync--11" MBA & 21.5" iMac via Thuderbolt cable?

11" MBA & 21.5" iMac both purchased in August 2011 running Lion
Is it possible to setup my MBA & iMac where they will sync?  I have them connected via thinderbolt and want to be able to connect when I get home and sync all my folders [notes, cases, papers, etc...]?
If this is not possible is there a way to transfer files between my two machines using the Thunderbolt cable?  I ask because even though my MBA has a Thunderbolt port, there is not "Fire Wire" option under "System Preferences →Network" like there is on my iMac?
In a perfect world I want to be able to hook up my MBA & iMac via Thunderbolt cable, have them both controlled by my Magic Mouse & Keyboard I use with my iMac as dual monitors and be able to transfer files back and forth freely.  I understand this may be a lot to ask but thought I should throw it out there just in case there was a way and I was not doing something right.
I appreciate all the help by everyone in the Apple Commun ity

    OK great info!
I found 2 possible ethernet to USB adapters:
By "Plugable":  USB 2.0 to ethernet LAN wired network adapter - seems this will work, but I'll contact Plugable.
    2. Apple USB Ethernet Adapter
Easily connect your MacBook Air computer to an Ethernet network with the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Small and light, it connects to the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air and provides an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100BASE-T performance.  BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK ON ANYTHING BUT a MacBook Air…
    One person commented:
This little gem used to be the device of choice for adding a second Ethernet interface to a Mac Mini Server and I'd been using one that way for about a year. After doing a software update to 10.6.6 it stopped working. Forewarned is forearmed – it appears that Apple is finally enforcing the MacBook Air system requirement.
    Thanks for any additional comments.

  • How to monitor my shared network connection

    Hi,
I have a mac mini server which I'm using (among other things) to share my internet network connection (from the ethernet adapter) with other wireless clients through the wireless adapter. This works fine.
My question is: how do I monitor how many clients are attached to the wireless network?
    Thanks!

The answer to your question also depends on whether you want to monitor which of your friends etc. is online, or whether you want to monitor for malicious users/attackers.
In the first case the DHCP client list ist quite ok, in the second case it wouldn't help you: An attacker would probably not query your DHCP server, he would just listen to some traffic and could then (a) choose a seemingly free IP from the network, (b) hijack an existing IP and MAC address (or of course (c) decide to use the DHCP server after all).
You can use tools like TCPDUMP, ETHEREAL or KISMAC to scan the traffic on your WLAN, but since an attacker that has cracked the WEP key could change his MAC address to that of one of the other computers, intrusion detection is difficult. With respect to protection the best advice probably is the one about using more secure methods than WEP...

  • External video monitor kills wifi network link under Windows 7

I have a 2010 15 inch Macbook Pro; when I plug in the external monitor with the display port under Mac OS Lion, I have no problem getting access to my wireless local network or any network.  When I switch to Windows 7 thorugh bootcamp, I can get access without plugging in the external video cable.  I plug the external monitor, it kills my airport card and no access to the wifi.  I have remove the external monitor to gain access to the wireless network.  Windows 7 is up-to-date and the same thing for bootcamp.  Also I have a Star-tech dvi usb switch.
So what gives?  Star-tech dvi switich or it a Microsoft Windows 7 issue

Maybe this will help. Notice the bullet addressing external monitors. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1365

  • Looking to monitor kids via network

Does anyone know of any available software, similar to SpectorSoft, that would allow me to monitor activity without installing software on each device?  I would have thought that there would be network monitoring software that would do this, but I am struggling to find any.  I have a home network with an airport extreme and two extenders (one express, and one extreme).   The kids use every device conceivable, including PCs, Mac, iPad, iTouch, iPhone, not to mention xBox and Wii.
Maybe I am searching for the wrong kinds of products, but I keep coming to a dead-end.  Either the software will only work on PCs or only on Macs, or it requires installation on each device which is impractical in my situation.
    I will appreciate any suggestion.
    Thanks

As you have already surmised, most consumer-grade monitoring products are somewhat limited to operate on a client basis where you would have to run it from each network client that you are interested in monitoring.
Most business-grade monitoring is typically done with a network appliance that sits between the Internet connection and the router ... and, as you can imagine, these can get quite pricey.
If you are mainly interested on which domains are being accessed, one free option would be to use a DNS service, like OpenDNS instead of your ISP's DNS servers. OpenDNS also provides you with the ability to establish web content filtering and means to block individual domains.

  • Need to monitor Mac on Network and Capture by video

    Hi,
I looking for a software program that will allow me to monitor another Mac on my network without being known that I am monitoring and have the ability on my end to capture their activity by way of video. I am also unsure if I may need to different software programs to achieve this. Can anyone suggest anything?
    Thanks for your help.

Perhaps something like eWatch would work for you. Leopard will also offer some tracking and monitoring abilities as part of the upgraded Parental Controls.

  • Web Url Monitoring internal/external network

We know that SCOM 2007 R2 can monitor the web url's.  Does it monitor the weburl with in the internal network and also from external network.  is it possible to monitor the same internal website which is confiured to use out side the network(external)
from scom 2007 R2.  how to find which url is internal and which is external.

Please confirm that SCOM 2007 R2 having the capability to monitor a weburl from internal network and also from external network(internet).
I have configured the web url monitoring using the web application template…which I am sure that is monitoring the weburl internally(with in the network).
For the same weburl is configured to  access from external network (internet). I need to monitor the same url
which is accessing from internet.  If internet users are not able to access the weburl we need an alert from scom 2007 R2.
i googled for this answer and no luck.
Is there any different monitors available with scom to monitor weburl for both internal and external network

  • Reasonably priced endpoint bandwidth monitoring in BYOD network?

Please save me from this Cisco nightmare!
I manage a BYOD network in a shared office complex. It is connected to 75mbps FCCT broadband via a Cisco 1921. I bought the 1921 because the old Draytek wasn't stable enough.
Obviously I need to monitor the upload / download consumed by the users. To my total supprise, I've wasted days trying to find a solution that will actually work with Cisco. I've tried (with the help of their tech support) PRTG only to find that is won't work unless all the endpoints are static IPs. Obviously this is not really feasable.
I've had a look at ntopng, but I really don't want to be unsupported. All the others I've found cost £1000s and I have little faith that they'll work any better than PRTG.
I've gotta be missing something obvious??
    TIA

Currently we have both wired and wireless, however I'm thinking of putting the wireless network behind a hotspot controller.
In terms of identification the ideal solution would allow me to label the MAC addresses of regular users and generate a monthly report.
All I need to be able to do is spot when a user is getting a bit greedy, I'm open to suggestions?

  • MacBook Air with external monitor and wired network

    Hello,
I'm investigating the possibility to buy a MacBook Air 13", but I have a big doubt: most of the time I work in office, with wired LAN and an external DVI monitor.
I've seen that I can buy an USB to LAN adapter and a DisplayPort to DVI to connect to the Thunderbolt port, but in this case I will have only one USB port free a no other Thunderbolt.
Is anybody advising a different set of periferals to deal with this environment?
I haven't found any Thunderbolt "HUB" around, does this exist, to multiply the Thunderbolt port?
Thank in advance for any advice
      Massimiliano

Naturally yes .. The problem is not the USB itsself, but the fact that original adapters from Apple (LAN and DVI) are made from a Thunderbolt connector, and they do not replicate the port where they are connected to.
Others party LAN adapters that comes on USB port are only 10/100 Mbs, whilst the Apple's one is a Gigabit. This is why I asked for some sort of Thnderbolt hub, or any other experinced advice..
I know that the MacBookAir comes with a good 802.11n integrated wireless, but as you know (or can imagine), when you are in the office a Gigabit connection is another movie, especially if you are tranferring large amount of data or are connected to huge centralized databases.
I was preferring a MacBook Air to the pro for it's monitor: for me a 1440x900 is much more better than a 1280x800 when I'm out of office. On the other hand, the version with the retina display is at the moment too expensive for my budget.
The final solution could be a MacBook pro 15", but I was preferring the 13" when in mobility, for its form-factor.

  • Port Monitoring for AirPort Network

I recently did a port scan of my AirPort Extreme network and there are more ports active on my network than Im comfortable with. I searched each port and got 'kind of' useful information ... enough where I know people aren't hacking the bajesus out of my network. I would like to know if there is a utility somewhere that logs this kind of thing? It would be useful to know who's trying to get in (or out).
    Thanks

    FunkeyJunc wrote:
Actually, no ... they were the extreme's ports. Indicative of something listening on that port (which is why I can see it when doing a scan). For the really detail thirsty ... I did a port scan in NetWork utility of my Public IP address. I was hoping to identify which programs are listening on which ports through the base station. A log would be helpful.
I guess it would make sense that an AirPort unit would be listening to ports so as to be able to support port forwarding. That doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything paying attention to those ports on a Mac on your LAN.
If you search for "firewall" on VersionTracker (http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx) you'll see several products, some offering logging.
The Mac OS X firewall capability is based on the software "ipfw". You can learn more about it here:

  • I need free network analyzer software for my mac. we are trying to monitor what software may be running which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem.what is recommended?

My internet keeps 'tripping' at or around the same period time each day.  We have already replaced our modem from our internet provider and we bought a new airport extreme router. We do not believe these were the cause, although we have now ruled them out as a cause.  Everytime the internet fails, our internet provider company tells us that there is still plenty of signal coming into our house. There is something going on inside we believe, and a technician set up our Network Utility to run a continuous ping test to capture information about when it 'trips' againn.  Yesterday, it happened again, and when he checked the data out, he said he is sure there is something 'running in the background' on my IMac.  He advised me to download a free Network Analyzer so he could further investigate what is was that was causing the problem, so I need a free network analyzer software for my Mac. The issue has been going on for a long time, so it is not the new operating system, Lion. This morning, we changed the radio channel from 'auto' to 'manual' and set a new channel, hoping that might help. We are trying to find out what program may be running (even a tiny one in the background) which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem. What is free downloadable product is recommended?

Will Activity Monitor and/or Network Utility, both already in the Utilities folder on your Mac, help in trying to diagnose the problem.
If you are connecting via wifi what encryption are you using? If you're using the Exteme I doubt that you are using WEP, but worth checking as it seems Macs don't like it and work better using WPA.

  • Naming Networks in EEM route table monitor

I have the following EEM applet running on one of my core devices to monitor any changes in the routing table.
    event manager applet route-table-monitor
event routing network 0.0.0.0/0 ge 1
    action 0.5 set msg "Route changed: Type: $_routing_type, Network: $_routing_network, Mask/Prefix: $_routing_mask, Protocol: $_routing_protocol, GW: $_routing_lastgateway, Intf: $_routing_lastinterface"

action 8.0 set msg "Route changed: Type: "

The script is running on a 3750
I tried putting ip host info on the switch but that did not work.
I am not sure if there is an extra line I can add to the script or if anyone else has done this?

I don't understand the request.  Where would the network "name" come from?  Networks are unnamed on IOS.
