Monitor on top?

A friend of mine with limited desk space just bought a mini. We are wondering if it's okay to put the monitor (22" LCD) on top of the computer. The aluminum frame certainly seems strong enough and the DSL modem is close by (I've heard of some concerns that placing a monitor on the mini may disrupt Wi-Fi reception.)

I was actually wondering this as well. Why isn't their a posted specification on maximum weight the new macmini's can bear. It seems given all the operating spec's this needs to be included. The alternatives are fine, but I work at a University and we do routine setups of workstations. This information would be handy to KNOW what we can and cannot do when it comes to setting up the footprint of our stations. I called Apple and asked this very question and I got some non-technical hear-say type answer. The individual stated, "Well I used a 19" monitor (not an apple monitor) for 2 years and I've never had a problem. You would probably be ok, but if you have any concerns about it, if it were me I wouldn't do it." I pressed him more and said, "So, you're saying its ok?" Then he said, "Well the only thing I can think about is the optical drive possibly being damaged and maybe heat dissipation being a factor." This is dumbing UP what he said. So he continued to vacillate back and forth so much so as to destroy the confidence of getting any conclusive answer. I tried to get to someone more suited to the question, but he lacked the imagination to understand the relevance of my concern, and marginalized its importance. So I would like to have ideas as to who I could contact short of manually performing experiments on cases to establish experimentally what the weight tolerances are of the new macmini's. Isn't that Apple's job?

• How to add Activity Monitor to top Toolbar

The last step of most workflows is to Export. By that time, I grow a little tired and impatient. It takes time if you are exporting dozens of versions.
How can I configure Aperture with the a button for Activity Monitor at the top?

O.k., go to the "View" menu and use the command "Customize Toolbar".
Drag an "Activity" icon to the Toolbar. Sorry, I missed it the first time I searched the "Customize Toolbar" menu.

• Using cinema monitor with top closed

A MBP C2D is driving a 30 inch Apple HD cinema monitor with the top closed.
USB KB and mouse connected to the MBP. OS 10.4.9.
Can use the power button on the display to switch from sleep (MBP sleep light pulses) to normal operation (sleep light steady on at medium). Sleep light behavior is not discussed in the MBP User Guide when using these conditions.
Can see no indication the MBP display is on.
So is this all normal behavior? And the best way to undertake daily operation when want only the 30 inch monitor as my display.
?

Personally, I would leave the screen lid cracked open a bit for cooling purposes. Air is drawn in through the keyboard to aid in cooling.

• External monitor with top closed ?

Is it possible and how ? I can see extended desktop and mirroring , but how does one use "just" the external monitor? thanks

Click here and follow the instructions.

• Display mirroring doesn't fit on external monitor

I have a Philips FlatTV that is 1280x720 and a new MacBook that is 1280x800.
When I connect the external monitor, the top, bottom and left side of the screen are truncated. The right side is aligned to the edge. I lose about 1" of the display image on the left side, the Menu bar on the top and the little lights under programs in the dock.
Are there any adjustments to be made to get the full MacBook image on the external monitor? Can't find and TV adjustments that would address this.

Finally stumbled on the solution.
There is an option in Display Preferences, Options tab. It is the Overscan checkbox (default checked). Just uncheck it and the screen will not be cut off.

• Using an old Mac monitor

I'd like to set up a Mac mini that I'm not otherwise using for kids games and some surfing. The only spare monitor I have left is an old 15 inch Multiple Scan display.
It needs to be connected via the dvi-vga adapter and then a vga-Mac monitor adapter. The start up splash screen comes up but then when the desktop comes up it is grey, no matter what I set the resolution (via system preferences) using another monitor. the top resolution for this monitor was 1024 by 768.

Not sure if I recall the definitive answer, but you would probably be better off finding a VGA monitor used.

• Moving application windows between two monitors in Mountain Lion

I have a Macbook Pro that sits on my desk below an external monitor that is hooked into the laptop. I use the Displays setting to arrange my external monitor on top of my laptop monitor. Unitl I install Mountain Lion, I used to be able to move windows between the two screens. Now, all application windows get stuck at the menu bar. This is not a problem if the external monitor is placed to the right, left, or the bottom of my Macbook Pro screen in the Display setting. The problem occurs only when it located above the laptop monitor. Has anyone else experience this and is there a quick fix?

Hi Jerry,
The arrangement in the displays setting does show correctly.
If I restart the laptop, it will let me move applications between the two displays but as soon as it wakes up from sleep, I can no longer move applications to the external display if it is positioned on top (it will work if it is postioned on either sides or bottom).
I did a fresh reinstall of the Mountain Lion operating system (reformatted the hard drive) but this did not fix it.

• Xorg - help with rotation on dual monitor setup

i have two monitors that im trying to get rotated properly but im having some trouble. i think its easiest to list out what i have going on here...
1. im using a BFG nvidia geforce 7600 with the nvidia driver, and everything on the system is up to date
2. everything works fine when i just put the monitors in their normal 1280x1024 side by side
3. when i put Option "Rotate" "CCW" in the device section (as seen in the config below), i get my left monitor rotated nicely and my right monitor is rotated as well but it is setup as if it is below my left monitor.
4. when i take out the setting from #3 and use Option "RandRRotation" "true" im started into normal side-by-side like in #2, then using xrandr -o left will get me the same result as #3 with right monitor below left.
5. here is my Xorg.0.log and here is my xorg.conf.
ideally i'd like to use the setup in #3 but have the monitors be side-by-side in orientation, so that i can move the mouse off of the right edge of left monitor into the right monitor, rather than having to go to the bottom edge and having it magically appear on the right monitor. if thats confusing i can draw it up.
is this possible? any help would be greatly appreciated

im kind of thinking now that i cant do this
the desktop is seen as just one big desktop stretched across two monitors...so when you rotate/xrandr it, its going to do the same and assume you stack your two monitors on top of each other.
i think im right, but can anyone confirm that?

• Viewer on 2nd Monitor Problem

I just upgraded FCPX to 10.06 and when I show "viewer on 2nd monitor" the image is all screwed up and distorted, almost like it lost sync. This has never happened before. Has anyone had this happen after upgrading FCPx??

I checked the connections. If I output the event viewer to the second monitor then its all correct. I've found a work around but it's very strange. I had the second monitor on top of the main monitor in the display preferences for monitor arrangement. When I move the 2nd monitor to the right of the main monitor in the preferences and quit FCPX and re-open FCPX, it then works fine. I never had this issue before I upgraded to the next version 10.06. Try putting your 2nd monitor on top of the main monitor (in the display preferences) and then output the Viewer to the 2nd monitor. Curious if you get the same problem.

• Workspace changing with 2 monitors

I was using Premiere 2.0 in a computer with two CRT Samsung 17" monitors, and now I'm using Premiere Pro CS3 in a new computer with two monitors: a Sony LCD 17" (4:3) and a Samsung LCD 19" wide (16:9).
I have arranged all my windows in the two monitors and saved the new workspace. But almost of the times I open a project, the windows that were arranged in my main monitor (monitor 1 - the Sony 4:3) appears in the second monitor on top of the windows in that monitor.
Is there any way to fix this?

When you reopen the project, check to see what workspace it says you are in. is it correct? If you are in the correct workspace, click "reset workspace." Does that change anything?
I have no problem with what you are describing; a project reopens with its workspace active when last saved. Low end system (as in older) Nvidia MX440 in Dualview.

• How to graphically get top developers of my application

Hi guys,
I wish to create a dashboard in my application for ADMIN to view the top developers of our application. This is almost similar to "Monitor Activity -> Top Users" in Administration Tab of APEX 4.0.
I want to show the same data but on my page in custom application. Can anyone provide me the same query which APEX 4.0 developers used to show this data on ADMIN page???
Thanks in advance

Thanks christian,
I got this apex view, but i am unable to get any row from this view on apex.oracle.com.
It always hangs for few minutes and then says "Connection Timed Out" although in search filter i have just given 10 rows to get. Even i tried to give SELECT * FROM APEX_WORKSPACE_LOG_SUMMARY_USR where rownum < 10, but still the error says "Connection Timed Out"

• Mouse Scroll Wheel not working when iTunes is on secondary monitor

Hi,
This is a pretty convoluted problem, but I run two monitors (from the one RADEON videocard) and it seems that the iTunes7 window won't recognize input from my mouse's scroll wheel when the window is positioned on my "secondary" monitor.
I know, it's weird, but it's the case.
I guess this counts more as a bug report than anything else, but I'm hoping something can be done about this soon!
M

Good call. I can confirm that the scroll wheel works any time that your mouse is in a positive coordinate location, does not work in a negative coordinate location. It doesn't matter whether the window straddles the two monitors - only what the mouse coordinate is. This applies for left monitors and (not nearly as common) monitors on top.
This goes to show that it's generally a bad idea to rewrite your own scrolling windows - you're bound to introduce bugs for some combination of input/output devices.

• Mini-DVI to VGA adapter length

I'll be officially switching from microsoft to mac this month and i cant wait.
after much thought as to whether i should buy a MBP or a MB i decided to go MB
I plan to use my MB as a desktop while im in my dorm. I already have a 17 inch HP LCD monitor that works perfectly fine
I know that in order to hook the monitor and the MB up i need to get the mini-DVI to VGA adapter.
My question is, how long is the actual cable for the adapter? The picture on the website looks kinda short and I don't know whether or not the cable will reach from the back of the monitor to macbook. Will the cable be long enough so my macbook can rest freely on my desk, a few inches in front of my monitor, or am I going to have to put the monitor on top of/in front of my macbook.
Thanks!
~Dan

The cable on the adapter is only 2.5 inches long.
I wish that Apple would make a mini-DVI extension cable so I could get the big bulky adapter off of my desk.

• GW2012 PO problems after upgrade

Last weekend I finished off the upgrade of our Primary Domain and Post Offices to GW2012 (OES11) from GW8 (NW8). The MTA and 4 remote site post offices had been done prior and had mostly been working fine - segfault issue with one PO. The final 3 (and largest) post offices were done over the weekend. The MTA and these three post offices are clustered on VMWare 4.1. The remote sites are on physical servers. All are OES11 using NSS for the GroupWise volume.
Prior to the post offices being moved, the MTA had not skipped a beat and the two cluster servers behaved. Once the PO's were loaded there have constant lock ups/crashes and subsequent DB corruptions. This occurs after the POA's are loaded for the two largest PO's. Using TOP I noticed that the load average would creep up and up until the whole system had a heart attack.
I am only just learning to use Linux, so my investigation skills are fairly limited, though I was able to figure out it has something to do with the quickfinder indexing. Once I turned it off, the load average has stayed down and the post offices seem stable for the moment.
I was thinking of doing a top down rebuild and unless i'm given a very good reason why not too, i'm going to leave the quickfinder indexing off until the school holidays when I can investigate further.
I suppose what I'm asking is what more do you suggest I can do to stabilise the system? What should I do regarding the quickfinder indexing?
A few other issues we've noted that we hope someone might be able to shed some lights on
* Many staff members have been unable to access their mailbox as their password seems to have been deleted/reset.
* One post offices http monitor does not have many of the hyperlinks for settings? I.E: if I go to MTP Status, neither Send or Recieve can be clicked on to change the address
* Web Access (GW 8 Secondary domain) has started maxing out it's C/S settings and needs to be bounced. This has never been an issue until Tuesday (Monday was a public holiday - long live the Queen)
Thanks is advance for any help
Cheers

I'm not sure what you checked with the zlssiostatus, but *all* your
symptoms, from a to z sound *exactly* like how a severe I/O crippled GW
system behaves. E.G, this is exactly how a GW system "runs" (or better,
runs not), when the diks system is too slow for GW. It will slowly but
surely run into a deadlock situation that will couse precisely all your
symptoms (memory usage rises, coXX errors, inability to cleanly
dismount/deactivate pools or volumes, c/s threads maxing out, all these
sort of things.)
So, what *is* your storage behind all this?
