Monitor Playback

I have three monitors set up with my Premiere Pro editing system.  Two for editing dual screen and the third is an external monitor for client viewing.  I am using a NIVDIA graphics card.NIVDIA Quadro K4000.  I have the video sent to the external monitor but the playback is choppy and not smooth.  Any suggestions of settings to have a good playback for clients.  Thanks

Without knowing anything about your system hardware (aside from the K4000), footage being used, sequence settings, etc., there are many possible reasons for choppy playback. However, assuming everything is up to par to handle the playback, my experience when sending the Premiere preview directly to a "computer" display connected to the graphics card is that it usually looks "acceptable" but is not always perfect, especially with 1080i sources. Since computer display cards output Progressive and not Interlaced video, and the timing is also typically off (60Hz versus proper 59.94), that viewing method is less than ideal.
I've gotten nice results using third-party hardware for output such as Matrox MXO2 Mini or Black Magic Design Intensity Pro. These will send a proper "video" signal out with correct timing and Rec. 709 HD colorspace via HDMI to your HD monitor, rather than relying on the "graphics" card to approximate such things. The Matrox also offers calibration when using a compatible display, and the units mentioned also offer video capture in addition to output monitoring, plus some hardware conversions/scaling options.
Thanks

  • Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky after resintall of operating system and CS5

PROBLEM: Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky
This had NOT been an issue prior to reinstalling the operating system and all software.  I have read numerous articles on the forums and have tried everything I can find...with no results.
STEPS TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM:
I have scoured the articles here http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=choppy%20video&cat=support&pr oduct=premierepro and others at Cretive Cow
I have installed all updates for CS5 Master Collection, immediately following a fresh install of the operating system and SC5 Master Collection.
I have ensured that sequence settings match resolution and frame rates of footage - the problem persists.
I have tested by importing both standard def AVI files created from tape and high def SONY MP4 files - the problem persists.
I have ensured the latest Video drivers are installed (clean installation selected, so that the Windows default would be removed) - the problem persists.
I have tried the 3D settings in NVIDIA control panel | Program Settings tab... selected Adobe Premiere Pro from the drop down menu | and chaged 'Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration from the value of 'Multiple Display performance' to the value of 'single display performance'; although, I ran two monitors before using this latest NVIDIA video driver and I didn't experience this jerky footage issue - the problem persisted after affecting that change; so, I switched it back.
Since I have 96 GB of RAM, I don't use a pagefile.  A zero MB page file is the same setting I had prior to rebuilding the C:  Regardless of whether I have a pagefile or not, the problem persists.
I have tried creating a fresh user profile, where the user profile is created on the C: drive by default; and, where I left it there on C: to test for the jerky playback in a new PrPR project  - the problem persists.
Regarding the C: (system drive) and why I reinstalled everything, it had become unstable and was locking up.  I ran DISK ERROR CHECKING with the FIX parameter and the system was still locking up on me.  Keep in mind that the System drive is a solid state drive.  Anyhow, I had no choice but to dive in and reinstall everything.  I wiped the system partition of the SSD using quick format and started installing the operating system.  Now, I've read the CLAIM that this cuases performance issues; but, the only place I see issues is in the video monitor playback in PrPr.  Everything else - Office applications...printing...browsing the Internet...works just fine, everything is responsive, whereas, I couldn't do ANYTHING with it before.

    I'VE RESOLVED THE PROBLEM!
    PREFACE:
OK, I am hoping that through this week-long Operating-System-and-Software-reinatalltion excerise of mine, I have revealed something that everyone -- whom have been cursing Adobe over -- can apply to their systems to resolve this jerky video problem within PremierePro CS5 (and quite possibly other versions, too).
If you've read my post above, you've seen all the steps I've taken to resolve the problem.  I've read many posts, some of which have mentioned  hardware upgrade / opitmization steps that one may take to enhance performance, and hopefully resolve the problem.  I've read where people have taken these steps and have still experienced the problem...and then they curse Adobe.  Fer-shame, fer-shame, fer-shame! (nod to Gomer Pyle).
In my case, I knew it wasn't an Adobe issue, as it had worked flawlessly before; and, it wouldn't require a hardware upgrade or reconfigureation, as my system is completely maxed out with two processors, a system drive and a hardware RAID5 array, a CUDA-suported nVIDIA 4800 FX card, and 96 GB of RAM.  bla bla bla, puke...whatever.  Bottom line is this:
It's not a software issue.  It's not and Adobe issue; and Gawd no!  It's NOT a PC vs. Mac issue!  HA HA.  The software had worked swimmingly well prior to the reinstallation / 'lobotomy' I perfomed on the system drive.
    SOLUTION FOR ME:
Download and install the updated drivers for the motherboard.  Mine is an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC.  Intel has an INTEL DRIVER UPDATE UTILITY which automatically scaned my Intel system and identified drivers which needed updating.  A very handy, time-saving tool!!!  Here's the URL: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu
The scan revealed two Intel drivers needing an update:
    Intel Chipset
    Wired Networking
    and one non-intel driver:
    Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-fi
I downloaded and installed these three drivers, rebooted, and tested PremierePro, and was extatic to find this resolved the problem.
If you have a motherboard from another manufacturer, then you may want to navigate over to their wibsite to locate chipset and other updated drivers for your motherboard.
    ROOT CAUSE:
While Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate was able to install certain default drivers during the Operating System installation (keeping in mind that this was done on an Intel Solid State Drive that I formatted using Quick Format) these default chipset drivers apparently weren't current and were ultimately the root cuase of the jerky video playback within PremierePro CS5.
    Peace

  • Sony DSR-45A? Possible for NTSC Monitor Playback from Quicktime?

    Title says it all.
We have a new Mac Pro with two 22" monitors using both of the graphic car DVI ports.
However with have this beatiful 60 inch monitor next to us that we would like to hook it up to.
The monitor has BNC Component connections, VGA connections, A/V Connections, and more.
We have a Sony DSR-45A deck hook up to our computer via firewire.
We hooked up the deck using the component BNC cables.
I know in Final Cut Pro we can run footage back and forth from the deck to the computer and back into the monitor for playback.
What I would like to know is if Quicktime could also read the DSR-45A and play stuff on the NTSC monitor or if there is any other program that can playback footage on the monitor through the DSR45A.
Or am I out of luck and should just suck it up and get 2nd graphics card.
Please note I just spent $20,000 If i can save $600 by getting around not buying a graphics card I would love to.

  • Preview monitor playback 'sticks' with certain types of footage.

Hi there, I wonder if anyone could help me with this problem.
I am going through a Apple certified FCP training book with a DVD of footage for video editing. I a have copied the footage onto my hard drive as recomended. However, some clips will not play back with any motion through my preview T.V, it just sticks and parks wherever your playhead was before the footage began or once stopped. You can watch it back fine in the canvas on FCP obviosly, but the preview monitor is sticking and not playing along with it?
The training footage is set correctly because it configures your FCP to match the settings that the author was using.
My settings seem fine for standard DV editing as I loaded up some of my old Mini DV quicktime footage and it runs in FCP and through my T.V monitor in real time with the canvas/timeline. However I have DVCAM video footage to edit soon and when I also try to play it this also sticks on the preview T.V and doesn't follow the canvas until you stop playing and then it lands on the frame that i am parked on.
I imagine its my settings more than anything, I dont see how playing around with standard mini DV footage in the canvas is fine with the preview T.V and and not the DVCAM footage?
I am going out the mac via firewire into a Datavideo AD converter which in turn is going to the preview T.V via S-Video, with the audio phono into an amp. Like I say, works a treat with standard DV footage.
Thanks for your time and hope you can help me!

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Why Cant My Monitor playback 24fps Footage smoothley

    Hi All
Ive been tearing my hair out today. My boss seems to thin I am able to preview an edit project, with a sequence setting of 24fps in my external Monitor. I have two monitors, one a broadcast CRT the other a Sony Bravio Plasma.
I dissagree tho, I thought you could only watch 24fps smoothly in the broadcast monitor IF you convert it to 25fps first. Am I right?
When I try to play back 24fps in the broadcast monitor it skips the last frame of each second, I assume the missing 25 frames, ie, its looking for 25 frames, and is only finding 24.
Is there an external playback setting in FCP 6 that will allow me to view 24fps smoothly in the broadcast crt without having to export and convrt to 25fps?
    Cheers
P.S Do any other editors out there hate being clicked at by clients in an edit as much as I do?
    haha

Since your SD broadcast monitor works only with a standard 25fps PAL signal, FCP must supply this. If your sequence is an SD 24fps edit, then you have two options. You can watch with the current nasty 1 frame dupe or you can use the 24@25 pulldown option which will smooth the playback a lot more while maintaining a 24fps playback speed.
To do this, go into the FCP 'System Settings' then on the 'Playback Control' tab select '24@25 Pulldown' from the 'Pulldown Pattern' drop down menu.
This is the standard method for viewing FCP PAL 24fps sequences on external SD monitors.
Of course if you are working in HD other options become available to monitor at true 24fps.

  • External monitor playback not showing up ever since updating to the new CC 2014 app.

Upon updating to the newest version of PProCC (2014), I have lost all ability to use my external monitor even though it is checked in my playback preferences.
I need this monitor back up ASAP as it is my client monitor and without it I cannot do my job.
In conclusion, I just want to add that this is just one of many issues I have been experiencing on the new 2014 app along with constant crashing and the occasional render artifacts/unwanted freeze frames in my preview files. Very buggy, very disappointing, very poor show adobe. Bad time to get rid of your PPro phone support team!

  • Canon XL-H1 capture and monitor playback not working

    Yes...that's right...I am asking a question.
I have been doing some shooting with the Canon XL-H1. So that I can actually say that I have shot and worked with HDV footage. And so I can test the Matrox MXO with HDV footage. Shooting has been fun, but now it comes to time to capture the stuff...or even play it back on my HD monitor, and for the life of me it isn't working.
Yes...I read the manual. In fact, that is one of the reasons I am writing.
In the manual, on page 98, it says to play back the footage I need to pres MENU, go to the SIGNAL SETUP option and choose PLAYBACK STD and set it to the format that I have been shooting, DV or HDV. Well, that option is greyed out...I cannot access it. Same thing for capturing, I need to set this to the format I shot to capture it, but it isn't available. It won't let me select it.
    Any ideas why?
    APPLE, ARE YOU LISTENING!?!
    Shane

it'll play back if you shoot at 29.97 thru the sony but won't play back thru sony if you shoot at 24. The only way I can keep TC is to bump it to DVCProHD tape, then use the HD deck to injest via HDSDI. for cheap clients TC is out the window, or they may just need a few shots or pickups and they'll line it up visually. what I want to try next time it's used in house is come off the hdsdi spigot to a Panasonic HD Deck @ 1080i. The Canon rep says the optical block is full HD passed to the HDSDI spigot, only becomes HDV when it hits tape. I'd like to test see if it's smoke and mirrors or what. goal is to compare oranges to oranges.
set up chip charts focus charts and the like do some pans zooms see if we can see a difference between the dvcproHD tape and the HDV tape HDSDI in. Just a want to know thang.

  • Setting output for monitoring playback

I have FCS 2 and something that bugs me in Soundtrack Pro now is that my output for playback seems to have to be the same as for my system. I have other things going on my Mac that might generate sounds while I am working in Soundtrack Pro and don't like hearing it all while editing. I generally use my optical jack for general purpose listening but when editing I use a firewire 410 going out to either headphones or a set of monitors. Is there a way to set Soundtrack Pro to use the firewire 410 for playback without having to change my system audio output in the system preferences? The only settings I could find in Soundtrack Pro were for recording.
    Thanks,
    D.J.

I use a Layla 3g audio interface, 8 analog I/Os, which connects via SPDFI optical to a LavryBlack DA 10 converter. In Logic Pro to hear my audio tracks I therefore set their output to Output 9-10.
I can find no way to do this in STP. I have the Layla 3g chosen as default both in my System Prefs and in Audio Midi Setup.
If STP only allows output assignment of a track to 1-2 this is extremely lame but perhaps i simply do not know how.

  • Monitor playback issues in PE9

    Hi,
I am posting on behalf of a colleague and I wonder if anyone has encountered the following issue or has any advice about resolving it.
When he starts a new project in PE9 and captures via firewire the capture monitor plays back fine but when switching back to the timeline/preview monitor there is no video playback, it just stays on the first frame of the clip in the timeline.
Similarly if he opens an existing project the timeline/preview monitor video playback is fine but if the capture window is then opened there is no video playback in that.
The only way around it is to reboot the PC and then start again with the required monitor.
In both instances the audio plays back fine.
The playback seems fine when scrubbing along the timeline.
This is a recent development, both capture and preview monitors used to function without a problem.
It's not an Windows or Adobe update issue as the PC is not connected to the internet.
    It's a Dell PC, Win7 64bit, Intel i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, nVidia graphics card, 2TB hard drive.
Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

"It's not an Windows or Adobe update issue as the PC is not connected to the internet."
Actually, that could be part of the issue. You NEED to be connected to the internet and get all of the necessary updates. Even Windows 7 is on SP1 -- and your graphics card driver is probably a year out of date, even if the computer is brand new.
    Other possible issues:
You don't say, but is this a miniDV camcorder connected by FireWire?
Are you capturing to your C drive or to a second hard drive?
You've got a pretty fast processor and it should fly with miniDV video. But without any operating system or Adobe or nVidia updates -- or the requisite latest version of Quicktime -- there's no telling what's going on with your configuration!

  • EMU 0404USB monitor/playback problem

I am having a problem with the headphone/monitoring on my 0404USB. My computer is recording the material just fine (I am able to mixdown to WAV and it plays just perfect) However, the headphone output is distorting and "scrambling" after about 20 secs of playing. I don't think its my computer because it messes up even when I'm monitoring only the direct signal independent of the CPU. It also behaves the same way when I'm listening to playback after recording. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

If you have ever enabled "desktop preview" or such, that can mess up the external monitor I have found. However, just make sure that is turned off, refresh external, etc.

Is that true for all GoPro video formats or just some of the newer (higher resolution/frame rate) one?  The GoPro has several different pre-sets and I typically like to get as much resolution as possible for my source and for highspeed subjects like sports I try to use higher framerates as well.  Are you suggesting that I convert the source files to Cineform avi and then edit those resulting AVI's in CS6?

  • Monitor Playback Gone?

Using FCP 5.1.4 connected to Sony DSR-11 through DV/USB cable. Monitor is connected to DSR-11 through S-Video (video) and RCA (audio). Communicates fine in Log and Capture, had Monitor working (mirroring) the Canvas in FCP, then when reopening SAME project no more Monitor? Have confirmed proper A/V Device settings (I think?), cable connections and DSR-11 settings (I think?) but can't get Canvas on Monitor?

Sounds like the only reason it worked when in log and capture mode was because of the s-video and rca connection from the deck. When you were playing a tape in the deck, the monitor would show that, and not the computer data. You can't mirror your desktop through Firewire. In Final Cut Pro, go to View/Video Output and choose the Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480) option, then go to View/External Frames and select All Frames. (Or you could press cmd-F12 on the keyboard.)
The external monitor won't show your desktop, it will only show video out put from FCP when external frames is turned on.

  • Program Monitor playback resolution

In the program monitor 1/8 and 1/16 are grayed out.  How do I enable them?

"Not all resolutions are available for all sequence types. For Standard Definition sequences, such as DV, only Full and 1/2 are available. For many HD sequences up to 1,080 frame size, Full, 1/2, and 1/4 are available. For sequences with frame sizes larger than 1,080, such as RED, all the fractions are available."

  • CS6 multi-camera monitoring playback is slow/stops entirely

    Hey all,
I've been searching forums for a workaround to this and I've come up empty - either the conversation gets bogged down in video card/hardware discussions or moves away from the issue entirely.
I am working on a 2012 Mac Pro tower with 24GB of ram and an ATI HD 5870 card. I've got 5 edited sequences for a music video that I've rendered out and I've nested those five to create an editional edit from those. I rendered to apple pro res 422 HQ, which is generally what I use for my working files. I had (relatively) no issues rendering out the 5 sequences/multi camera editing those (each containing 4 different camera angles). Now, when trying to pull those 5 sequences together and doing a multi cam, playback doesn't roll for more than 1-2 seconds before grinding to a half. My source files are on a seperate, internal HD from my project file, and I can't think of what else I might be able to do to get this to work
Any ideas? Help would be much appreciated - I really want to this multi cam edit to be the base of the video and from there I'll get more creative with my cuts and add clips manually.

You would have been better off just editing the native media, I think.  PP is a different animal than FCP.  You'll no longer need some of the bad habits you picked up using it.
