Monitor recomendations anyone???

Believe it or not, I'm still using my Lacie 20 inch CRT's on my older PowerMac G5.  But Adobe and Apples decision not to offer upgrades to non-Intel based Macs are finally forcing me to buy a new computer  @%$&#$.  So CS5 has essentially started a chain reaction here... new CS5 upgrade means new computer... new computer means new monitors!  Can any of you suggest a good monitor to work in Photoshop with?  I currently have two monitors and I'm thinking I'd be better off with two new monitors in the 20 inch range instead of buying one large monitor. ()  I have decided that the Mac monitors are over priced, (as most Apple stuff is)  and money IS an issue here. (after all I do live in michigan ')  I'm hoping that y'all can give me some opinions on what monitors I can buy without breaking the bank, and that still would be suitable to work for working In photoshop on professional portraits.

For cheaper monitors I swear by Dell. My experience is that they are just as good as the Apple ones, even though I read in a review that the quality is supposedly not as consistent. I've been using one for high-end photoshopping on my second workstation for years and it's been working (and looking) very nicely.
Also, I would highly recommend getting a 30" monitor if you can afford it. It makes working on vertical images a whole different experince, with a lot less panning involved.
Here are the ones I can recommend (Note: make sure you only ge tone of their high-end monitors NOT their cheapest models which are a whole different story):

  • Need monitor recomendation.

    Hello,
I just have a Mac Book Pro to do my editing on. Is there a set-up where I can push my output to both my 24" Cinema Display and external video monitor. Or do I have to choose one or the other? In any case, can anyone recomend a monitor?
    Thanks, Ed

If you are editing DV, you use firewire to drive the external video monitor and DVI to drive the second computer monitor. How to connect things up is covered in the FCP manual.
Since Sony has discontinued the PVM series, about your only reasonably priced choices are the JVC TM-H150CGU 15" or the TM-H1750CGU 17" monitors. I've no experience with them.
If you are editing HDV, the Matrox MXO will let you use a 23" Apple Cinema Display (or the Dell 24" widescreen) as the external HDV monitor. Or, you could purchase a AJA ioHD and use that to drive an external HDTV.
The broadcast versions of HDTVs are hideously expensive.

  • W520 - why only two external monitors? Anyone from Lenovo?

    Hi,
From what I can gather, the W520 does not have "hybrid Optimus" mode and hence can drive only two external monitors, even when connected to the mini-dock.
Can anyone (from Lenovo?) tell me if this a hardware or software issue? Is an update to change this possible?
Why did Lenovo make this disappointing choice?

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-76767.html and http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-76617 don't match.  The first document says 3 of the 5 display connectors on the dock can be used at the same time. In the second document, the W520 is nowhere to be found on the quad display sections.
Could we get clarification if this is working as designed on the W520 (only 2 connection active from the dock) or a bug and it should do three?

  • Database uptime monitoring by either snmp or active monitor script anyone?

    Hi,
Has anyone previously setup any type of active monitoring script through whats up gold or an snmp informant type of monitoring script to advise when a database is down or specific process is down?
An example would be like ORACLE_PKG1, and the process is named ora_smon_hrprd88.
This is what the HP-UX “ps” shows:
    tpadb01:/# ps -ef | grep -i ora_smon
    oracle 13207 1 0 Jan 1 ? 0:29 ora_smon_epprd88
    oracle 13281 1 0 Jan 1 ? 1:31 ora_smon_hrprd88
    oracle 13635 1 0 Jan 1 ? 1:03 ora_smon_fsprd84
    oracle 3620 1 0 Jan 2 ? 0:18 ora_smon_mtprd04
    oracle 14586 1 0 Jan 1 ? 0:23 ora_smon_mtprd05
    oracle 15223 1 0 Jan 1 ? 0:26 ora_smon_inprd88
    oracle 15879 1 0 Jan 1 ? 0:25 ora_smon_epsal88
    oracle 16769 1 0 Jan 1 ? 0:52 ora_smon_hrsal88
    root 17976 22609 0 10:46:39 ttyp2 0:00 grep -i ora_smon
    tpadb01:/#
Not sure if the extra info helps, but you never know. We can set it up to send us database up alerts, but the problem I have is when the listener service is down I can't get my script to finish no matter how I change the values of my script around. I can provide my script if that would help as well. If someone has already done this and is willing to share great!
    Harvey

I would suggest you install OEM Grid Control to monitor your databases. For basic monitoring function it's free. OEM GC works great, it's a little overweight though. It's also use SNMP.
Or you can choose any third party tool like
    Monitoring Oracle Enterprise with Cricket
    http://www.mikehan.com/cricket/oracle.html
or some commercial one like Quest Software.

so u say if my card is just 8 bit.... curently gtx580 , but planing to get 680 or 780 ...... still 8 bit, its not worth getting 10bit monitor or even higher prduction monitor? right?
Right! Those are gaming cards; very fast, but for pro applications they do not support 10 bit. You need a Quadro for that. And its all or nothing: 10 bit monitor, application, OS, and card to support it.

  • HD Monitor recomendations

I'm about to purchase a new Mac and I'm hoping to buy an HD monitor as well, but I don't have any knowledge of that market. I would appreciate any recommends people here have for HD monitors under $1500. For office use only.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm only spouting, trying to force a discussion perhaps.
HD this and that, that's better than this and that's worse than those and every vendor has their own flavor of the month. I can be a hugely elitist pig when it comes to monitoring issues but which display will work best with how may variants of HDV, XDCam, DV100, HDCam, SR, WhatHaveYouHD?
Will a generic recommendation over the web actually be best for the reader? I recently used the new JVC 24 inch display with DVCPRO HD, 720p60 video and I liked it. I have also used professional Panasonic and Sony displays with 720p and 1080i video and to me, those are some of the worst displays that I can think of, not much better than a Vizio from Costco yet there are folks whose opinion I respect that admire those displays.
I dunno, maybe we need more hd formats.

A "duel" is something 2 people do with pistols.

Hi! I did a search on this and there weren't any posts but the ones that I made. That's very sad as I find it a very useful tool to keep me informed on my PC's health and what's going on. I would have thought a forum with these many techs, someone here would know about this tool and how to use it.
Well anyway here's a up date of my monitor for anyone that cares to read my thread. You can see that my PC is quite healthy and is running with no major problems other than a goof up by Goggle.

  • CS5 Playback Settings grayed out and no longer can set playback on external monitor.

I like to view my projects while editing on an external monitor but the Playback Settings are grayed out. I've done all my prior projects with external monitor display enabled with no problems and can go back to a prior projects completed and view them using an external playback monitor.  For some reason, the Playback Settings on my latest project are grayed out and I'm not able to set Desktop Video Display During Playback.
The last project worked on was about 3 months ago. Last week, I started working on two new projects and noticed that I wasn't able to set playback to my external monitor. All my devices are hooked up and I can review older projects on the external monitor but can't set two new projects to use display on the external monitor.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Problem solved. My fault.
The Sequence Preset Settings selected must support the device the external monitor is connected to. In my case, IEEE 1394 firewire. I corrected the new project to the correct Sequence Settings and can now view playback on the external monitor.

"The Desktop Video 9.7.5 software update allows users to take advantage of many new features in the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop applications such as powerful new editing timelines and shortcuts and audio mixing with Adobe Premiere Pro® CC and new creative and visual effects tools with Adobe After Effects® CC."
So everything should be covered on that front. And as I listed, I was getting playback out of AE CC, so I feel it is solely an issue in Premiere. That was worth checking out though since CC is so new. Thanks for replying.

  • Windows 8.1. Update 1 DPI Settings Multiple Monitors

Hi - I am about to post the same on the windows forums but thought it a good idea to start here.
I put the Windows 8.1 Update 1 on a couple of weeks ago - I spend 1/2 my time with the Yoga 2 in desktop mode with multiple monitors so wanted the enhancements.
Since doing so I can't get the font scalling for different monitors working. I've unchecked the "Let me choose one scalling level for all my displays" but whatever i do seems to affect all monitors. On the whole it is fine, but the taskbar on the QHD Yoga is tiny as are all the contect menus. Whatever I do seems to affect all monitors, has anyone else installed the update and see the same/have a solution. It used to work fine.

Sometimes Windows updates will break your graphics driver. That is because Intel and NVidia do not update their graphics drivers on the same schedule that Microsoft
updates Windows, and sometimes the updates are incompatible and cause the graphics driver to do wonky things. In my case that came in the form of lost brightness settings.
I searched these forums for a fix and I could not find one, so now that I know the answer, I am sharing it here.
How do you fix it? You have to reinstall the graphics driver. This is how I did it.
I found the graphics driver install file that was already on my computer and I ran it. It reinstalled the driver in about 5 seconds and my screen brightness functionality was restored.
Where is my graphics driver install file? On my computer it is here:
    D:driversVGAIntelx649.17.10.2932\Setup.exe
Yours is probably in a different but similar location depending on how it was installed and what brand it is, etc. I have a Lenovo
P400 touchscreen laptop with an Intel HD 4000 Graphics.

  • External Monitor in causing Random Sleep and it doesnt wake up!

    Hi all,
After recently buying a new 22" Asus monitor and hooking it up to my macbook core 2 duo (Late 2006 model) running Leopard it has been playing up. I have the computer in clamshell mode, so the top is down and i am using an apple bluetooth keyboard and mighty mouse. The problem is however, every so often my macbook goes into a weird unwakeable sleep. I wouldn't even call it sleep its like it freezes up and the screen goes blank and the light at the front is on, i can also still hear the fans and the hard disk doing their thing. When i try to wake the computer by lifting up the macbooks display the light goes off but nothing happens. The only way i can get the system to run again is by a hard restart. This is really annoying as i can not longer rely on my external monitor, which defeats the purpose of having it!

I have this exact same issue, and am wondering what to do. I have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and am using 10.4.11 as software. I have a Dell monitor. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • 13" Retina with 3 external monitors

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina display and I'm trying to run 3 external monitors.
    I can get 2 external monitors to work when I have 2 Thunderbolt-DVI adapters attached. Or if I have 1 Thunberbolt-DVI, and 1 HDMI-DVI.
However when I attach all three I can still only get 2 of the monitors to work.
I've tried this with Windows 7 on the mac, as well as OSX and neither will display all 3 external monitors.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I have the same problem. Mi 3 external monitors are the same model (LS24C750PS) and are connected with hdmi (1 native hdmi + 2 adapters minidisplayport to hdmi)
Only 2 monitors are active, not 2 in particular, any 2 first connected are active, and the last is innactive.
    please help!!!

  • T520 problems with external monitor resolution

    Hi,
I am on permanent hold right now waiting for a Lenovo tech support rep, so I thought I would just post my issue here. I just purchased a Dell ultrasharp U2713HM monitor and am trying to connect it to my Lenovo T520. Sometimes it sees the monitor and sometimes it doesn't, but that isn't my main issue. The monitor is supposed to be 2560x1440, but all of the resolution settings are greyed out. I know the Lenovo can support it because my last monitor was a Samsung SyncMaster that supported 2560x1440, and it was beautiful (beautiful until the monitor blew up).
I have been on the phone with both Dell and Lenovo, and so far nobody has been able to resolve the issue. I upgraded the NVIDIA graphics card driver (NVS4200M) to the most recent version (310.90) as suggested by Dell, and I switched out the VGA cable for the DVI-D cable (connected to a Dual Link Adapter), as suggested by Lenovo. It stlil isn't working.
I could use any suggestions. I am not techy at all, so this is pretty frustrating. Thank you!!
    Solved!

Okay, another update. I changed the graphics thingy in the bios from NVIDIA optimus to discrete based on someone's suggestion, but that did not work, either with the displayport cable OR the dual link adapter. I also just spoke with the Dell tech, and he basically told me to take it to a shop to see if they could figure it out. In other words, I am out of ideas, and I think I will just return the monitor unless anyone out there has any other suggestoins! Thank you!
Just to be clear, are you saying you have a cable with DisplayPort on both ends and your tried that with the default BIOS setting (Optimus), then Discrete, then Integrated and it didn't work on either of those three settings?
