Monitor recommendations for PS/CS5.5 print work

Hopefully this won't be retreading old ground too much, but I'm looking for monitor recommendations for using with CS5.5 for print work in Photoshop and InDesign mainly on a new Mac Mini. I've got a Spyder 3 for calibration already so that side of things is covered - the Apple Thunderbolt display is a bit of range financially, plus I'm not sure about the glossy screen myself, ideally I'd be looking to spend no more than £500 and size wise about 24" would be the ideal size due to the amount of deskspace available to me. TIA for any/all help/recommendations!

For starters look heere:

The degree of perfection is dependent on your final needs. A studio doing catalog work is going to need a monitor all the way up to top providers like Eizo. for my needs where I output to an Epson 3800 and bigger, I find the dell u2412 to be ideal, and at your price category, maybe 2 will fit the budget.
The 2412 does not cover the full Adobe RGB gamut, but it does cover sRGB IEC 61966-2-1:1999, the current preference for  online color. I use it because correcting the monitor to match the print for b&w is paramount, and the best monitors for this use LED backlight. The u2412 is admirable for this especially at it's price point.
I also use a 2nd monitor but it is a smaller 4:3 aspect ratio. It's use is strictly for tools and such.
The 2412 is a 16:10 aspect ratio and is far better, imo, for graphics work. Also (and maybe especially!) it is very close to the golden mean ratio giving it a wonderful presentation format. Check it out where you see 16:9 and 16:10 side by side.
When I am working closely with adjustment layers I have enough room on my screen to pull over the specific palette next to the image while tweaking, a big help without losing the ability to fill the screen later if you wish. Simply move the palette back to it's home on the other screen.
Good Luck!

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Will the print n share pro app for i pad printer work

WIl the Print n share pro app for i pad printer work?

    Jspence706-
I have the non-pro version of Print n Share.  It works OK as long as I use the built-in programs for text, web browsing, mail and photo.  However, it can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.
I'm printing to a networked HP LaserPrinter using the PS (Postscript) setup.
Another alternative is to share your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  There are programs like Printopia and FingerPrint that can do that, and are reported to work well.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.

  • Monitor setup for Premier CS5?

I will be building a stand alone system for Premiere CS5 to edit HDV tape. I'm a graphic designer by trade and video editing is completely new to me. In addition to building a monster system I'm not sure what to do for monitors. Is it pretty standard to run a dual monitor setup in Premiere as it is with most adobe programs since you can put all your pallets on the 2nd monitor? What size monitors are a standard for premiere? Our IT department tried to get us to use 16x9 format monitors (only 11" tall) on our CS4 systems and they were worthless since only the highest setting kept things in proper perspective and then you couldn't read anything on the screen. So, I'm still using CRT monitors. Also, would it be a wise decision to get a HDTV to hook up to the computer for viewing purposes. I work for a large commercial development company and we will be brodcasting this video to about 12 large HDTVs through out our headquarters. Any advice on monitors would be greatly appreciated.

Those are all 1080P (1920x1080 res) monitors 22 to 24 inch range. For the price, you can't beat them.

  • OT: Monitor recommendations for graphic design/layout

My Samsung 204B just bit the dust after only about 1.5 yrs and need another 20" or so standard aspect monitor...NOT a wide screen. It's really aggravating everything's going to wide screen and leaving us graphic/layout designers to fend for ourselves. I'm looking at the 20" Viewsonic VP2030b but have read a few negative reviews from graphics people. And I don't think I want another Samsung since this one didn't last very long and it was starting to display dead pixels. The one good thing about the 204B while it worked is the ability to fine tune settings to match the printer that handles the magazine I do the layout for, and colors are very accurate. So that's what I'm looking for...accurate color and ability to fine tune settings...RGB, Gamma, etc.
    Any suggestions?

OK, here's the deal....and in answer to Kenneth Benson's "What's wrong with a wide screen?"
It depends on what your needs are. All graphic designers I know including myself like to see a whole page or pages vertically on the screen AT THE LARGEST SIZE POSSIBLE without having to scroll or rotate the screen. With my now defunct Samsung 204B, at 1600 x 1200, pages fit on the screen perfectly without having to scroll, and the image was large enough to easily read the text. My backup monitor that I'm using now is a 17" LG Flatron L1720P with a native res of 1280 x 1024 and with the shallower 1024, the page is smaller and more difficult to read the content at full view...which is why I went with the Samsung. A 22" wide screen has a native resolution of 1680 x 1050 which is of no help for my needs since pages will be basically the same size as what I'm seeing on this 4x3 17" monitor. A vertical res of 1050 is pretty much the same as 1024, so there's no real vertical gain. The only value of a wide screen that I can see is allowing me to spread out menu and tool boxes in InDesign, Photoshop, etc and get them away from the page I'm working on, but I'm now so used to working with a larger image at 1600 x1200, that for my needs it'd be two steps backwards going with a wide screen. It all comes down to what's best for the type of work you do.

  • Monitor Recommendations for Graphics

This monitor is for work, I've an NEC 26" at home but I don't want to spend that much, I'm looking at 24" around $500-$600 range. The HP LP4575w seems to get the best all 'round reviews in this range as far as acceptable color for Photoshop, Indesign, etc.
    Any other recommendations/advice appreciated

Dell has a new IPS 24in display, the U2410, which uses a newer version of the LG panel inside the HP 2475w:

  • Maximum number of monitors used for remote desktop not working correctly

My goal is to connect from my home to my work machine but limit the number of monitors used to 2.
At work, I have a machine running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 with dual monitors. My home machine is Windows 8.1 Pro and it has 3 monitors (on two video cards).
I followed the instructions of the MSDN blog post about using multiple monitors for remote desktop but cannot get it to work right.
Here's what I see when I modify the group policy setting "Limit maximum number of monitors" on the target (work) machine:
    Setting - Result:
    1 - 1
    2 - 1 (???)
    3 - 3
It looks like I can't limit the number of monitors used to 2, I get either one or all. Am I missing something or is this by design?
    Max

    Hi Max,
Support for multiple monitors is available when connecting from any Windows 7/8.1 computer, however, there are restrictions when connecting to a computer using multi-monitor mode. When connecting to Windows 7 computers, only computers that are running Windows
7 Enterprise or Ultimate can be connected to in multi-monitor mode. When connecting to Windows 8.1, only computers that are running Windows 8.1 Professional or Enterprise can be connected to in multi-monitor mode.

  • Any recommendations for A3 colour  printer for small studio?

Need a printer to do A3 or A3+ printouts for client mockups in small studio.
Can anyone recommend one? Needs to be networked with 3 people using it.

Formally, your question belongs on the Apple ColorSync Users list and not here, but Pages is the place where photography and typography come together, so here goes.
    1. Stay away from toner-based printing devices. They tend to have a tiny gamut, too small for the RGB colour space in which you capture and correct your photographs, and too small for proofing.
    2. Stay away from printing devices intended for the office imaging market. These devices tend to have a small hardwired RGB colour space, that is, sRGB.
You may not be able to work around the cap on the colour gamut in an ICC characterisation of the colour device, so you can't get at its full colour gamut.
    3. For presentation printing and proof printing, a graphic arts CcMmYK inkjet with bright and neutral white substrate produces a colour gamut you can use in two ways.
    a. For presentation printing you can address the whole gamut of the inks+substrate, reproducing as much as possible of the colour space within which you capture and correct photographs. Use the smart 3D gamut comparison in the ColorSync Utility to see what you could be loosing.
    b. For proof printing you can clip the large gamut to the size and shape of the gamut of the intended printing condition, adding paper white simulation for D50 visual matching and matching by colour measuring instrument for contract proofing using a control strip.
There are contract quality presentation-printing and proof-printing RIPs for Mac OS X Server. BEST/EFI Colorproof by a group of people in Germany is one such. They have a forum where you can work out questions on configuring rendering intents, or you can ask on the Apple ColorSync list.

  • Any recommendations for buying a printer for my Mac Book Pro

Looking to buy a printer for my Mac Book Pro!! Any recommendations???

Any will work. "AirPrint" compatible printers will work even better, since they require no setup whatsoever, and will even work with iOS devices  (and with some compatible android/windows phones) you might end up buying.

  • Recommendations for a Scanner that works with Mac OS 10.6.4

Hi: I bought my first iMac back in February 2010 and have really been enjoying it. However, I would like to know a good scanner to scan mostly pictures. Any recommendations are welcome.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Any Scanner that supports TWAIN should work fine. Look for that when reviewing scanners. I have an HP multifunction printer that has a scanner and that works fine for me. Although if you are looking for a photo scanner then there are others perhaps better suited for the task out there.

  • Heart Rate Monitor Recommendations for iPhone 4S and/or iPod 3G?

I've recently started using the Nike+ app and sensor for tracking my walking/treadmill activity.  Unfortunately, it does not work on an elliptical machine, but it's still a lot of fun and I'm doing something good for myself in the process.
The next step is to track my heart rate during exercises, which requires a heart rate monitor (strap) that communicates back to an iPhone app.  I think I've exhausted the possibilities of getting any heart rate monitor to communicate back to the Nike+ app, unless I'm willing to purchase a brand new Nano and cut my music catalog down by a tenth, so that isn't happening.  So I'm looking at a heart rate monitor that will communicate with a widely used, reliable and/or low cost iPhone 4S app, preferably one that can work at the same time as the Nike+ app that is stock, resident and free on the iPhone and which I use and will continue to use while walking with the Nike+ sensor that gets attached to my shoelaces.
The next step is the heart rate monitor itself (strap).  Lots and lots of choices out there but all roads lead toward Wahoo Fitness and their combination ANT+ plug into the base of the iPhone, and the heart rate monitor strap.  Looks like I can get them both on Amazon for about $60, which is a lot cheaper than I saw elsewhere.  Very expensive line of products.  And lots of "hopefullys" - hopefully, it won't drain my battery down on moderate to long walks; hopefully, I can run their app and the Nike+ app at the same time without interfering with one another (they do have a stride sensor but that's just more money that I've already spent on the Nike+ sensor which works fine); and hopefully, the stock strap will fit a 52" - 54" chest (I'm a big guy, they offer no data, they have no contact number, I'd have a drop them a support email and just wait for a response, company reputation for customer service is not good).
So am I looking at the best choice for my needs, or has anyone else recently purchased a similar system for measuring heart rate, stride and/or any other critical components of their exercise routine?  I am up for suggestions and not making any purchases so fast.
Last but not least, my current Nike+ app and sensor also work with my old iPod 3G running iOS5, I'm hoping that whatever I wind up with will work on that setup as well.
    Thank you.

Thank you very much for the response.  I actually purchased and have already returned a Polar heart rate monitor strap and a Nike+ Sportsband.  I could not even get them to work, and the strap was very small on me (I've got a 54" chest).  All roads lead towards Wahoo, but customer support is ABYSMAL.  You basically have to email them a question and wait for a response back, they have no chat or phone.  Ridiculous.  Anyway, my questions to them are pretty basic, maybe you can answer:
1.) The strap that you recommend works only with the 4S, which is fine, but I also have an iPod 3G that I'd like to use as well.  Some of their other straps are compatible with both.
2.) There's no measurement on the Polar strap that I just returned, so I have no way of comparing the fit on one or more of these Wahoo straps versus the Polar one.  I know that I just need a big one (XXL or better).  How is the fit on the one that you have?
3.) The whole reason why I initially went the Polar/Nike+ route was to go with the least complicated setup to get real time data on stride, distance, calories, etc. PLUS heart rate.  All on pretty much two screens (iPhone and Sportband), and with the idea that I could still multitask during a workout (i.e. check email, send a text, toggle between any open apps, etc.).  All of my research so far indicates that a Wahoo setup is going to have problems with this.  First, the rumor is that no app using a Wahoo heart monitor strap is going to allow you to exit that app and still take active readings (again, this would not have been a problem with the Sportband, but I couldn't get it to work).  Then even if that works, I don't know if the chosen Wahoo app will be able to measure heart rate while Nike+ and a shoe sensor are still measuring stride, distance, etc. (i.e. will they interfere with one another?  Will I be forced to purchase the Wahoo stride sensor too, and then it gets back to which apps work with the stride sensor, will they allow multitasking, etc.?)
It would be SO much easier for me if these Wahoo folks had a PHONE and could answer my questions.  To make purchases, try things out, return them, etc. that's crazy.  Waiting a day or two for presales questions in this day and age is unacceptable, but that's where I'm at.  I'd appreciate your continued input on this.
Btw, there is a third option beyond Polar/Nike+ and Wahoo, and that's Garmin, but the app reviews were horrible.  Wahoo was the cheapest overall, I just need to know that it's going to work and serve my needs before making the purchase.
    Thanks.

  • Dual monitor recommendation for 2 floors? [SOLVED]

I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to go about setting up X so that I can toggle it between floors of my house.  I currently have the computer on the main floor, hooked up to a monitor and keyboard there.
What I would like to do is also connect the computer to a TV and wireless keys in the basement (AKA play games on a giant screen ).  I want to avoid making the screen span across the monitors would be typical if 2 monitors sat side-by-side, because if I accidentally toss a window on the wrong screen, i have to go to the other floor to figure out where it is and put it on the other screen.  And that way any games or whatever would not be half upstairs and half downstairs.
I use the nvidia driver (so maybe if there is a way that twinview can do this...?).  First floor monitor is 4:3.  TV in basement is widescreen.  My plan ideally would be to make a script that would call xrandr (or something like that) to toggle between floors. That way I can just press a button on the keyboard to switch location.
My thought is that since I can only be on one floor at a time, it would turn off one screen and put everything on the other screen when I toggle, rather than doing some sort of extending across 2 screens.  Kinda like if you take a laptop and hook it to a docking station and it shuts off the laptop's screen and uses a bigger monitor instead of the laptop's screen.  That way I can start something on the first floor, then switch and continue it in the basement.
Any thoughts on the best way to go about this?  This is my first time playing with multi-monitor setups (although I'm looking more for a toggle between them that changes the resolution to match the different aspect ratio of the screens, rather than extending the monitor across 2 screens).
Oh, and to complicate things, the monitor (which is on the first floor) has bad EDID, so I had to put in some modelines and tell it to ignore the EDID - this works fine on its current single-monitor setup.
    Thanks in advance!

OK   I am now posting this using a 55-inch tv as my monitor
I did decide to go with ngoonee's twinview method rather than setting it up for independent consoles, for reasons mentioned earlier.  Getting rid of "Clone" helped and my next step is to put together a quick script to toggle when i press the magic button on the keyboard.
One minor note is Conky doesn't reseat itself automatically with the screen change, so I will just kill and restart it in my toggle script.
One major note is that setting it off of "Clone" was not enough to stop the panning behavior when I first bring up X.  This is what was happening:
    X starts
X sees that the TV has a big resolution, so it decides to make a big virtual area to match.
X sets the metamode (as it should) to initially use the 1280x1024,NULL mode (just using the regular monitor, not the tv).
    KDM starts up at 1280x1024
The screen now pans to a bunch of garbage outside of that area when i move the mouse towards the edge.  This is because of that giant virtual area, even though KDM is in the smaller 1280x1024 area.
To fix this, I needed to make xrandr set the resolution before kdm starts.  So I added "xrandr -s 0" to the file /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup
This causes X to execute xrandr prior to KDM startup.  This fixes it from panning around a giant virtual area.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions - I think I have a better understanding of this now

  • Hardware configuration recommendations for database and VM work

I'm looking for advice on system configuration for a computer to use at work for database, VM, and number-crunching applications. The database work will involve complex SQL queries against MySQL databases in the 5–50 GB range. I'll be using the computer for a variety of projects, and I'd like to configure and run Linux VMs on a per-project basis. The number-crunching will involve engineering applications, most of which will likely run in Linux. The database tables might be accessed from OS X or a Linux VM; I'm not sure at this point.
Advice or recommended reading on internal RAID, SAS, Fibre Channel, and the like would be appreciated. Would it make sense to have a large SATA boot drive that stores the VM and a second high-throughput drive array for the database tables? If so, what are some good options for configuring the latter? Staying in the $5k–$7k range would be nice.
    Thanks,
    Andreas

FileMaker is the best option if you want a good GUI front end. It's not free like MySQL but the price is worth it.
