Monitor resolution 1900x440 gone in mountain lion.

Hi everybody,
Just got a new MBP 15 inch. The resolution by default is 1680x1050. On my old MPB 15, it is 1440x900 which is better for me.
I saw different links explaining how to change this with the sudo command (since the apple.boot.plist is locked) as you will read on http://www.projectosx.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t313.html but either it is not working anymore on mountain lion or I don't do this
correctly, which possible. Anyway, I did what it says, used the "writeout" command and have the resolution written in apple.boot.plist.
It did not appear in the preferences application.
Any advice ? The resolution I have is too small...
Thanks and have a good day !

I don't understand why I have different settings.
Because my screen and graphics are different than yours.
However, 1440 x 952 seems like a strange choice, verify that it is not 1440 x 900.
If you have a new 15" MacBook Pro, non-Retina display, these should be your choices:

  • Can you go back to lion if you have already gone to Mountain Lion? I wish I had the old OS back.

Can you go back to lion if you have already gone to Mountain Lion? I wish I had the old OS back.

    Try this:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • External monitor issues after upgrade to Mountain Lion

MacBook Pro 5,4, upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 when installing replacement SSD. Trying to connect to Vizio VMM26F tv/monitor in dual monitor display. In the past, under Lion, this monitor worked flawlessly with MiniDisplay to DVI adpater/cable. (In addition, a second MBP 5,3 with Mountain Lion worked flawlessly in this setup.)
Today, after upgrade, I plugged the monitor in as usual. It is simply not detected using the DVI adapter/cable. I had a VGA cable and adapter, so switched to that. Image appears on monitor. But about once per minute the monitor disconnects -- Vizio goes black, MBP goes blue, then the images reappear after a variable delay. Sometimes Vizio shows "No Signal" message, other times not.
This monitor is no longer manufactured, but its web site does not show any driver/firmware downloads.
No firmware updates show in software update for the MBP.
Any suggestions for making this monitor reliable?

I don't know if this will 'fix' your problem, but have you tried the 10.8.5 Supplemental Update -> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1686?

  • AHH. Windows gone after mountain lion upgrade?

    Hi!
I have a late 2011 model MBP. And i had the dual boot option with windows 8 (release preview) installed. On Thursday (4 days ago) i upgraded OSX to mountain lion. But just today i had the necessity to back to windows, and the option is not there anymore... when i boot up my mac and press the "option key" the only hard drives i get are the "macintosh HD" and the "recovery 10.8".
    What happened to Windows?
I tried using boot camp to "remove windows 7" but after hours of "partitioning the Macintosh HD" i gave up and quit the application. All i wanted to do was remove windows completely and re-install it via boot camp again.
    Now i am windows-less. HELP!!!
Do i have an option of going back in time (kind of like system restore on windows) and going back to OSX lion? all i want is to go back 4 days ago when things were working fine.
oh no... something tells me i'm gonna have to erase everything on my mac and start all over again

Hi "thiememd" Unfortunately, i couldn't find a way to keep Windows on my mac so i erased the entire partition (without bootcamp) by following the steps in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8wdy5qW8Z8
Luckily, i had done a back up on windows b4 mountain lion screwed me over. so now all i'm gonna do is re install windows once again.

  • IMovie and Garage Band gone after Mountain Lion upgrade.

I upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion by buying it in the itunes store and uploading it.  Now, imovie and garage band are gone.  I have nothing in My Purchases, as these came with my mac when I bought it, and I don't think I have a cd.  Can I get these back without buying new?

As shldr said, iLife applications (iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, iDVD and iWeb) came preinstalled on your Mac, so if you made a clean install of Mac OS X, they were deleted because Mac OS X doesn't include iLife apps.
In order to install the iLife applications again, you need the Applications DVD that came with your Mac, so insert it and follow the steps to install your iLife applications. If you haven't got the DVD, call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 After installing the applications, open Apple menu > Software Update to install the most recent version

  • IChat is gone after Mountain Lion

I recently updated my macbook pro to Mountain Lion and now, iChat is gone. How do you contact with your friends who still have iChat when you have Messages?

You would need an account for .Me or AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), etc. Then you add the account in Messages' preferences.
Check out the Help screens for Messages, they cover everything:

  • External/second monitor no longer recognised by Mountain Lion

    I have a 21.5-inch, Late 2009 iMac running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.
I've had my iMac connected to my 42" LG HDTV for several years using a Mini Displayport to HDMi adaptor > HDMi to HDMi cable - using it as both a mirrored & Extended display.
I recently unplugged my iMac (and all my other peripherals) from my TV (for some 'spring cleaning' & only for around an hour) but now my iMac can no longer detect my TV.
Now when I switch it on my LG TV says 'No Signal' (for the first few hours of trying when I turned on my TV (on the correct AV channel of course!) I would get a flash of blue screen on my iMac, then nothing would happen and I would just get the 'No Signal' message on my TV).
I have searched for solutions on numerous forums - unplugging, plugging-in in various arrangements. The 'Detect Displays' option doesn't do a thing.
I've tested other peripherals in the HDMi ports on my TV and they all work. I've tried PRAM resets, system restore settings, rolling back time machine etc etc...
I'm loathed to buying another cable as I know this one works, and it must just be a software issue as the iMac (was) detecting the TV.
I don't have another HDTV with HDMi to test it out - but I know it is a problem with the Mac and not the TV...Has anyone come accross this/a similar issue? Is there a solution?

I have the exact same problem although on my Macbook Pro from 2012 using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter.  I can sometimes get it to work by putting the computer to sleep, unplugging&replugging the displayport, and then waking it up.  For me, it started happening in 10.8.2 and then seemed to get worse in 10.8.3.  I suspect it might be hardware that's slightly out of spec and thus detects the displayport change but then don't go any further.

  • Midi in Safari gone after Mountain Lion update

I have a site that relies on midi files being played in the browser. Right up until before I upgraded to Mountain Lion I was able to play files with the .mid extension, now they just download instead or if embedded give me the 'missing plugin' message.
I have checked my installed plugins and I have quicktime 7.7.1 which doesn't list .mid as a supported extension anymore.
I can play .mid files through the QT 7 player which lists itself as Version 7.6.6 (1709) but under this is Quicktime 7.7.1 (2599).
So I don't know if the player is using something other than 7.7.1 or not. If it was just stock standard 7.7.1 then why has my .mid files stopped being played in the browser?
Is .mid support really being dropped if so does anyone know of a plugin to get back midi playback?
    Regards

    Well - here from Denmark.
Vi also need midi in our browsers.
A simple yes or no to the question - Will it ever come back to Mac?
Other vise we are going back to PCs in the future.
    Thanks

  • Alias Previews Gone since Mountain Lion upgrade

In my dock, I have a Shortcuts folder, where all my aliases are (mainly for commonly used Word, Excel, Numbers, Pages and PDF documents). In Lion, these aliases displayed thumbnail preview images of the actual documents. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, these previews have disapeared - all I get are standard, generic icons.
I get the feeling there's a checkbox I need to be ticking somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Anyone got any ideas?

Here it is October of 2013, and I'm having a similar problem. I'm using Mountain Lion 10.8.5, I just upgraded a month or so ago.
I don't know about aliases showing generic icons, but if I try to open a file via the alias from Excel for Mac 2011, I get the message, "Excel cannot open this file.  The file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
I've tried with leaves " alias" at the end of the extension, I've tried after removing the " alias".
I've tried using aliases that were created prior to upgrading, and I've tried using newly created aliases.
This is true for Word documents, also.
It's also true when I try to upload to Google Drive. It can't recognize the file when I upload from an alias. This used to work just fine.
I'll keep searching for an answer, but I've been looking for awhile now and this is the first information I've found that comes close to my problem.
Thanks so much for any help!
    Brenda
eta: I forgot to mention that if I double click on the alias file within the Finder, it'll open up just fine in the appropriate app.

  • "Use Audio Port for" gone in Mountain Lion

Where has this feature gone? I remember when I bought my Macbook Pro 13", the headphone jack was advertised as both a headphone and line in jack.
However it is now advertised as just a headphone jack, this is not what I bought.

Interesting news about my audio issue...
I finally called Apple Support after googling around for similar issues and I couldn't find anything. I thought that I might have a hardware problem, but it turns out that my Mac works perfectly. One of the advisors I was talking with told me that the audio jack on the newer MacBook Pros (with the dual Line In/Line Out port) cannot simply have a 1/8th stereo audio cable and it reading as "Line In" under the Sound pane in System Preferences. He said that for whatever reason, Apple removed the option to do that.
He told me that my only option was to use a USB sound card with a Line In port on it, because that will show up under the Input tab in the Sound pane in System Preferences.
Then he said that this was something that the engineers could work on and told me to fill out a formhttp://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html and if they get enough of these feedback requests about the Line In issue, they might consider making a fix for it. I asked the advisor if they actually read these requests, and he said that all of the teams have to read these requests.
So in the meantime I ordered a USB sound card so I can record sound coming into the Mac.
So it would be cool if everyone could go to MacBook Pro Feedback and request to have the option to select what the Audio Input can be used for, then maybe they will consider making a fix for this issue.

  • Battery timer gone in Mountain Lion!!

I miss the battery timer! I rely on it for work and I really need it back - does anyone know how to get this (without an external app)??

Seconded, I hadn't even noticed it had gone until I just went to check how long till my air was chared and nothing there - not even the option for anything barring a percentage.
Noticed the timer is there if you click on the battery just not on the default display.

  • Moving application windows between two monitors in Mountain Lion

I have a Macbook Pro that sits on my desk below an external monitor that is hooked into the laptop.  I use the Displays setting to arrange my external monitor on top of my laptop monitor.  Unitl I install Mountain Lion, I used to be able to move windows between the two screens.  Now, all application windows get stuck at the menu bar.  This is not a problem if the external monitor is placed to the right, left, or the bottom of my Macbook Pro screen in the Display setting.  The problem occurs only when it located above the laptop monitor.  Has anyone else experience this and is there a quick fix?

    Hi Jerry,
The arrangement in the displays setting does show correctly.
If I restart the laptop, it will let me move applications between the two displays but as soon as it wakes up from sleep, I can no longer move applications to the external display if it is positioned on top (it will work if it is postioned on either sides or bottom).
I did a fresh reinstall of the Mountain Lion operating system (reformatted the hard drive) but this did not fix it.

  • Quicktime not working properly on Mountain Lion

I recently tried to open an client's AE project on my MACPRO (late 2010, running on Mountain Lion) and everything seemed to be offline, after digging in my client's portable drive, I found all the media but could not reconnect it to the project. AE kept saying the quicktime files were not recognizable, so I checked them, and they all were commun animation files, but nor quicktime 10 nor quicktime pro 7 could play them correctly. Both opened the files but with a blank or greyed window. I try then to playback those media files in my MACBOOK PRO (early 2013, running also in Mountain Lion) and everything played back normally, next I tried opening the AE project and everything worked, I was able to finish the project but I was forced to work on my laptop instead of using my workstation with 2 monitors. Both are running Creative CLoud's AE so Adobe's Software is not the issue, Quicktime seems to be. I tested other quicktime files and noticed that my MACBOOK PRO plays back almost anything I throw at it, while the MACPRO doesn't. Please Help.
    Nesoj.

I sort of hesitate to jump in with all of my ignorance, particularly with no Mountain Lion experience, but I have seen in other threads that apple's recommendation was for Mobility settings to NOT use profile manager but to use good old Workgroup Manager.  Now this rec was for Lion Server.  I had heard that WGM was a goner in Mountain Lion, but I have seen some posts that it still lives for 10.8.  If that is true, you might try getting and using that and see if it makes any difference for mobility.  For those other issues in this thread, well . . . .
In any case, good luck, sounds very exasperating.

  • Why doesn't mountain lion remember my external display settings?

I'm a teacher.  I have a 13" early 2011 MBP with mountain lion (10.8.1, clean install on new SSD).  I have external monitors in my office and at home.  I want them to be the primary when plugged in (with the menubar/dock, and the MBP LCD on the left as the secondary display).  When I'm in classrooms, I want the projectors I connect to to be the secondary display (with the MBP LCD on the right as the primary with menubar and dock).  Snow leopard remembered all of this for each display.  Mountain lion doesn't.  Projectors almost always come up mirrored even if I've connected to them before and reset it.
To make matters worse, the displays menubar option is gone in Mountain Lion.  Argh........
    Ideas?

Ok, I think I found a solution.  I disabled the new clamshell mode behavior by using
sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0" and rebooting, make it work like snow leopard.  Since, it seems to be remembering my 3 displays (classroom projector as secondary on the left, office monitor as primary on the right, and home monitor as primary on the right).  The downside is if you connect everything with the lid closed and get only one display, opening the lid does nothing and there is no easy "Detect Displays".  Maybe I can write an applescript to easily detect displays.
