Monitor Resolution & Design :: Your Thoughts

Something I seldom think about but probably should, is the resolution most users view websites with on their monitors. My 23" Apple Display is set to 1920x1200 and in the past I generally designed my sites with a width of around 800 pixels or smaller to make sure it worked well with most displays. Even so, on occasion when I've been in a client's office and have gone to show someone my work I was aghast at how large it looked on their display due to the lowered resolution settings on their setup.
I used to keep my websites fairly compact in size to work with the smaller monitors, but it seems that the trend is now leaning toward larger designs. I realize that making a site flexible is probably the best way, but some custom designs do better with a fixed size.
I would be interested in feedback on this based on some of your experiences, and how some of you handle this.
Thank you!
Linda

Resolution only limits the maximum practical width you can set for your
browser. In fact, a given page will look *exactly* the same (only smaller
or larger), on any resolution screen provided you keep your browser the
same width in pixels. Thus, I say that resolution is *not* the critical
issue. Browser viewport width is. To make your decision you need to have
some ideas about the following issues -
1. What is the primary target demographic for this site?
2. What are the browsing habits of that demographic? Do they normally have
their browser window maximized on the screen?
3. If they usually have their browser maximized, what is the typical screen
width?
4. If they usually do NOT have their browser maximized, what is the MINIMUM
screen width in that demographic.
5. How do I want to build the page?
a. Fixed width and left aligned?
b. Fixed width and centering?
c. Flexible to fill whatever width from left to right?
d. Flexible (within limits) and left aligned?
e. Flexible (within limits) and centering?
As you can see, this decision is probably much more complex than you
thought, and will require that you know quite a bit about your intended
target visitor and their browsing habits.
If you elect to go with 5a, or 5b, then your decision would be - 'what is
the mimimum browser width I want to support without horizontal scrolling?'.
Once you have determined that minimum supported width, all of your decisions
are made. That's how wide you want your page to be.
If you elect to go with 5c, then you just build your page within a flexible
container (the simplest example - although an obsolet one - would be to use
a 100% width table to hold the entire page). Be aware that pages with
limited text content can look VERY sparse and empty on wide viewports when
built in this way.
If you elect to go with 5d, or 5e, then you would add this sophistication to
your decision matrix -
'what is the greatest width I want to allow the page and its contents to
become?'
In this case, you would use the CSS styles - 'min-width' and 'max-width' on
the primary page container. Just so you'll know, although these styles are
well supported *now*, earlier versions of IE (and some other browsers) will
not support them so reliably.
So - which is it? 8)

  • My Mac mini no longer detects my monitor resolution

My Mac Mini has stopped being able to detect the resolution of my monitor, which is a 1680x1050 Acer widescreen.  1680x1050 is also no longer a choice of resolutions under 'Displays' in 'System Preferences' so I cannot select my monitor resolution manually.  I suspect that there is a bug somewhere in a recent update which has broken support for my monitor.  Is there an official channel by which I can report this bug?  Has it been reported already?  Is there an ETA on a fix?  This renders my Mac more or less unusable.

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.
    1. Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller
    2. Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    3. Clean it, for example with a > Memorex OptiDisc CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner

  • Est. external monitor resolution

I am trying to set up a samsung syncmaster 191Tplus as an external monitor on my macbook from early 2008 running 10.6.8. When I plug it in, both screens flash (not just a flicker) as shown in this youtube video posted by someone else, but my problem is the same
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-Yz-Em2GU4.
I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The resolution of the samsung is 1280x1024, which is not listed in my choice of display resolutions. Is this the cause? What can I do? I can't access settings to change anything after the monitor is connected, and I can't find settings for the external monitor before it is connected. Would using SwitchResX work to create a monitor resolution preset before plugging in the second monitor?

OK, here is something to try. Go into System Preferences and select Displays. In the window that opens will be a checkbox for "Show displays in menu bar." Put a checkmark there and make it active. There should now be a little icon of an Apple display on the right side of the menu bar at the top of the screen. If you click on it, it will drop down and give you a short cut to different resolutions. There should be a checkmark next to the currently active resolution. Is it set to 1440 x 900? If not, set it there.
If you are still getting that message from the monitor, well, I don't think the Mac is lying about sending 1440 x 900. If the screen doesn't look right to you, try using the Auto Adjustment feature on your Viewsonic monitor. It could just be that the image needs adjusting.

But I am getting this alert from SCOM and SCOM has no information about the alert for me to find out what to do - thought that was the point of SCOM to let you know of problems and how to resolve them. :)
The alert is coming from the Error Count Monitor that is part of the Hyper-V Management Pack Extensions (v 4.0.0.0)
I have tried looking in the Event Logs on the Host and there doesn't seem to be any storage related errors there. I am trying to establish if this is a false positive, why it is happening and if it is safe to override and ignore.
There is nothing on the Product Knowledge tab and nothing on the Alert Context other than what I have already mentioned (see below).

  • Dynadock WUXGA monitor resolution

I have a SAMSUNG 730U3E laptop connected to the Toshiba Dynadock U3.0 and have several hardware items connected to the dynadock like network cable, wireless mouse and keayboard and BenQ 24" WUXGA monitor.
I haven't updated my drivers since January 2014 which means i was on the v7.4.51587.0 (aka v7.5 M0) before i went to ugrade to the latest drivers. When i upgraded to the latest avaliable driver v7.7.59540.0 (aka v7.7M3) i noticed my monitor is forced into HD1080 resolution instead of the WUXGA. What's more, i didn't notice any WUXGA resolution avaliable for the monitor in either Windows 8.1 (64 bit) Control Panel options nor in the dynadock U3.0 options menu.
I've tried with various (not all) v7.7 and v7.6 drivers. Every one i've tried missed the WUXGA resolution. Did the dynadock drop support for the WUXGA resolution?
Is there any way how to force the WUXGA resoultion on the new dynadock drivers?
I've currently reverted back to the v7.4 drivers which are mostly stable (with minor issues when i unplug my laptop from the dynadock which usually requires a restart to fix the resolution issue when i plug it back to the dock).

    Hi, James -
Re the monitor resolution, try throwing away the files Display Preferences and Monitor Preferences (the latter is in a folder by the same name). Then restart, and redo any settings necessary in the Monitors control panel.
Make sure the correct profile is selected for your monitor. That selection is made in the Monitors control panel, by clicking the Color button.
Re the sleep function, what is the exact message given?
Are you using the automatic sleep functions in the Energy Saver control panel? Or, are you using the Sleep item in the Special menu or the Control Strip?

G Toolbox has a set of VIs can do this:
    Enumerate Display Mode: Enumerate all supported display modes(width, height, color depth, & frequency) on your computer;
    Get Display Mode: Get current screen resolution, color depth, and frequency;
    Restore Display Mode: Restore the screen resolution, color and frequency to the registry values dynamically;
Set Display Mode: Change screen resolution, color and frequency dynamically, with option of change registry settings.  If no change, the previous settings can be restored with Restore Display Mode, or reboot.

  • Help to reset monitor resolution?

    Greetings,
I have a G5 Quad with an Ati x1900 graphics card running into a 52" Samsung LCD. This was working fine through a dvi-vga adaptor until I switched the monitor resolution from 1920X1080 to 1360X768 which is not supported by the monitor .....blank screen. I plugged another 19" monitor into the other output on the card and both work fine but as soon as I remove the 19" the 52" reverts back to the unsupported mode.
I have reset the pram and tried booting in safe mode but that did not help me.
From bootup the 52" works fine until just before the login screen, then it switches resolution......blank screen.
Would anyone know where these settings would be housed in OS 10.5.1 so I can modify (delete) them?
Any ideas would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Gareth

Thanks so much for your help.
Not wishing to play around in single user mode, I opted to delete the files /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
    /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.xx xx.plist
using my PowerBook over the Firewire with the G5 in target disc mode.
    This worked a treat
    Thanks again

  • Win8.1-TV Monitor resolution need 1360x768 only allow 1280x720 & 1920x1080! Works fine in Win7!

    Win8.1-TV Monitor resolution, need 1360x768 only allow 1280x720 & 1920x1080! Works fine in Win7!
I replace my win7 pc with a win8.1 pc. the TV monitor I was using with Win7 worked fine with 1360x768 resolution, however I don't have that choice with the Win8.1. I tried for months now with default & custom settings. I think is that Win8.1 sees the
display as Funai TV (Sylvania) where as Win7 as the Intel video display driver.
Some suggest edit the monitor.ini, not sure if that will work!
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi, ecscomp,
Based on my research, the resolution of second monitor should be managed by PC's graphic card driver, not Windows. That's to say, if the graphic card driver doesn't had a correspond setting to change display resolution settings, I'm afraid we have no way
to change the resolution to 1366x768.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • How much additional traffic does agentless monitoring add to your network

I know this is not a fully evolved question because you could respond, what MP's (Maintenance Packs) do I have installed, and what all am I monitoring, however I am somewhat new to SCOM 2012, I've set it up and have it going, getting great alerting,
right on so far! I have about a dozen servers that will not install the SCOM agent either from the management server via discovery, nor manually, and I want to be sure as not to overload the network with additional traffic.
    Your thoughts on this please.
This is a great product once you wrap your head around it, and after a solid 4 days on it.  :)

    Hi rapper36,

OpsMgr 2012 Agentless Monitoring resource requirements:
Processor: < 1% average increase in processor utilization
Disk: < 1 average increase in pages per second
Disk: < 1 MB data (as there is no %programfiles%\System Center Operations Manager folder created)
Network: < 1 MB data sent and received to the system during installation
Memory: 14 MB less available memory
Time to Deploy to Monitored state: 2.5 minutes
After the agent was appearing as monitored the performance counters gathered prior to the installation were compared to those gathered after installation. The results indicate additional overhead associated with the Operations Manager 2012 agentless monitoring
after the agent was appearing as monitored.

  • Adjusting for monitor resolution

Hi all. Just a quick question...hopefully it is in the right
    topic.
I think I remember reading here a long time ago, that you
could write a script that would have read the monitor resolution
and load the approperiate index.thml file for that screen and
viewing size. Was I just dreaming or is it possible to write a code
that can detect monitor size (like 800x600 or 1024x768) and load
index.html that is right for the particular monitor the user is
    using. ?
Thanks for any infor/help on this.

open flash help, select ActionScript section and type in
    "screen resolution".
There are only 3 topics, all related to your question.
In the future, please try to check available documentation

It's counter productive for us retype what you already have

  • Html5 and css3 your thoughts please!

    Hi everyone
As it is July the 4th, I though I would ask a question that is nothing to do with dreamweaver or coding problems.
Two years ago I posted this thread - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/457240, on the subject of html5/css3, and most people thought that it was too early to adopt these technologies except for 'early adoption' trial sites.
So what does everyone think now that two years have passed?
Are these still considered too new?
Are you using html5 and/or css3 in your web sites?
Is 'progressive enhancement' and/or 'graceful degradation' now a part of your design/coding strategy when using them?
Is anyone using or experimenting with any of the 'newer' features such as the css3 flex-box model or in-line svg?
Is IE6/7 still part of your 'it must look the same in all browsers' design philosophy, or are you now ignoring these browsers?
Your thoughts and opinions, (not insults please) would be welcome, and if you wish to pose a question on how to use any of these the please do so in a separate thread. Also if anything is stopping you using html5/css3, then say what it is.
There is no correct answer but, (5) points will be awarded for the 2 best discussions, because if someone takes time and thought in posting a reply, then some sort of reward should be available, (I did consider a bottle of wine but).

    In my opinion yes.
Are you using html5 and/or css3 in your web sites?
Not yet but I have been looking at some basics of both in preparation to move across once I feel the time is right - 2015 I'll be retired.
Is 'progressive enhancement' and/or 'graceful degradation' now a part of your design/coding strategy when using them?
Nooooooooo! If corners are supposed to be round then square ones is'nt graceful gradation to me.
Is anyone using or experimenting with any of the 'newer' features such as the css3 flex-box model or in-line svg?
    Nope....never heard of them.

IE 7 definitely but I don't design to take into consideration IE 6 any longer.
I'am  right! I'm right! Follow the leader or maybe not

  • DW CS4 - Your thoughts!

Hi, I currently own DW CS3 but find it not very user friendly. I am looking at DW CS4 but I was wondering if it is any more like Golive than DW CS3 or if it makes designing websites any more intuitive. Also is it easier to create CSS in DW CS4?
Those of you who have made the transition from DW CS3 to DW CS4 tell me your thoughts fro the perspective of a GL user.
    Thanks!

DWCS4 is better UI-wise than DWCS3 is. I've used GL since version 1 pre-adobe and still do, stick to GCS2, as I've not had the proper time to migrate sites and am waiting for MenuMachine in its next version.
DW still (talking about CS4) has a long way to go before it comes to par with GoLive when it comes to smart objects (only have them for Photoshop files) and sitemanagement, but apart from that it is quite OK.
As always when switching applications there is a threshold of learning and getting used to before becoming comfortable in the new application, but the basics of DW and GL are not all that different. it is all html and css under the hood no matter hwo you look at them. Personally I am waiting for MenuMachine before doing the migration. But I am more ready to do it with CS4 than I was with CS3.
    Go here
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/golive_migration/content/using_gmk_extension.html
for how to make the jump with Dwcs4.

  • Why does my Wallpaper JPG (created CS5) pixels on 1 monitor and not another? Artwork is 600dpi, rgb, jpg, 30" x 16.5" size, 16:9 ratio. Does monitor resolution matter?

    OS 10.6.8, my monitor resolution = 2560 x 1440.

Don't worry about inches or ppi. Only worry about pixels when designing for a monitor. You will be much happier with the results.
    inches x ppi = pixels
    30 x 600 = 18000 pixels
    16 x 600= 9600 pixels
Printing as you can see is another matter, it requires a much higher resolution. Usually around 300ppi but I think you can see the difference.
Find the highest resolution of the two monitors and design for it. Then reduce for the other monitor never the other way around. It is much easier to remove pixels than to add them.

  • HOW TO RESIZE MONITOR RESOLUTION

Can anyone tell me if i distribute a cd with a projector on
it, is it possible to resize the monitor resolution to 800*600
automatically? and when the projector is closed can i have it
return the monitor back to the owners previous settings??? Or
should i just have a note with disc saying 'best viewed at 800*600.
If it possible to do this in Director Mx can anybody tell me
    how?

    > if i set the projector full screen (800*600), how about
    those computer with different resolution.
Fullscreen means your projector will play at whatever stage
    size you
have set. The border around the stage will be at the size of
    the monitor
resolution (effectively filling the screen - hence the name)
    and with
the color of your stage background. Try it and see.
