Monitor resolution not picked up

I have a new 13" Macbook Pro with a Dell U2713HM 27 INCH WIDE LED 2560 X 1440 VGA DVI HDMI Monitor.
I went to apple store and was told the best cable to connect up with to get the 2560 X 1440 resolution was the Mini DisplayPort to HDTV cable.
I've connected it all up to find the resolution is only displaying at 1920 x 1080 and it wont give me the option to select the correct resolution in the Display list?
Any help would be great :-)

Try a Dual Link DVI cable if your monitor has a Dual Link DVI port.

DVI-I-3 is my second monitor (a regular LCD) which works fine. I think DVI-I-2 is the Catleap. Oddly, the manual says it supports 800x600 but it won't even turn on when X is started. Also it works fine when X isn't started. Whenever I switch to a different TTY my second monitor turns off and the Catleap turns on (albeit at a low resolution).
I've tried adding a new resolution mode with xrandr, but that gives me an error

I've tried various xorg.conf settings and using nvidia-settings, but nothing I do can get it to use a higher resolution or even turn on for that matter. I'm not sure if my dual monitor setup could be screwing with it. I've tried disconnecting my second monitor but that doesn't seem to help.
I found this article, which says that the Catleap's EDID isn't in Linux by default so you can specify it manually. So I set up my xorg.conf.d directory as follows

  • When I close my laptop lid and it goes to sleep so that I can use an external monitor, monitor does not turn on when I hit a key to start laptop

When I use my external monitor, I cannot get it to work after awakening my laptop using any key.  My monitor won't light up although laptop keyboard is backlit showing that it has come out of sleep mode.  Why does the monitor not get the signal from the laptop?

I still cannot figure out why it doesn't always work.  All parameters were met and my bluetooth keyboard is set correctly to wake the computer.  My keyboard becomes backlit, but my LG monitor does not pick up a video signal and is black and my laptop monitor is off.  The only way I can get out is to hold on button on laptop until it shuts down and I can start up again.  This happens on an intermittent basis.  Sometimes it works and other times I get black screens.   I need to know if I can use command F1 to get the laptop to detect the display or is their another key combination to send the signal to the external monitor when I can't see anything because I hate to do a hard shut down to get out of this mode!  Please advise!

I have foud the solution - rather stupid. The system setting for audio input was at 70%, increasing it to 100% solves the problem!

  • Windows 8 on boot camp on MacBook Pro retina w/external monitors = screen resolution not correct

how do i calibrate external monitors resolutions individually in windows 8 (like can be done in OS X) so that my MacBook Pro retina text isn't teeny tiny and my external monitors look normal? Is there a way to set the resolution and text size for each monitor separate from one another in Windows 8? Thanks for the help.

In Windows 8 use the help menu and search for external display.

  • Why does my Wallpaper JPG (created CS5) pixels on 1 monitor and not another? Artwork is 600dpi, rgb, jpg, 30" x 16.5" size, 16:9 ratio. Does monitor resolution matter?

    OS 10.6.8, my monitor resolution = 2560 x 1440.

Don't worry about inches or ppi. Only worry about pixels when designing for a monitor. You will be much happier with the results.
    inches x ppi = pixels
    30 x 600 = 18000 pixels
    16 x 600= 9600 pixels
Printing as you can see is another matter, it requires a much higher resolution. Usually around 300ppi but I think you can see the difference.
Find the highest resolution of the two monitors and design for it. Then reduce for the other monitor never the other way around. It is much easier to remove pixels than to add them.

  • External monitor is not working correctly

I recently bought an external monitor and just hooked it up. It worked right the first time, and I had the screens mirrored. I tried to change the screen resolution and it went wack. It will not pick up a steady signal on the external monitor or the macbook pro when connected. I do not regain signal to my macbook pro until I either unplug the external monitor or turn it off it works on my roommates macbook pro. I can't even change the resolution to get it back to how it was originally because the computer freezes up.
Any help on what to do to fix this?

    Hi Mike,
resetting the PRAM should return the resolution to its original settings (boot up the computer while holding down the "command", "option", "P" & "R" keys. Keep them held down until the startup chime has sounded at least twice.)
If this doesn't resolve it try resetting the SMC - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Functioning Monitor will not display with Mac Mini

I'm trying to get an IBM E74 CRT monitor working with an early 2009 Mac Mini. I have it connected with Apple's mini-DVI to VGA adapater. The Mac "sees" the monitor since with screen sharing I can see the Display System Preference when the monitor is attached. It shows the monitor as an IBM E74 and allows what appear to be appropriate choices as far as resolution and refresh rate are concerned. I tried many combinations of resolution and refresh rate with no difference in behavior.
The monitor always acts like no signal is detected (built it message on monitor display). This monitor works fine with a B&W G3 and a late 2007 MacBook Pro. Any ideas why the Mac Mini is not driving the monitor? Have tried all combinations cycling power on the monitor, connecting / disconnecting while the Mac Mini is power up. Have had the monitor connected and powered on when booting the Mac Mini. For whatever reason the monitor does not seem to work with the Mac Mini, but works fine with other computers.
The monitor despite its' age has pretty low time on it and is quite serviceable. Are there quirks with the VGA interface that we may be running into? I would like to get this combo working together if at all possible.

I would say the VGA interface did evolve somewhat over that time period. In particular, the thing that may have changed that could be the underlying cause of the problem is sync termination impedance has trended upwards. It's not unusual to find older monitors with low impedance on sync. Some even had 75 ohm impedance, which required a line driver for sync the same as for video.
It could be the IBM monitor has fairly low termination impedance and the mini is unable to provide sufficient output on the sync lines to drive TTL levels, whereas the MBP is doing better. You could check this with a simple ohm meter with the IBM monitor turned off. Ideally, for the mini, you would want to see a high impedance reading on H and V sync, like close to 2k ohms. If it's 500 ohms or less, then the mini may not be able to drive sync properly.
On an old monitor like that, it is likely to have old fashioned components with axial leads rather than surface mount components. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could find the offending resistors and bring the monitor up to a more modern, high impedance standard of 1.8k to 2.2k.

  • LCD native resolution not available in system preferences

I need to set my resolution to 1680 x 1050 and that resolution is not vailable. I have a original G4 Mac Mini with Tiger. The monitor has dual inputs for both VGA and DVI, sometimes it will work with the VGA input but not consistantly.
I need to use the DVI input now to leave the VGA input free for my KVM.
I have tried Zapping my PRAM multiple times, starting the Mini with the monitor unplugged, swapping between the DVI and VGA inputs on the LCD monitor, and swapping between my old CT monitor and the new LCD. None of this works.
The LCD always detects as "LCD Display".
I have been unable to find information on where the monitor resolutions are stored, one thing which I would have liked to try would be manually editing the file to the correct resolution.
    What else can I try?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi Brian, sorry about your issue- it's frustrating isn't it? The file you need to edit is in system > library > frameworks > IOKit.frameworks > Versions > A > Resources, and it's called IOGraphicsProperties.plist. If you activate the root user temporarily using the NetInfo Manager, you can edit the file with textedit, save it to the desktop, then drag it into the Resources folder to replace. When you look in the file, you'll see the following:
    <key>gtf-resolutions</key>

I had the same problem as you. I bought an Acer 22" widescreen, with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, which wasn't "available" in the displays control panel. After some swearing and lamenting the olden days in OS9 when you could just willy nilly see all the resolutions, i added my resolution the this file and it showed up in the control panel. You'll have to monkey with it to see how it works, but basically you're going to add another 'integer' line, like so:
    <integer>1680</integer>
If this is too hairy for you, or just too much trouble, i highly recommend SwitchRes. It works perfectly for this problem, and you can input the specifications for your monitor exactly and it will install the resolution so that it's available to the system. Its cheap too.
    good luck to you!

My Mac Mini has stopped being able to detect the resolution of my monitor, which is a 1680x1050 Acer widescreen.  1680x1050 is also no longer a choice of resolutions under 'Displays' in 'System Preferences' so I cannot select my monitor resolution manually.  I suspect that there is a bug somewhere in a recent update which has broken support for my monitor.  Is there an official channel by which I can report this bug?  Has it been reported already?  Is there an ETA on a fix?  This renders my Mac more or less unusable.

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.
    1. Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller
    2. Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    3. Clean it, for example with a > Memorex OptiDisc CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner

  • T520: Monitor does not turn on after boot or waking from sleep

I have a pretty standard T520, the only modifications are upgrading to a larger battery and higher screen resolution (1600x1200), and am currently running windows 7 64bit.  Whenever I turn on the machine from a powered off state, or if I try and wake it up from being asleep, 2/3 of the time the monitor will fail to turn on.  I am only able to remedy this by closing the lid, letting it go to sleep again, opening it again, holding down the fn key (if that even helps), and hoping it turns on the next time.  On a fresh boot, the screen backlight is on, but there is never anything displayed on the monitor, so I cannot even go in to the BIOS.  To get to the BIOS, I have to boot normally, repeatedly open/close the monitor until it displays something, reboot, and hope the monitor is still working after the reboot.
The forum posts I have seen on this topic seem to only relate to this problem with external monitors; however, this is occuring with the laptop monitor itself.
Has anyone else had this issue, or know of ways to correct it?

One other note: I am not hearing the hard drive start spinning on the times that the monitor does not turn on when returning from hibernate.  When the monitor does turn on, there is the distinct sound of the hard drive starting up, and I can feel a bit of torque within the laptop from the hdd.

  • Est. external monitor resolution

I am trying to set up a samsung syncmaster 191Tplus as an external monitor on my macbook from early 2008 running 10.6.8. When I plug it in, both screens flash (not just a flicker) as shown in this youtube video posted by someone else, but my problem is the same

I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The resolution of the samsung is 1280x1024, which is not listed in my choice of display resolutions. Is this the cause? What can I do? I can't access settings to change anything after the monitor is connected, and I can't find settings for the external monitor before it is connected. Would using SwitchResX work to create a monitor resolution preset before plugging in the second monitor?

OK, here is something to try. Go into System Preferences and select Displays. In the window that opens will be a checkbox for "Show displays in menu bar." Put a checkmark there and make it active. There should now be a little icon of an Apple display on the right side of the menu bar at the top of the screen. If you click on it, it will drop down and give you a short cut to different resolutions. There should be a checkmark next to the currently active resolution. Is it set to 1440 x 900? If not, set it there.
If you are still getting that message from the monitor, well, I don't think the Mac is lying about sending 1440 x 900. If the screen doesn't look right to you, try using the Auto Adjustment feature on your Viewsonic monitor. It could just be that the image needs adjusting.
