Monitor Settings - Aspect Ratio

I just bought one of your computer monitors from Best Buys in Mooresville, North Carolina [#1133] with a four year extended warrantee. I bought the Lenovo - L2262 unit with the 21.5 inch screen. Monitor LI P/N: 0A46982. I paid $174.43.
Here's my problem:
I work with AutoCAD and I need my screen aspect ratio to be 1 to 1. It is shipped with an elongated aspect ratio and I don't like that. When I draw a square with my AutoCAD, I want it to be a square and not a rectangle. There must be somewhere in the settings of the program where I can reset the aspect ratio to 1 on 1 for my purposes.

How is the display in other applications including Windows? Does everything appear in correct proportion?
Have you been using the system with another display previous to your move to the L2262, and noted the squares were ... square as expected prior to switching displays? What system are you using to drive the display?
What display resolution are you running? Perhaps a non-native resolution might be selected?
I don't know autocad, and I'm sure you know your way around it pretty well. That said, does autocad have a setting to lock aspect ratios? I found some citations in their online user guide for the 2010 version here, but these seem to relate to rendering rather than creating basic shapes.
Anything else you can tell us about the configuration and your use prior to adding this display may help draw additional suggestions from the community.

Monitor window aspect ratio

How do you set the aspect ratio of the monitor window? Sometimes a 16:9 still image will full the monitor window, and sometimes it will be letterboxed inside a 4:3 monitor window. How do you control this?

For just the Program Monitor, setting that to Fit, will be correct - however, your Project Preset MUST match you Source Footage. Are you mixing Source Footage, or mis-matching the Project's Settings to your Source Footage?

Acer Monitor X193W aspect ratio

I just connected our monitor to our new desktop PC running Windows XP Pro. I've loaded CorelDraw 12. However, when working in CorelDraw 12, the page indicated in the Corel workspace looks square as opposed to a vertical retangle proportional to a sheet of paper. It's ratio is not correct. What must I do to correct this?
Also, when we are just at the Windows Desktop, the bottom bar text is a lot smaller...

My initial suspicion was that your cable wasn't capable of supporting the resolution you were attempting to run. It sounds as though that isn't the problem, though.
I just noticed something else in your initial post that might be a clue. Could you say some more about this phrase: "the bottom bar text is a lot smaller." Smaller than what? Does the "bottom bar"refer to the task bar to which one minimizes windows? Could you give a bit more description?

Matching aspect ratio on external monitor

Hi - I am using illustrator cs4 on windows running on a macbook. when I use an external monitor, the aspect ratio is different and the printout is stretched. Is there a way I can take care of this problem?

Go to your System Preferences and check out the setting you have for your Monitor see if you have a stretched profile selected it will say stretched.
It might be trying to match your NoteBook profile. Chnage it to a normal setting if it has a stretched or wide screen profile.

Aspect ratio: Auto vs. Auto orientation

What is the difference between the settings "Aspect ratio = auto" and "Auto orientation = true"?

The aspect ratio setting of portrait, landscape, or auto, controls what orientation the app opens up in. Most times you would choose portrait or landscape, but in doing so you’re saying that the app only uses that ratio. If you have an app that is both portrait and landscape, then auto might make sense. You would also want to include all of the possible splash screens, not just the portrait or landscape ones.
Auto orient controls whether the app will rotate around when the user turns the device 90 or 180 degrees. For iOS apps you would most likely want that to be on, because it’s a requirement for the iTunes store. But, as an alternative you can have it set to be off, then change that at runtime to be on at the right times. One example use case would be if part of the game play involves using the accelerometer, you wouldn’t want the screen to rotate on the user while playing that part of the game.

Changed sequence settings to match source footage but only half footage now matches even though they're from the same camera and same aspect ratio

My source footage is 1920 X 1080 from a canon 60D. I changed my sequence settings to Digital SLR 1920 X 1080 to match. On the program window I have it set at "Fit". Only about a quarter of my footage now fits the program screen and looks to be the matching aspect ratio. The rest of the footage when on "fit" fills a tiny portion of the viewing window so it appears they don't match the sequence settings. I don't understand why this is happening because this footage is from the same camera, shot the same day, and have the same aspect ratios.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it??

First of all, the setting that you mention is on Fit is the Zoom Level of the Program Monitor. It controls only how the sequence is shown in that monitor; it has nothing to do with how any sources are handled in the sequence.
Please provide the following information:
Exact version of Premiere Pro
Exact version of operating system
Graphics card and driver
Also, please post a screenshot showing the following
Project panel with the Video Info column visible
the Timeline visible
one of the problematic clips selected and the Effect Controls panel visible, with the Motion section twirled open.

External Monitor Aspect Ratio Looks Wrong

I'm having trouble using my TV as another monitor with my new MacBook Pro. I don't really care whether it is mirrored or as a second monitor, but no matter what I do I can't get the aspect ratios right. I want to play videos on my TV, but when I put them fullscreen there, no matter what aspect ratio I've chosen, it ends up cropping the screen, as if instead of actually changing the aspect ratio, it has just blown up the screen from the wrong aspect ratio and let the edges get cut off. The (oldish) TV has a 1024x768 ratio, my laptop a 1280x800. They're connected by VGA cable. When I just leave them like that as separate monitors, the TV acts as if it's the same size as the computer and ends up cutting off the bottom and left side of the window. I've tried setting my laptop to 1024x768 as well as having them as separate monitors, and that changes the laptop screen, but still when I fullscreen a video it's cropped instead of resized, now on both laptop and TV. When I mirror them my laptop gets all stretched looking, presumably because it's taking on the TV's aspect ratio and then just stretching it out. It's like the only way it knows how to handle anything properly is if it's in its native 1280x800 setting. My old PC handles this without a problem (I think it ends up putting black bars top and bottom on my TV to make the ratio work for videos that aren't fullscreen, and in any case it doesn't do any of the weird cropping), and I thought Macs were for graphics people!

First of all the graphic driver is necessary and important to run and to use the graphic card with full performance and NOT the external monitor!!!
I'm sure that the external monitor software was not designed to run the graphic card but to enable and to control some external monitor options.
Anyway, you could try to install this delivered software but please understand that this software will not replace the installed Toshiba nVidia graphic driver.

Monitor: in CS2 how do I handle 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio change?

Hi, my first post here, so please be kind.
I have used Photoshop 9 successfully for several years using a conventional 4:3 aspect ratio CRT monitor. I have just upgraded to a flat screen monitor which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
I resized the Photoshop window to fill the new screen but transferring photographs from Adobe Bridge they were stretched horizontally.
This is the first time I have ever changed the format of my monitor and feel that somewhere in Photoshop there must be a feature which accommodates such a change; though I have spent serious time looking.
I can get the image to display properly by changing the Pixel aspect ratio, but I am certain that would result in saving a distorted image.
Please what do I need to do?

You're in luck, there's a pretty easy solution for this:
You must change your Windows desktop resolution to exactly match the "native" resolution of the new monitor, which is 1920 x 1080 in this case.
Usually you will be offered that choice automatically, but in some cases you'll need to "install" from a CD or downloaded information about the monitor.
There may also be some on-monitor controls you'll need to review to ensure it's showing the full 1920 pixels in width.
What version of Windows are you running, and what model of monitor is it, specifically?

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened. I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.

Cannot get 16 X 9 aspect ratio on NTSC monitor

Just installed a Radeon 9800 pro Mac edition to replace the original GeForce 5200 that came with the computer. The new card is great and gives 30 fps on the main LaCie electron blue 19" monitor when "Full screen" mode is selected. Problem is ... when I select "External video" regardless of the option selected under "Preferences" in "Output" the framerate drops to 6 or 7 fps. The image on the Sony PVM monitor always shows in a stretched 4 X 3 aspect ratio with letterboxing all around it, top, bottom and sides regardless of what option I select in the ATI preferences on the Mac2TV panel. Now when I drag the viewing window from the main monitor to the External Sony PVM monitor and select "Full screen",(external video turned off) the aspect ratio remains in 16 X 9 with an acceptable frame rate.
Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

A solution for "Video output"
When sending an FCP 5.1.1 HDV sequence to "Motion project", it sends it at 1440 x 1080 and Motion 2.1.1 will open a new project to that size. Once that FCP HDV sequence is opened in Motion 2.1.1 and "Full screen mode" is selected it will play to a full screen in 16 x 9 at 30 fps on the "Main Computer Monitor". In this case the main monitor is a LaCie Electron blue 19". Now if "External video" is selected that being a Sony PVM 1351Q the image will show as a 1440 x 1080 and play at only 5 fps. Furthermore it will create a letterbox on all four sides. (looks like a stretched vertical 4 x 3). Now if a new project is opened in Motion 2.1.1 in HD (1920 x1080) and the same HDV QT file is imported in Motion ; the same procedure repeated, the image will play at a proper size and the 16 x 9 aspect ratio on the secondary NTSC Monitor will be respected, mind you it will still play at only 5 fps.
"SOLUTION"
By canceling the "Video output" on Motion, a full frame 16 x 9 image can be viewed on the "Main Monitor". By the way, that image is astonishing compared to what it was with the previous video card. Now by dragging the "Viewer image" above the timeline to the "Secondary Monitor (Sony)" and selecting the "Full Screen Mode" it will then give a proper full screen image with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio on the Sony PVM 1351Q at 30 fps. The image seen on the NTSC monitors when using FCP 5.1.1 in HDV has also improved to a great degree. It has improved to the point where the Radeon® 9800 Pro Mac® Edition 256MB AGP becomes an interesting solution for HDV editing in Final Cut Studio.
If somene has a better solution, I'm all ears! ... or all read!

Aspect Ratio settings -4:3 video doesn't look right on a 16:9 set

Hello- I'm importing old vhs tape via a Canopus 300 into Final Cut Studio then exporting through Quick Time Movie and burning a DVD in iDVD. The problem ocours when I view the DVD on my 16:9 set- video looks to be the wrong size....for example graphics that were within the frame boundaries on the original tape display off the corners of the screen when viewed on the DVD.
Here are my settings:
Final Cut:
Sequence preset - DV NTSC 48 khz
Capture Preset - DV NTSC 48 khz
Device Control - non controllable device
video Playback - Apple firewire ntsc 720x480
audio playback - default
In iDVD I have the project aspect ratio set to 4 : 3
Am I missing something somewhere to preserve the original 4:3 aspect to display properly on 16:9 sets?

Thanks Shane. Tried that on my set, was able to set to normal when viewing off-air picture, but when switching inputs to te dvd player the side bars are gone. Fiddled with the dvd player settings, set it for 4:3 output and I get a letterbox frame but at least the graphics are on screen. Looks like the stretch setting you spoke of.
Regarding Final Cut settings, in capture preset the setting DV NTSC 48 has a default of 3:2 aspect ratio. I see I can edit and change it to NTSC 4:3. Do you think it should be 4:3?

Aspect ratio for old full screen games, advice sought on buying new monitor

Hi.
I'm thinking of buying a ThinkVision LT2252p to replace the old monitor my employer threw out because I've found the old one doesn't offer scaling of the aspect ratio meaning that my golden oldie full-screen-only PC games are all stretched out of shape to fit the entire monitor.
With the LT2252p, will a 1280 × 960 desktop (or a 1024 × 768 fullscreen game...) appear on the monitor with black bars at either side or with a black border all around? (I'm hoping that's what is meant by 'Same Aspect Ratio with input signal'.) Either way is good, just so long as a circle looks like a circle and not an oval.
If it's the case that I'm behind the times and the LT2252p is getting a bit long in the tooth, what would be a suitable alternative for a graphics card with VGA and DVI only?

Literally using Xmonad for the first time and I experienced some game issues with fullscreen. Incorrect aspect ratio of display to monitor ?

I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else; I completed a website
and the client said that she had heard from a friend that her site looked distorted and no others did. She will not give any information as to the person, the machine, browser - anything. I tested the site on IE, Firefox, Safari and Chrome. I tested it on a variety of resolutions, on PCs and Macs. I went to Best Buy and proceeded to test the site on 20 different computers. The only way I could get a distorted view was changing the resoluton to an aspect ratio that was out of line with the monitors aspect ratio. ALL websites looked distorted then, but I am being told that this person reports that only mine is. As there is no way I can verify this finding, I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else. The client won't pay until this is resolved.
The site in question is www.alexandraduran.com. It is pretty straight forward although it has some quirks due to client request (against advice).

art of the problem on this site were some restrictions becuase the client wanted to maintain the site herself and a good
bit of the design editing lent itself to code "I hae me doots" about. The menu fix is a quick one on the style sheet but I am concerned that both of you found errors. The code validated in Dreamweaver CS4,the platform I wrote it in. So ... I couldn't find the errors. I also didn't see any "errors on page" messages while running it live. Where should I be looking ?

Changing monitor resolution with proper aspect ratio

My project size is 800x600 and I wanted to provide an option to the user to change their monitor resolution at 800x600 by clicking on button. I have also planned to do it by using buddy api xtra, and already tested it. The problem is, when I am doing this on a PC with panoramic monitor (native resolution 1920x1080), it got stretched. I know it's very natural (as the aspect ratio has changed ) and I can get it in shape by squeeze the width using 'draw.rect'.
I noticed, there are some PCs with advanced display card that don't even get stretched, but shows the 800x600 resolution in proper aspect ratio by keeping the extra space black both sides. And I don't need to write any further codes (squeeze the width using 'draw.rect') to keep it in shape.
The real problem starts here, I can't able to filter the above situations by any logical means. I wanted to write codes only for the PCs that get stretched, but I didn't able to find any support from Director to determine which type of display card has been attached. I need to know whether it will get stretched, or the display card can able to manage the aspect ratio.
Any one have any solution in this matter?

You don't need an xtra to change the resolutions - but you do have to work a few things - I tend to use flash text because it scales better.

Is there a way to set the aspect ratio or file type in the camera for video settings?

I always convert my .MOV videos to WMV so I can upload to my web site. However, with my new iPhone (iOS7), the vidoes are distorted due to aspect ratio issues. I'd like to set the output aspect ratio and.or file type when I create a new video on my iPhone 5s.

There is no user setting for this in the native iOS app. It is possible that if you use some other 3rd party app you can make some changes to that, but I'm not sure. There are also no settings for changing the file type on the phone itself.
I've not experienced any issues with distortion on mine, but it could be your converter. Have you tried another one?
