Monitor suggestions for Christmas list

I have been using a pair of JBL2600 bookshelf speakers for my monitors. They are OK, but I'd like to get some nice studio monitors in the under $500 range, preferably in the $350-400 range. I am looking for a nice tight bass response. The JBLs I have offer 60Hz - 23kHz. I am told the listed Frequency Response for monitors is not always across the board, so I am now confused. I see the Alesis M1 Active 620 boasts 38Hz - 23.5kHz, but the sales associate assigned to me at Sweetwater suggests the Event ALP 5 which shows 53Hz - 20kHz. I have nowhere locally that I can go and check them out for myself. Can anyone here offer some advice to pander?

I wouldn't pay any attention to specs in this spectrum of the marketplace, as I don't think (given your budget) that you'll get anything that'll deliver real low-ish bass response.
Maybe wait until you could afford some Mackie HR 624 or (even better) HR 824's. Both have great, tight, bass IMO, but I listen and work with rock music, so your mileage may vary, depending on the music you work with.
Within your budget, I have heard KRK Rokits and Wharfedale 5" Diamonds which were nice.
This might help:
http://www.tweakheadz.com/studio_monitors.htm
which contains one of my favorite lines: ...This brings us to Tweak's Law, which says, whatever your monitors are good at is exactly what your mix will be bad at...
Finally, can't you spend some time auditioning monitors somewhere near you with your own material? Monitors are such a personal choice that it's really hard to decide without listening to a bunch of them. If you're located too far from a dealer, at least Sweetwater probably gives you a 30-day return, so you could order 3 or 4 different models and send the least impressive back before you have to pay your credit card bill!

  • Suggestion for Wish List

With the holidays coming up, I usually find it pretty difficult to think of last minute gift items for friends and family.  Itunes should have a way for customer's to share their Itune's Wishlist items with friends and family...Maybe apple or facebook could create an app to link it to facebook.  With the customer's permission of course, the customer can install l the app to their facebook page and then other people can buy them the wishlist items they want for Christmas!  From movies to music, I think it would be a Wonderful way for Apple to increase their revenue stream as well.  The concept is similar to a wedding registry, where if one item is purchased from the wishlist, the other items can still remain open for gift purchases.   You can apply the concept to Birthday's, holidays, parties, etc... I really hope Apple can develop something or has this in the works =)

  • Suggestion for mailing list software.

    Dear members:
I have been looking for a good application for mailing lists. I wish to create a few internet discussion groups and would like to have them set-up as mailing lists with posts distributed to all members in the form of e-mails.
So far the only I've found that seems up-to-date and reasonably powerful is Listserv from L-Soft (www.lsoft.com). This one, however, is rather expensive (really expensive), requires installation to be done using the terminal with Unix commands (which I don't master) and does not offer a Mac GUI (the program is controlled and maintained using a browser).
I am interested in an application that uses the familiar mac interface (GUI) and can be both installed and run using as a typical mac application. Also I would like to find something that is reasonably priced.
Would anyone be able to offer suggestions on what may be a good application for this purpose ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi, Tom.
Please forgive me for the delayed response to your post and thank you for giving me some suggestions.
I looked at the page you referenced on your post and found that the only three list server applications listed don't really offer the features I am looking for.
Letterrip hasn't been developed since early 2006 which means it is quite likely that it would not run properly under the latest version of OS X.
Macjordomo is in the same category of outdated software. The latest version available runs on OS X but the entire interface has that OS 9 classic design as something that hasn't been really updated in a long time. As I tried to run it all it did was to keep crashing. The GUI is also deficient and not you typical Mac application user interface.
Last but not least Mailman seems to be one of the strongest one of the group and I had heard of it before. The only problem I have found is its lack of a Mac front end user interface that follows the typical Mac guidelines. I don't have any type of experience with Unix and would not be able to install any applications that require interaction with the Terminal.
As popular as the Mac is today I find it difficult to believe that there isn't at least one good list server application in the market today. I probably haven't found it yet but I am hoping that one exists so that I can find it.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas or suggestions.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Joseph

  • Affordable Display/Monitor Suggestions for G5?

I'm currently shopping around for an affordable 19" display for my Powermac G5. I would love to own one of the immaculate Apple displays but they're way beyond my budget.
Can you shoot over some suggestions for 19" LCD Flat panel displays that are affordable? ($250 max)
*Is there anything I need to keep in mind "specs-wise" while shopping for a display? Are there compatability factors I need to be aware of since this is for a G5? Any info/tips would greatly be appreciated!
    Thanks much!

  • HD monitor suggestion for use with Mac Mini.

    Hello Group,
Can anyone suggest the best (or good, compatible) HD monitor to use with my new mac mini just purchased (late 2009 model). Can't afford the apple cinema's so I'm looking for a cheaper option to still have HD using HDMI inputs, looking to spend around $200-$300..also do I need to purchase an adapter of some kind?. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Although I have no specifics, from various articles I have read
about the condition, a few things stand out.
What seems the most prevelant and makes a lot of sense is
to use a monitor that has a matte finish screen.  Glossy screens
regardless how you tweek lighting and viewing positions will always
have some amount background reflection.  It can be so low as to
not be conciously perceptible, but the eye is still detecting it and
is trying to correct for it and what is viewed on the screen.
On the subject of lighting, with the wider spread use of CFL
lights could be adding more people to the list with this problem.
The "cycle times" of these can conflict with display refresh times
causing the susceptable persons eyes to get confused.  The old
incandescent bulbs had much less of this effect.
Screen refresh rate can also be an issue.  With the iMacs and
the Thunderbolt displays as well, these are fixed and cannot be
tweeked, atleast not without third party intervention.  With a
Mini and some other third party monitor, adjusting refresh rates
    can help.
Environment in general is a major contributor as well.
So, resolving the issue may not be as simple as just getting
a different monitor, although matte screens seem to be a
    major help.

  • Monitor suggestion for HD 16:9 4:3 NTSC and PAL

Great place you all have. Loads and loads of useful information and the occasional heated argument/disscusion keeps me logged on.
I work in the corporate world and the company is making the logical move from print advertising to broadcast advertising and I convinced the boss that we start shooting everything in HD, even though the projects will probably be down-converted to SD for broadcast. I firmly believe that our moving images archive should contain as much HD as possible because soon everyone will be viewing in HD and I don't want our stuff to standout in a negative way.
Since we will, very soon, be doing nearly everything in-house, I'm getting our post-production editing suite together (along with continuing my FCP education) and I need to a get a production monitor installed. We are an international company so some of our projects will need to be in PAL and the flexability of switching from 4:3 to 16:9 is imparative.
I did some searching and reading, in this section, about what some of you are using as monitors but I didn't catch any mention of HD monitors. The budget is tight (naturally) and 9" will be sufficient with portability being a bonus feature but not a necessity.
If you think I might get more responses in the hardware section of the forum I'll ask there but it seems more applicable here.
    Suggestions?
    Cheers,

  • A suggestion for display list if you type an object in SQL Developer

In Oracle document , we always use low-case in our own table name, column name. So our code format is always followed by this tradition. But now if I use SQL Developer, if I type a table, it will display a list for me.But unfortunitely it is up-case. So I can not pick them up, I have to type the low-case one by myself. Can Oracle consider this tradition ?
    Thx
this is the example from Oracle Doc PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference:
    DECLARE
    bonus NUMBER(8,2);
    emp_id NUMBER(6) := 100;
    BEGIN
SELECT salary * 0.10 INTO bonus FROM employees
    WHERE employee_id = emp_id;
    END;
see salary, employee, empoyee_id are all low-case!

They know.. there have been a few posts about setting case preferences. Hopefully they will add it soon.

  • Replacement suggestion for Notes?

i am using Notational Velocity (just awesome) for long lists of things and Reminders for small tasks with the hope that i will integrate Reminders more into my daily routine with location services and my iphone in some way.
does anyone have a suggestion for small /lists/ of items? i would ideally like to be able to sync with my mac pro (which can only upgrade to Lion) and my iPhone.
any suggestions on something quick and light?
    thanks

The Apple store sells desktop drives of 1TB and 2TB. But they are generally priced like a "convenience store". Store employees are not on commission, but the prices of their drives are so steep (and unjustified) they may be embarrassed to recommend their own drives, and conflicted about recommending Brand X.
There has been a lot of consolidation in the Hard Drive manufacturing business. But there are very few "bad" drives on the market today. Most drives that you buy will work fine.
Personally, I dislike "Green" drives because they spin down by themselves whenever they feel like it, and there may be a delay in accessing your data waiting for the drive to spin up again. That works for backups, but is not OK for your main drives.
A large overall performance boost can be gained from placing only the System, Library, Applications, and hidden unix files on its own drive, and moving User files to a separate drive.
If yours is a MacBook Pro with a single slot for a notebook drive, not a 65lb tower with four drive bays, there are different considerations.

  • I need to create a one-time database for our Christmas list and print labels.  Is there a free Mavericks-compatible download that will do this?

Since I will only use it once a year, I am looking for a free download that will allow me to create a small (80-100 names and addresses) database AND print out mailing labels from that list.  I used to have FileMaker Pro 6 and it worked beautifully.  However, it is not compatible with my new operating system - Mavericks - and I am not willing to spend $180 for the necessary upgrade to FileMaker Pro 12, especially since I will only be using it once a year.  I have Numbers, which works for my other databases, but it is not designed to print labels.  Help!

You could create a Christmas list group in Contacts, and use the File > Print facility in Contacts that supports Avery Mail Labels in the layout tab. Simpler and cheaper than learning a database.

  • External Monitor Suggestions (19"-22") for MacBook (Santa Rosa,GMA X3100)

Man! I am loving this new macbook, working with Logic Studio.
    Any External Monitor Suggestions (19"-22")?
Looking for a reliable monitor at a good price.
    thanks in advance!

I'm using a Samsung 19 inch SyncMaster 940BW digital/analog wide screen monitor. It comes with both a DVI and a VGA cable. I am using it with a Mini DVI to DVI cable and getting a great digital picture out. It also was good price.

  • Where Is The Archive (Link) For "The List" (Weekly Suggested Compilations)

Each week (or so), the iTunes Store has a button link to the current song compilations for certain themes. For example, this week, it is 17 college fight songs. A few weeks ago, I wanted to check out the suggested downloads for popular TV commercial songs. However, the next day I logged onto the iTunes Store, a new listing had already been made, and I am having trouble finding (a link to) the archive for "The List" (if it actually exists, and if not, one should be made). Thanks.

can you send a screen shot? I have my archive folder.

I'm not familiar with your router but are there any buttons on the front or back of it because sometimes you need to pair the router in order for your PC, laptop, phone or iPad to connect wirelessly with it?
From the routers I have used there are normally two buttons on the front or back (apart from the power button), pressing one of them allows you a few minutes to enter the required password on your iPad. Best look at the instructions for the router.
