Monitor went black after changing resolution

I changed my mac mini resolution to something higher. The screen went black and now it never shows anything on it anymore. I turned off the mac and the monitor but still the same problem when I turn the mac back on. How can I get to see the screen again?

Hello Bill,
Welcome again to the Apple Forums.
Most likely you have picked a screen resolution and/or screen signal frequency that is not compatible to drive your monitor.
You have a couple options available to you.
Option 1.
Restart your mini computer and turn off the monitor.
Let the mini computer start up completely.
The mini will detect no monitor is detected and default to a lower resolution and frequency setting.
Turn on your monitor after the mini has completed its start up.
Option 2.
Restart you mini computer and leave the monitor turned on.
Hold down the shift key on the keyboard after you hear the start up tone.
The mini will start up in Safe Boot mode and switch to a lower resolution and frequency setting.
Cheers

  • 2nd monitor went black after upgrading on macbook pro

Ive read post; however, i need help with getting 2nd mointor to work.  it was working fine before upgrade but now jsut black. I was hoping there was a new solution to fix this thuderbolt / 2nd monitor thing.  Im not comutuer tec. guy so I was hoping the apple systems where a good plug and play.
    any help out there??
    thanks

My best guess is that you have fried the RAM with static electricity charged up in your body. According to OGELTHORPE a beep on startup is because of no RAM, if when installing you did not do it correctly, you could have fried the RAM, which then your mac will not recognize it. The same with the old RAM, if you tried to re-install it and didn't pull up your sleeve and rest your arm on the inside of the chassis, then it is fried, or if you didn't wear an ESD band and connect it to the the chassis, then it is fried.
Seen as though you can't startup your mac, I can't say to do an AHT, buy some new ram, and start with the lowest one you can, so its cheap for ya use a different company incase is that;) Crucial.com is really good, I got an 8gb upgrade from 2gb. Let me tell you, it's great!
    Reply back;)

  • 4s screen went black after updating to iOS 8.2

So i updated my iPhone 4s to iOS 8.2 and the screen just went black after that. The phone is on but nothing appears to the screen and booting doesnt help. What should i do?

Try waiting about 30 - 60 minutes to make sure that it isn't just the software being installed. After that, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for 10 - 20 seconds until the apple logo appears.

  • Computer screen went black after trying to adjust settings

Hello, I prior to upgrading to win8, I was using two screens with my b320.  After upgrading I could only use the main screen.  I was trying to adjust the settings to extend the view to the second monitor when...the main monitor b320 went black.  I know it is on in the background.  When I restart the screen flashed Lenovo...the window 8 emblem appears...then nothing, but the sound at startup.  I don't know what to do, since I can't SEE anything..can't adjust anything etc...any advise?

    hi Sassygurl,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Your display might be switched to the Second Screen (external monitor).
    Can you try to:
    1. Press the Windows Key+P and press the Up Arrow 3 times then press Enter (check this thread)
    2. Unplug the external monitor and change the screen source.to PC Screen
    Link to picture
    3. If same problem, try to boot into safe mode by prssing Shift+F8 (might require a few attempts as dicussed here)
    Let me know your findings.
    Cheers

  • Satellite L - LCD monitor flashing black after desktop loads

My LCD monitor has started flashing black at startup. It doesn't do it if I log off and log back in, only on startup. I can log in, the desktop loads and everything looks normal then after about 7 seconds everything goes black, then the taskbar quickly appears then disappears and then the desktop becomes visible again momentarily but goes black again. It repeats this very fast two or three times then starts normally.
Everything seems to be working fine otherwise. I disabled my antivirus so it wouldn't startup but that didn't help. I've done some registry cleaning lately so I restored everything back to well before this started and that didn't help either. I've done a lot of installing and uninstalling of software lately but can't pinpoint anything that might have caused it. This computer is about 2 years old. I have Vista 32 bit, service pack 2.
Anyone ever seen this before or have any ideas what the culprit might be? Really appreciate any advice.

OK, I connected a CRT monitor from another computer and it basically did it too. As the laptop screen was flashing off and on, the CRT screen went black and then came back on when the laptop went back to normal.
I think my graphics card is Intel Display Driver 7.15.10.1502. Does that sound right? I checked for an update through the Device Manager and it said no update is available. The same version is the only one listed at the Toshiba Downloads page. It's included with my Toshiba Application Installer so I'm tempted to uninstall/reinstall, but I'm afraid if it doesn't automatically install at at startup I won't have a monitor. Any advice on this or anything else is appreciated.

  • My monitor went black???

I had to have a new hard drive installed in my G4. When I first started up, I noticed the screen resolution was different than it had been. I went to the monitors settings, and mistakenly clicked on a resolution that evidently was not an allowable one. My NEC Multisync monitor immediately went black. When I try to restart, there is the normal image on the screen during the startup, but just before the moment of truth it goes black again. If I boot from the startup disc, holding "c", I get an image on the screen, but when I boot from the main disc, it goes black. Help!

    Hi, opdrift -
The 'bad' settings that you accidentally entered are in preference files which are being read during the startup sequence. The solution will be to trash those preference files, so that new ones with default settings will be created.
Although you show no specs for your machine, since you have posted in this forum I will assume you are using OS 9.
Boot to your CD (what you refer to as a startup disk). Once the machine is up and ready, go into the System Folder on the hard drive, then into the Preferences folder. Throw away these two files - Display Preferences, and Monitor Preferences (this second one is in a folder by the same name). Empty the Trash.
Then restart normally. On this startup, reset (zap) the PRAM - to do that, immediately on restarting press the Command-Option-P-R keys, keep them held down until you've heard three additional sets of startup chimes. Then release the keys and let startup resume.
This should reset the prefs for the monitor to default settings.

  • My monitor went black while I was using it what do I do

I have a power G4 with a Cinema Display monitor with Cinema Display power adaptor.  I was watching a movie and during the movie the screen went black.  I could hear the movie playing and could adjust the volume.  I power the computer down and tried restarting it and still I have a black screen.  I unplugged the cables and plugged them back up and that didn't help what can I do?  Does anyone know what the problem is?

Assuming that the battery isn't empty (and it can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • My iphone 4 works but the screen went black after it got shot with a paintball. What is wrong with it?

I went paintballing and i forgot i had my iphone in my pocket. I realized I was getting a call and my phone screen didnt work. It didnt crack it just went black. Everythin else works just not that. What is wrong with it?

try holding and pressing the sleep button and home button together for a few seconds and see if there will be any change in the screen and apple logo should appear after 10 seconds or so if not i guess its a problem with the screen itself maybe darkened pixels or maybe a wire is cut off

  • CRT monitor worked until I change resolution

I just got an old G4 power mac with a 17 inch CRT (half grey and half see through blue).
I was messing around with the computer and i changed the resolution and the screen went black. Now the screen is black and making a high pitched periodic noise. I have been looking for a solution (I did a pram reset) with no luck.
When I reboot the computer everything works fine, the startup screen shows but once everything is loaded it get black again.
Thanks in advance for all your help

  • PowerBook went black after attempted disc insertion

I got really scared this morning, because my PowerBook just went black without any possibility to switch it on again. Now, it seems to work again.
This is what happened: I had several apps running, music was playing over my Airport and my computer was plugged into the power net.
I wanted to burn a cd, so I tried to insert one— with no success. For some reason the disc tray wouldn't grab it. I tried several times, but resorted to closing the PowerBook to make it sleep. I woke it up again after a few seconds, hoping to wake up the disc tray as well.
Nothing happened. No hardware sounds, no display, and no 'respiration light' to signify it was still sleeping. It seemed to be switched off. Trying to turn it on did not work for about five minutes.
I checked if nothing was overheated, the battery was alive etc. I tried to switch it on again and BANG, the disk tray made this horrible sound and everything was back to how it was.
Can anyone explain this phenomenon? Because I'm scared it will happen again or that maybe it's a permanent fault.
PS: Posted to wrong topic, can't migrate.

I have been burning cds succesfully again, so it must be a temporary error. I have no clue as to what might have caused it.
What was funny is that switching my machine on worked only after I had turned it upside down. Another post about a malfunctioning disc tray also mentoined this 'trick'.

  • Help! My Mac suddenly went black after re-booting!

    Hello,
I re-booted my Mac and my screen went black. I can hear the computer starting up but nothing is showing up on the monitor. Please help!
    Gladpie

Hi Gladpie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Here's what I'd try...
    iMac G5 SMU reset...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • HP Photosmart 6510 series network printer will not print black after changing cartrage

HP Photosmart 6510 series network printer will not print anything that is black or has black in the picture after changing cartridge, all other colors are working properly after changing. Does not look like any damage to the cartridge or the insert where you plug in the ink. The well where the ink pad and the cartridge meet is damp with black ink. So not sure what is going on

Hello dinger57 and welcome to the HP forums!
I understand since changing the black cartridge the black ink has not been printing. I'm sorry to hear this, but I will definitely do my best to lend a hand
I will suggest that you start with following through this Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages document. If the issue persists after that can you please let me know what country you're in and whether the printer is in or out of warranty? Thanks! Please feel free to private message me the country information.

  • Saving for Web and My Monitor Went Black

I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended (version 10.0.1) running on Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). This morning I was saving a photo as a JPEG for the Web and suddenly my screen went black. There was some flicker and then Photoshop reappeared. I didn't get any warning messages or anything. I'm not sure what caused this so I thought I would post about it here and see what the experts come up with.
My graphics card is an Asus NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO. It has all the latest driver updates. I'm not sure if it was graphics related or not, but I thought I would mention my card. CPU is Intel Core2 Quad Q6600, 4Gigs G.SKILL RAM, Gigabyte P35-DS4 motherboard (Rev. 2.1).

Is that something I should be worried about? Do I need to start looking for a new video card?
There's a little application that will heat up your video card by running it hard and testing it at its limits.  It's called "FurMark".
    http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/
Warning:  You may not WANT to stress your video card this hard, as it can potentially shorten the life of a perfectly good card to run it so hard as to heat it up a lot.  But if any application is going to uncover a latent hardware problem there, this one would be it.

  • A505-S6980 Monitor Went Black

We have a Toshiba A505-S6980. The other night my girlfriend was working on a paper when the screen went black mid typing. She took the battery out and turned the computer back on. Viola the screen worked, then the next night it did the same thing, this time the screen refuses to come on. I am fairly well versed in the hardware aspect of pc's and have torn apart this one to check all possible connections. No luck. Is there anyone who has had this issue or can think of a solution other than use another external screen. We really hate to purchase a new laptop when this one is only about a year old. Please help with idea's.
