Monitor will not wake after entering standby

I have been trying to solve this issue for several months now, it is amazing how common the issue is but yet there is no clear solution to the problem or understand what might be causing the problem.
I have set my computer to put the monitor into standby mode after 15 minutes of inactivity - during which my monitor is still powered on but the PC shuts off the video. To wake it, usually bumping the mouse or pressing any key/button will wake it. I have found recently that sometimes it won't come out of standby. Moving the mouse won't wake it, hitting keys won't wake it, it just remains in standby mode - the PC is still on and running but the display won't wake.
This is very random, most of the time it wakes up, rarely, it just doesn't. I tried to click the num lock button on and off to see if it responds, and most of the time it does, however I think there were a couple of instances it doesn't. I tried to go to bios and select the wakeup event and switch between bios and os, if I select OS, my computer simply doesn't start after the hybrid shutdown of windows 8.1, so I set it back to bios.
My computer is configured not to sleep, but just to turn off display after 15 minutes. I thought the issue was related to AMD cards but apparently it is also with Nvidia cards as well. Any help would be appreciated.
My specs, everything is up to date as of the post, all updates are checked using msi live update software:
MSI Z87-G43 Gaming Motherboard - Bios ver: A.60
Sapphire Tri X R9 290 OC - Catalyst 14.7 RC3
Intel Core i5 4670

Checked the bios from here, http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?architecture=&manufacturer=Sapphire&model=R9+290&interface=&memType=&memSize=
Looks like my Bios is up to date from the list, not sure if there are more updated BIOS elsewhere.

Hi! I am having the same problem. What's odd is that a few days ago- the ipad was connecting to the network fine. No changes made. Other devices can connect to this network. I have also been able to connect my ipad to other networks.
I have reset all network settings, reset my ipad, reset the router, hard stop reboot, turn on/off wifi connection. what's interesting is that when i click the arrow next to the network i am trying to log onto- the ip address, router, and dns numbers come up automatically and the router number does not fill in (also- this process takes a long time- at least 5 minutes).
    any thoughts?

Uggh, it's so frustrating! I've googled every search phrase I can think of and this seems to be the only thread describing this exact issue. I'm always automatically logged into Facebook on my MBP but just to be sure I logged out and back in and it worked fine.
I gotta say, I wasn't a fan of the Droid I had preceding this iPhone, and from what I hear the iPhone app for FB is a thousand times better - not that I'd know personally because I can't log in!! - but I could always access my FB account on the droid. Just sayin...

  • Often will not wake after extended sleep; PowerMac G5 Quad

Why is it that My G5 Quad has repeatedly refused to wake from a sleep?
when i leave it for a night, a few days, sometimes even a few hours, the machine will not wake. keyboard, mouse, all no response. even restart key combos, nothing. I end up doing a cold restart (holding down the power button). i hate doing that.
i've run hardware tests, nothing. Perhaps its a cooling/heating issue?
once, i did the cold restart and it froze up in the moment when the red light blinks and it shuts down. but that time the red light stayed on and the fans were all blaring. I had to pull the power cord out!
it seems to occur when i leave an application running that uses the internet. folding at home, mainly.
anyone know about this? do i have to send 'er in for some fixing?

    If you're in a
very dusty environment, I've seen that cause clogging
of the fans/cooling system - otherwise, suspect RAM
    first as noted.
I think you may be right. i just found the processor box thingy (next to the fans?) was almost 90% caked with dust. i busted out the handy vac and carefully vac'ed it clean. i made sure not to put the vacuum nozzle right up to the box, just skirting it a half-inch above.
    I called applecare just now and went through some steps to remedy the sleeping crashes;
we booted from install dvd, ran disk utility "repair disk" no errors, hardware test said no errors on a recent test. we then booted to open firmware, reset three things rebooted with some key commands, three chimes, booted, unplugged the beast, replugged, rebooted, unpluged, pushed in the little power module button. now it seems even a bit smoother than before!
only thing was that pushing the little power reset button in there is subtle. you can't really feel that you've pushed it! the guy didn't tell me to be careful not to push it more than once until after i'd tried to push it maybe ten times. apparently you just touch it and it's done, but i thought it would pop or click or slide more, but i guess not?
hopefully that will resolve the sleeping crashes, i'll have to wait and see.
if it happens again, i'll take your advice and assume it's the ram. I won't swap them, because i'm a front-end guy. i was so scared to open the box just now, and imagine my peril when i realized i had to vacuum inside there!
If it happens again, I will take it in to an applestore, that way if it breaks i am not gonna get blamed.
    THANK YOU BOTH!

If I have a CUDA application running when I sleep my system, then the system will NOT wake up. This worked fine in 10.6.4.
    Ideas? How do I downgrade?

  • Macbook Pro 8,2 will not wake after suspend

    Hey friends,
I'm having problems with my MBP 8,2 waking after suspending it to ram via pm-suspend.  This is output in pm-suspend.log:
    Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video suspend suspend:
    /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video suspend suspend: success.
Tue Oct 9 09:40:28 PDT 2012: performing suspend
Get video state buffer size failed
Allocated buffer at 0x11000 (base is 0x0)
    ES: 0x1100 EBX: 0x0000
    Save video state failed
    Real mode call failed
    /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions: line 53: 938 Hangup s2ram --force $OPTS
Basically the MBP looks like it is suspending successfully, the light goes to the normal slow blink as it does in OSX, however when you try to wake it reboots.

Edit: Suspend works w/o issue on Ubuntu 12.04
Please let me know what other information I can provide.
    Thanks.

Boot to safe mode, hold the Shift key down (either one will work) at startup. Once and IF it boots to safe mode move, copy to external and delete from internal, files from the hard drive to free up space. Then restart normally.

.... and you fail to mention the model SSD and firmware version... or how you installed or cloned the system
most people also move most of their user folder to another hard drive.
sounds like a more normal Mail + OS issue if just that.
hard restarts = directory corruption so don't reboot w/o first either Recovery Mode, then follow up with Safe Boot.
And maybe you have 3rd party hardware or software that is not compatible with 10.8.2 needs to be considered as well.

I have read your post on how your monitor goes into sleep mode and will not wake up, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To rule out any sleep mode issues with the monitor, I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try a different cable connecting your monitor to your computer
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

    Hello KCC4ME,
You may try booting your Mac in Safe Boot, as it can resolve many issues that may prevent a successful login.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If a Safe Boot allows you to successfully log in, you may have issues with one or more login itmes (while the following article is labelled as a Mavericks article, it is viable for earlier versions of the Mac OS, as well).

  • MacbookPro will not wake up from sleep after memory upgrade

I am restarting this topic as I have read thread after thread (many years old) and they all just die off with out any definite solution.
I have a 13" Mid 2010 Mac book Pro which originally came with 250gb HDD and 4gb memory
I have recently upgraded to a 256 SSD and a 1TB HDD optidrive replacement along with a 8GB memory upgrade and I am now running Lion 10.7.4
If I close the lid and open within approximately 1 minute it will wake up quickly as normal, if I leave it asleep for a minute or 2 it will not wake up with out holding the power button for several seconds and then I still need to wait a several seconds for it to respond and actually wake up. Sometimes I will need to completely shut down and restart. If I wanted a computer that takes forever to wake up I would have a PC!
The last thing I upgraded was the memory so I am sure it is the cause of the sleep problem and not the SSD conversion which was working fine with the original 4GB mem before upgrade.
I have read about resting the PRAM, resetting PMC as well as executing a line in the terminal, but all of these seem to have variable success. I have tried every thing but using the terminal to adjust the hibernate mode setting as I am not proficient with terminal and don't actually understand what changing this setting does (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 7).
Has anyone resolved this sleep problem and what did you do? I would greatly appreciate some knowledgeable insight on the hibernation settings, and what running the line in the terminal is actually doing... even better what is the default so I can change it back if it doesn't resolve the problem.
A simple memory upgrade causing such a issues is very irritating.... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

But still, the sleep issue persists, so it is a more subtle timing issue. I upgraded my MBP with a Corsair 8GB kit ( http://www.corsair.com/us/corsair-mac-memory-8gb-ddr3-sodimm-memory-kit-cmsa8gx3 m2a1333c9.html ) and it indicated it had 9-9-9-24 CAS timing. It has worked flawlessly till now. Note that my Mac is a Late 2011, whose memory runs at 1333 MHz.
As far as I can tell, the 13" Mid 2010 models used 1067 MHz memory with 7-7-7-20 CAS timing: http://www.corsair.com/us/corsair-mac-memory-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-sodimm-memory -kit-cmsa8gx3m2a106c7.html

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
