Monitor won't work via mini-dvi to dvi adapter

It's a brand spanking new mac mini. I attached a 5 year old lcd monitor (always used before as VGA) using the mini-dvi to dvi adapter. I am using the monitor's dvi connector. The monitor resolution is 1280x1024.
The monitor does not work when using the mini-dvi to dvi adapter. If I remove the mini-dvi adapter and use a mini displayport to dvi adapter, it works just fine. I can keep both adapters plugged in and plug the cable into one or the other. It always works instantly when attached to the minidisplay port and doesn't work if I switch to the mini-dvi port.
I've tried the display with mini-dvi adapter on my macbook too. On the laptop, it acts like there are two screens attached, but there is no action on the external display.
As a further test, I attached the mac mini to the TV via a mini-dvi to hdmi adapter. The mini-dvi port on the mini works fine, as does the port on the laptop. The monitor works fine via minidisplay, but not mini-dvi.
Naturally, I concluded that the mini-dvi adapter was faulty. A second adapter came today, and nothing has changed. Could I have received two Apple mini-dvi adapters in a row with problems? Is there something about the monitor that doesn't like the mini-dvi port? It seems like it wouldn't like the minidisplay port either, but that one is fine.

• Went to Best Buy
• Paid for a DYNEX Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter ($25)
• Came home and plugged in the adapter then the HDMI to DVI cable to the monitor. (Note: Monitor is a LG Flatron L22WTG) - DID NOT WORK
• iMac knows monitor is plugged in and I can change the resolution on both monitors and mirror. (Note: Changed to every resolutions with/without mirror image.) - DID NOT WORK
• Restarted computer - DID NOT WORK
• Turned off/on LG monitor many times - DID NOT WORK
• Unplugged/plugged back in many different ways - DID NOT WORK

  • My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter.

My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter. I also tried the HDMI to DVI adapter ane the Mac-Mini with same result. The monitor does work on my older Macbook Pro that has the DVI connector. Is it a Software/Driver issue ?

Should be extremely simple, please carefully read Connect multiple displays to your Mac. If you still have problems then it's probably a cable issue that would be resolved by replacing the adapter cable. You should be using this adapter. If you are using a third party adapter that might be your problem!

  • 2nd Monitor won't work

I bought a Pavillion p6210f last week with Win7 loaded to replace my Dell/Vista.  I was using two monitors with a VGA port and DVI port on the old PC, so I tried plugging in the same on my new HP and the DVI would not fit.  In examining the pins I found that, althought the Manual said DVI, but the plug has the pin/bar arrangement of a DVI-D.   So, I bought a VGAto DVI-D adapter and everything plugged in snuggly.  All pins and bar appear a match.
But, it won't work.  This is what is showing
NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller   HP RC Mirror Driver [Display adapter]
    NVIDIA GeForce 9100 [Display adapter]
    Acer P241W [Monitor] (24.0"vis, s/n LB4040014320, March 2008)the one working monitor....
After hours with the 800 support and hours of reversing the two Acer monitors, the DVI-D port is simply dead.  Anything plugged in to the VGA works fine, anything and any combination plugged into the DVI-D and cable switching etc. the 2nd monitor  is not even recoginized.  The NVIDIA control panel doesn't recognize it. The amber power light just stays that way and nothing ever flashes on the 2nd screen.  That is, it is the same as not plugging in at all.
I was less than pleased when 800 tech and supervisor suggested I take it to a repair center.  A week old?  I have put way too much setup and data transfer into the new HP to go back to the retailer for a replacement.
Techs didn't know, but could there be a DVI-X with the same pins that also fits

Eldric, did you update to the latest video driver from nVidia?  It sounds to me like a driver problem.  Update and let us know if that solves your problem.

  • Thinkpad T420 with Dock 4338 Dual External Monitors won't work

    Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a T420 with Dock Model 4338 and am trying to connect two external monitors.  I want to have my desktop visible on my primary monitor with laptop closed and that desktop extended onto my second external monitors.  Both external monitors are Dell 19", one is being ran through the VGA port on the dock and the other is a VGA cord that I put a VGA to DVI-D adapter on to run off of one of the DVI Ports on the dock.  I can get my desktop to display on the main external monitor, and everything detects the other monitor fine, but the extended monitor remains black.  The screen is on, and recognized as the button light on the monitor is green not yellow and i can scroll my mouse over to that window and i lose the mouse so it's extending just not visible.  I have made sure that both monitors work by checking each individually in the VGA port and they are operational, but the DVI-D port doesn't seem to work on my second monitor.
I have done some pretty extensive searching and can't seem to get this to work.  At my job I have a T430 with the same dock and dual monitor setup that took no time and works great.  Does the T420 just not support this?
    All help is appreciated.
    Thank you all,
    NickG
    Solved!

DVI-D don't support passive dvi to VGA adapter. You are better off with a displayport to VGA adapter, as they are cheaper then a dvi-d to VGA converter.

  • Anyone think of why this monitor won't work?

I have a 2009 mac pro with an ati 1gb card. it has a dvi and two displayports. The dvi monitor has my dell on it, no problems. I had this old vga monitor, got a mini displayport to vga adapter, plugged up, and nothing. The monitor's power flashes as it appears to know it's plugged in, but nothing comes up in sys prefs or even system profiler. The monitor is pretty old i mean, probably around ten years, but it's just a vga. Any ideas? Not that it matters, but it's a mag innovision display.

  • Preview Monitor won't Work

I am using a Blackmagic card and have updated the codecs - I did a chat with Adobe and they remotely controlled my computer and still couldn't get it to work. The monitor works fine with Final Cut but won't work with Premier CC. Help.

Hmmm ...  not sure where to even start, you didn't include enough details really ...
For starters ... OS/version, which CC build you're running, some things like that? Around here this is a puzzle-out space with most of participants being "peers" in being users and not Adobe staff. Some staff post here on their own time, and are a great help. But so are many of the regular joe's and joeleen's who inhabit this space.
Not thrilled that Adobe chat & help folks couldn't find the issue, but we'll see if someone around here will take on the challenge ...

  • Have compaq desk top, trying to hook up HD flat screen monitor, won't work?

Haave Compaq, desk top, trying to hook up, HD, flat screen monitor, won't work

    Hello redheadjennieo,
I'm not sure Apple is going to write drivers for a Windows Operating System, so we may have to rely on the generic drivers.
What model pavilion do you have?
    What operating system?
Does the monitor say anything on the screen when it's connected to the computer and you turn it? (e.g. signal out of range, no input, etc)

  • MacPro1,1 Geforce 7300 - Dual Monitor won't work

    Hi there,
I just bought a MacPro1,1 with 2xDual Xeon 2,66 GHz processors. It comes with the standard setup of HD, Memory and the Geforce 7300 GT graphic card. The Graphic card has two DVI-plugs (DVI-D & DVI-S). So far, so good.
But when I attach two monitors to the DVI-plugs the second monitor gets no signal. If I then attach the second one with a VGA cable and a DVI-to-VGA switch it works (but with a bad quality/resolution).
How can I connect both monitors to the 7300 GT using DVI? Is the card broken or do I have to get bigger graphic card?

I'm running 2 DVI monitors off a 7300 GT in a Mac Pro, so it does work in theory.
    Some ideas:
    Have you tried switching cables?
Have you tried one monitor at a time to each of the DVI ports?
If one DVI port never works with DVI, it's probably a bad card.
Also, I've found that VGA signals are not quite as good as DVI, but if you are really getting poor image quality with VGA, then there is a problem with the card, the monitor, or the cable.

  • Dual monitors won't work independently

Using win 7 ATI Raedon 4200 card. My second monitor displays only the primary desktop back ground. Followed all setup correctly please help

Vnyga, thanks but that's not it. The geek squad said something about my monitor plug ins I told them my computer recognizes the dual setup but won't work independently. He said you can keep tweak it but he has 3 monitors an although they will learn his only remembers about 70% of the time. I'm going to try hooking it up toy TV as a monitor. I just want to use it for security cameras. I do have a DVR I could use but I normally just use that when I'm ghost hunting. I'm actually I union millwright and part time ghost hunter so I'm not to well versed in computers or the talkology but I'm learning. Anyway my laptop w win8 works just fine. But... I truly appreciate I taking the time to respond an at least offer a solution thanks so much an I apologize for running my mouth on an on. Take care V.

  • No audio via Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter

    I have a late 2008 model (MB470LL/A) 15" MacBook Pro running 10.6.7.
I purchased a Dynex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter that's not picking up the audio signal. The video plays  fine via HDMI to our TV, but no audio.
In looking online I've seen this is a known issue. Has anyone discovered a work around other then running a separate audio cable from my computer to the TV?
I'm really surprised there is no audio this way. Someone dropped the ball on this one.

I might be wrong but the MBP 2008 does not have audio supplied capability over MDP to HDMI.

  • Connect Mid-2009 Macbook Pro to HDTV via Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect my Mac to my HDTV via a Mini Displayport to HDMI converter I bought at the Apple Store. I have tried on three different HDTVs, none of which allow me to output video. I have tried adjusting the resolution to every available resolution under system preferences. Any advice as to how to resolve this problem would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Jordan

I'm having the same problem, also with a 2009 13" MBP and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.  Does anyone out there have a solution?  Do we need a different kind of adapter?  My tv is a Samsung 720p.  My boyfriend can connect his PC laptop with an HDMI cable with no issues.

  • External display via Mini DisplayPort to DVI no longer works with MacBook.

I had not used my external monitor in the last several weeks. I believe there have been a few OSX Lion updates since the last time I used the external monitor. I had installed all the updates prior to connecting my external monitor again. However, a few days ago I tried to connect the external monitor and all I get is a "No Signal" message on my external monitor. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI works on my LCD TV, so I know  the MDP works. I have also replaced the MDP-to-DVI cord and the external display still doesn't work.
I connected the external monitor to another computer running Snow Leopard and the external monitor works. So, the external monitor does work.
I have seen a few posts aboout this, but nobody seems to have a solution that works or is directly on point to my issue. I have tried to use all the scenarios for plugging in the external monitor and external monitor power. I tried to reboot the laptop with and withoout the external monitor connected. Same thing with the exteernal monitor plugged in and no power, etc. Nothing works. I have tried to repeatedly turn the external monitor on and off while connected to the MacBook. Again, that doesn't work.
So, I am open to any help someone may have. Here is what I am running:
    MacBook, Aluminum 13" Late 2008
    OSX 10.7.3
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. Lion seems to have problems with external monitors.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
