Monitoring Airport Disk?

I'm looking for a utility that could monitor an airport disk connected to AEBS. I'd like to control connected clients, connexions duration and speed...
Any idea?

My issue was just resolved a few moments ago (hopefully indefinitely) by reverting the AEBS firmware from 7.4.2 to 7.4.1. I referenced to the following thread for assistance just in case others who visit this thread might find it helpful: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2158515
Apparently there are at least four different generations of the AEBS which can play a role in the issues users are experiencing - zero airdisk connectivity, loss of file transfers, hanging (aka forever spinning beach-ball), etc. One excerpt referenced from the above thread link noted by user Catmandog highlighted this point:
"... There are at least 4 generations with some physical hardware differences. Apple have done well not to put model numbers on the units so most folk have no idea what they have, or what the unit can or can't do
To the best of my knowledge:
sim dual band v2 (mc340 model) - only 7.5 is compatible (has 5gigN & USB hard disk problems)
sim dual band v1 model - 7.4.1 (has some USB drive issues), 7.4.2 (lots of USB drive issues)
dual band gigabit - 7.2, 7.2.1, 7.3.1, 7.3.2 (works well with USB drives), 7.4.1 (has some USB drive issues), 7.4.2 (lots of USB drive issues)
older airport extreme units - Can't help you there sorry
Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of the above
Cheers

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.
Additional Info that might be helpful:
-AirPort Extreme 340ll/a, Version 7.5(I assume that's the firmware version).
-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!

  • Can see but not browse to Airport disk, also cannot print in Bonjour

I suspect this may be related to a firewall issue or perhaps the way my corporate PC is set up (logged into Domain with VPN to Internet. What else might cause:

nability to print, Bonjour or otherwise tothe USB attached printer in Airport. Macs work just fine

  • How do I set up Airport Extreme Airport Disk as Central Media Storage when I have Directv, Windows and Mac needing access?

I have an always on PC in my living room, but I want the macbook pro to have the same media without taking up the space.  iTunes Shared lacks the sorting features of having the library directly associated.  What I want to do is setup a hard drive on my AEBS to house all my media.
I have a 120GB SSD on my PC in the LR. (with an 80GB drive I may put with it for extra space if needed)
    A 250GB MBP
    A 2TB drive (installed in a USB/eSATA enclosure)
    A 1TB drive
    A 500GB usb WD Passport
I use iTunes for Movies, Music, Podcasts
    I use Picasa for Pictures
I want to house these large libraries on the AEBS Airport Disk and have the MBP and PC access the media.  I ideally want iTunes to identify that as the iTunes Media Library for both the MBP and PC.  I haven't found a good run down of how this would work.  Especially since I want to make sure Directv can access the media as well as the PC and MBP.
I will store all my media on the 2TB, I will use the 1TB to backup all the media in a safe, and the 500GB I want to split for Time Machine and Windows backup.  With all my media off those drives, 500GB should be enough space to keep backups for a while to restore programs and what not from.
    Thanks for any help.

You may want to revisit your strategy to using an AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups and that is because Apple does not support this. If your backups are critical to you, then I would strongly recommend that you reconsider using another destination source option.

This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.

Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

  • Error while connecting to the AirPort Disk on Windows

    good morning to everyone.
i am sure this question has been done several times, but i am italian and don't know the correct translation of the message i receive when i try to connect to my airport and so i cannot find the post concerning.
i have a 500Gb airport disk. i have both ethernet and usb cables connected.
    airport options have been set:
    enable share documents
    shared disks with password
    guest with WRITE/READ permissions
    disks shared via WAN
workgroup name WORKGROUP, set as the same in windows control panel.
    THOUGH
when i start the pc or try to access the "Time Capsule of Lyllo" it keeps me asking the password AND if i use the password i have set in the AirPOrt Utility, it gives me an error:
user not recognized, login not available.
(forgive me, but i do not knwo the english translation of this warning message)
    can you help me?
i am trying to connect the airport since days but if i succeded once for few days, now i cannot connect anymore
    thank you.

    i have the same issue.
Was working fine a few days ago and now I can't access the airport configuration through the windows utility.
Had version 5.4.1 installed, then tried 5.4.2
    Still no go

  • Can no longer sync Photos from Airport Disk

I can no longer sync photos from my Airport Disk to my tv.
This used to work fine- When I first got the tv I checked the "sync photos from" option in the photos tab in iTunes, navigated to my network drive/ pictures folder and hit sync. The photos slowly copied over.
Just this week however, I went to add some new pictures and iTunes/ tv no longer sync. The status bar just spins saying "Syncing"...I have left it overnight with no change.
I have recently updated to the latest version of iTunes and Airport Extreme firmware, but that is about it in terms of changes/updates. Anyone have any ideas?
    - Firewall is off
    - Permissions seem ok on the Airpot Disk. Everything is read/write
    - I have rebooted/ reset/ re-synced everything. It just hangs on Photos. Music etc go over fine.
    Specs:
    iMac G5 PowerPC
Airport Extreme N base station with OWC USB drive attached as airDisk
tv 1.0 40 gig - using ethernet connection to router
    iTunes 7.4.2
I am really stumped! I think that the airport disk permissions or mount are still suspect but dont know what else to check.
Does iTunes spit out a log or write to the console? Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    AC

I think I have figured it out, and photos are syncing now.
Here is what I believe happened: There is an iTunes generated folder called "iPod Photo Cache" in my "Pictures" folder on my Airpot Disk. This folder gets generated by iTunes whenever you designate a location for syncing. The "iPod Photo Cache" folder contains a file called "Photo Database".
It looks like the "Photo Database" had been corrupted. Deleting this file, or alternatively, moving my pictures to a new folder and letting iTunes regenerate the Photo Database fixed the problem.

  • PC no longer sees Airport Disks

I have a new Time Capsule. The HD in my previous one failed.
Everything is fine with my Mac but my PC can't see the USB disks.
After I set up the new Time Capsule the PC Airport Utility immediately updated.
It saw my Time Capsule and asked for my AirPort password and then I see the "unknown user" error.
The Airport Utility is set up for file sharing with AirPort Disks Guest access.

  • Airport Disk access from the internet via Windows Vista

I have an Air Port Extreme base station and am sharing an external hard disk connected to it by the USB port. Local network connections work well with both mac's and windows machines. I am able to connect to the airport disk from the internet with my mac's fine. afp://ip address. How can I connect to this same air port disk from the internet with my PC's which run Vista? There must be a way? I have tried endlessly for many hours. any help would be appreciated.

This works fine from local network, but not from a remote location from the internet. Maybe my syntax is incorrect. My workgroup name in the Airport Utility is "Apple"
Connected locally "\\APPLE1\My Book 500GB" works and makes a connection from the map network drive windows pane. \\Apple1\my book 500gb also connects if entered from IE, again locally. What would be the correct syntax to access it from the web?
From my mac on the web afp://"ip address/ Works!!
Syntax I've tried from remote or internet: smb://??.204.218.??/apple ,smb://??.204.218.??/apple1 ,
smb://??.204.218.??/my book 500gb. IP address used is my external ip address.
    I'm still missing something??

  • Airport disk not visible in windows (XP)

I have 3 computes 2x imac + one PC under Windows XP
I use time capsule (7.4.2) for the network + file sharing.
    Almost everything works ok.
Only issue is that I do not have airport disk access from the PC/Windows.
On the PC I have Airport Utility 5.4.2, when I open airport disk preference, it seems I see the airport name but when I try to connect to it/identify myself (connect as user) with the proper user id & password (as I have setup on the time capsule) I get the following message: "unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retipe etc".
Any idea what it could be?

Hi nathalie&michael, i'm having the same problem. not only does it fail to connect as a user, also the guest connection returns the same error message. i have also tried manually mapping thee drive and this returns 'path not found' errors.

  • Connect to airport disk when through internet

    Hello,
I have a mac book running 10.6.8  At home I have an apple "airport extreme" router with a WD external hard drive connected via USB, the disk works fine at home.   I know it is possible to connect to the external hard drive(airport disk)   via the internet when I'm not at home.  But I can't seem to find any guidance to my situation.  I also have a mobileme account and I thought I should be able to do it with "back to my mac"  but I can't get either method to work.
Any help, advice or links would be appreciated!!

You have at least two routes to be able to access the AirPort Disk from the Internet: 1) Back to My Mac (BTMM) / MobileMe (easiest), or 2) Configure the AirPort for Port Mapping.
I suggest trying the BTMM method first.
As you already know BTMM is tied to an individual's MobileMe account.
Let's go over your BTMM setup, just to make sure something wasn't missed.
    BTMM - General Requirements
    OS X Leopard 10.5.4+
Active MobileMe account. Each Mac & the AirPort router, that will be relying on BTMM, needs to be configured with the same account.
A publicly reachable IP address for your AirPort router.
A router that supports either NAT-PMP or UPnP. Note: All AirPorts supports NAT-PMP.
    BTMM - Basic Communication Flow
For a computer connected to the Internet via a router, BTMM "asks" the router for its configuration information. For a router, like your AirPort, that uses NAT-PMP, BTMM will ask the router to assign arbitrary public ports. In turn, the router will provide these port assignments (& the router's Public IP address) back to BTMM.
BTMM then sends this information to the MobileMe account. In background MobileMe updates a special set of DNS entries to be used by BTMM. These entries are then made available to all BTMM clients using your MobileMe account. When a computer, with BTMM enabled, uses your MobileMe credentials, it automatically retrieves a list of all other computers/routers that are registered with the same account. All these devices should then appear under the SHARED section of the Finder.
When attempting to connect to a remote computer (or router), BTMM creates a secure connection to that remote device using the information from the MobleMe account.
Once the connection is established, the devices can then communicate with each other.
For a router, the key is that if the ISP doesn't offer you a publicly reachable IP address then BTMM won't work. You will then have to look for an alternative solution, like BackToMyPC or LogmeIn.
    On both routers (Apple Only)
Using the AirPort Utility, verify the following:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Internet > NAT
Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol (enabled)
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Advanced > MobileMe
Click the plus button to add your MobileMe account information. Any HDDs attached to the AirPort (or both the Time Capsule's internal HDD and attached USB HDD) will now appear in the SHARED section of the Finder on BTMM-enabled computers using the same MobileMe account.

  • Backing up with Time Machine via "Personal File Sharing" and Airport Disk

I've been using Time Machine on my own Mac at home and want to use it to backup other Macs in my house as well. Right now I'm just backing up over FireWire, but plugging my disk into each of the other Macs one at a time doesn't seem to make much sense.
Besides going out and buying a Time Capsule, Leopard Server, or Xsan, what are my options for backing up multiple Macs to one disk? I've read that using an Airport disk is somewhat risky because of some "premature file transfer confirmation." Has anyone ever used Time Machine w/ Airport Disk and had problems?
I've also noticed that you can back up to shared drives, like if I share my current FireWire disk so people can back up to it, but wouldn't that require for people to connect to the host Mac manually via Finder? And wouldn't that in turn defeat the purpose of automatic scheduled backups?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

the only supported option besides Time Capsule is to back up to a hard drive directly connected to a mac running leopard on the same local network. as you mention it would indeed require that this drive be mounted first. you can automate mounting this drive on login and simply keep it mounted at all times. to do that mount the drive of the host Mac on a remote mac and while it's mounted there add it to the login items in system preferences->accounts.
You can also use drives directly attached to an airport extreme base station. that works in the same way as backups to a Time capsule.

  • 10.5.1 and Airport disks

Airport disk under 10.5 was flaky at best. Now under 10.5.1 I can't open the disk attached to my AEBS at all. I can see the disk but clicking on it fails to open it.
I've rebooted everything. I reset the AirPort base station. I've turned the firewall off. File sharing on, off. It did work under 10.5 with an occasional dropout. And under 10.4 it "Just Works"

Same problem at my end. No problems at all with 10.4. But since 10.5 and 10.5.1 sometimes I see the disks, sometimes I can open one. But most of the times after opening, I loose connection with all of them. They do not show on the desktop either, only in finder. This is very annoying and I am considering to go back to 10.4. I am lucky, my MacBook Pro is 1,5 weeks old. I have both 10.4 and a Leopard upgrade disk to work with . However going back will be a lot of work. And Leopard should work as a minimum with Apple products would be my standpoint. And that is all I am using.
I am really curious when a solution will come. This seems a very systemic issue looking at all the discussions around this topic.

  • ITunes Library on an Airport Disk?  Read and write from multiple Macs?

OK, I've scoured the forums for an answer to this, but haven't found anything definitive. Apologies if I've missed the answer, but here's what I want to know:
I have an iMac as a primary computer, plus a Mac Mini hooked up to my entertainment system, and my girlfriend's powerbook in the house too. There seem to be two main iTunes options: either constantly try to keep all three iTunes libraries synchronised by running around importing files, etc.; or just keep one library, and share it over the network.
Right now, I am keeping my iTunes library on my iMac and sharing it with the Mac Mini and the powerbook. If anyone wants to add music (or other content) to the library, it has to be through the iMac. Obviously the iMac has to be on for any other computer to access the shared library.
I want to try to make things simpler by having a single "network" iTunes library that all computers to be able to share (read AND write). I envisage having this "iTunes Server" on an external HD connected to my Airport Extreme as an Airport Disk. If I move the entire contents of ~/music/iTunes (including artwork, library files, etc) to this central location, will the three Macs be able to deal with this, ie can multiple computers share an iTunes library database on an airdisk? Will I be able to stream content from this library to all three computers? Will I be able to import new music into the library from any one of the three computers?

I am having a very similar problem. I have all of my music saved on a large external disk connected to my airport. I would like to be able to just play what i want from this disk, but i don't like having to download every track i want to listen to. I still want to be able to bring my laptop with me and have some music so i don't want to make this external disk my library folder. Is there a way to play it on my computer similar to a shared library on another computer? Am i asking to much out of apple?
