Monitoring and Managenent in IPVPN's

Could do with a bit of advice on monitoring and management of circuits and CPE's in L3IPVPNs
Graphing of circuits seems straight forward as I can just add PE's to Cacti and graph all customer circuits.
My thoughts when looking at Monitoring CPE is that I could use Central Services where I have a monitoring VRF with a NMS server sat on it, this monitoring vrf would import all the CPE loopbacks from all customer IPVPN's and then all customer IPVPN's would import the ip address of the NMS server, is this common?
The only issue or complexity I can see in this is the management of IP addressing as I would have to make sure all CPE's loopbacks across all IPVPN's have unique IP addresses that do not conflict with the customer IP addressing scheme and do not conflict with the monitoriong IP addressing scheme. This is because the monitoring VRF will hold the all CPE loopbacks routes and the monitoring subnet and then the customer overlap is a consideration as the CPE will be configured with that /32 and therefore it can't overlap with their IP addressing.
Any way to simplify this or work around this?
To make this easier is anyone utilising the 169.254.0.0/16 subnet for Central Services as we have a better chance of the customers not wanting to use this, can anyone see a potential issues using this?
For management I could just stick another server (maybe a terminal server or just use the NMS server) on the same monitoring subnet and again use the CPE loopbacks to ssh to them, although I worked at a previous (much larger ISP) and we had some sort of system that you could ssh to and choose what IPVPN/vrf you want to be in and then you were in that vrf - it was a long time ago that I worked there and didn't put much thought into how that worked at the time (wish I had now) but the only way I can see this working is something that could run MPBGP - all I am asking here is whether anyone has any suggestions/links/software or nice tricks of the trade etc for managemnet- I know it is a high level question and I don't expect anyone to spend a load of time walking me thorugh this.
Any input on this would help a lot, thanks in advance

if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

Under Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Boot Camp, my 27 inch Apple LED Cinema Display checks out as a Generic PnP Monitor and is shown as NOT HDCP compliant. I haven't been able to find any kind of an .inf file to use. Does anyone have a solution?

How to connect my MacBook to a monitor and TV at the same time? I have a thunderbolt, what else do I need?

I have an ASUS monitor and a SONY TV set. I have 2 HDMI cables, one for the TV and one for the monitor. I also have a Thunderbolt for my Mac and I have HDMI Pigtail Switch with 3 ports. For some reason when I connect the Pigtail Switch to the Thunderbolt and the 2 HDMIs to the Pigtail nothing happens. Anyone knows the answer?

Sounds like you're using a POP mail account.

It will depend on what model of iMac you have.
You may want to post machine info.

Most of the iMac's have sometype of video output port on the back. You will problably need a converter.
The 'hollywood' industry has been making it more difficult to get video out over time to prevent copying.

MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:

and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

I have a 13" MacBook. I also have a nice 19" Samsung flat screen monitor lying around here. Since my laptop sees most of its duty on a table during the summer (no school), I'm thinking of getting the monitor and a keyboard and hooking it up, even though it's enormous.
Now, I know all I need is a Mini-DVI to VGA connector (apple sells it for $19).
But the thing is, I'd like to also be able to connect my laptop to a TV (meaning I need the mini-DVI to Video connector, $19 again).
I could buy both, but I don't want to spend $40 on just connectors. What's my best option? Is there any other way?

Some TVs have VGA connectors on them, but I'm guessing yours does not. In that case, I think you are stuck buying two adapters.

Can I use DisplayPort (for a monitor) and Thunderbolt at the same time?

I have a mid 2011 MacBook Air 13 inch with a single Thunderbolt port.
I have the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable which I am able to use to run a Dell 24 inch monitor - this cable connects to both the DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port and also a USB port on the Air.
I want to be able to run this Dell monitor, and also run a Thunderbolt hard drive - one with 2 Thunderbolt ports.
Is this possible?
Can I connect the DisplayPort part of the cable to the pass-through Thunderbolt port on the hard drive, and then connect the hard drive to the Thunderbolt port on the Air?

Macbook Air - connect to Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt (Using Thunderbolt cable)
Seagate Goflex Thunderbolt passthrough to a Dell 24 Inch monitor (using Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable).
Both the Seagate GoFlex and the Dell 24 inch monitor work :-)
I am happy with this result, so I won't need to get a Thunderbolt moniter just yet - I will wait for Gen 2 :-)

VGA monitor and a 2010 Mac Mini - HELP PLEASE!

I just upgraded from the early 2009 model where all you needed was a VGA to mini DVI adapter. With this 2010 model, Im not sure if thats possible (for cheap anyway). I have a VGA monitor and all I want to do is hook it up to the new mac mini ...but how? I've heard that because VGA is analog and HDMI is digital that it cannot be done for under $100 ..is this so? why oh why couldnt apple have stuck with mini dvi. Please someone advise how to do this ..or am I forced to buy a new monitor with DVI/Mini DVI/HDMI connections

Forget the HDMI port. There's the Mini DisplayPort available, and all it takes is the right adapter:

You can have one HDMI (or DVI monitor via HDMI to DVI adopter) on the HDMI port
Another monitor via one Thunderbolt port and suitable adopter if not a displayport/mini displayport monitor
And use the other Thunderbolt port for Ethernet via a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adopter.

That monitor supports both (digital) DVI and (analog) VGA connections, so you should not need a converter or use a different adapter.
You should use the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter and a (digital) DVI cable to the monitor.

I'm looking to buy a monitor or two for my laptop (Retina Macbook Pro 2013 model (not the latest one)). There are a few things that I would like to understand.
- If I'm going to get the Apple Cinema Display, I know I will be using thunderbolt to connect my laptop to it. If I get a non-Apple monitor though, what will I be using? HDMI? also thunderbolt? is thunderbolt exclusive to Apple or can non-Apple monitors use thunderbolt as well.
- As far as sizing and resolution, I know that I have to pay attention to the resolution of the monitor I'm getting to make sure I'm getting the quality I'm looking for as opposed to just looking at the size of it. Ideally, I would want my monitor to look like my Retina Macbook, whats the resolution I should be looking for? Is Retina too much for a monitor? if so, whats a good resolution for a monitor that my Macbook can support fully, what size will work without reducing the quality? does dual screens (even if the second screen was the laptop screen) reduce the quality of one of the monitors?
- I don’t know if this an exclusive thing to when using an Apple monitor but, would I be able to put my laptop to sleep (actually close the lid) while it mirrors to the monitor? Is this only possible when using thunderbolt and therefore it can only happen with Apple Cinema Display? or can it happen with other cables?
- Finally what are your recommendations for monitors that are good. I'm debating between one 27/30 inch monitor and two 21/23 inch display. LCD? LED?

This is more about your modem then anything. Sometimes you'll need to unplug and plug back in your modem. Consider it a glitch from the ISP or just the modem in general.
