Monitoring and playback

I just bought this application and have no problem recording, but on playback I can't get any audio. I see the modulations in the track, the playhead is moving along nicely, but there is no sound. There is no problem with the computer's audio (iTunes plays). Is the application defective?
Thanks for any advice.

Did you choose the output in System Preferences > Sound or Garageband > Preferences> Audio Midi?

  • BUG: Software monitoring and playback levels

Have you ever thought your headphone monitoring level jumped up or down, for no apparent reason ? I think I may have found out why... try this:
    1) Turn ON Software Monitoring. Independent Monitoring Level can be on or off, it doesn't matter. Take an audio track with active regions on it, arm that track for recording, and press play. Move the record fader up and down--it will adjust the level of the playback audio. All is good. Move this fader down around -20dB, so you can hear the track, but it's quiet.
    2) Now, stop the transport, turn OFF Software Monitoring, and press play again. The track's playback level has not changed, which is fine. Move the record fader up and down--it doesn't do anything. Would be nice if that fader controlled the playback volume, but that's more of a feature request. Here comes the real bug...
    3) Take the track out of record, then put it back in record. Press play: BOOM!, your playback level on that track has now jumped to 0dB. And there's no way to change it--regardless of the level set by the record and play faders, you're now monitoring at 0dB.
    4) Turn ON Software Monitoring, and everything goes back to normal--the playback volume jumps back to the setting of the record fader. Now, turn OFF Software Monitoring, and your monitoring level will stay where you just put it UNTIL you take the track out of record. Next time you re-arm the track, it will jump back to 0dB.
    Very weird, eh ?
As best I can tell, when Software Monitoring is OFF, the only way to change your playback monitoring level (for a track armed for recording--using auto-punch, etc.) is to turn Software Monitoring ON, then back OFF again. That will set your level to whatever the fader is showing. But once you take the track out of record, the level resets back to 0dB.
Assuming this isn't some bizarre corruption of my system, maybe we could get Apple's attention to fix this ?
And I think there may also be a related bug where the live input monitoring level jumps (regardless of visible fader position) while Software Monitoring is ON, but I can't reproduce it. Just thinking I've experienced that from time to time, too, and it's such a similar problem to this one...

This happens to me on a fairly regular basis. In my case, the input volume is always LOWER than the fader position.
I will be, say, recording an electric guitar part. Software monitoring on (I monitor thru Logic). The fader is at 0dB, and the guitar on input is a bit loud in the mix, but good for overdubbing a part. After a few passes, the level on input, or even while in record, will drop a good 3 or 4 dB. Hit stop, hit play, and the playback volume is loud again. Go into record, and it drops... the fader was never touched.
This is isn't every time I record, but common enough to not surprise me... It's definitely a bug

  • Monitoring and playback through Built-in Output

I've always used Nuendo on a separate PC for all my recording, editing, mixing tasks etc. but I wanted to migrate it all to MAC and Logic Pro.
If been fiddling around for a couple of days now and I have some problems setting up. I use a MOTU 8pre as an input-device connected through firewire to my MacBook Pro. I've been able to successfully record tracks but somehow I can't listen the recordings back. Which I want to do by using my MacBook Pro's Built-in Output (speakers or headphones plugged into the thing).
In my Audio MIDI Setup my default input is the MOTU 8pre and for my default- and system Output are both selected the Built-in Output. In Logic Pro I've made sure the Software monitoring box is checked and the mixer shows activity both in the Input 1 and Output 1-2 sections, but no sound out of my laptop.
It's probably something simple (or just plain stupid hehe) but I don't know where to look anymore. Anyone?

If you are on LP8 (which I assume) you have to set up an *Aggregate Device*, as LP8 can use only one device *at a time*. You have to make one virtual device of your two real devices (MOTU and Built-in). Here is how to do that:

  • Dual Monitor and Full screen playback in Color 1.0

So, I was wondering if somebody could help me out.
I have 2 screens, one is a 23" ACD other is a 23" dell. I am going to be color correcting with my Matrox MXO setup on the 23"ACD. Whenever I do full screen playback the waveform monitor and vectroscope and all that jazz is not available anymore (obviously because of full screen)
So I was wondering what my options were:
    1. Setup the waveform and vector scope to show on my primary display? (if possible, I'm not sure how to do it)
    2. Do I have to get another graphics card and run three monitors?
    3. If I Color grade with full screen playback disabled am I still utilizing the MXO for grading?
I am new to Color and how it works so I apologize if these questions seem "newbie-ish" of me.
    Thanks

Isn't there a SINGLE MONITOR option in COLOR? Use that.
I don't think two graphics cards will work with Color, as Color relies on the card when it comes time to render. Might mess it up, or not work.

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • Editing with Mac Monitor and TV.

When I try to view a TV and monitor simultaneously for editing I do not always get a picture on the TV. Sometimes sound only. I use a Panasonic GS 400 connected between monitor and TV. In preferences I have set iMovie to playback through camera.
It appears if I am viewing clips in the Clip Viewer and stay in that mode, even when moving the curser the pictures are OK. If I now click on a clip in the Clips Pane the picture on the TV disappears.
To get it back if I click on preferences>playback icon and then come out of preferences the TV picture returns.
As a matter of interest I have tried different connecting cables and a Canon camcorder with no change.
Is their anyone that can Help Please!

    Hi
    Recognice this wagely.
Using two ways to connect to TV (one at a time)
    • Canopus ADVC 300
    • Sony TRV 900E
The Sony Camera keeps contact all the time but my Mac dislikes it when starting-up
    (has to be de-connected)
The Canopus drops contact from time to time - toggling the Analog or Digital input switch
    most often re-connects.
Not sure if there is a fix for this but You might try:
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • Preview Monitor and Exporting Quality Issues

Hello, in a previous life I was a video editor from the world of Avid and I just picked up Premiere for an emergency side mission at my current place of employment and I have run into a couple issues with CS4.
    1. The preview monitor for the Sequence displays a lower quality of the video that comes from the uploaded Clip and it also does not play back at a steady frame rate. However, when I look at the Clip in the secondary preview monitor that is reserved for clips, titles, etc, the video quality is as high as what is expected. How do get the sequence monitor to playback at the quality the clips are uploaded as and how do I get the playback to do so at a steady 30fps?
    2. My exporting experience was based around dubbing directly to Beta tapes and I never really had to do any digital file exporting. I need some tips on what to export a Sequence as that will retain a high amount of the quality while also keeping the file size to what will fit on a disk. The video length in this case would never be more than 5 minutes as I am only working on sales videos. Also, the file needs to be playable in Windows Media Player.
Thank you in advance for any help on these issues.

    Please provide
these details to help us help you.
    Cheers

  • Source monitor and programm monitor stopped displaying anything

    Hey there,
I'm a CS6 Production Premium user and in severe trouble here: I'm working on a big 1080p AVC-Intra50 project for a client that is due next monday. I'm close to completion, but a couple of days ago, the source monitor stopped displaying video. It would show a still as I loaded in a clip, but as soon as I played back, the source monitor simply went black. The clip was playing though and audio can be heard. Not that big a problem, I thought, and simply used the program monitor for playback. But yesterday, the same thing happened to the program monitor as well. But not just that: Even the stills are gone now. Both monitors remain black at all times, even though playback and sound still work. So I got curious and tried different materials and different projects: AVCHD, DNxHD, even JPEGS, nothing shows on either monitors, regardless of the resolution. Still, everything works just fine on my laptop.
So I completely uninstalled the entire Creative Suite, used the Clean Script multiple times, including reboots, deleted all remaining files from user and windows directories and updated all my hardware to the latest drivers. Nothing. Both monitors remain black and useless. I didn't change anything to my Adobe setup, nor my hardware or software configuration while this error occured. I searched the web for hours and I'm completely at my wits' end. Any suggestions?
    My system:
    Windows 7 x64
    Intel Core i7 2600k
    8 GB RAM
    ATi 6870

I did purge the entire cache and database. Didn't help.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I only purged the database. Now, that I deleted all cached media files manually, the programm monitors is working again, but the source monitor is still out.
EDIT 2: Okay, now stuff is getting really weird: So the program monitor was working again. I continued editing for a bit, then put the program monitor into full screen and it went black again. Even when I went back to the normal size, it remains black, BUT, now the source monitor was working again. So I put the source monitor intro full screen and it went black again and both monitors stayed black.
So after deleting the media cache, I had the program monitor working again. After full screen use, it went balck, but the source monitor was working. After full screen use on the source monitor, both monitors are black again. What is going on?!

AND, when I put on my glasses there are these odd "lines" across the screen,
    like shadows from window blinds.
    I'm wondering if it's a communication problem between my monitor and my computer;

Could there be any other problem?
Any help would be sooo appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hello WereBearRose,

  • How to let Final Cut "ignore" other monitor and have preview on the largest

How to let Final Cut "ignore" the other monitor" and have preview on the largest monitor?
I have a setup with a MB Pro and an external Eizo 27" calibrated screen.
Now I am using the 27" as the main screen with Final Cut with its panes and windows on it and the MBPro as preview (Command F12). I would like to see the preview on the large 27" when I hit Command F12 and not on the laptop sometimes. Any way to do this?
When I do the "mirror" screen setup the resolution drops down on the Eizo 27" so that does not seem to be a good option.
    Any solutions?

  • Color shift in external monitor during playback

    Hello,
I've been having an issue recently with HD playback to my external monitor. This is happening both in 720 and 1080 timelines. When playback is stopped, the image color looks correct both on the Mac and on the external monitor. But when I play the timeline, there is a slight color shift in the external monitor towards green. This color shift does not happen on the mac monitor during playback. This happens with rendered media, as well as media direct from the clip that does not need rendering. Exported videos do not have this issue. Any idea what may be happening?
I have a Mac Pro, 2.66 Quad with 8GB Memory. With Kona3 card connected to a Panasonic BT-LH2600W HD monitor. Kona3 is connected to monitor via HD-SDI. With Final Cut Pro 6.06 and Mac OS 10.5.8.

Type of footage you are using? What sort of hard drives it is stored on? Those would be good details to have too.

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

  • Record and Playback performance goes down at high frequency

    Hi,
    We're testing record and playback using USRP-2920( LV 2013sp1, NI-USRP 14)
To test it, we downloaded record and playback example code.
Signal source is a function generator outputting 6 MHz bandwidth 8 VSB modulation signal.
USRP Rx parameters are center = variant / gain = 0 / IQ rate = 25MHz and Tx parameters are center = same as Rx center / gain = 0 / IQ rate = 25MHz
The problem is... in low carrier frequency like 70MHz, quality of playback signal is great.
But in high carrier freqency like 2.2GHz, SNR and signal power dropped significantly i.e. they tend to drop as carrier frequency goes high.
And  the strange thing is as carrier frequency is increased, a small peak on the center is increased as well.
Please check the attatched file to see the tendancy.
So.. my question is why is this tendancy occures?(we tested another USRP and the result was same as before)
and what should we do to reduce this effect?
    Regards,
    Youngmin

record and playback results.xls ‏469 KB

    Hi,
I suggest a couple of things:
NI USRP 2920 is a non-calibrated device. So setting a gain value of 0 at different frequencies could mean a different actual gain. So try increasing the Rx recording gain (on the USRP) in cases where you observe low SNR. Similarly Tx is not calibrated.
Is the signal recording done with cables or over wireless medium ? You can try to eliminate any spurious signals if you use SMA cables while recording.
I think the power at the center of the spectrum is the DC offset. You may refer to the DC Offset/LO leakage section in the best practices section here http://www.ni.com/white-paper/13881/en/
    Thanks.
