Monitoring disk thresholds?

I am trying to monitor disk thresholds using System Center Operations Manager 2012 R2. How do you set up different thresholds? Can alerting be created off those thresholds?

To set up different thresholds, you have 2 methods to do that:
Override exist threshold on management pack.
Create custom monitor to monitor specific threshold.

  • Agentless Mode - Monitor Disk Space

Hi guys, I have 100 VMs running Windows 7. All I wish to do is monitor the free space on them so I installed the agent on a server VMand I'm trying to use it as a proxy to agentless monitor disk space on them. I can't figure out though how to get the disk
space monitor to fire against them agentless. It doesn't seem to discover the disk instances against them. Is there a guide for this somewhere?

I should have been more specific.
There are no internal firewalls software or hardware based
Remote registry is ruing on all machines.
The SCOM action account is a full admin on al client machines
The issue is that the logical disk are simply not being discovered agentlessly. How to troubleshoot this? I see messages like this on my Proxy agent:

  • Monitoring Disk I/O ?

What’s the best/easiest was to view/monitor disk I/O on a particular tablespace. We are currently using Oracle 9i running on AIX5.2

    Hi,
What’s the best/easiest was to view/monitor disk I/O on a particular tablespace. Lot's of choices. I like to segregate large tablespaces into separate data files, so that I can monitor disk I/O with iostat:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/linux/displaying_io_stats.htm
Remember, the OS has more details on I/O, and Oracle only gets I/O detsils second-hand, from the OS. . . . On my systems, I capture the data from iostat and store it in Oracle tables for time-series analysis.
Within Oracle, I like to track tablespace I/O with the dba_hist_filestatxs and stats$filestatxs tables:

AIX5.2 In AIX, I love using CIO, a very sweet tool:

  • Difference between Available and Used in Info for MacIntosh HD and Space Free and Space Utilised under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage?

I have a MacBook Air 2010, upgraded to OSX Version 10.8.4.  When I click the Macintosh HD and then look under Info, it says I have 120.47GB capacity, Available 60.97GB, Used 59.5GB.  However when I look under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage it says Space Utilised 92.18GB, Space free: 28.29GB.  Questions:
    Why the difference?
Which is more important for computer speed?
How to I reduce "Space Utlised" to closer to "Used"?  (I've already moved 25GB of the more bulky, less immediate data to external storage from the computer, including emptying IPhoto Trash and the main Trash.  The Space Utilised dropped only from 95GB to 92GB--while the Used space dropped from 85GB to 60GB.)

    Iheartapple1970
Just to let you I tried the reindexing before the Mendes advice and it had no effect.  Of course, I may have done it wrong. It was the HD icon from the desktop which I dragged into the Privacy window of Spotlight (and then did the +, OK, - and close Spotlight).  Should I have dragged in something else?  Or opened up the HD and dragged in all the contents?
Also, there is a small section in my HD which is for my wife's account which has a separate user name and password, although it has no data in it and I set it up while under my administrator account original, so my MacAir may think I still "own" it; in any case, I did not get any sort of error message saying I did not have ownership of the entire HD.

  • Windows Randomly Freezes when Resource Monitor Disk Highest Active Time Maxed Out

I'm getting this same problem as this person:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/4e33c8d9-fc3d-434b-8dd0-29965d1aa0a2
Except that it seems to happen at random.  While playing a game, browsing the net or when it's just sitting idle.
Hard drive light goes solid, the blue line (% highest active time) in the resource monitor disk graph stays peaked at 100% but
relatively little or no hard disk activity.
My mouse is also usually still responsive.
Some apps will continue to work, but if I click on them they will usually become unresponsive, same goes if I attempt to click on the Windows Start button.  If I'm playing a game, it will stutter or freeze and a .5-1 second sound clip will continuously loop
until it's done (meaning the hard drive light is no longer solid and blue line is no longer peaking).
It is also the same for me that occasionally the OS will freeze completely and I will need to hold down the power button to reboot, but this is usually more rare.
I've checked the Event Viewer and there are no errors that coincide with the problem.
I've run chkdsk and no errors were returned.  Same when I ran Memtest86+ to check RAM, no errors.
    My stats are:
    -Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1
    -Intel Core i-7 960 3.2Ghz

    Hi,
How about updating the BIOS and all devices' driver from the manufacture's site?
I suspect it is the task schedule running in the background. If you want to narrow down the issue, you may need some monitor tools and then analyze.

To analyze the process, it is better to contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone to get more efficient support.

But while assigning individual threshold values of filesystem freespace in MB for windows operating system disks C:,D:..all the values are getting changed after saving  to same value.(i.e if I update C:\ disk value and click on save rest of disks are also getting updated to this value).
The same works fine for filessytems if target system OS is unix.
I have tried the examples suggested in note:522453 but it nothing changed. Please suggest.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Performance Monitor information / thresholds

    Dear Users,
I have been in search for information about the Performance Monitor for Windows Server 2008 R2.
Unfortunately not with exactly what I wanted to, so I have some information but still not complete.
What I'm trying to find is a sort of table with information which counters are good to monitor to make sure the server has enough hardware available.
We are working in a virtual environment so that makes it easy to give more hardware, but this also means that there is a possibility we are handing out to much and that we need to take some hardware back.
But I find it hard to find the right information about the counters to use and with the thresholds.
I got already a lists with counters, explanation and the thresholds, but there are way more counters.
Is there anyone who could point me out to a website were I can read more information about this subject?
Because I really want to spend more time about what is using resources and if we are working efficiency.
Any other information regarding the Performance Monitor is as well welcome.
    Kind regards,
    Martijn

    Hiya,
I use the following table as a rule of thumb.
    Objects & Counters
    Issue thresholds
    Processor - % Processor Time
    Above
    75-85%
Disk - Avg. Disk Queue Length
Slowly rising until poor performance is experienced.
    Disk - % Idle Time
    Larger than 90%
    Disk - % Free Space
    Less than 20%
    Memory - Available Mbytes
Less than 2GB on Web server.
    Memory - Cache Faults/sec
    Larger than 1
    Memory - Pages/sec
    Larger than 10
Page File - % Used and % Used Peak
Trend analysis on occurrence. The more often, the worse.
    Network - Total Bytes/sec
Larger than 40-50% of network capacity.
    Process - Working Set
Larger than 80% of total memory

  • Monitoring counter thresholds for general health

    Hello,
I'm struggling to find up to date of "best practices" or "recommendations" on what counters to monitor for gerneal Windows Server 2012 (and older) OS health, and what should be the thresholds. Also what base services to monitor etc.
I understand that it's highly dependant on applications running on the server, but still there should be some general tips or something?
    So far I've read these:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc180215.aspx
    http://www.grumpyolddba.co.uk/monitoring/Performance%20Counter%20Guidance%20-%20Windows%20Server.htm
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc768535(v=bts.10).aspx
    http://www.eventtracker.com/wp-content/support-docs/WP-Fifty-Critical-Alerts-for-Win-Servers.pdf
If you have any other good sources with threshold examples please share.

The 'core four' - CPU, memory, disk IO, and network.  Beyond that, it really does require specifics about what you are trying to look for and the particulars of the application running.  What looks 'bad' on one system might be normal on another.
Start by taking a baseline of a well performing system.  Then note anything that varies significantly from the baseline.  Again, 'significantly' can be subjective.
The thing about performance monitoring is that it is a very iterative art, not science.  The basics are the same for any computer, but from there it varies all over.

  • Report with all monitors & their threshold for a server for SCOM 2007 R2

    Hi,
I need a report with all monitored monitors & rules with their effective threshold for SCOM 2007 R2. I tried few scripts & tools mentioned on different blogs, but not getting anything.
Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated.
    TIA

This would be a custom report, which is not available to my knowledge. You need to consider overrides, and this is the crux of the situation. What you can do is open the pack in MPViewer, and export the pack which will contain the thresholds. And you could
also create an override view, in My Workspace, based on the pack you are interested in.
Otherwise, it will be a custom TSQL query or stored procedure, that you may incorporate into your custom report.

  • Monitor disk usage using snmp on the IPS 5.1 sensor

    Hi
I was wondering if it is possile to monitor the diskspace on the partitions of the sensor by using the built in snmpd on the IPS 5.1 sensor appliance. When i try to snmpwalk the sensor i cant see the usual net-snmp stuff.
The "cisco.ciscoMgmt.ciscoCidsMIB" entries are showing up nicely but they dont give any output concerning the disk in the sensor.

I assume you're talking about scripting this? Probably the easiest thing to do would be to use Curl. I've attached an example. You'll need to change a couple values for it to work.
The output is different than what you'd get if you did a "df" using the service account. You'll have to decide which output you require.

  • SCOM only monitoring disk space of a group of servers

I have been looking for a way to setup SCOM to ONLY monitor the disk space on a specific group of servers.
We have a sandbox environment that consists of approximately 100 servers.  The only responsibility we have is to make sure these machines are patched.  Everything else related to the OS and Software is handled by the developers who own the sandbox,
so no other monitors are needed.  Microsoft patches are failing because some of the C drives do not have enough disk space.  Is there a way to discover these servers and only have the disk monitored? All other monitors in SCOM can be ignored on these
    servers.
Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.

Without knowing what else you have in your SCOM environment, it could be a lot of work to start excluding this group of servers from all the other monitoring you have.
Other options you could consider are to allow the servers to be monitored, but somehow exclude those alerts from being sent in any subscriptions, or putting the components of those servers into Maintenance Mode other than the C: drives, but both of these
options will still collect information on these 100 servers and take space in your SCOM DBs.
You can refer to this page for how to use the free space monitor and override it for a group that will target your 100 servers. http://blogs.technet.com/b/jonathanalmquist/archive/2009/04/04/logical-disk-free-space-monitor.aspx

  • Monitoring Disk utilizations,

    Hi
we have recently installed Scom 2012 in my organization and i have created manually to Disk monitoring.
i set for 3 hour duration , every 3 hours it will keep on sending a mail .
any other setting is there to stop this ,
1)like once alert triggers till problem get resolve or disk utilization come to normal , dont want to creat same alerts.
    Regards, Velu M

At first, Microsoft windows OS management pack has built-in disk utilization monitor which you can download from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/download/details.aspx?id=9296.
In SCOM, you can use either or monitor or rule to monitor the disk utilization. You can refer the following for the difference between monitor and rule.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh457603.aspx
In you case, check whether you are using rule or monitor
    1) rule: rewrite the monitoring by using SCOM monitor
    2) monitor: make sure that the monitor does not automatic close

  • Monitoring disks in Solaris

    Hi Group,
I am looking to build a white box file server with Solaris 10/11.
    MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard
    3 x LSI SAS 9211-8i SAS/SATA cards
    24 x SATA disks
    SMC10GPCIe-XFP 10GbE card
    Cheap PCI Nvidia graphics card
    Custom Case
With the 24 disks and the custom case, I want to be able to see the disk status when looking at the case.
This could be as simple as a row of 24 red LEDs which will only light when a disk has failed, to as complex as a touchscreen with status info on there, I want to figure out what the most feasible method is (cost is not really important) so I can have the correct holes cut in the case.
    Thanks for your time.
    Kind Regards
    Richard

    An update...
I think a web-based monitoring and management console (modeled on the excellent napp-it) is the way to go, then you can run it locally on Solaris or in any browser remotely (I will probably mount an Asus EEE T91MT in the front of a case I am having built)...
I have setup a bounty of $200, feel free to bolster this and this has a link to the sourceforge page:
    https://www.pubsoft.org/pubsoft.py/project?proj=Solaris.Server.ZFS.monitoring
The screen could show system info, pools and utilization (CPU / Disk / RAM / Network) info (like JPerfmeter or maybe RRDTool).
Basically when you click on a ZFS pool you get a physical disk layout on the screen with drop-downs for:
    -number of disks
    -rows
    -disks per row
-select slice number beside each disk
Disks would change colour based on their status, that kind of thing.
You touch a disk and it brings up a detail page.
Maybe web-based with an auto-refresh capability.
Basically it would be cool to be able to:
    -touch the screen
    -see there was a problem
-identify the physical position of the problem disk
    -take it offline...
The features I have thought up:
A dashboard: elements can be added, removed and arranged, this is the default page
Saving of preferences like dashboard layout, disk layout and default refresh
Disks change colour if they have an issue
    Create new pools
    Enable new services (SAMBA, NFS)
    Top process view (ps)
Server maintenance commands (shutdown, reboot, resilvering or scrubbing)
    Compatible with all modern browsers
Auto-refresh capability, possibly XX millisecond for utilization.
    Display system errors
Navigation: clicking on processor utilization should bring up graphs for each core
Open-source possibly using HTML5 dynamic RGraph
    [http://www.rgraph.net/docs/dynamic.html]
Would be cool if it worked on any OS that supports ZFS
    ZFS arcstat and dimstat statistics
Any feedback you could give would be much appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Tip on How to Monitor Disk Utility Erase Free Space

When you use the Disk Utility Erase Free Space option, it can sometimes appear to hang and the progress bar isn't always a help.
By accident, I discovered that if you run the Activity Monitor and select Disk Usage, you can in fact monitor progress. The Space Free will gradually tick down, sometimes as slowly as 100K/sec, then when it hits zero, it will quicklt tick back up. If you observe this, just let Disk Utility complete to avoid any issues; Activity Monitor makes it easier to be patiet about this.
    Hope this helps.

Great tip, thanks for the post!
